The city of Philadelphia (Turkey, not Pennsylvania) was considered the gateway to the whole central plateau of Asia Minor. Jesus used this strategic point of geography to give the church there this spiritual challenge: “I have placed before you an open door.” Doors not only symbolized protection from something but opportunity for something. Jesus wanted these believers to recognize the huge potential that lay before them and to see themselves as missionaries to aggressively spread the Good News. This optimism that Jesus had is rather surprising when you consider the makeup of this church. Most scholars believe the members of the church at Philadelphia were from the lower classes of society. Many, in fact, were quite poor. Just ordinary people in a little crossroads of a town. Which explains His words, “I know you have little strength….” Beyond economic weakness, they also faced social vulnerability. Jews who embraced Jesus as Messiah were removed from the rolls of the synagogue, and as a result lost their privileges and protection. But Jesus sees that these believers are not only suffering, they are suffering faithfully. There's a difference between suffering and suffering well.Suffering can either be a greenhouse where faith grows or a desert where faith dies. God can send a message out of a mess. And God can give a testimony out of a test. What you stand to gain as you endure suffering will far eclipse whatever you might have lost. There's an open door of opportunity to show a watching world how believers can cope as no others. And there's an open door of welcome that is literally out of this world. Text: Revelation 3:7-13 Originally recorded on June 2, 2013, at Fellowship Missionary Church, Fort Wayne, IN.We are grateful to Ada Bible Church and Pastor Jeff Manion for generously sharing their teaching resources for this series.

7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens. 8 “‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. 11 I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. 12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. 13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.' This week we explore together the letter to the Philadelphians. Mark unpacks for us how Jesus redefines Holiness with a radical invitation to the church. Here Holiness is depicted not as a standard of perfection to be attained but rather as an open door into which He gracefully invites us to walk into - the door into His presence. In the profound beauty of His agape love He invites us to sit at His feet and simply enjoy being with Him.

The Seven Churches of Revelation - Philadelphia
The Seven Churches of Revelation Part XIV - The Sixth Church of Revelation: Philadelphia - Peter and Leslie complete their discussion of the sixth Church in the Apocalypse, the Church at Philadelphia. Jesus reveals Himself as the one Who has the Key of David and opens and shuts doors according to His Will. They have been given just a little power yet they have been faithful to steward the gifts and graces the Lord entrusted to them. This week, the Doane's discuss how this church did not deny the Name of Jesus. The Name of Jesus opens up doors of power, forgiveness, encounter, and deliverance! The Church honors the Name of Jesus every January. The symbol for the name of Jesus, IHS, has been a symbol that calls each of us, for centuries, to honor the Lord's Name. Remember, Christ is His title, but Jesus is His Name!
Have you ever been in a season where everything seems to go wrong? Your family is struggling, your finances are suffering, your job is in jeopardy, and your health is going downhill. Maybe you are there right now. If so, Jesus' message in Revelation 3:7-12 will give you the hope you need. In this message, you will learn the powerful lesson that nothing can stop God's plan. No sickness, rumor, or attack of the enemy can stop God's will from being accomplished. In the season where you can't seem to catch a break, this is an important promise to remember.
Kerry takes us on a deep dive into the letter to the church in Philadelphia and explores how this applies to us today.

This small church is commended by the Lord for being faithful in words, in deeds and in faith. Because they were faithful over little, God would give them eternal blessings.
The Faithful Church. God has opened the door and waits them to follow Him through.
The Faithful Church. Jesus stands at the open door, Keys in hand, saying, "Come and Follow Me!"
When you refuse to give up, your refusal is an advertisement of the promises of God and your faithfulness attracts the attention of Jesus. #StandingIsFighting #WhenJesusSmiles #PromisesOfGod #YourFutureIsBright

Rev. Matt Miller (Revelation 3:7-13) The church in Philadelphia had an open door in front of them. Despite being a small congregation, God wanted to use them to do big things. In the same way, we are called to respond in obedience and can watch God do his work. In a time where the culture is increasingly hostile to the faith, Jesus followers are called to become leaders.
