I sat down with my daughter-in-law Alley for one of the most requested conversations on the Brave Co podcast: how to actually date well. We dig into why so few people were ever taught how to date, what it really means to be ready for a relationship, and why "dating yourself" first changes everything about how you show up for someone else. From there, Alley and I walk through defining the relationship instead of letting it drift "organically," why trust in marriage actually starts on your very first date, and how leading with intentionality removes so much of the anxiety that ruins modern dating. Then we get into the intimacy ladder, fourteen questions I've used to figure out whether someone is safe, fun, aligned in values, and ready to build a real future, including how to handle a partner's past, how to fight fair, and how to keep God (not each other) as your source of security. If you're dating, thinking about dating, or just want to understand why your relationship feels stuck at a certain level, this episode gives you a real framework instead of guesswork. Come in for five minutes, let's open God's Word together, and let's pray. Before the pace of this day begins, before decisions are made and conversations unfold, there is a quiet opportunity to place every step into God's hands. You may not know everything this day will hold, but you can know the One who will walk with you through it. If you're asking the Lord for guidance, wisdom or quiet confidence, let's seek Him together before we move any further.  Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV) “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” What a gracious invitation. God never asks us to carry tomorrow alone. He calls us to trust Him one step at a time, knowing that His wisdom reaches beyond our understanding and His love never leaves our side. As we begin this day, let's remind ourselves that fear will not win, because Christ is leading us along a path shaped by His faithfulness and grace. Father, thank You for going before us today. Thank You that every path is known to You, every prayer is heard by You and every moment is held within Your loving care. Lord Jesus, guide those who feel uncertain, strengthen those who are weary, bring healing to those who are unwell and fill every listener with courage to follow wherever You lead. Afford Anything
Six Levels of Wealth, with Nick Maggiulli [GREATEST HITS]

Afford Anything

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2026 72:19

723: This episode originally aired in July 2025. Here's the thing about personal finance advice: what works when you have $10,000 won't work when you have $1 million.  Yet most financial guidance treats everyone the same, whether you're scraping together a $1,000 emergency fund or deciding whether to upgrade to business class. Nick Maggiulli, author of "The Wealth Ladder," joins us to break down how money strategies must evolve as your net worth grows. He's mapped out 6 distinct wealth levels, each requiring different approaches to spending, saving and investing. The levels start simple.  Level 1 covers anyone with less than $10,000 in net worth — that's 20 percent of American households. Here, bad luck gets amplified. A flat tire that costs $200 could spiral into job loss and debt if you can't afford the repair. Level 2 spans $10,000 to $100,000 in net worth. Maggiulli calls this "grocery freedom" — you can splurge on the nicer eggs without checking your bank balance.  Level 3, from $100,000 to $1 million, brings "restaurant freedom."  Level 4, the $1 million to $10 million range, unlocks "travel freedom." Getting beyond Level 4 — into the $10 million-plus territory — requires business ownership or extreme patience. Maggiulli calculates that even saving $100,000 annually after hitting $1 million takes 23 years to reach $10 million, assuming 5 percent annual returns. The data shows income matters more than frugality, especially in the early levels. The median household income in Level 1 is $32,000, but in Level 4 it's $197,000, and in Level 6 it reaches $4.3 million. We discuss why homeownership dominates wealth in Levels 2 and 3, how investment assets become crucial in higher levels, and why many people in Level 4 choose "Coast FIRE" over the grinding path to Level 5. Every company promotes its best people into leadership, then sets them adrift with zero tools to actually lead. Tess Fyalka has spent 25 years cleaning up that mess. She's the founder of Angle Coaching & Communication, author of Walking the Leadership Ledge, and spent nearly a decade building leadership development infrastructure inside a mid-size commercial construction company before going independent. Two thousand ghostwritten articles and white papers later, she pulled the patterns into a book.In this conversation, Bill and Tess take on the promotion trap that quietly wrecks teams, the lie new leaders tell themselves to avoid hard conversations, and what it actually takes for a star individual contributor to become a real leader of people. Tess walks through "Betsy" — the kind of high-performer companies promote because they assume excellence is transferable, then watch flame out when the wheels come off the bus. She names the Big Lie directly: when a leader avoids a difficult conversation to "protect" their team member, they're really protecting themselves. And the cost of that avoidance compounds. They get into the inside-out nature of leadership development: you can't lead others well until you know your own values, your triggers, and what you're choosing to be in the role. Tess shares her BRRR framework for difficult conversations and why the imaginary scenarios in your head are almost never how the conversation actually plays out. Bill brings his own moments of getting it wrong, including the time he caught himself reflexively defending micromanagement. They close on the metaphor that gives the book its title: when you step into a new leadership role, you're standing on a ledge, and you don't know yet whether the drop is ten inches or ten thousand feet.In This Episode:Why the skills that earn a promotion actively work against you as a managerThe "Big Lie" ineffective leaders tell themselves to avoid hard conversations"Delengaging" — Tess's framework for delegating through genuine engagementThe Betsy problem: what happens when companies promote excellence and expect it to transferHow nearly a decade in commercial construction proved leadership development works anywhereWhy most delegation is really just dumping — and how to tell the differenceAbout the Book:Walking the Leadership Ledge: The "New" Leaders' Guide to Building Resilience and Confidence at Every Step. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

Shlomo HaMelech said that a person's legs are like guarantors, ensuring he is brought to the places Hashem wants him to be. When a person reflects on the days of his life, he begins to see countless stories of Hashem's hashgachah unfolding in his path. He can recognize how Hashem directed his steps—bringing him to certain places and keeping him away from others. He notices how precise and exacting Hashem's guidance is, how, in mere seconds, the course of events can shift from one possible outcome to a completely different one. He sees how Hashem orchestrated encounters with the people he needed to meet, and prevented encounters with those he was not meant to meet. The more one reflects, the more awe arises, and with that awe comes chizuk in emunah. Sometimes our direction changes suddenly. Sometimes we find ourselves unexpectedly in a different place. Sometimes we meet a person without understanding why, only to see the full purpose revealed years later. And sometimes, it is clear immediately that Hashem was guiding us to be in the exact place we needed at the exact time. A man shared with me this morning how he was at home when his children's bus arrived. Normally, he is never home at that time; his wife usually sends them out on their own. But on this morning, for some inexplicable reason, he felt an urge to go downstairs and watch them onto the bus. He ran down the steps, called out to them, and wished them a nice day. As the children crossed the street toward the bus, he noticed a car speeding and about to ignore the stop sign. He yelled for his children to stop. Seconds later, the car sped past—another moment could have meant tragedy. It was completely reckless to run a stop sign, and in this case Hashem had guided this man's legs to the precise spot to prevent a disaster. Hashem directs us in everything, from the greatest matters to the smallest, because for Him, everything matters. Another man told me his air conditioning unit had broken, and replacing it would cost $5,000—a steep price for someone learning in a kollel. He was given a repairman's number and called him, even knowing the unit could not be repaired. When the repairman arrived, he examined it and said it was in good condition, except for the main part. Then he realized that he had an identical unit on his truck from a previous job, and the part needed was still working. The repairman replaced the part, charging only a small labor fee. Hashem had caused this man to call the exact person who already had the exact part he needed. These are reminders that Hashem's hashgachah is everywhere. The more we look for it, the more we see it. Every step we take, every encounter we have, and every turn in our path is guided with infinite wisdom and care.

The Need for Interpretation in Presidency Studies is a timely and provocative new title for the Routledge Series on Interpretive Methods. In it, Richard Holtzman sets an agenda for interpretivist presidency research. Using Tulis's The Rhetorical Presidency as a bridge between presidency studies and interpretive political science, the book succinctly outlines how by interpreting presidential words and symbols our understanding of the presidency is enriched, and causal-inferential studies of presidential behaviour, complemented. Though the book directly addresses researchers of the American presidency, as we discuss in this episode of New Books in Interpretive Political and Social Science, it holds lessons for researchers of executive power everywhere.  Presidency studies your thing? Other episodes on the New Books Network that might interest you include Coe and Scacco on The Ubiquitous Presidency, and Hennessey and Wittes talking about their Unmaking the Presidency. Sometimes your career only makes sense when you look back. In this episode of SharpHR Second Chapter, I sit down with John Adams to talk about how every step in his career journey led him to exactly where he is today. What once felt like separate experiences now come together in a way that truly fits. We also talk about his business, The Too Tall Franchise Guy, where he helps people explore business ownership and find franchise opportunities that align with who they are and what they want next. If you've ever thought about owning your own business but didn't know where to start, this conversation will give you a better understanding of the process and what to consider. This episode is about trusting your path, seeing the value in your experiences, and being open to what your next chapter could look like.

Michael Easter returns for his third appearance, and this one feels like a relief: a simple way to get stronger, steadier, and more clear-headed without adding another complicated “wellness” project to your life. Ginny Yurich and Michael talk about the Two Percenter mindset, why walking is already powerful, and how adding a reasonable load can quietly upgrade nearly everything—muscle, bone density, core strength, endurance, mood, and even the way you move through everyday life (yes, even airports and errands). They also get practical about getting started with what you already own, why this works especially well for busy parents, and how time outside can turn down the mental noise and help you hear yourself again.
