Justin Clarke-Doane is a professor of philosophy at Columbia University, whose interests span metaethics, epistemology, and the philosophy of logic & mathematics. In this thought provoking-discussion, Justin and I go deep into topics that are typically neglected by most mathematicians and scientists, namely the philosophy of mathematics and morality. Justin has contributed to both these areas via his book Morality and Mathematics, which takes the view that the standard position of being both a mathematical realist and moral antirealist is incoherent. Perhaps the most novel aspect of Justin's work is the treatment of the philosophy of mathematics and morality side-by-side, showing how these two topics, which are usually thought of as being unrelated, in fact have strong analogies. Along the way, we discuss many other foundational topics in epistemology and ethics, with elements of set theory, metaphysics, and logic sprinkled in. Yellowstone National Park, established on March 1, 1872, holds the distinction of being the first national park in the world. Its creation marked a pivotal moment in the conservation movement, setting a precedent for the preservation of natural landscapes and wildlife for future generations. Historical Context and Founding Figures The journey towards the establishment of Yellowstone began in the early 19th century with the explorations of fur trappers and mountain men. John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, was among the first to report the geothermal wonders of the region, which were initially met with skepticism. Over the next few decades, more explorers ventured into the area, including Jim Bridger and Osborne Russell, who provided further accounts of its extraordinary features. The turning point came with the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition of 1870, led by Henry D. Washburn, Nathaniel P. Langford, and Gustavus C. Doane. Their detailed reports and captivating stories of the geothermal marvels, such as the geysers and hot springs, captured the public's imagination. Painter Thomas Moran and photographer William Henry Jackson accompanied the 1871 Hayden Geological Survey, led by Ferdinand V. Hayden, further documenting the stunning landscapes. Their artwork and photographs played a crucial role in convincing Congress of the need to protect this unique area. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law on March 1, 1872, officially designating over two million acres as a public park. This monumental decision marked the birth of the national park system, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural wonders for the enjoyment of all people. Big Conservation Wins Yellowstone has witnessed numerous conservation successes since its establishment. One of the earliest and most significant victories was the protection of its geothermal features from commercial exploitation. Early advocates like Nathaniel P. Langford and Ferdinand V. Hayden recognized the need to prevent private interests from capitalizing on the park's natural resources. Their efforts ensured that these unique features remained intact for scientific study and public enjoyment. In the early 20th century, efforts to reintroduce and protect the park's wildlife gained momentum. The reintroduction of wolves in 1995 stands out as a landmark achievement. After being extirpated from the park in the early 20th century due to hunting and poisoning, wolves were reintroduced as part of a concerted effort to restore ecological balance. The return of this apex predator has had profound positive impacts on the park's ecosystem, demonstrating the importance of top-down regulation in maintaining biodiversity. Another notable conservation success is the restoration of the Yellowstone cutthroat trout population. This native species faced severe declines due to the introduction of non-native fish and habitat degradation. Through targeted conservation efforts, including habitat restoration and the removal of invasive species, the cutthroat trout population has rebounded, benefiting not only the fish but also the entire aquatic ecosystem. Wildlife of Yellowstone Yellowstone is renowned for its rich and diverse wildlife, offering a sanctuary for numerous iconic species. The park's varied habitats, from lush valleys to rugged mountains, support a wide array of animals, making it one of the best places in North America to observe wildlife in their natural environment. Mammals One of the most famous residents of Yellowstone is the American bison. The park is home to the largest free-roaming bison herd in the United States, a symbol of the American West. These majestic animals were once on the brink of extinction, but conservation efforts within the park have helped their numbers recover significantly. Grizzly bears are another highlight of Yellowstone's wildlife. The park is one of the few places in the contiguous United States where these magnificent predators can be found. Conservation measures, including habitat protection and human-wildlife conflict management, have been crucial in maintaining a stable grizzly bear population. Yellowstone also supports populations of elk, moose, and pronghorn antelope, each thriving in different areas of the park. These herbivores play vital roles in the ecosystem, influencing vegetation patterns and providing prey for predators like wolves and mountain lions. Birds The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 300 bird species recorded within its boundaries. Bald eagles and osprey are commonly seen around Yellowstone's lakes and rivers, symbolizing the park's healthy aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, trumpeter swans, one of North America's largest waterfowl, find refuge in Yellowstone's wetlands. Reptiles and Amphibians Yellowstone's diverse habitats also support a range of reptiles and amphibians. Species such as the western terrestrial garter snake and the boreal chorus frog are integral to the park's ecological web. Conservation efforts focused on maintaining clean water sources and protecting critical habitats have been vital for these lesser-known, yet equally important, creatures. Conclusion Yellowstone National Park stands as a testament to the vision and determination of early conservationists who recognized the need to protect this extraordinary landscape. Its establishment set a global precedent for the conservation movement, demonstrating the value of preserving natural wonders for future generations. Through ongoing conservation efforts, the park continues to be a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, offering a glimpse into the natural beauty and ecological complexity of the American West. As we look to the future, the lessons learned from Yellowstone's history and successes can guide our efforts to protect and preserve the world's natural heritage.

If God doesn't exist, then how can you tell a good movie from a bad one? We ask ourselves this while attempting to review EYES FRONT, an extremely stylized feature from prolific music video director turned Christian film auteur Darren Doane. We first learned about Doane from his work on KIRK CAMERON'S SAVING CHRISTMAS, which Doane directs and co-stars in as a man who is missing the true spirit of Christmas. Doane seems to have an ability to pull more “famous” names than we're usually accustomed to seeing in faith-based features; Michael Madsen stars in EYES FRONT, playing a gritty narrator on the run from the law after he kills his wife in a rage and dumps her body in the trunk of his car. His story is intertwined with the life of another murderer who was clearly inspired by American Psycho and is portrayed by Christopher Stapleton (not to be confused with the singer of the same name.) We also see this character kill out of rage, go on some cynical rants about his ex-girlfriend and how vegetarianism is stupid, and finally lash out once more at his identical twin brother who is a devout Christian. When two murderers and two twins' lives intertwine at a final showdown in a diner, you won't believe what happens next, and the reason you won't is honestly because the story kind of degrades here and it's very hard to gauge what is going on. Despite this, we appreciate a Christian film that is genuinely different than all the others we've watched, especially one that uses swears, including the dreaded “f-word”. Our friend and Christian music expert Josh Martin (Uncomfortable Brunch) returns to the show for the 3rd time to help us give this film some necessary context, especially with regards to its jam-packed soundtrack. In the latest episode of Half-Court Press, Sam McKewon and Wilson Moore discuss what expectations are for Creighton and Nebraska basketball and keys for both teams to achieve those goals before the regular season kicks off next week. Wilson begins by breaking down the Huskers' exhibition game vs. Doane last weekend where several NU players weren't available or injured. The two give the latest updates to the bizarre assault incident with Rienk Mast, Keisei Tominaga's ankle, and more.  The guys talk about how Nebraska, and specifically players like Mast, will need to perform to make a NCAA tournament bubble run or a NIT berth. Sam then gives his take on the Jays' path trying to get back in Final Four contention and how an easier nonconference schedule may lead to higher prospects for the team heading into March.Support the show: https://www.omaha.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Imagine leaving the comforts the corporate world can provide to find and do something greater than yourself. You can find purpose and fulfillment in helping others through dedication, compassion, and having a good heart. Today's guest has done just that. He is a gentleman I have known for years from the cycling world. I always wondered, “how is he involved in all these things?!” while smiling and making great connections. Chris Doane is a Branding and Digital Marketing Director who found his sense of urgency growing as he approached age 40. He believes that we are all born blessed in some way. He feels strongly that if we're not using those blessings to make a positive impact around us, we are wasting something that is God-given. To this day, he continues to be blessed with a lot of energy to serve his purpose. Through his volunteering at many cycling-based programs, Chris teaches others that the things that seem to cause so much anxiety in life will take a back seat when one's energy goes toward service. He believes that peace and personal satisfaction with life come through embracing a purpose and being relentless about fulfilling it. He also motivates people to ‘keep showing up' and continue to pursue their interests, regardless of anyone's looking or recognizing them. Listen to Chris' story of why he's chosen to go the path he has. Heal your body and mind with RYZE mushroom coffee. Click here to get started! Visit secondwindthepodcast.com for full show notes.
