The Albina Arts center was once a significant cultural hub for Black communities in North and Northeast Portland. But the building had fallen into disrepair and various plans have been proposed to reinvent and revitalize it. Darrell Grant, a musician and professor of Jazz Studies at Portland State University, began holding cultural events at the space last year, and partnered with writer and artist Renee Mitchell to create the Soul Restoration Center this year. The Center is already providing a venue for Black artists, musicians and "a space to just come and hang out, to belong and to heal," according to Mitchell. We talk with Renee Mitchell and Darrell Grant about what the Soul Restoration Center is becoming and their hopes for its future.

Restoration is the art of taking a broken system and bringing it back to some version closer to what it once was, functioning and existing closer to its initial nature. We do this in places for the earth (but unfortunately we also destroy places just as quickly). But, it is more rare to find people who are willing to restore their soul. I believe we're all born knowing we are love. We are born with a mission and gifts, but gradually over time we forget or are told that we're not supposed to feel, do, act or be that way. So many of us turn our backs to our soul - our truest nature - our heart, in an attempt to fit into a culture that really no one fits into. We try to stay within the narrow confines, and then miss the opportunity to even dream about what a more expansive, self aligned existence might look like. Soul restoration tears away at the layers that we've built up over time that no longer serves us and asks us to listen and hear our souls calling. What is your soul craving? Can you even hear it? This episode, I am joined by Erva Baden, a contemporary shaman who weaves together various healing modalities with compassion and humor to journey with folks who are committed to their own path of deep healing and transformation.  She is one of the original co-founders of Shadow Work Seminars (TM), a Reiki master, and a long-time facilitator in the Woman Within organization. She has also studied energy work, chakra healing, and core shamanic techniques under the direction of internationally recognized teachers. With more than 25 years experience in facilitating process work around the world, Baden's Soul Restoration series draws on her more recent study of trauma recovery to assist people to reclaim their lives and to restore their souls’ radiance from the effects of the traumas of racism. She states:  As a woman of African descent, I have a growing awareness of how the 400 years of enslavement and oppression of my ancestors here in the United States of America still live in me as subtle messages influencing my thoughts and behaviors.  So…. having done lots of internal work over many, many, many, and many more continuing years it appears that I’ve been prompted to get out there and offer what I know and what I’ve experienced to a larger community of black folks. I believe we all have the innate capacity to heal – from anything. Sometimes we just need a coach, trainer, guide – someone to cheer us on, offer suggestions and walk with us along the path (it can get pretty rocky!). This is mind, body and spirit work at the deepest level. In 2004, Marq had a surfing accident and suffered a frontal lobe traumatic brain injury. For 6 years, he was lost inside of his recovery because the injured part of his brain changed him into a completely different person. Marq and Melody had 5 children. Over the years of his recovery, Melody did her best to keep the family and business together but ultimately they lost their home and business and just about everything they owned.
