In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Jack Graham. Jack is now the General Manager of the Aberdeen Ironbirds minor league baseball team. The Ironbirds are a division of Ripken Baseball. Jack and I first met back in 2015 when he was fresh out of his professional baseball career and working in sales on the amateur side of Ripken Baseball. His hard work and dedication moved him up through the ranks and he was promoted to General Manager of the Ironbirds in September of 2019. Jack and I have stayed connected through social media. I reached out to Jack when I knew that we'd be at the Ripken Experience in Aberdeen to attend the BFA Nationals. I wanted to talk to him about something that he does on LinkedIn called Grati-Tuesday. Every Tuesday, Jack creates a post where he gives a shout out of gratitude to one of his team members. I personally look forward to reading it each week. Jack and I talk about the importance of having an attitude of gratitude and what it means to him to be a part of the Ripken Baseball family. Jack is an exceptional leader who takes the responsibility of upholding the culture of Ripken Baseball very seriously.

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Maybelle Blair and Shirley Burkovich. Maybelle and Shirley were former players in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), the league in which the movie, A League of Their Own was based on. I originally met them back in 2016, when I was still with the BIG Vision Foundation. We partnered with the International Women's Baseball Center (IWBC), in which Maybelle and Shirley serve as board members, to conduct the Ruth Hartman Memorial Girl's Baseball Festival. I was able to reconnect with Maybelle and Shirley because we were fortunate to be able get to the Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, MD for the 6th Annual Baseball for All National Tournament. The tournament, which took place from July 18-22, 2021, featured 42 girl's baseball teams from all across the United States and Canada. Maybelle and Shirley love getting out to watch some baseball, but even more importantly, they love interacting and inspiring the next generation of young female ballplayers. This podcast is the first in a series of podcasts that I was able to do on location at the Baseball for All Nationals in Aberdeen. I was fortunate to interview other former AAGPBL players, current coaches and some young players who had attended the event. All of their stories are inspiring and I'm sure that you will enjoy hearing them in the coming weeks.
Cal Ripken, Jr. is baseball's all-time Iron Man. He retired from the game in 2001 after a career that spanned 21 seasons. While he's best known for his incredible streak of 2,632 consecutive games played, he also redefined the position of shortstop before being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. In his post-playing career, one of his passions has been growing Ripken Baseball, a youth baseball organization that manages a group of sports complexes in Maryland, South Carolina and Tennessee, hosting a series of Ripken Experience events. Ripken Baseball will bring its Ripken Experience tournament play to The Legends Showdown in Round Rock, Texas, in partnership with Ryan Sanders Sports & Entertainment. Charged with leading Ripken Baseball's growth is MikeKenney, a seasoned industry professional with experience with the Harlem Globetrotters and Comcast Spectator. SportsTravel Senior Editor MattTraub talked with Cal and Mike recently about expanding the Ripken brand into Texas, how Ripken Baseball has dealt with the past year-plus during the pandemic and stay true to its organizational mission, trends for youth baseball participation, Cal's thoughts on the state of Major League Baseball and much more. Hey everyone, I am here in Pigeon Forge, TN at my son's baseball tournament. We are here at the Ripken Experience which is an amazing complex with amazing fields. If you haven’t gathered this yet, the Ripken Experience is named after the Ripken family, but most notably Cal Ripken, Jr. Cal Ripken is arguably one of the greatest shortstops to ever play the game. But what he is most known for is the amount of consecutive baseball games he played in a row. He played 2,632 games in a row. Which is unprecedented. It is a record that people say will never be broken. What we can learn from that is how do you play 2,632 games in a row or how do you work 2,632 games in a row? How do you dedicate so much of your effort that nothing stops you from doing what you were meant or called to do? That is what Cal Ripken did. But here’s the thing, growing up he was known as a power pitcher - he never even played shortstop. In his first season in the minor leagues, he committed a league high of 33 errors playing shortstop. So, many questioned his ability to move from pitching to playing shortstop. So what did he do? He worked at it. He stayed extra, he showed up early. He made a commitment to himself that no one was going to outwork him. So what do we take from this? When you hear about successful business people - these are the ones that dedicate their time, their energy, their life to a goal that they have set for themselves.
