After Renee Macklin Good was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minnesota last week, protests erupted across the nation, including right here in Austin. Local protesters have flooded not only the Texas Capitol and Austin City Hall but also out in the suburbs, in Cedar Park, Round Rock, and Pflugerville. On this week's Friday News Roundup, host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by executive producer Eva Ruth Moravec and Leslie Rangel, deputy managing editor at The Barbed Wire, to break down the ongoing demonstrations and what they signal about the growing resistance to federal immigration enforcement. Later, they dig into the sad passing of the Hole in the Wall founder, new ordering rules at Alamo Drafthouse, and why a group of incarcerated women were determined to raise money for a stray cat. 1-13-26 Tonight we're talking with Ryan Carlson. Ryan is a Colorado mead maker who has been making mead for quite a while. Those of you who have listened to the early GML episodes may remember him. He has been quiet publicly for a few years, dealing with personal things, but during that quiet time, he's also been doing a lot of learning and experimentation to deepen his mead making expertise. I'll just let Ryan tell you himself: Hi, my name is Ryan. Some of you will know me from the mead world going back a long way. Some of you won't know me at all — and that's just fine. I was very active in mead for many years, right up until around 2020. Then life hit hard. Multiple things at once. Survival mode. For about five years I was mostly just circling the drain and trying to stay upright. Things are finally closer to normal now, and I guess you could say I'm back in the saddle. I've been a successful meadmaker for a long time. I'm a certified judge. I've taught hundreds of people — maybe more — how to make good mead. I love teaching, but I'm picky about it. I only teach what I've lived. I only teach what I can prove. If someone wants receipts, I can bury Mount Rushmore with them. I also teach mead in a way most people have never experienced. From here forward, I'll be approaching things a little differently. We're going to “get small.” We're going to pretend we're a single-celled yeast and jump down inside Mead City. We'll look at fermentation from the inside of the vessel outward and change our perspective completely. Mead is going to do what mead does. Yeast is going to do what yeast does. When we actually understand the science and biology, our job isn't control — it's assistance. We learn when the window opens, and when it does, we can hand the yeast exactly what they need so they can do the job they were already built to do. Most of the time, when people don't understand what's happening, they get in the way. They step on the yeast without realizing it. They try to force outcomes that biology simply doesn't allow, and they miss the chance to co-create. My goal is to help raise everyone's bar by changing perspective first, then layering in real science and real biology — not folklore, not wives' tales, and not parroted bad science. If you want to understand mead well enough that you don't have to beg for recipes anymore — recipes that often produce mediocre results at best — then this is a good place to sit down with us and learn the craft the way it's actually lived. BigTentUSA and COURIER Texas recently hosted a thoughtful conversation featuring Texas State Representative James Talarico, COURIER Texas Organizing Director Dawn Jones, and independent journalist Aaron Parnas. The panel reflected on the rapidly evolving political environment in Texas and how upcoming statewide battles could shape the years ahead. The discussion highlighted the essential role of reliable, community-rooted journalism—especially as Texans confront ongoing redistricting fights, a high-profile Senate race, and the road to the 2026 midterms. Speakers emphasized that strong local reporting helps voters cut through noise, hold leaders accountable, and stay informed in a complex media landscape.Rep. Talarico spoke openly about the values guiding his public service, noting how staying true to his beliefs helps him connect with constituents across party lines. Throughout the conversation, the panel underscored the importance of removing special-interest influence from politics and refocusing government on meeting community needs. They closed by encouraging viewers to take an active role in their neighborhoods—whether through civic engagement, supporting trusted local news sources, or helping strengthen democratic participation at the grassroots level.Sign up for Aaron's newsletter The Parnas Perspective: https://aaronparnas.substack.com/?utm_campaign=profile_chipsCheck out COURIER Texas here: https://couriertexas.com/ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:James Talarico is an eighth-generation Texan, former middle school teacher, and preacher.Born to a single mom in Round Rock, James earned degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, Harvard University, and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Before serving in the Legislature, he taught English on the Westside of San Antonio — one of Texas' poorest zip codes.Elected as state representative at the age of 29, he has led the fight against the billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians who have taken over our country. Now, he is running for U.S. Senate to take his fight against Big Money and corruption to Washington and win back power for working people in a system that's rigged for the ultra-wealthy.Dawn Jones, born and raised in Houston, Texas, is a proud two-time graduate of Texas Southern University. She has dedicated the past decade to social justice advocacy, managing student organizing programs for presidential, senate, and gubernatorial campaigns. With extensive experience in building grassroots movements, she now serves as the Texas Organizing Director for COURIER Texas, where she bridges the gap between organizing and civic media.Aaron Parnas is one of the leading Gen Z voices shaping how news is consumed today. An independent journalist, political commentator, strategist, and attorney, Aaron has quickly become a key figure in the national political conversation, offering sharp insights at the intersection of law, media, and policy. He first gained widespread attention through viral, educational content that breaks down complex political issues in a fast, accessible way—particularly resonating with younger, highly engaged audiences. His rapid-response analysis of major court decisions, legislative battles, and election narratives has made him a trusted voice for millions across platforms. This is a public episode. Get ready to laugh (and maybe squirm a little) because on this episode of The Armor Men's Health Show, Donna Lee sits down with the amazingly chill and fantastic Dr. Preston Smith – Interventional Radiologist and all-around hemorrhoid hero at Urology Specialists of Austin!Yep, we're finally talking about the thing nobody wants to talk about… the dreaded “H-word”: hemorrhoids! (Cue awkward silence at family gatherings.)If you've been suffering in silence (or not-so-silence) thinking your only options are creams, sitz baths, or that medieval-sounding surgery nobody wants, hold onto your donut pillow – there's a better way!Dr. Smith spills the beans on Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization – a fancy way of saying, “Hey little blood vessels feeding those angry bumps… you're cut off!” The hemorrhoids basically get ghosted by their own blood supply, shrink down, and wave goodbye to the pain, itching, and general backyard drama.Best parts?Done right in the officeJust a happy little nap (light sedation)You're home chillin' an hour later (just bring a friend to drive – no Uber heroics)Basically ZERO downtime – back to work, golf, spin class, whatever – usually the next day!Compare that to the old-school hemorrhoidectomy (think 4-6 weeks of regret and waddling) and it's like choosing between a spa day and a root canal. So if your tush has been staging a protest, give Dr. Smith a shout!Check out www.urologyspecialistsofaustin.com or his direct website www.summit-irad.com. Book a consult with Dr. Smith by calling (512) 828-4300. Your butt will thank you… and so will everyone who's tired of hearing you complain about it!Thanks for listening to The Armor Men's Health Show – go share this episode (and maybe spare your friends the spicy food talk). See you next week!

Hello to all you fantastic gentlemen and amazing ladies joining us for The Armor Men's Health Show! I'm your host, Donna Lee, and today I've got some great listener questions for our board-certified urologist, Dr. Lucas Jacomides. We are both with the parent practice that hosts this podcastFirst question comes from a 68-year-old man in good overall health:“Dr. Jacomides, I've never had incontinence issues my entire life, but recently I've started wetting the bed at night. During the day I have no trouble holding my urine at all. I've already tried cutting back on fluids before bed and always emptying my bladder right before sleep, but the problem keeps happening. My PSA and urinalysis both came back completely normal. Is nighttime bedwetting common in men my age, and what are my treatment options?”Second question:“I'm a veteran, and back in August my bloodwork before a scheduled cardioversion showed a PSA of 120. My VA urologist gave me some paperwork and referred me to community care through my primary-care doctor, but no one at the VA ever explained what this means or what happens next. I was pretty shocked; nobody had flagged anything like this before. What should I expect moving forward?”That's it for today's questions! Dr. Jacomides will dive in and give us the straight answers. And to all of you listening week after week, thank you so much for tuning in to The Armor Men's Health Show. We truly appreciate every one of you. An essential part of our children's education is learning proper moral behavior. And who better to deliver that ethical guidance than politicians?Huh? Bizarre, yet this is the conclusion of the GOP's theocratic Christian Nationalist faction. They are demanding that legislatures across the country must intervene in local educational policy to require that all public schools plaster every classroom with Christianity's Ten Commandments. It's in-your-face religiosity, forcing one religious dogma on students of every faith. It's also ludicrously hypocritical – after all, legislators are notorious for committing adultery, stealing from the poor, killing in the name of the state, bearing false witness against immigrants, bowing down to false gods… and otherwise mocking the Christian religion's own commandments. Who do these nationalists and their politicians think they're fooling?Certainly not America's free-thinking students. If you wonder whether young people will just go along, take heart in the uplifting thoughts of Arjun Sharda, a high-school freshman in Round Rock, Texas. In a recent op-ed piece, he went right at the humbuggery of the state's Republican leaders: “The same lawmakers who preach about freedom and limited government,” he wrote, “are now legislating what we must hang on our classroom walls... But faith loses its power when it's forced. True belief comes from conviction, not compulsion… Texas prides itself in independence, yet this law enforces conformity.”The Christian Nationalist autocrats are not only trying to turn public classrooms into their exclusive pulpits, but to establish their repressive theology as America's official religion. As Sharda warns, “Texas should stop confusing religion with righteousness – before the wall between church and state becomes just another thing we've torn down.”Do something! To work on the fight to keep church and state actually separate, check out the Freedom from Religion Foundation at ffrf.org.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. Our apologies for the technical delay as this episode should have been released Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025. Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
“Use AI to augment people, not replace them.” “Windshield time is 30% of a tech's day—let's turn it into sales prep.” “Proposals should translate specs into homeowner value—comfort, savings, and choices.” In this episode, recorded live from the NCI Summit 2025 in Round Rock, TX, Bill and Eric sit down with Winston Chi, co-founder of NOSO Labs, to explore how AI can augment (not replace) HVAC technicians. Winston shares his path from a Google-backed, AI-driven startup in food wholesale to building tools for the trades, inspired by ride-alongs and family ties to hands-on work. His core thesis: most techs aren't well trained in sales or structured communication, yet that's precisely what turns field data into homeowner decisions. The goal is to streamline processes and eliminate friction, allowing techs to communicate clearly, follow up reliably, and close deals ethically. NOSO's mobile-first app tackles three pain points: (1) windshield time becomes prep time via short audio job briefs (history, likely issues, “don't forget the maintenance plan” cues); (2) on-site conversations (or quick self-notes) are recorded and auto-structured into clear summaries and proposals—with visuals instead of math walls—plus rebate and tax credit logic that stays current as programs change; and (3) follow-ups are auto-scheduled and teed up as texts or calls so opportunities don't leak. A service manager dashboard displays follow-up activity, and there are native integrations (e.g., ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro). Winston also previews their massive manuals brain—~15 million HVAC/water-heater manuals searchable by photo/nameplate—so techs can look up specs fast. Early users span from San Diego to New Jersey; NOSO offers a short trial, then annual contracts. In these segments, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee tackle listener questions about erectile dysfunction (ED) following TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) procedures, as well as a range of effective treatment options. At NAU Urology Specialists, our team is highly experienced in therapies such as TriMix injections, vacuum erection devices, and inflatable penile prostheses. The vacuum erection device is a non-surgical option that uses gentle suction to create an erection, which is then maintained with a constriction ring. For patients who prefer a long-term surgical solution, the inflatable penile prosthesis is a discreet option. This silicone device is fully concealed within the body and includes a small pump placed in the scrotum, allowing men to achieve a firm, natural-looking erection when desired, and remain soft when not in use.Dr. Mistry explains that penile implants are often an excellent choice for men with severe or long-standing ED, including those with nerve damage from diabetes or other neurologic conditions. He also notes that untreated ED can lead to loss of penile length over time, while implants help preserve size and function—regardless of the underlying cause. If you or someone you love is struggling with ED, call us today at (512) 238-0762 to learn more about the latest treatment options available or visit our website www.armormenshealth.com.Voted top Men's Health Podcast, Sex Therapy Podcast, and Prostate Cancer Podcast by FeedSpot.Dr. Mistry is a board-certified urologist and has been treating patients in the Austin and Greater Williamson County area since he started his private practice, NAU Urology Specialists (now Urology Specialists of Austin), in 2007. In the first segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener's question about problems with his existing penile prosthesis. This listener writes, "I had a penile implant put in several years ago and it actually made my penis smaller. When I pump it up, one of the implants in my shaft I'm concerned is going to break the skin or cause pressure problems, which are huge for me because I'm a paraplegic...Can another implant be placed and increase the size of my penis, and how can I fix the problem of too much pressure?" The penile prosthesis is an inflatable silicon device implanted internally and completely concealed. The device is inflated using a pump implanted into the scrotum which, when activated, transfers fluid from a reservoir in your abdomen into the silicon cylinders in your penis to add both length and girth to your erection. The inflated implant produces a rigid and satisfying erection, yet appears natural and soft when not in use. Dr. Mistry explains that the penile prosthesis is an excellent option for addressing a variety of patient concerns from end stage ED to nerve damage from diabetes or neurologic issues. Importantly, he points out that long-term ED actually diminishes the length of the penis over time, so the penile implant can actually help those struggling to achieve erections--no matter the reason--to maintain their size. At Urology Specialists of Austin, our surgical team can expertly place this device and help address any issues that may have arisen with older implants. In answer to this listener, Dr. Mistry says that yes, pressure ulcers can become a concern if the implant shifts and that yes, this is fixable! If you or someone you love would like to learn more about the inflatable penile prosthesis or have their prosthesis checked, please give us a call today! In the second segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee discuss the benefits of a holistic approach to urology. When patients have control over their overall health and medical treatments, they have much better health outcomes. Dr. Mistry also explains the latest in robot-guided laparoscopic surgery when relating the case of a new patient with an 8-inch kidney tumor. After another urologist told her that she would need a huge incision and lose her whole kidney, she sought a second opinion from Dr. Mistry. Fortunately, he was able to offer her the very best, state-of-the-art treatment options. Not only was she able to have the tumor removed laparoscopically while keeping part of her kidney, she had very little down-time during recovery. At Urology Specialists of Austin, we are huge fans of the second opinion. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with any kind of urologic tumor, or is interested in learning more about holistic urology, please give us a call today!Voted top Men's Health Podcast, Sex Therapy Podcast, and Prostate Cancer Podcast by FeedSpot.Dr. Mistry is a board-certified urologist and has been treating patients in the Austin and Greater Williamson County area since he started his private practice, NAU Urology Specialists (now Urology Specialists of Austin), in 2007. Michelle Huneven is the author of six novels including Round Rock, Jamesland, Off Course, Blame, Search and — most recently — Bug Hollow. Bug Hollow is a story about the Samuelsons, who lose their 18-year-old son in an accident. The book ripples out from there in a kaleidoscopic way, following the parents, siblings, girlfriend and others into the distant future and around in time to see how their lives play out. It's told in chapters – or stories – from each character's perspective. And it's largely set in Altadena, where Michelle is from. It's really a love letter to that town that was so devastated by the wildfires this past January (though written well before the fires). While in the process of publishing Bug Hollow, Michelle lost two homes in the fire. She joins Marrie to talk about the book, as well as writing through tragedy and how she might process this event in her work. She also talks about the risks of being a perfectionist as a writer, and what helped her through that challenge. (She recommends this essay by Leslie Jamison). She shares how writing prompts led her to write this novel, the importance of having a trusted reader, the best training she received as a writer, and so much more. After the podcast ended, Michelle shared her 76 favorite writing prompts with us. These are prompts she used to write this novel, prompts she shares with her students, and prompts she uses in her own writing practice. We're offering those prompts (one per day) over the next 10 weeks to our subscribers on Patreon. For more information on Writers on Writing and to become a supporter, visit our Patreon page.
