Is This A Great Game, Or What?

The 30th anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr.'s 2131 record-breaking game came with a fascinating finish as the Orioles hosted the Dodgers. This among so many other takeaway and Quirkjians. We have to say goodbye to one of the game's greats, Davey Johnson. Tim Kurkjian's stories about the (should be) Hall of Fame manager will make you smile and laugh through the difficult loss for the game of baseball. Just how good has Aroldis Chapman been these last couple months? Good enough for a Cy Young, we weigh in there. Walker vs Walker created a great moment for our show. And in honor of our guest for tomorrow's show, Jim Abbott, Tim created a team consisting only of big leaguers that never played a minor league game! They discuss the challenges of maintaining high performance in sports, referencing players like Cal Ripken Jr. and Aldous Chapman, and the mental resilience required to succeed at elite levels.10:48 -Discussion on Competitiveness in SportsNick Shedd discusses the mindset of competitive athletes, using Tim Duncan as an example of someone who balances a relaxed personality off the field with intense competitiveness on it. He believes that the essence of sports is to focus on the main objective, which is to score and prevent the opponent from scoring, regardless of style. Michael Wright echoes this sentiment, admiring Duncan's ability to remain calm while being a relentless competitor.13:12 -Overview of Nick Shedd's Career and Insights on Player DevelopmentNick Shedd detailed his journey to becoming the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Boston Red Sox, highlighting his work with the U.S. Army, Olympic teams, and the Houston Astros. He explained the structure of the minor league system and the significant differences in player development, particularly between single A and double A levels, as well as the physical disparities between major league and minor league players.18:13 -Programming for Athlete DevelopmentMichael Wright asked how to effectively program for athletes at different developmental stages, particularly balancing the needs of older players and younger ones. Nick Shedd described their system, which includes 18 strength and conditioning coaches and a tiered approach to training. The foundational movement capacity tier focuses on basic movements with minimal loading for younger athletes, while subsequent tiers emphasize strength and power based on performance-related strength thresholds.21:11 -Metrics and Performance in Baseball TrainingNick Shedd outlined the collaborative efforts to enhance players' biomechanics, including their pitching and hitting techniques. He highlighted that metrics such as throwing velocity are critical for pitchers, with a significant correlation between speed and success in Major League Baseball. For position players, hitting performance is a key indicator of value, alongside the necessity of being a competent defender.25:12 -Data Tracking in Sports AnalyticsNick Shedd explained the advanced tracking technologies employed in baseball, such as TrackMan for pitch metrics and Hawkeye for in-game speeds and biomechanics. He mentioned that while MLB restricts the use of GPS wearables, minor leagues benefit from this technology. Michael Wright shared his perspective from football, emphasizing the significance of GPS data for player performance monitoring and injury prevention.29:29 -Balancing Athlete Robustness and DevelopmentNick Shedd explains that the average minor league career is short, necessitating a focus on physical development even during the season. He highlights the importance of educating players on nutrition and maintaining a consistent training regimen, often lifting twice a week to ensure continued improvement.33:47 -Strategies for Athlete Rehabilitation and Performance OptimizationNick Shedd explained the process of nursing injured athletes back to performance, focusing on the need to gradually increase their game exposure while avoiding overload. Michael Wright provided examples from cricket, illustrating the complexities of managing athletes who have missed significant playing time due to injuries. Both emphasized the importance of data-driven approaches in monitoring recovery and performance. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's easy to compare numbers on paper, but what happens when we do a deep dive into the times and worlds in which Cal Ripken Jr and Lou Gehrig lived? In this final episode of Season 3, I pull back the curtain on what training, medicine, culture, and competition looked like for each man in his day, to get a much better idea of where each man stood in the realm of baseball legacy.

Is This A Great Game, Or What?

Was this the greatest offensive performance by a player in the history of Major League Baseball? It could be! I mean, we did kind of make that argument last year but we think this one might take the cake. And it was done by a rookie? Absolutely insane. Tim Kurkjian is back from Cooperstown after a really important National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction weekend. He has stories from talks with Ken Griffey Jr, Cal Ripken Jr, Mike Schmidt, and more. It's a magical weekend and we encourage anybody and everybody to go to Cooperstown, New York, even during a non-induction weekend, to experience what it is like. Riley Greene is having a tough month but not as tough as June for this superstar. Is hitting for the cycle even really that hard to do, or more luck or impressive? The Rockies, though we don't like to pile on, are up there doing things some of the worst teams in MLB history did. And we wrap with a Team Tim honoring the greatest players at each position, all Hall of Famers of course! Thanks for listening and we appreciate you taking time to rate and subscribe/follow. n the early 1900s, there was no such thing as a consecutive games streak, because nobody followed it. Until a man named Al Munro Elias brought the statistic into the public consciousness. Even then, few players actively chose to pursue the streak. So of all the people to attempt this feat, of all the people to do what no one else had come close to doing after Lou Gehrig, why Cal Ripken Jr? In this episode, I try to get to the bottom of this question.

This is the episode we have all been waiting for. Legendary Hall of Famer, Cal Ripken Jr. returns to "Is This A Great Game, Or What?" but this time with his son, Ryan Ripken. In our Father's Day week celebration, we have brought these two together to chat with our father-son duo about the game we love and growing up around it. Ryan Ripken currently is a member of the media, with his very own show, but is a former professional baseball player and great basketball player, just like his dad. Tim, while he was a beat reporter, covered Cal Jr. in the 80's and the two have had a long standing friendship ever since then, even though we aren't allowed to actually say that when it comes to reporter-player (give me a break). Enjoy, share the show with a friend and thank you for listening/watching!
