Lead Offs For 9 Year Olds Are Insane and I Will Die on This HillIn this episode of "the world's most dangerous youth baseball podcast," host Deven Morgan takes listener questions and goes deep on the nuts and bolts of coaching young players — how to develop first-year kid pitch arms without overusing your two best strike-throwers, why ranking 7-year-olds is absurd, when leadoffs and holding runners should actually be introduced (not before 12), how to use Blast sensor metrics like bat speed and attack angle with youth hitters, and how to structure an 8–12 week competition on-ramp for a national team. The throughline: simple external cues, ball-flight-driven intentions, and equitable opportunity beat the professionalized, performance-first approach that's driving kids out of the game by ten. The episode closes with an emotional reflection on coaching Max Rojas for 11 years — from a seven-year-old to an 18-year-old signing with Tacoma CC — and an amazing Senior night experience. Your son may play 80 games in a single summer, but he can't tell you what he worked on at practice last week. Sound familiar? Today's guest is Justin Cryer, former professional player, Ole Miss Rebel, former Houston Astros area scout, and now Director of Sports Marketing at Marucci. Justin joined Matt at Marucci's newly opened Hitter's House in Scottsdale, Arizona, during Spring Training for a conversation that hits on everything from player development and scouting to travel ball and parenting. And beyond his role at Marucci, Justin brings another valuable perspective to the table: he's also a travel ball dad and coach for his 10-year-old son's team. If you care about helping your son develop the right way, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Subscribe for the insider playbook on recruiting, the draft, and building your son's baseball career the smart way. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN ✔ What MLB scouts actually evaluate in your son — and why body type and character matter, sometimes more than the box score. ✔ The development-first framework: why you should flip the priority from exposure to development and what that looks like practically week to week ✔ Why Justin fought travel baseball for his own son — and what changed his mind ✔ What happens inside an MLB draft room that would surprise you — including why some top draft prospects can go undrafted ✔ Why making your son play another sport might be the best thing you do for his baseball career this year Justin Cryer is a former Ole Miss pitcher who spent five drafts as an area scout for the Houston Astros covering Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida. He scouted Alex Bregman and put one of the highest grades in the organization on Kyle Tucker. Justin now leads Marucci's Marketing Department and gave us a tour of their Hitter's House in Scottsdale, Arizona — a baseball performance lab, bat fitting facility, and pro player training space. Justin coaches his 10-year-old son's travel team alongside former big leaguer pitcher Will Harris. In this episode of the MVA Podcast, Matt Hannaford sits down with Justin at the Hitter's House to get the dual perspective you can't find anywhere else: what the professional baseball industry is actually looking for in your son, and how a dad with that insider knowledge is navigating travel ball for his own kid. Justin explains why the speed of youth baseball is forcing parents into decisions they're not ready to make, why 50 games and 50 practices beats 100 games, and why the best thing he did for his son was make him play flag football even though his son didn't love the idea. Whether your son is 10 or 17, this conversation will reshape how you think about his development. Send us a textAt just 10 years old, Kalani already has the travel baseball rings to rival Tom Brady. He's been playing since he was six and has racked up game-winning runs, MVP titles, and even took home the “Fastest Runner” award at Ripken Myrtle Beach. That was also the site of one of his favorite memories—walking it off with the winning run and grabbing MVP in the same game.Kalani started out as a catcher but quickly realized he belonged on the mound. Pitcher is now his favorite spot, and he's got the arsenal to back it up: fastball, cutter, curveball, and a sharp slider. When asked whether he'd rather get the final out or drive in the winning run, it was an easy choice. Pitching gets him locked in.His favorite place he's played is Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Something about the mountains and sky made it feel like he was playing above the clouds. But as fun as travel tournaments are, he's quick to point out how much work it takes. Practice four days a week, then games all weekend. It's a grind, but one he clearly loves.Kalani's pregame routine is simple—just one deep breath to get focused. Since he started, he's proudest of how far his hitting has come. He's on a team made up of the best of the best in the region, and he's got big goals ahead. High school, college ball, and hopefully a shot at the MLB. If he had to choose, he'd suit up for the Braves. He wrapped the interview with advice for anyone chasing a sport or skill. “Keep going. Don't give up. Don't stop even when you feel like you can't.” He gave shoutouts to his brothers, his teams, and especially his mom for always being there, driving him wherever he needs to go.Kalani is the kind of student-athlete who makes you believe that the big dreams aren't too big after all. Stay Hootworthy, Kalani!

Send us a textBaseball's developmental landscape has undergone a massive shift in recent years. The glittering allure of travel baseball—with its showcases, fancy uniforms, and promises of exposure—has many believing it's the superior path to player development. But is it really?Drawing from 27 years of high school coaching experience and 8 seasons in travel baseball, Coach Ken Carpenter delivers a thought-provoking analysis of what's truly best for young athletes. The fundamental difference? High school coaches develop student-athletes while travel programs often treat players as clients. This critical distinction changes everything about how players learn the game, handle adversity, and grow as individuals.High school baseball offers something travel ball simply cannot: comprehensive development six days a week under coaches who see it all—the triumphs, failures, character under pressure, and classroom performance. These coaches teach players to compete rather than simply perform, to serve rather than expect privilege, and to represent something larger than themselves. Meanwhile, travel baseball's weekend tournament structure, often lacking accountability measures or developmental focus, frequently prioritizes exposure and winning over player growth.College coaches still call high school coaches first when evaluating prospects—not for skills assessment, but to understand a player's character, work ethic, and response to adversity. As former MLB manager Joe Madden noted, today's system of over-specialization is burning kids out and filling their heads with false promises. The solution isn't eliminating travel baseball, but creating better collaboration between both worlds with proper oversight, certification requirements, and a shared commitment to what matters most: developing not just better baseball players, but better human beings.Subscribe to Baseball Coaches Unplugged for weekly conversations with the game's best coaches who are preserving baseball's soul while navigating its changing landscape.
