Maybelle (May) Blair is a baseball pioneer. In the movie, "A League of Their Own," Madonna's character was named after Maybelle, Mae Morabito. However, the character Madonna played was nothing like the real May. May did not join the AAGPBL (All-America Girls Professional Baseball League) until it was firmly established. But along the way, May certainly made her mark in baseball and softball. She played highly-competitive softball on the west coast, was discovered by a scout looking for great talent for a women's professional softball team, the Chicago Cardinals who were owned by the same Charles Bidwell who owned the NFL's Chicago Cardinals, and she made such an impression on everyone, that she ultimately wound up in the AAGPBL with the Peoria Redwings. While her career on the diamond is truly something to marvel at, today at the age of 95, she's still going strong making appearances and signing autographs, and remains a proponent of omen's professional baseball. In fact, there is a women's professional baseball league set to launch in May 2026. May's off the field life is also quite remarkable. And on today's episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, Kat Williams, author of the book, "All the Way," a biography on May, joins the show to discuss the life of this baseball pioneer.

In 1943, Philip K. Wrigley (of chewing gum fame!) founded the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in order to maintain sport and public morale during World War II, at a time when many eligible young men, including professional sportsmen, were drafted to fight overseas.Whilst A League of Their Own is a mostly fictional account of the players and founders behind the AAGPBL, it still tells a story of the real-life resilience, spirit and tenacity of the young women involved, many of whom had husbands fighting in the war, coming together to provide entertainment and boost the morale of the nation through sport, despite the sexism and misogyny of the era.Penny Marshall's 1992 movie remains my favourite, and dare I say it, the greatest sports movie of all time. A story of determination, sisterly love, sacrifice and friendship within the very real backdrop of World War II, when women could finally prove they were more than just potential housewives and mothers.Geena Davis embodies the 40s starlet as the statuesque, seemingly perfect Dottie Hinson. Tom Hanks, playing against type as alcoholic ex-player-turned-manager Jimmy Dugan delivers most of the movie's iconic lines. Lori Petty as Kit Keller, just wants to step out of her older sister's perfect shadow and Madonna, in probably one of her most beloved screen roles, as "All The Way" Mae Mordabito, with a great on-screen comedic partnership with Rosie O'Donnell's brash Doris Murphy.Even though the real AAGPBL was dismantled in 1954, its legacy lives on in this movie. It encapsulates a time in recent history that not many are still alive to tell the story of. Sadly, Mary Pratt, the last remaining member of that inaugural 1943 Rockford Peaches roster, passed away just before this episode was (originally) released. She lived to 101 and spent her life championing women's sport. These women were inspirational, trail-blazing, legacy-creating and really were in a league of their own.Episode originally released 14th May 2020Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. We gear up for the impending launch of the new six-team Women's Pro Baseball League (set to debut in summer of 2026) with another look back at the original All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (1943-54) with sports history writer Jim Sargent. In "We Were the All-American Girls" (2013), Sargent culled insights from over three dozen interviews with former AAGPBL players, detailing the league's evolution from underhand pitching with a 12-inch ball in 1943 to overhand pitching and a standard baseball by 1954, its final year. Conducted between 1995 and 2012, these interviews captured memorable games, career highlights, and the deep bonds among players, opponents, and fans. Many players also reflected on how the 1992 film A League of Their Own revived the league's legacy, reigniting public interest nearly 40 years after its last game. In "The South Bend Blue Sox: A History of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Team and Its Players" (2011), Sargent describes the league through the eyes of the players and management of the South Bend Blue Sox - one of only two teams to play all 12 seasons of the league's existence, including two titles (1951 & 1952). + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW:  Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE   BUY THE BOOKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "We Were the All-American Girls: Interviews with Players of the AAGPBL" (2013): https://amzn.to/3ADXc79 "The South Bend Blue Sox: A History of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Team and Its Players" (2011): https://amzn.to/4fCBy1Q FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Blue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstill.bsky.social Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

We spotlight the new Amazon Prime Video series "A League of Their Own" - an inventively reimagined telling of the story of the World War II-era All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (and originally made famous in the 1992 Penny Marshall-directed motion picture of the same name) - with writer and executive producer Desta Tedros Reff. Decidedly more "dramedy" in tone than the comedic approach of the namesake film (or even its short-lived, lesser-remembered CBS-TV primetime sitcom spinoff the following year), the new League still builds its rich storyline around the AAGPBL's four-time champion Rockford (IL) Peaches - while notably incorporating race and gender identity themes not previously addressed (or even acknowledged) in the original. Tedros Reff takes us inside the myriad of challenges behind the making of the series, including: the persistent curveballs thrown by COVID-era production scheduling; the purposeful approach to historical accuracy (yes, various scenes were shot in Rockford); and the obvious, but important risks of reframing the lighthearted plot of a modern-day film classic into an authentic narrative befitting the true legacy of the league's pioneering women players.

Maybelle Blair became one of the sensations of the Tribeca Film Festival recently when the former All American Girls Professional Baseball League player was on a panel to discuss the upcoming A League of Their Own TV series. During which she came out publicly for the first time. At age 95. As you might have guessed, she's an amazing person and a credit to Team LGBTQ. During my interview, she spelled out exactly why her coming out seemed so spontaneous and demonstrated her passion for keeping the history of the AAGPBL alive through the upcoming International Women's Baseball Center. This is a remarkable interview and you're really going to enjoy it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Episode 126 features Maybelle Blair and Shirley Burkovich, former All American Girls Professional Baseball League players who inspired the movie, A League of Their Own and Amy Mills, known as the heiress of barbecue Maybelle Blair and Shirley Burkovich are women who loved playing baseball, were great at it, and were excited to have the opportunity to make money doing it.  If you are a fan of the movie, A League of Their Own which reintroduced America to the real-life All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) then you will enjoy listening to their wonderful stories.  Ask Maybelle how she is and she will say, "Pretty good for this old gal, and it is a good day when you wake up on this side of the grass."  Shirley played for three AAGPBL teams from 1949-1951, one of which is the famous Rockford Peaches.  Maybelle served as inspiration for the character, Mae Mordabito aka All the Way Mae played in the film by Madonna.  Ask Maybelle how much Madonna's character resembled her, and she will say not that much, but then Shirley pipes in affirming that the characterization fit Maybelle extremely well.  It is that back and forth good-natured ribbing that is so enjoyable and makes one appreciate the special bond they share.  At 95 and 89 years of age, they are not even close to letting up from achieving their dream of raising money for a women's baseball museum to be built in Rockford, Illinois.  Go to https://www.internationalwomensbaseballcenter.org/donate/ to make a donation or to learn more.  Amy Mills is known as a barbecue heiress as she is the daughter of champion pitmaster and Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee, Mike Mills, who was affectionately known as "The Legend."  Getting to everything was impossible, but we tried to at least scratch the surface with a conversation that included stories on the books she co-authored with her dad, including James Beard Foundation award-nominated and National Barbecue Association Award of Excellence winner, Peace, Love, and Barbecue and the book, Praise the Lard.  We talked about her incredible presentation at The Welcome Conference, which is labeled on YouTube as Amy Mills-Recognizing Right.  Amy explained the three principles which apply to her business, which include the two 17th Street Barbecue restaurants and Oncue Consulting:  (1) Generosity is a recipe for success.  (2) Barbecue is a culture, not a concept.  (3) Home is the most excellent place of all.  Amy did not always want to be in the family business, but she came back, is happy she did and credits a yellow post-it note for the push.  There is even a story involving George Wendt who played Norm on the TV show Cheers. We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for unique baseball-themed grilling tools and accessories, the  Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com for rubs and award-winning sauces. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. This week's guest is Anika Orrock, author and illustrator of "The Incredible Women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League." For many, the AAGPBL was brought to light by the movie "A League of Their Own," directed by Penny Marshall and starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna. "A League of Their Own" was entertaining, funny and told the story of an important moment in female sports history in this country. The movie was a box office success, becoming the highest grossing baseball movie of all-time. But that's Hollywood, the true story of the AAGPBL is equally as fascinating as the movie, and Orrock's wonderful book truly captures the spirit of the pioneering ladies who played baseball in this league. Our conversation ranges from a discussion of the hoops these ladies had to jump through in order to play the game they loved, including having to attend charm school, take beauty lessons and where skirts while playing, to a chat about the long-term impact and legacy of the AAGPFL women when it comes to advancing sports opportunities for girls and women. Those who like baseball and inspiring stories about underdogs in sports should enjoy listening to Orrock's tales of the AAGPBL.

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Dr. Toni Palermo. Toni was one of the youngest players to play in the AAGPBL.  After her playing days, she entered the convent and became Sister Toni. After Toni became a Nun, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in English, History and Math from Alverno College.  She then earned three Master Degrees and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She taught in the Physical Education Department and the School of Social Work at the University. We were connected by our mutual friend and fellow supporter of women in baseball, Sandy Kimbrell.  Sandy saw that we were in Wisconsin and reached out to me with Toni's contact information. We conducted the podcast on Toni's front porch and unfortunately, we had some cicadas in the background, so the sound quality is not the greatest, but nonetheless, Toni has a great story to tell.
