Since 2008, there has been tremendous public interest in the social and ecological ramifications of the global land rush, a rapid increase of capital investment into land, especially for the establishment of agricultural and tree plantations. In Laos, the government has granted five percent of the national territory to investors as long-term land concessions since the early 2000s. Land investments, globally and in Laos, have violently and unjustly dispossessed peasants and Indigenous peoples of their life-giving land, leading to their immiseration. Yet, targeted communities have rarely accepted the theft of their land outright, often struggling to protect their land rights with varying degrees of success. How can these divergent outcomes of land control be understood? In Socializing Land: Plantations, Dispossession, and Resistance in Laos (U Hawai'i Press, 2025), Dr. Miles Kenney-Lazar addresses these questions by investigating the development of Chinese and Vietnamese pulpwood and rubber plantations on the lands of ethnic minority Brou people in eastern Savannakhet of southern Laos. He argues that land should not be viewed as a “thing” but as a set of social relationships among different groups of people. The characteristics of these ties to land play a critical role in determining if and how its use, access, and ownership change—whether land becomes the property of plantation capitalists or remains in the possession of peasant farmers. Furthermore, the book explores the contradictory role of the state, simultaneously pursuing investment-driven economic growth built upon the coercive expropriation of land while pledging to protect a limited set of peasant land rights. Highlighting the sociality of land demonstrates that land transactions are full of friction and contestation. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Over the last week or so the debate over Canada's immigration policy has come to the forefront. In Alberta, Premier Danielle Smith has promised to put a series of restrictive new immigration policies to a provincial referendum. In Ottawa, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has brought forward a motion that would compel the federal government to review and restrict the services available to asylum seekers.Critics have said both moves scapegoat immigrants. This is all happening at a time when polling shows that popular support for immigration is on the decline.Today's guest is someone who is uniquely positioned to talk about the proposed changes in immigration policy.Jason Kenney is the former United Conservative Party Premier of Alberta.Prior to that, Kenney spent nearly two decades in federal politics, and was a cabinet minister in Stephen Harper's Conservative party. He spent years working on the immigration and multiculturalism file and was widely credited for shifting the support of new Canadians from the Liberals to the Conservatives. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

For our first full episode of Season 10, we are thrilled to welcome Bishop Kevin Kenney, auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. In early 2026, ICE ramped up enforcement operations in the Twin Cities, which led to the killing of two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti. We talk with Bishop Kenney about the on-the-ground reality and the response from the Church. He talks about the source of resiliency among the people of Minnesota and the importance of the faith community staying strong and united amidst a climate of fear.Brian and Joe share examples of how faith comes before fear and how it provides comfort and hope in the face of sadness and despair. Brian shares the story of visiting an undocumented family. Alexa, a 14-year-old girl, started quoting the Beatitudes, and Brian asked her which one spoke the most to her in this moment. She gave a tragic but heartfelt response. Joe shares the story of a detained father, Mateo, who was distraught knowing that his son was preparing for heart surgery, since he could not be by his side. Amid his feelings of helplessness, he knew there was at least one thing he could do. Listen to the episode to hear the full stories.

Nick talks to business strategist and author David Kenny, who shares insights from his recently published book, Epic Execution.  The conversation delves into the critical importance of execution over strategy in business, highlighting common mistakes entrepreneurs make during the transition from startup to scale-up, and both stresss the need for clarity and focus on the right customer, as well as the significance of understanding the reality of customer problems KEY TAKEAWAYS Many businesses struggle not because of a flawed strategy but due to poor execution. It's essential to prioritise the quality of execution to achieve desired outcomes. Founders often fail to validate their product-market fit by not thoroughly understanding the actual problems faced by their customers. Engaging deeply with customers can prevent building products that are not useful. Businesses should concentrate on a specific customer segment rather than trying to cater to multiple audiences. This clarity helps in developing a product that truly meets the needs of the target market. The RADAR model emphasises the importance of starting with reality, aligning assumptions, deriving insights, making informed decisions, executing effectively, and recalibrating based on feedback BEST MOMENTS "What founders often get confused about is really what should they build because they haven't really done enough validation or reality check." "The things that you do at the beginning, the early stages of a business can often scale as you fail." "If you can explain what it is that their cost is, everyone talks, it's easy to explain what a price is, but it's quite another thing to explain the cost." "If you're selling me a product and you don't know my reality, you're gonna miss." This episode of the Addicted Minds podcast features a critical discussion on the escalating crisis of teen addiction and mental health, highlighting the vital work of the Free Mind Campaign. Host Duane Osterlind speaks with Jasmine Kenney from the CDC's Division of Overdose Prevention and Dr. Meena Mirhom from Athletes for Hope, who detail the necessity of addressing substance misuse among young people aged 12 to 17. The guests explain that mental health struggles—fueled by social pressures, bullying, and social media—often lead teens to self-medicate with increasingly potent and accessible substances, including highly concentrated cannabis, illegal vapes, and fentanyl-laced drugs. The conversation stresses the need for non-judgmental support from trusted adults and peers to break the cycle of shame and isolation. The guests showcase the innovative approaches used by the Free Mind Campaign and Athletes for Hope to reach youth. Jasmine Kenney outlines the CDC's mobile-friendly resources for parents, like conversation cards and an interactive graphic novel for teens, designed to facilitate dialogue and education. Dr. Mirhom explains how partnering with celebrity athletes provides powerful role models who use their platforms to talk openly about mental health and healthy coping strategies, demonstrating to young people that "it's okay to not be okay" and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Ultimately, the discussion emphasizes that hope and effective mental health treatment are available to help youth navigate these challenges and build a supportive ecosystem across their communities.Key Discussion PointsThe Problem: Addiction and overdose deaths are at an epidemic level among young people.Real-World Impact: Dr. Mirhom shares firsthand accounts of seeing individuals struggling with substance use in communities near where they were holding discussions with middle schoolers, highlighting that this is not an abstract issue for teens.Accessibility: Substances, some similar in compound to heroin, are readily accessible—sometimes even at local delis—to young people, with some as young as 11 being asked to carry drugs.

I met Jillian years ago through the fitness scene after she won a FROPRO giveaway. We stayed in touch, and more recently my wife and I took her workout class. We had an incredible time sweating, laughing, and connecting with the community. I later joined her for a Wake Up the Sun workout at another gym where she trains, and after finally sitting down to talk, I was blown away by her story and the life she has lived.Jillian spent years as a lifeguard and paramedic, working Ocean Rescue on the South Florida beaches while competing in lifeguard games that draw some of the fittest people in the world. Believe it or not, many of the strongest Ocean Rescue competitors live right in Deerfield Beach. What began as a job quickly became a passion and a lifelong mission to stay healthy and help others do the same. When she eventually stepped away from the EMT and paramedic world, some people thought her career ended too soon. Jillian explained that she no longer felt she could give people the patience and presence they deserved. After years of seeing some incredibly tough situations, she wanted a new direction. That direction led her back to teaching, coaching, and helping people improve their health.Today she runs and teaches at GROyoga and also trains at THRIVE Fitness, two growing communities filled with energy and purpose. She stays committed to her own fitness and makes self care a priority so she can show up fully for her family and everyone she serves. When you spend your days pouring into others, taking care of yourself becomes even more important. If you would like to connect with her, you can find her on Instagram at @jk_flowfitness or @groyoga.
