In a province where politics increasingly feels like performance, what happens when the people who understand the stage best start talking openly about persuasion, authenticity, and fear? This week on Balance of Power, Annalise Klingbeil, Leah Ward, and Shannon Phillips unpack the politics of communication, the growing international fascination with Alberta separatism, and why the fight over Canada's future may already be underway.First: the Wab Kinew factor. Leah reports from the Canadian Labour Congress convention in Winnipeg, where both Naheed Nenshi and Wab Kinew delivered very different kinds of speeches, sparking a conversation about charisma, media training, authenticity, and whether great political communication can actually be taught. Then: Alberta as spectacle. The panel digs into recent coverage from The Guardian, Toronto Star, and other international outlets examining Alberta separatism, voter data controversies, and the rise of grievance politics. Is this necessary scrutiny, dangerous mainstreaming, or another example of Alberta being flattened into caricature for outside audiences?Plus: Jason Kenney's return to the federalist fight. After a Calgary event on Canadian unity featuring Kenney and MP Cory Hogan, the hosts debate whether conservatives who helped fuel western alienation can now successfully contain it, what responsibility they carry for this moment, and whether fear itself might be necessary to motivate Albertans to act.Media training, separatism, grievance politics, posture discourse, and the uncomfortable question of who still has the power to persuade.Welcome to Balance of Power.Have a comment or idea? We talk about drivers and motorcycle operators using care when sharing the road with large farm equipment. We also must focus attention on the farm youth that could be operating those implements. Ben Jarboe talks with Brittany Marquard, the education and programing manager at The Food and Farm Exploration Center in Plover. She says the with distracted drivers causing more accidents then ever before, it's important that young operators receive some training before operating. Marquard says even for 'farm kids', there's training necessary. Parents need to also have realistic expectations on what their kids can do. Understanding their body size and maturity are key components. Marquard says with all the increased horsepower on today's farm, even a small string on a hoodie can become a lethal entanglement that youth need to be aware of. Nice day on the way - and dry! Stu Muck says he's been seeing some seeders out, fertilizers getting spread - all thanks to drier conditions. Temperatures will cool a bit today, and there's still a chance of frost in the forecast through Thursday mid-morning. Auctioneering is a people to people service. Ashley Huhn from the Steffes Group joins Pam Jahnke to recap some comments from clients that have worked with the group. Huhn says every employee in their firm makes a human connection with the client. That's a difference maker. Paid for by Steffes Group. Weather is causing problems for more than just Wisconsin farmers. Alyssa Kenney, State Broadband and Digital Equity Director for Public Service Commission of Wisconsin says some broadband internet projects got held up too. Kenney notes that Wisconsin has about 92% of their connectivity projects complete, but areas in Door County that received a lot of late snow are delayed. Still, she believes the state is well on its way to attaining statewide connectivity by 2030. Crop progress report had a few items of note this week. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend joins Pam Jahnke to review. Lots of risk for Wisconsin farmers to monitor and manage coming up over the next 10 days according to Heinberg.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Dale and Christophe cover one of the most decisive — and most overlooked — air-sea battles of the entire Pacific War: the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, March 2–4, 1943.In three days, Allied air power destroyed an entire sixteen-ship Japanese convoy carrying nearly 7,000 troops of the 51st Infantry Division bound for Lae, New Guinea. All eight transports were sunk. Four of eight destroyers were lost. Roughly 2,900 Japanese soldiers and sailors were killed. Allied losses: thirteen airmen and a handful of aircraft. It was not luck. It was the product of broken enemy codes, a network of courageous coastwatchers operating behind enemy lines, and months of classified training in a revolutionary attack technique most of the military establishment had dismissed as reckless. In this episode:The strategic situation in early 1943 — why New Guinea and Rabaul were the twin keys to the Southwest PacificJapan's calculated decision to run the convoy despite the risks, and the reasoning behind itThe ULTRA code-breaking program and how Allied signals intelligence handed General Kenney the convoy's route, composition, and timing days before it sailedThe unsung coastwatcher network — Allied personnel living in Japanese-occupied territory, transmitting intelligence at mortal riskGeneral George C. Kenney — one of the most innovative and underappreciated air commanders America has ever producedThe development and perfection of skip-bombing, and how Kenney's crews modified the B-25 Mitchell into a ship-killing weapon the Japanese had no answer forMarch 2: the opening B-17 strikes through bad weather, and why Japanese commanders made the fateful decision to press onMarch 3 morning: the coordinated killing blow — B-17s, RAAF Beaufighters, A-20 Havocs, and B-25s in a sequenced assault that shattered the convoy in thirty minutesMarch 3 afternoon and night: the destruction continues, the PT boats enter the picture, and the moral complexity of the strafing ordersThe final accounting: losses, survivors, and Japan's institutional reckoning with what had just happenedOperation Cartwheel, the isolation of Rabaul, and why the road from New Guinea to Tokyo ran directly through the Bismarck SeaDale and Christophe also sit with the moral weight of the lifeboat strafing — a decision that exists in genuine tension with the laws of war and with the brilliance of the tactical victory surrounding it. The Hormone Genius Podcast
S6 Ep 32: Part 1 Managing Menopause Hormone Therapy: Q & A with Teresa Kenney WHNP-BC

The Hormone Genius Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2026 55:13

This episode unfolds as a candid Q and A, exploring some of the most common and often confusing questions women have about menopause, menopause hormone therapy MHT, and what it really means to age well as a woman. By the time women seek help, many feel unlike themselves. Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, anxiety, irritability, and a noticeable decline in mood. Libido often drops. Weight gain can feel sudden and unexplained. Hair may thin. Skin becomes dry, and eyes can feel gritty. Vaginal dryness can lead to discomfort and even pain with intercourse. When women seek care, they are often met with what has historically been considered standard treatment, synthetic hormones, frequently in the form of birth control pills or hormonal IUDs. In some cases, therapies used in older studies such as the Women's Health Initiative are still being prescribed, despite those studies being widely reanalyzed and often misunderstood. This is where understanding the difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormones becomes critical. Bioidentical hormones, such as estradiol and progesterone, are chemically identical to the hormones produced by the human body. Synthetic hormones are structurally different. Over time, research has increasingly suggested that these synthetic compounds may carry more risk, while bioidentical hormones appear to be significantly safer. MHT has been shown to support cardiovascular health, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, and protect cognitive function. There is growing evidence that it may even reduce overall mortality when used appropriately. This reframes the entire conversation. Instead of asking how do I get through menopause, the question becomes how do I support my health for the next 30 to 40 years. A helpful framework is to think in five year increments. Every five years, a woman can reassess. Am I still benefiting from this. Do I want to continue protecting my bones, heart, and brain. For many women, the answer is yes. Others may choose to stop later in life as priorities shift or new health concerns arise. The key is ongoing, informed decision making. Another increasingly common scenario involves women who are well into postmenopause, sometimes 10, 15, or even 20 years beyond their last period, who are just now learning about hormone therapy and wondering if it is too late. We know that starting hormone therapy within 10 years of menopause offers the most significant cardiovascular benefit. Starting later may still help with symptoms, but the protective effects are less clear. There may also be a slightly increased risk of cardiovascular events, particularly when using oral estrogen. When it comes to safety, bioidentical hormones, especially when delivered through the skin via a patch, gel, or cream, carry a very low risk of blood clots. Oral estrogen has a slightly higher risk, which is why transdermal options are often preferred, particularly for women with additional risk factors. That said, no medical treatment is entirely without risk. What matters most is understanding the data, weighing the risks and benefits, and making an informed decision that aligns with personal health goals. Menopause is not simply an end point. It is a transition into a new phase of life. With the right information, support, and care, it can be a time of strength, clarity, and renewed health rather than decline. The New Meaning of Enterprise-Ready Storage

We welcome back Chad Kenney, VP Product Management, to explore the new definition of "Enterprise-ready" in data infrastructure. We discuss how reliability and uptime are more critical than ever, with downtime costs frequently exceeding $300,000 per hour for a majority of companies according to a recent survey. Kenney notes that while hardware fails less often today, the major causes of downtime—namely security issues and human error—still persist, accounting for a large portion of outages. Our discussion pivots to how Everpure addresses this by simplifying architecture to reduce points of failure by using proprietary data devices instead of traditional SSDs. The new standard for enterprise readiness requires a system built on first principles with a software-centric view of resilience. We then explore how a key differentiator for modern enterprise-ready infrastructure is proactive support, which Everpure has always delivered through extensive telemetry and "fingerprints" that predict issues before they cause an outage. Our predictive technology is so effective that 70% to 75% of support calls are for problems that have not yet occurred. Architecturally, simplicity is critical, including the use of stateless controllers, which eliminates complex manual data management during upgrades, and limited error paths. Furthermore, our software-first mentality abstracts complexity, such as automatic management of RAID groups, to deliver autonomous systems. This frees storage administrators to become strategists and simultaneously reduces the potential for human error, enhancing overall system resiliency. We also dive into cyber resiliency, performance, and the future of data management driven by AI. Everpure builds layered cyber protection through capabilities like SafeMode, native encryption, and partner integrations. This approach prioritizes near-instantaneous recovery from local snapshots, which is faster than recovering from backups. Looking forward, Enterprise-ready means a unified platform (the Enterprise Data Cloud) where diverse workloads, including AI inference processing, can run simultaneously with consistency, enabling "data as a supply chain". This vision is achieved through the API-first and Fusion-enabled platform, ensuring that new feature functionality is immediately available for automation, all while maintaining the simplicity and continuous innovation provided by Evergreen. Since 2008, there has been tremendous public interest in the social and ecological ramifications of the global land rush, a rapid increase of capital investment into land, especially for the establishment of agricultural and tree plantations. In Laos, the government has granted five percent of the national territory to investors as long-term land concessions since the early 2000s. Land investments, globally and in Laos, have violently and unjustly dispossessed peasants and Indigenous peoples of their life-giving land, leading to their immiseration. Yet, targeted communities have rarely accepted the theft of their land outright, often struggling to protect their land rights with varying degrees of success. How can these divergent outcomes of land control be understood? In Socializing Land: Plantations, Dispossession, and Resistance in Laos (U Hawai'i Press, 2025), Dr. Miles Kenney-Lazar addresses these questions by investigating the development of Chinese and Vietnamese pulpwood and rubber plantations on the lands of ethnic minority Brou people in eastern Savannakhet of southern Laos. He argues that land should not be viewed as a “thing” but as a set of social relationships among different groups of people. The characteristics of these ties to land play a critical role in determining if and how its use, access, and ownership change—whether land becomes the property of plantation capitalists or remains in the possession of peasant farmers. Furthermore, the book explores the contradictory role of the state, simultaneously pursuing investment-driven economic growth built upon the coercive expropriation of land while pledging to protect a limited set of peasant land rights. Highlighting the sociality of land demonstrates that land transactions are full of friction and contestation. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Over the last week or so the debate over Canada's immigration policy has come to the forefront. In Alberta, Premier Danielle Smith has promised to put a series of restrictive new immigration policies to a provincial referendum. In Ottawa, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has brought forward a motion that would compel the federal government to review and restrict the services available to asylum seekers.Critics have said both moves scapegoat immigrants. This is all happening at a time when polling shows that popular support for immigration is on the decline.Today's guest is someone who is uniquely positioned to talk about the proposed changes in immigration policy.Jason Kenney is the former United Conservative Party Premier of Alberta.Prior to that, Kenney spent nearly two decades in federal politics, and was a cabinet minister in Stephen Harper's Conservative party. He spent years working on the immigration and multiculturalism file and was widely credited for shifting the support of new Canadians from the Liberals to the Conservatives. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts
