Doy inicio a una nueva temporada de este podcast de lecturas en voz alta, Lecturas de tabaquería. Por el placer de leer en voz alta. Aunque podríamos decir que hubo un inicio en agosto cuando publiqué el primer capítulo de La tejedora de coronas como celebración del undécimo cumpleaños de este proyecto.No sé cuál número de temporada sea, han sido variables y de permanencia intermitente. Eso no importa en realidad.La primera lectura de esta temporada es de un cuento que recordé cuando en el comienzo de la pandemia que aún nos agobia. En esos tiempos se hablaba de que se debía escoger a quién darle la cama de Cuidado Intensivo que estuviera disponible cuando había más enfermos que las necesitaban que disponibilidad de esas camas. Y se decía que se dejaba morir a ancianos por darle prioridad a gente más joven.El próximo episodio también viene pensado desde el inicio de la pandemia pero creo que es menos dramático. Es sobre un comportamiento en cierta forma contagioso. Es una nueva grabación de un cuento ya incluido en los primeros tiempos de este blog/podcast var playerInstance = jwplayer("myElement"); playerInstance.setup({ file: "https://f002.backblazeb2.com/file/lecdet/lec_201-300/202+El+Examen+-+Robert+Matheson.mp3", width: 400, height: 24 });

I Am Legend, published in 1964 by Robert Matheson, is a book that has been adapted into a movie three different times. We dissect each adaption into the bits of the good, the bad, and the imperfect of retelling an awesome tale cinematically. Breanna @bloodyhorrorbri joins Jerry, Chris, and Josh for this episode record in July 2014. I Am Legend by Richard Matheson I Am Legend was a great exploration into the mind of a man trapped within the solidarity of time. After an event transforms the world population into vampiric beings, Robert Neville is seemingly the last man on earth. His only company comes from the haunted calls of an annoying neighbor and flirtatious taunts by naked woman whose sole purpose is to remind Robert that he is indeed still human.   Movie Adaptations I Am Legend starring Will Smith is the best depiction of the solitude Robert Neville experience being the only person living in New York City. Omega Man explores the cult fascination of a subplot briefly mentioned in novel, I Am Legend. This subplot served as a great twist into who becomes the monster when the term monster becomes debatable. The Last Man on Earth was the best all around adaptation of the book. Not many creative licenses were taken as the screenplay was written by Matheson himself. Vincent Price was excellent as Robert Neville and his hatred for his neighbor Cormack rang true through his great ability to express how much he detested that pesky vampire. Tangents   Night of the Living Dead - Romero has accredited to "The Last Man on Earth" to being an inspiration to "Night of the Living". The Black Guy Lives - Romero was never one to kill off the black man first in his zombie movies. I all other instances, brotha, you better run! Zombies Evolve - Should something considered "dead" be capable of learning how to shoot a gun?

I'm a sucker for acoustic (double) bass. I'll admit it. Something about the low tones, deep resonance and the physicality required to play it keeps me entranced. It also helps that I can't play the sucker (a lack of frets sends me running!), so it remains mystical to me. But mix the double bass with looping, audio processing and tons of sensing - and you've got my undivided attention. Robert Matheson (www.robertmatheson.net) does just that. He shared his latest recording, Day's End, with me, and I was completely down for a chat. But the more I found out about his playing rig and techniques, the more I needed to know. It was a fascinating chat, and opened my eyes about the kinds of sensing that works with an instrument as massive as the bass. Enjoy, and if you get a chance check out Day's End on Bandcamp!

This week on Contrabass Conversations we bring you an interview with string teacher and double bassist Peter Tambroni. Peter has written a book titled An Introduction to Double Bass Playing, and he has many valuable ideas regarding double bass pedagogy. Arizona bassist Robert Matheson is also featured on this episode. Enjoy! About Peter Peter began playing the double bass at the age of 16 (after playing the clarinet since elementary school) when the director of his high school jazz ensemble asked if anyone would be interested in playing bass. After playing electric bass it was suggested that he learn the string bass and soon after he began orchestral studies. Within a year, he knew he wanted to go into the field of music, and becoming a music teacher was the perfect choice for him. He received his Bachelor's of Music in Music Education from the Crane School of Music in 1996. After that he taught strings in the public schools for grades 4 - 12 in Northern New York and was adjunct faculty for 'cello and double bass at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. In 2000 he graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign with a Master's in Double Bass Performance, studying with Michael Cameron. He is currently a string teacher in suburban Chicago where he teaches string lessons in grades 3 - 8 and conducts the middle school concert and chamber orchestras. He also leads an Irish ensemble and a bass quartet. He performs around the greater Chicago area with many orchestra and rock bands around the city. In 2000, he appeared on the Bozo Super Sunday Show to give a presentation and performance on the double bass. In the spring of 2003 he was the guest soloist for District 212 (playing the Vanhal concerto) and in spring of 2004 he performed at Symphony Center's Orchestra Hall with the Polish American Symphony Orchestra of Chicago. He has attended classes with Michael Hovnanian of the Chicago Symphony, John Chiego, Hal Robinson of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Scott Haigh of the Cleveland Symphony, Stewart Arfman, and Erik Harris.  Peter has been published several in American String Teacher as well as websites around the world.
