In This Episode 1. Liam Neeson did that to himself. 2. 15:17 To Paris and the Hollywood movie meant for Lifetime. 3. Patriots Day and true event films. How long to wait before we capitalize on a tragedy. 4. When art transcends admiration. 5. Eurotrip: The Movie we don't have now. Liam Nesson takes the low road, on purpose. C'mon, bruh, you volunteered this information which allowed the media to run away with it. However, should we care? Will we somehow erase the memory of watching this man portray roles in Schindler's List, Star Wars: Episode One, or all the Taken movies? What he said was stupid and insensitive. Who he is, is flawed like you and me. 15:17 to Paris is not a Clint Eastwood, like, Movie - On The Thread 15:17 should begin after the train attack. Clint Eastwood offended people with some of his views on Hilary Clinton during and after the election. He is a person who is a famous actor and director. Who cares what he thinks. His art is what we relate to the man, not the other way around. Of his 39 credits as director, 15:17 is far from any exemplary in comparison to his previous productions. 15:17 played too much like a Lifetime movie, which made it almost unbearable to watch. Recognizable movie and television actors also made it difficult to believe a story that is a true story. This movie portrays true events with those involved at the time it occurred. Less recognizable actors would make this film more convincing. Eastwood tried to tell the tale of these four heroes as truthful as he possibly could but ended up hurting Hollywood appeal by coming at this project wearing kids gloves. Spending twenty minutes with these fellows on vacation while sightseeing was boring. All the drama occurred at the end of this film, whereas, it ignored the issue of every life that is not so spectacular: the single mother raising her child, the effect of a young boy losing his best friend, and a man’s struggle to find a place in a world where he needed fit in. Patriots Day and applying Hollywood ascetic to real life events. The real heroes of this very real event are the first responders. Stories of their bravery in a time of crisis are good stories to be told on Good Morning America or with news outlets, however, to capture the Hollywood flair, movie depiction of horrible events have to include some sort of stretch to the imagination. Stories change with each retelling. The shootout at the end of Patriots Day between the two terrorists and law enforcement, although not accurately depicted, added a Hollywood pizazz to events that in realtime occurred quickly and without dramatic pause. 15:17 To Paris reminded me of that EuroTrip Movie in a way but less boring. If you really want a Eurotrip movie, then stay away from Hostile aka torture porn movies of the early 2000s. Watch this silly film about a high school graduate in search of his pen pal and love of his life. 1. Michelle Trachtenberg of Buffy fame. 2. Matt Damon 3. Stupid comedy movies and the event film. 4. Teen angst movies: there are none. Only things kids are into these days is Juuls and Fortnite. 5. It’s just a different world. When Art Transcends Admiration - Scoop Du Jour I was upset by past rhetoric expressed by Clint Eastwood years ago and lost admiration for a man I thought was a great visionary and storyteller. However, one doesn't associate with the other. His thoughts on Hilary Clinton doesn't reflect on his filmmaker vision. Reality stars, actors, and sports heroes are not who we imagine them to be in most instances; they are people. What we admire is their art, the characters, and on-screen personas. Nowadays with social media, we know more about them as individuals and it's not flattering. Recently, Warner Bros. released The Meg as proof that sharks are not bankable unless you make them silly. As frightening a creature as sharks seem, they are never good subjects for a movie. There are very few plots involving sharks in which to script an original film. Depending on the idea, a thrilling shark movie should never be over-conceptualized. Just keep it simple: sharks plus ocean equals scary. Sharks strike fear in the minds of most people who ever watched Jaws. As frightening a creature they are; however, sharks are never good subjects for a movie. There are very few plots involving sharks in which to script an original film. Jaws is the best shark film made, and that was just about 40 years ago. Tell the same story over with The Shallows and add in a human element, Open Water, then you might just come close to some decent, but nothing is or will ever be as good as Jaws. In this episode: The Shallows and Open Water are two good films that embody the simplicity of a good shark film. Crazy shark movies that have to make the animal more terrifying than they are is not embracing the horror most of us feel when we consider swimming in an ocean. Shark movies should rely on the fear already embedded within our psyche. Prey on the audience by feeding upon the fear most of us have of being in the ocean. As we near this pinnacle of 100 episodes I revisit episode three of this podcast when we discussed the probability of the SyFy network, and how movies, like, Sharknado would not keep it afloat. Looking back on this movie in relation to the title of the film, there should be a more artist approach to this biopic for the band Queen and not the man Freddy Mercury. At face value, Bohemian Rhapsody is a paint-by-the-numbers biopic without the celebratory weight of a meaningful story. They dangle Freddy Mercury on screen just long enough for us to pat at the plight of this man who (may have) suffered secretly with his sexuality but extroverted himself through music, another gift born unto him. To know what empowered Mercury to sing is to know the truth behind the lyrics of songs endeared by millions. Same goes with the talents of his bandmates and what inspired them to form a band named Smile. Whether it be audiences short attention spans or the parameters of constraining a film to under one-hundred and sixty minutes, Queen’s biopic lacks the importance of truth beyond the entertainment. Headlines: Freddie Mercury was Queen. Sorry, you have to hear that. Bohemian Rhapsody was initially a Freddy Mercury biopic with Sacha Baron Cohen casts as the lead singer. Halloween has a newfound popularity rooted in a remake that is a sequel (a remakequel) to the beginnings of a franchise relaunch. Not new material, but there’s a case for simplicity with horror movies that over time lost to the evolving use of special effects and jump scares. Halloween (2018) wasn’t a great movie; however, it is what this genre needs as a reflection back to when simple storying telling thrilled the masses. Remakes and Franchises make movie watching boring these days. Same ol’ this and with a sprinkle of that thing already imagined. Jurassic World and Ocean’s 8 are two examples of films —this summer— whose failure to deviate from the plot and character development of it’s precursors to produced a final product that hit all the marks of fanfare but lacked originality. What's In This Episode Weighing down Jurassic World: Kingdom is a story that went way off the grid of believability, but conforms to the beloved moments of the first film, Jurassic Park. Sicario, is new to the franchise market, but can it survive as a profitable film series to a story that needed no sequel? With a cast of eight actresses and the potential to breath new life into this forgotten franchise, Ocean’s 8 failed to create a better version of the original film by sticking to the Soderbergh heist movie formula. Black Panther is the only black James Bond we need. He has the tech, a suave demeanor, and the well intent to undermine criminal minds who threaten his nations. It would be great to have a black James Bond character on the big screen but as long as he or she is not James Bond and more Bond-like. I’m bored of remakes and studio attempts to reinsert old titles into the modern day film industry by way of cultural appropriation: Female Ghostbusters, a black James Bond. Good ideas. Lazy imagination. The sole popularity of the title and name of a product (the film) remains the only selling point for the repurposing a franchise with different faces of gender or race. I hate the idea of that guy from Get Out as black bond; it’s only an accurate casting because he's British. Solo is an entertaining movie and could possibly be more to audiences if we could accept him --the individual, Solo-- as the main character rather than a sidekick who just so happens to be the baby daddy to certain Skywalker progeny. This movie isn't necessary to the canon, however, has the potential to payout and entertaining storyline if we care to wait for forthcoming sequels. People “riding’ Solo for the all wrong reasons. Solo is not a bad film, only unnecessary to the storyline we already know exists of the infamous Hans Solo of the first trilogy. Han has redeemable qualities and that just does not work for a scoundrel. This is a lawless land. Let us witness its lawlessness. Go raw. Go dark. Surprise the audience with a captivating story of a criminal who is a criminal. Rogue One is a far better film than Solo. The mission was to take down the Destroyer by any means necessary. The stakes were such that no one would survive. There was an ending to that tale, whereas, with Solo there is more to beget. The story continues without fulfilling a need to expose Solo for who he and not what he became after his adventures with the Skywalkers. Solo as a summer tentpole movie: meant to entertain. There just isn’t much importance to this film in relation to the current Star Wars Saga, however, if my theory suggests then maybe this explains the origins of a newly birthed Star Wars legend. Is there still such a thing as a summer tentpole with one studio dominating the market. Disney has a gambit of films debuting this summer. Every other studio fails in its comparison. Investing in preexisting titles and not taking a chance on original not-so-sure-shots drys the well dampened by only one studio entity, Disney. Early May and April are too early for summer releases. Summer movies start early, in April. June is the true beginnings of the Summer film season. Actually, it’s always been Memorial Day. Here are my expectations and movies I look forward to watching this summer. Scoop du Jour: The Preordain Clapback. Why you should always have a plan of retaliation in social media beef. In two movies, Disney and Marvel, (kinda) redefined or rather reintroduced the sympathetic villain into the mainstream zeitgeist: Kilmonger and Thanos. We may not like the pain Thanos inflicts on Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Avengers Infinity War but you gotta like the guy; he has conviction and purpose. Sure he's crazier than a raccoon climbing a skyscraper, vicious, and a bit of a psychopath. However, he's also compassionate and empathetic. Violence is just the result of the many obstacles impeding the progress of best-laid plans. Not to applaud his efforts and eventual success but there is reasoning to his logic and it's rooted in the history of our world and The Good Book. What's on the Menu: How Disney solved the villain problem with Thanos? Thanos sympathizes with the plight universe, but are his motives are not without some truth filled obscurities? Blade Runner continues the conversation it began thirty-five years ago with an even deeper questioning into the morality of creating life. Life finds a way. Since Jeff Goldblum stuttered those words in the first Jurassic Park, the question of life coming into being outside the control of its creator is not just a popular quote but a think well consideration. Let's stir up some ancient Egyptian dust with The Mummy circa 2017 starring Tom “The Maverick” Cruise aka the last of the action hero and answer the question this failure should not be the end all for Universal Dark Universe. The 80’s welcomed in a different type of horror movie which steered away from the fear of the atomic 50’s and the boujee-ness of the 1960’s Euporean bloodsuckers. Horror did not necessarily include monsters but monstrous figures committing monstrous acts. In the late 70’s and 80’s, the movie monster replaced cheesy storylines with utter suspense and terror, like, Jaws (1975) and Alien (1979). Long were the days of monsters coming from far outer space to terrorize earth. Now the monsters were next door in your own neighborhood and not so easy to dispose of. As a kid, I watched (whenever permissible) creature features on television and sometimes those “creature features” were more Sci-Fi than epic monsters. The King Kong movies, Godzilla, gigantic mutant insect films, and aliens were a common staple of this genre but then there was Dracula and Werewolves sprinkled into the play mix. These were all considered horror movies at the time before they were all lumped into the distinctive category of The Creature Feature. [33:3o] - Hunting is taking a knife into the woods and seeing what happens. [35:52] - In the movies, Kong and Godzilla are nature's way of balancing things. What's keeping us in check? FOR STARTERS Ann Hathaway plays party girl Gloria who has to move back to her hometown when her fed-up boyfriend kicks her out of his apartment. Things quickly get weird when she discovers that she — by matters of pure obscure coincidence— controls a monster that terrorizes South Korea every evening after one of Gloria’s binge drinking fits. read review SCOOP DU JOUR : The Natural Balance and Godzilla The natural balance of nature was disrupted by the presence of an ancient creature. This event awakens Godzilla who must restore the balance set awry by the presence of this other beast. That’s why Kong was based in the seventies and not today. It wasn’t that Godzilla wanted to save mankind, he just wanted to eradicate that thing which should not exist within nature without a counterbalance. With Warner Bros. and it’s Monsterverse now established, it will be interesting to see if the next set of movies within this franchise focuses less on the humanization of the monsters and more on their need to exist because nature requires them to live. Example Two: Nice Guys One is a small-time private detective and the other a muscle for hire who must work together to solve a murder. Example Two: 48 Hours. One is a crook and the other is a cop working to capture a prison escapee. Example Three: Hitman’s Bodyguard One is a disgraced bodyguard and the other a hitman who is the key witness in the trial of a Russian leader suspected of the genocide. Not-so-Bosom Buddies and Hitman's Bodyguard Hitman’s Bodyguard was more a spoof of a 48hrs and Nice Guys or the wunza movie. Although, nice guys and 48 hrs contained many humorous moments worth the laughter, the story maintains rooted in the human element and the evolution of the relationship between the two different people forced into this unfortunate situation. The Human Element The human element is where Hitman’s Bodyguard misses out on an opportunity to become one of those wunza movies we take seriously. Samuel L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds make an awesome duo, however, their roles should be reversed; Sam should be the bodyguard, an older experienced man of duty, with Reynolds as the young cocky hitman. Jackson's portrayal of a hip energetic fast-talking assassin played perfectly in line with his coolness, however, it didn’t bode well for the fatherly relationship he later established with his younger bodyguard. Jack Cates and Reggie Hammond Consider the relationship between Jack Cates and Reggie Hammond; these two detest one another as did Bryce (Reynolds) and Kincaid (Jackson) the two characters in Hitman’s Bodyguard, but which pair was more believable? Cates and Hammond’s relationship developed after a series of detours, rundowns, and attempts at Hammonds' escaping custody. Cates continually taunts Hammond throughout the movie, never really showing any remorse or concern for his well-being — 48hrs ends with Cates punching Hammonds in the face. The two were jokey but not in that slapstick sort of way; their comedy materializes from the many potholes they experience in search of Ganz, Hammond’s former partner in crime. Byrce and Kincaid Bryce and Kincaid weren’t able to necessarily share in one another’s misery necessary to develop a true pseudo-relationship. Maybe it was because they had killers on their backsides attempted to thwart their attempt to get Kincaid to the courthouse in time before the dismissal of the case a corrupt government official, or maybe it was all this back and forth with the government and Interpol that disrupted the continuity of the wunza story. Whatever the case, Kincaid, and Bryce were very likable but not well established as two individuals we should care about; they were more comedians than a hitman and bodyguard. Selma Hayek Should Guard Her Hitman’s Body The best comedic moment came with Hayek’s foul-mouthed tirades. As Sonai Kincaid, Selma Hayek plays wife to the Hitman who's doing time by association for her husband’s misdeeds. When we first meet her, she lays on the thick Spanish accent with such profanity-laced fluidity to a couple of FBI agent that just warms the vulgarity in all of us. The previous movie I saw her in was How To Be A Latin Lover, and although she’s a good English speaker, she’s even better when they let her Spanish fly. Logan Lucky and This Side of The Come Up Heist movies are dependent on the stakes involved and for Jimmy Logan, the stakes are rather modest: he just wants to catch a break and the Indy 500 is right for the pawn. read the review SCOOP DU JOUR: What to do when a show you enjoy ends or is canceled Petition. In September of 2016, we recorded an episode that never made it to post-production. Sometime during this awesome recording of Freddy galore, the recording stopped and we lost the better part of our program. Although we could never recreate that moment, I pieced together an episode filled with a semblance to our true intentions on that faithful afternoon. Comment on this episode, ask a question or share what entertains you by visiting our website. FOR STARTERS Here is a twenty-minute discussion between myself, The Rupel, and Adam about the film Freddy Got Fingered. We recorded this section in September of 2015, but due to circumstances unknown,*ahem Freddy*, the last forty minutes are missing. I’m using this snippet as the introduction to the main topic of this particular episode because as promised, I vowed to not let this awesome scenario go without some discussion of its ridiculous merit. What is it about fear that intrigues us? Is it the mystery of the unknown or the thrill of the experience that we find so alluring? Some people are born fearful while in others fear comes with living our everyday lives and encountering things that make us feel uneasy or apprehensive. Either manifested from our now psychosis or an event, fear is natural and actually healthy. But how we deal with fear is what defines how we as individuals bloom from its seed. I wrote a story called King Up High about a man who must make it from opposite ends of the city to a high-rise building during the most dangerous day of the year: Purge Night. This short story became an audio drama that is now a podcast episode, Birdsong. I hope you enjoy this special presentation and don't be shy to tell me what you think. Special thanks goes out to Alysa, Mikey, and Chris "The Rupel" for helping voice characters in this story. Birdsong is long overdue but worth the experience of creating. Purge Fiction? Although it’s not a great franchise, the concept at the impetus of The Purge films is a terrific plot device that could explore the deepest, darkest, recesses of the human psychosis without having to wow audiences with the bang and booms of “quote” a typical blockbuster movie. For me, it’s the stories of the people trapped inside this world that are intriguing and horrific. A few coworkers and I were talking about how effed up the tales within this insane world of The Purge could be. How the series could easily progress into a Tales from the Crypt or better yet a Saw-like franchise. Have each movie exist as its own film but continue to exploit the concept of The Purge in every iteration. One a year — on the same day — the audience enters a scenario where someone has to live out the danger that is this horrible day. We as the voyeurs of cinema are the only ones privy to the ghastliness happening to either the protagonist or antagonist. Much like the first movie with the family trapped inside their home with would-be killers trying to enter, we experience their horrific ordeal as they attempt at all means to survive. King Up High also includes a movie and short story, so don't hesitate to check out the page
Is Wonder Woman as much a triumph for women within the Hollywood industry is it just a much-needed victory for Warner Bros. and the DCEU universe? Unlike the movies from its cinematic predecessors, Wonder Woman opened the weekend to prescreening praise and that highly sought after Rotten Tomatoes score. With so much animosity over the validity of critics these days and the effect they have on a film's opening success at the box office, one can indeed argue that good word of mouth can and will influence how a film is received by potential ticket buyers. Failures of titles like Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman placed a stigma on all future releases within this DC comic book movie franchise, but is it fair to judge a film based on the success of a franchise? As much bad wrap as those films received, they have a good return on investment, ultimately making that film a studio success. Wonder Woman, DC's first highly touted film, scored big with positive ratings from critics associated with the popular movie website Rotten Tomatoes. As much as they (the critics) decry accusations that sites such as RT have a negative effect on a film's opening success, the proof is in the pudding. Wonder Woman was certified fresh at 94% and performed better than the horribly rated Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Baywatch which both opened a week before. Is the word of the critic word really that important, and if so are sites like Rotten Tomatoes inadvertently controlling the industry by proxy? Before She Was Wonder Woman, She Was Diana - REVIEW I found myself at odds with wanting to like this movie as much as everyone else LOVED this movie. I mean, it got a 94% percent on Rotten Tomatoes so I should like it right… right? That’s the odd nature of criticism and human behavior. It’s our nature to not want to be at odds with the masses-- to just accept whatever is popular instead of forming our own opinion or being truthful to our own opinion. A movie gets a horrible rating and automatically it's cemented in your mind that the aforementioned movie is a film you would rather not spend money to go and see. Access to such information has taken the risk out of watching movies. Whether you hate or love a movie, isn’t it more of the experience we seek to obtain? Or is it that we would rather save our money than take a chance on a film that may disappoint us? I was excited by the idea that Wonder Woman would be the best movie of the summer — even better than Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. That last scene in B vs V left me wanting more of the Amazonian warrior who faced off with Doomsday as Superman moped and Batman hid. However, it just didn’t rock my world as it apparently rocked for other people. All those positive reviews and movie was just okay. Sorry, status quo. When asked, “So what did you think?” I bit my tongue a little, I admit. Why? Because I believed my feelings towards this movie were maybe too subjective to really debate whether or not this iteration of Wonder Woman met my criteria as the Wonder Woman film I wanted to watch. Bre, a contributor to If three by space and friend, shared the same sentiment. Finally!, Someone else who thought the movie was meh. I’m usually very candid about my reactions towards a film, never really holding my tongue. I even waited to hear Bre's reaction before I could truthfully respond to her about whether I liked the movie. To my surprise, she too did not share in the hoopla that is Wonder Woman Praise Mania. Instead of disseminating my negative thoughts onto you. I wanted to understand why it is that I did not share the same sentiment about this take on the iconic 1/3 of the Superhero Trinity. Wonder Woman isn’t exactly an innovative film, especially within this overly saturated market of comic book inspired movies. Sure, it’s the first movie helmed by a female director featuring a female comic book character to gross over $100 million dollars. The accomplishment should be heralded as much as celebrated by every director and actor in the industry. However, we can’t focus on the success of this film as a solitary achievement that will change the nature of the film culture. The truth remains that this is just one film about a superhero that took many years to make primarily because studios didn’t want to take a risk. Only after her appearance in B vs S were they finally convinced that they could make money off of this character. Within the current narrative of the DC Universe movie, a stand-alone Wonder Woman film is just a life preserver floating atop an empty ocean. It doesn’t fit within the current narrative which began with Superman and continued into B vs S and should have just gone on with The Justice League. Opposite of Marvel, they would have to introduce the character after the debut of the ensemble team. However, WW was riding a wave of excitement and it was a smart business move to make a standalone film now instead of later when the fervor subsides. So, stop with the praise that this is a home run for female artists in the film industry. The numbers say it all and as of 2016, women comprised just 7 percent of all directors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films. Wonder Woman was poised to do well at the box office. Maybe not 100 million opening well but as with all the movies before it, Jenkins would have eventually obtained this title of a person who made a movie for a studio that grossed a lot of money. Consider the Fate of the Furious as a perfect example: There was this brief celebration of F. Gary Gray becoming the first black $1billion director. Kudos goes to the work he put in to make the film what it became but his efforts weren’t all that pushed this film to its incumbent success. The Furious franchise is eight films in and continues to perform no matter who is in the director's chair. Wonder Woman will eventually make a bazillion dollars but let’s not focus on solely on numbers, that’s studio mumbo jumbo, but rather the time and effort and vision of Patty Jenkins who never directed an action movie and her muse Gal Gadot who had some big red boots to fill; they deserve more respect for their efforts than an entrance into the all boys 100 million dollar club. Much of what other people liked about the movie or continue to blab on about, I did not particularly find impressive enough to consider an indifference to mainstream movie fandom. And as I tried to reason with myself about the supposed greatness of this film, I realized that it was all haberdashery; dressing up my opinion of the film to appeal to the overall consensus. Wonder Woman: The Good, The Bad, The Cheesy Wonder Woman wasn’t that great of a movie, however, I was interested in why I do not hold the same opinions as others. So, I read a few reviews and talked with a few people who also watched the movie and pulled from those resources and conversations good and bad aspects of the film that might help me form a different opinion of Wonder Woman on a second viewing. I am a firm believer that it takes more than one viewing to fully appreciate a film and with that, I am willing to sway my own opinion based on further insight into why people like this movie so much. Here, I debate a view arguments and positives about the film that struck as the more important conversational starters. DC Enters the Light Yes, Wonder Woman had endearing flirtatiousness with her naiveté fish out of water story beat. The scene on the boat with her and Trevor talking about sex was kinda funny until you listen to the dialog and realize Trevor the gentleman is really just a horny man dog. I didn’t necessarily need them to showcase their sexual attraction so openly. Diana had a mission and her mission was to destroy Ares. This flirty school girl/ guy routine was only a way to exploit Diana’s innocence for a joke. There was this wardrobe changing scene that was funny and more along the joke spectrum I consider effective enough to represent Diana’s adverse emersion into regular society. Using common stereotypes and customs that defined women during the 1930’s and 1940’s (and today) was a fun way to show not only Diana’s ignorance but strongly rooted Amazonian female roots and female empowerment. Female Empowerment Gadot handled herself quite impressively in the scenes where the omnipresence of men conflicted with her beliefs, and it was those vulnerable moments that identified with Diana’s key character trait; empathy. Diana Meet Steve: The Cheesy Rom-Com Y’know what’s sexier than a sex scene? Not having a sex scene. I mean c’mon, Diana just met Trevor and sure, in the heat of battle things can get a little hot and heavy but why does it have to end with her beckoning Trevor with a longing gaze as he closes the bedroom door. I would think any woman involved with this script would be like: "What? No… eww/" But I guess when the director renounces cheesy as a word, you get a scene like that. It’s like when Kevin and Winnie’s first kiss, and yes this is a Wonder Years analogy but it applies to all romantic comedies where two people in love want to be together but extenuating circumstances keep them apart. Ex. Felicity and Scott Speedman, Diane and Sam, Buffy and Angel. With all those examples, those couples had to endure many setbacks before they became a couple. The kiss between Winnie and Kevin only happens after Winnie disses him over and over again. The longing builds up the tension for the final moment or season ending episode when Kevin finds Winnie in a clearing sitting on a rock gazing off into nowhere. He drapes his jacket over Winne’s shoulders and holds her close with one arm around her shoulders. Slowly she’s drawn to him and their lips meet for that first kiss as When a Man Loves a Woman plays over the soundtrack. Picture the final moment of Wonder Woman with such a longing looming over Diana and Steve. One kiss and boom that’s all the sex those two needed — their relationship would transcend into something more, and that’s love, that’s a great scene. Here’s looking at you kid. It’s not that the supposed sex scene in Wonder Woman was cheesy, it just wasn’t necessary. Empathy and strength in the presence of adversity. The Origin Story Mashup: What works best towards the Wonder Woman narrative is all about how much you know. Diana is a princess, check. She was molded from clay, check. Zeus is her father, check. Trevor crashes onto the island of Thermasyoiuoiu, check. Diana fights in disguise to win an opportunity to join Trevor on a mission to the US, not checked. Diana loves Trevor, check. Wonder Woman didn’t come to save mankind, Diana was in love. The hero thing came after and the movie attempts to mold these ideas together to sculpt an imperfect god-like figure who could as easily destroy man and succumb to him just the same. George Perez created the Ares narrative in the first issue of the 1986 reboot of the series in which Wonder Woman doesn’t leave the island to chase after Steve Trevor but she leaves to fight Ares. As with all comic book movies, they usually pick and choose which storylines work the best for their project then find a way to tell a version of a story that appeals to the premise of selling tickets. Henceforth, why the plots of X-men, Suicide Squad, Spider-man 3, fail to work as a fully developed story ideas. Writers are usually asked to put too much into a two-hour movie and when doing so they add too much or leaving out a very crucial parts to a storyline that spanned my ten to twenty issues. No Man’s Land Arguably the best scene in the movie almost did not make it into the film. Here’s Patty Jenkins: It’s my favorite scene in the movie and it’s the most important scene in the movie. It’s also the scene that made the least sense to other people going in, which is why it’s a wonderful victory for me. I think that in superhero movies, they fight other people, they fight villains. So when I started to really hunker in on the significance of No Man’s Land, there were a couple people who were deeply confused, wondering, like, ‘Well, what is she going to do? How many bullets can she fight?’ And I kept saying, ‘It’s not about that. This is a different scene than that. This is a scene about her becoming Wonder Woman.’ I agree with her every word. When thinking subjectively about why something does or does not work we tend to not take into consideration the art of creating a moment like this. It’s not about how much sense it makes -- we all know there was no mystic Amazon warrior fighting battles in WWI. The No Man’s Land scene was more about the atrocities of war and sanctimony of battle. Diana would conquer the unconquerable, a stretch of land littered with hundreds of dead soldiers for the morally good, and not just to kill an enemy but to save the people. This particular fight was bigger than even Ares himself as in that moment Diana wore her heart outside of her chest fighting for the greater good and not the purpose of war. Scoop Du Jour One of the better stories about Wonder Woman stems from the origins of the comic book character and her creator Dr. William H. Marston. Jill Lepore, the author of the book The Secret History of Wonder Woman wrote an article for The Smithsonian which describes the scandalous beginnings of Wonder Woman and DC Comics. Marston was a jack of all trades, a psychologist, scientist, and lawyer who started his work with DC Comics in 1941. As a move to help curtail the onslaught of criticism from the media and watchdog groups, Maxwell Charles Gaines creator of DC Comics, took to an idea from Marston to create a female character who among the likes of Superman and Batman would help to soften the violence and sexual nature of the current pulp comic narrative. Little did Gaines know that Wonder Woman would bring him more attention than he so desired. The debut of the Diana from the mystic Amazonian Paradise Island was immediately met with overall disdain. The number one complaint: They didn’t like the way she was dressed. Too much skin, they shouted as they burned images of Wonder Woman clothed in nothing but a tight red top, underwear, a lasso, and boots. Burn the witch! Okay, it’s wasn’t that dramatic but isn’t the same type of anger expressed whenever a woman come outs against the status quo? Past the cover and onto page one clothing just the tip of the anger-berg. Images of bondage and not-so-subtle feminist messaging throughout the comic caused for a plea that the comic be remove from the shelves and restricted from children! Such vile content would warp the minds of the adolescence and cause them to commit horrible acts of debauchery in the future. Luckily Gaines, a physiologist, could defend Wonder Woman in reality as she defended herself on the page, but it was not easy. In this article, Lepore touches upon Marston and his relationship with his wife Elizabeth Holloway, and live in love affair, Olive Byrne. Their love story had nothing to do with Wonder Woman per say. The trio would manage to keep their polyamorous living situation a secret going so far as to introduce Byrne as a widowed cousin who needed a place to stay. Labels and stereotypes are used to keep people shackled to an idea of conformity, so instead of wearing a ring, Olive Byrne wore two bracelets. Marston, Byrne, and Holloway all had ties to the feminist Suffrage movement and when you consider this history, Wonder Woman the character — her meaning— takes a different shape as she may have been a character birthed from idea but she molded into a model of female empowerment that exemplifies struggle, strength, and overall empathy towards mankind. Guardians of the Galaxy is a celestial space painting that maintains the fun of the comic book genre with bright lights, witty banter, and a great soundtrack to overlay what is another great achievement for every VFX artist, writer, and cinematographer who worked to make this film an enjoyable and successful sequel. If you strip away the cosmic space battles, celestial beings, and a talking trash monkey, you have a western and the Guardians of the Galaxy are just cowboys. So, for my main dish, I want to “discuss space as a great setting for the modern day western (or comic book movie). With studios concentrating so much of their yearly budgets on blockbuster films, they are releasing fewer films each year, which hurts movie theater chains and invites the question: are online services, like, Netflix killing movies. Oooh, such a saucy debate. I don’t think Netflix is killing movies, but I do believe it’s making the market very competitive.

Will audiences remain Split over M. Night Shyamalan? Short answer, yes. Long answer, here in this episode. For starters: the newer generation or Millennials are unwitting to Shyamalan's filmmaking pedigree. They did not have to suffer or endure the turbulent times of the early 2000’s when Shyamalan made films consistently. People bought tickets wanting that good old feeling from The Sixth Sense and in return received Signs; which we learned alien hate is real, The Village; maybe too much twist in the twist ending; and Lady in the Water, too much talking, no ghosts. Moviegoers today are unaware of the seesaw ride Shyamalan put us through after The Sixth Sense debut at the 2003 Cannes Festival (the movie tied with Captain Conan that year for the top prize). Shyamalan was heralded as the next Alfred Hitchcock or some offshoot of the famous British Master of Suspense. We expected each film he produced after Sixth Sense to frightened the bejeezus out of us with his shrillmatic style. However, that didn’t happen. The thrill was gone but not necessarily eliminated. My attempt to find some correlation between Die Hard and It's A Wonderful Life. They said it would be impossible, challenge accepted! John McClain, a New York cop visiting Los Angeles for the holidays stumbles upon a band of would-be terrorists who take over the building of his wife's employer. Only true fans consider Die Hard a Christmas movie. Headshots and maniacal Germans; it’s not exactly the true definition of a holiday movie. The movie is rated R but so is Love Actually and we love that raunch-laden film. Try to sell Diehard to a family undecided on what to watch after dinner and unwrapping present and you're sure to be outvoted and stuck with watching the same ol’ classics from the early age of black and white film. Classics such as A Christmas Carol (1938), Scrooge (1935), and A Miracle on 34th Street (1947) are the instant go to movies for the genre neutral family dynamics. These are grade A movies with wholesome storylines that really bring forth the true meaning of Christmas and goodwill to all humans. Not to be left off this list of ol' timely classics is It’s A Wonderful Life (1946). A film about a man, George Bailey played by James Stewart who had his lifelong dreams and ambitions derailed by his duty to family, friends, and an unpromising future. But besides the obvious differences of technicolor, guns, and Paul Gleason, Die Hard is no less the feel-good holiday movie of It’s a Wonderful Life and should be on the must-watch list of every family who celebrates Christmas. So, if you're the only hope standing between a boring evening of watching feel-good movies of the 1940's, I urge you to stick to your guns and put your foot on grandma's neck. Give that old gal a sip of whiskey and walk her to that favorite and have her enjoy some holiday action with Bruce Willis as the Cowboy Who Saves Christmas for all.
Jerry and Chris get into the Christmas spirit by watching a few great television Christmas episodes from yesteryear and today.
Edge of Seventeen A coming of age story about a girl just dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. The joy about this film is that it takes you along the emotional rollercoaster that spans thirty days this young lady’s life. You feel the high and lows of what is a great depiction of the life of a teenager dealing with whatever good and bad comes her way. Bleed For This Great story. Bad movie. With such a great cast, this movie lacked the emotional depth of say a Raging Bull and Rocky. Why is it that boxing movies or movies related to boxing feel the need to showcase more of the sport than the emotional and psychological aspect the athletic endures during training and after fighting. There was no need to show this character getting pummeled in the ring when he had to fight through so much after being broken by a tragic event not related to boxing. An Appetizing Review: “Arrival", the new movie starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Based on the short story "The Story of Your Life" by Tim Chaing, Arrival is a metaphysical alien to Earth story which tells the story of a linguist who is recruited to help the government deal with an alien visitor. We asked the question: What if humans had a simultaneous consciousness and could discern the future? If we know the future and there is no free will how does one exist with the knowledge of knowing what life indefinitely has in store for you? Live in the now and be an alien in your own skin and look at the world and life with curiosity and the propensity to learn. This episode begins a series of recordings centered around stars from the wide world of wrestling who transitioned from the mat to the big screen. Hulk Hogan was one the first prolific wrestlers from the Golden Age to attempt branching out of wrestling and extend his popularity to the movies where his over-the-top persona could possibly bloom a career apart from slaps, punches, and body slams. Movie Reviews Chris watched "The Wild Life" and walked out. Apparently, this Robinson Curoso-esque movie could not hold his attention for the ninety-minute duration of the movie. JJ watched "Sully "and explains this movie as Clint Eastwood fighting with kids gloves on. This was the story of the Landing on The Hudson without the Hollywood touch. Clint did his job with this film and just told the story as Captain Sullinger only landing the plane. Chris Quote: "The perfect movie for your grandma." Movie Suggestion of the Week: Suburban Commando 1. Shelly Duvall Did Stanley Kubrick break Shelly Duvall? She was good in this movie but seems to have hammed it up a lot. Shelly hasn't been in a movie for some time and so we question why? Was it because she goes out of Hollywood or did Hollywood grow away from her? We recorded the very first episode of Talking With Burritos in February of 2014. Unbreakable was the movie subject and eating burritos was a delicious bad idea; it seems people don't enjoy hearing you trash paper wrappers and chew your food while on mic. Go figure. With the movie playing on the television, Josh, Adam, Chris and Jerry discussed Unbreakable scene by scene. We recorded for almost four hours and had a great time breaking down what is by far M. Night Shaymalan's best movie while building it up with the praise it rightly deserves. Our appreciation for this movie spurred the desire for us to bring our random work discussions to a shareable platform for people like us to enjoy and hopefully relate. In this episode we go back and reminisce about how this podcast began and where it's going, and also why we chose to revisit M. Night Shaymalan's Unbreakable ever year until this podcast ends or we cease to exist.
Ghostbusters isn't getting a sequel. Well, that's what the word is now based on projections that the remake film is likely to post a seventy million dollar loss. Could it have been a backlash from that awful first trailers, sexism, or is it a poorly made movie? In this episode, Chris and Jerry give their reaction to the movie while playing The Watchmen video game. It was an interesting endeavor that excited an fierce debate on whether Ghostbusters (2016) is a remake or a requel. Could the worse of the worst DC’s villains prove to be heroes to WB’s extended universe? Suicide Squad has the potential to ruin Warner Bros. plans to green light movies for their least iconic characters. Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman films are currently swimming upstream as WB struggles to maintain some key name directors and writers attached to the fledging productions. The well received Wonder Woman trailers seems promising, but, the Justice League's Comic-Con spot failed to convince audiences scorned by Batman v Superman that Warner Bros and Zach Snyder have vision of a better tomorrow. Funny how the plot line for Suicide Squad aptly applies to the current state of affairs at WB studios. In the movie, the fate of the world rest in the hands of a team of criminals. In reality, the fate of many movie investments rest in the success of a Suicide Squad. A successful trailer is not only a preview but an exciting sales pitch to existing and would be video gamers. Major studios and independents flock to E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, to present upcoming video games and console releases. The media reports and fans drool over what is always a great time of the year. In this episode, Chis and Jerry discuss a few notable game trailer showcased at this event we only hope to one day attend. 1. Resident Evil:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-WFOJK7h4g The trailer was quite boring and reminiscent of a 90’s Nine Inch Nails movie video instead of a product sales pitch to consumers. There was a lot of random disturbing imagery without much reference to the game. Cool aesthetic but the inclusion of gameplay footage would definitely lent itself beneficial to the fan fare of what looks like a return to the original Resident Evil concept. 2. ReCore:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnKT9ZCGgBE Awesome E3 game trailer. At the very start, the music prepare us for the adventure we are experience with this character and his/her many gadgets and par core skills. The use of game play footage in this particular trailer entices the viewer more as it appeases both the senses of sight as well as the sense of hearing — it was the perfect onslaught of “yeah, you wanna buy this game.” Don’t know what it’s about though but what does that matter, right? 3. We Happy Few: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc67_BrCdPc Great trailer from a game from a different time. I just knew something was about to happen when these vaudevillian characters repeatedly strikes this piñata pig over and over again and it doesn’t sound hollow. Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5PpUB3fU8s Does this game look like Bioshock to you. There is some sort confusion among gamers who are comparing the two as they share an artist look. 4. Mass Effect Andromeda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk_s2oPlTKY A relatively short trailer with a great thematic score. This trailer includes behind the scene footage and game play imaginary. 5. What makes a successful video game trailer is the ability to appease the crowd. Nowadays, people who are unable to attend physically are able to stream the event at their homes or at participating movie theaters. So although we may no be in attendance, we can all pseudo immerse ourselves within the environment and enjoy the fervor of the moment. We both agree that music and gameplay are crucial to a video game trailer. And Jerry, believes that giving the viewer just a hit of a story line will have future purchasers clamoring for that pre-purchase sale. As we look forward into the future and can clearly see our impending doom isn't it basic human curiosity to wonder how you might kill time during an apocalypse. In this episode Chris and Jerry delve into the subject as we ponder how we might spend or last days/months/years on earth. What's the best apocalyptic scenario to endure? This Is The End, duh. Go Franco! And oh, yeah, that movie X-men Apocalypse. X-Men Apocalypse Did we enjoy the movie? At this point who the hell cares. X-men was just another character heavy movie by Bryan Singer that does very little to showcase the depth its characters and importance of the X-men to the Marvel Universe. To put it simply: keep it simple. Make a movie about the X-men and leave out the exposition. We’ve been there, done that, and now we’re just tired. Sure you can show us Jubilee in a cameo, but why should we care? You messed up Wolverine Origins and so why not throw in Weapon X. It’s all an fare and it’s now recently been proven that the viewing public just doesn’t care any more. Singer has run his course as director of this franchise and until they dump him and widen their narrow view of what we the public/fans need to see of the X-men, Fox may as well close the chapter on attempting to make money off the X-men and focus on making better movies in general. Justice League Movie Title I saw this article which mentioned Warner Bros. were close to releasing the exact title to the Justice League Movie. At the time of this recording the title of the movie was Justice League: Part One, but after some fact checking we discovered the title to be Justice League. That’s right Justice League. A man and his child struggle to stay alive in an apocalyptic world where dead is a blessing and living is a curse. “Death is a luxury." How do you motivate yourself to live when there is no hope? Humans have a nature instinct to survive but when there is no hope why is it that some people will be able to forge and find that little bit of hope to help motivate them to live. Are there any good guys in an Apocalypse? There can be no good people during a Apocalypse. No matter how righteous you are, when you are fighting to live — even if you kill to protect — you are not good. Righteous Quote: "There’s No Good or Evil at the End of the World There is only You" Righteous Quote:" A legend is what you do and not who you are." Fallout with Chris 34:34 How Do You Kill Time During An Apocalypse, really? Seriously, we do not know. It all depends on the scenario. Whether it's by nuclear war, a natural disaster, or The Rapture. We can prepare ourselves for whats to come until we're thrust into that position of "I must live." Prepare all you want. Start collecting canned goods now but we are not truly prepared until the moment becomes real and our true survival instinct kick in and define who we are when the apocalypse is upon us. We take a stab at the news with This, That, and The Ugly. Our version of reporting what's not right in the world.
The summer is most notably an incredible time for Hollywood and the blockbuster movie; however, with the decline or of the marquee performer/(bankable) actor or franchise, this summer, as with the previous summer comes off as just meh on the Richter scale of expectation. There are so many movies opening within a span of three months, so there has to be one gem of a film that will shine bright among the dullness of the remake and sequel... right? Will it be X-men or Ghostbuster? Independence Day: Resurrection? What will be the movie to make this summer of movies worth the price of admission? In this episode we review Angry Birds, Nice Guys, and Neighbors 2 and we ponder the next couple of months in movies with the hopes of finding one film that will spark our interest and save this year of meh so far.
