Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're celebrating “Dreddruary,” where we cover movies based on the British comic book character, Judge Dredd! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Sylvester Stallone's misguided 1995 schlockfest, Judge Dredd!Recycled food! Bedazzled codpieces! Distracting lifts! A cool, creepy cyborg! A shockingly sneaky, giant robot! Lethal holograms! Futuristic court drama! Stylish garbs of justice designed by Gianni Versace! A strong score by Predator's Alan Silvestri and cinematography by Aliens' Adrian Biddle! An original song from The Cure! A surprisingly faithful comic adaptation in every way except for the lead character! A visual treat with incredible production design, animatronics, and visual effects, including one of the greatest fictional mega cities in cinema! A solid cast that includes James Remar (briefly), Armand Assante, Max von Sydow, Diane Lane, Rob Schneider unfortunately, and Sylvester Stallone's ego derailing the movie! Dark themes of police corruption and eugenics in this silly movie that maybe works better as a disappointing sequel to Demolition Man, from a frustrated director who loved both the source material and apparently Blade Runner! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Captain America: Brave New World, Oz Perkins' new horror comedy, The Monkey, and the final nail in the Sonyverse coffin, Kraven the Hunter! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. We've got Linda Blair! Pioneer Scream Queen, 70s and 80s Hollywood Trailblazer, Golden Globe Winner, cult classic icon, animal rights activist and humanitarian, Linda joins us for an exclusive conversation about her path to self discovery in a terrifying lane she navigated solo, carving her way towards light and purpose. Linda and Fritz share a history in philanthropy. They catch up on The Linda Blair Worldheart Foundation, dedicated to rehabilitating and rehoming abused, neglected and abandoned animals. We then trace Linda's groundbreaking history from her work as a child model to landing the controversial role of a child possessed by the devil in the film adaption of THE book of the decade, The Exorcist. Linda then faced the bumpy task of discovering self while convincing friends, fans and reporters that she was not actually demonic. She went on to define the message-driven TV movie genre in Sarah T. Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic and  Born Innocent. But how could she say no to Exorcist II, co-starring Richard Burton?Raised in the Protestant faith, charity, benevolence and helping the voiceless were ingrained in Linda from childhood. For the past several decades she has been dedicated to animal welfare and she shares the most pressing concerns on that front: 1) Corporate owned veterinary clinics pricing pet owners out of spaying and neutering, 2) Mass euthanasia in dog shelters and 3) The outlawing and extermination of breeds deemed to be “dangerous.”We delve into Linda's experience on the set of The Exorcist where much of what was asked of her by director, William Friedkin was not healthy or appropriate for a child actor. She did share a close bond with writer, William Peter Blatty and she describes how Max Von Sydow would often hear the lines given to Linda, stop the scene, pull Billy Friedkin aside and say, “What are you doing!?” But Friedkin got what he wanted, a terrifyingly controversial film that stunned and horrified the world. A household name since the age of 14, Linda matured into a young actress with head turning, Rick themed romantic relationships, such as Rick Springfield and Rick James! Linda shares how her Pumpkin headed turn on The Masked Singer helped her solve a medical mystery. She describes her heroic rescue of 51 dogs after Hurricane Katrina and she takes on a challenging round of IMDB Roulette. Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Bad Sisters on Apple TV + and the Telepathy Tapes podcast.Path Points of Interest:Linda BlairLinda Blair on WikipediaLinda Blair on InstagramLinda Blair on FacebookGoing Vegan by Linda BlairLinda Blair World Heart FoundationLinda Blair World Heart Foundation on FacebookLinda Blair World Heart Foundation on IGLinda Blair World Heart Foundation on YouTubeThe Telepathy TapesBad Sisters Trailer

When it comes to films that have left a lasting mark on the horror genre, few can rival the terrifying power of The Exorcist (1973). Directed by William Friedkin and adapted from William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, The Exorcist shattered boundaries with its unflinching portrayal of demonic possession and the battle between good and evil. Released in December 1973, the film captivated audiences and sparked controversy for its graphic content and shocking themes. This review will explore why The Exorcist (1973) remains a pinnacle of horror cinema, from its groundbreaking storytelling to its cultural and cinematic significance.A Simple Story Elevated by Complex ThemesAt its core, The Exorcist (1973) tells a simple yet profoundly disturbing story. It revolves around the possession of a young girl, Regan MacNeil (played by Linda Blair), and the desperate efforts of her mother, Chris (Ellen Burstyn), to save her. The family's only hope rests with two priests, Father Karras (Jason Miller) and the seasoned exorcist, Father Merrin (Max von Sydow). While the premise seems straightforward—a child in peril, religious figures battling a supernatural force—the film digs deeper into themes of faith, guilt, and the fragility of human existence. One of the key elements that makes The Exorcist so unsettling is its exploration of faith, or rather, the loss of it. Father Karras is a man wracked by doubt. He's a priest who has lost his mother, a psychiatrist struggling to reconcile his beliefs with the suffering he sees in the world. His personal crisis mirrors the larger question the film asks: what do we do when confronted with something truly evil? This is the tension at the heart of The Exorcist, elevating the film from mere shock value to something far more existential and terrifying.Unforgettable PerformancesThe performances in The Exorcist (1973) are nothing short of iconic, particularly that of Linda Blair as the possessed Regan. Blair's transformation from a sweet, innocent child to a terrifying vessel for a demon is astonishing. It's a performance that pushes the limits of what was previously expected from child actors, and it's still regarded as one of the most chilling portrayals in horror history. Her physical and emotional range—enhanced by the groundbreaking makeup effects of Dick Smith—leaves a lasting impact. Every contorted expression every guttural sound that emerges from her during the possession sequences is haunting.Ellen Burstyn's portrayal of a desperate mother is equally powerful. Chris MacNeil's descent from a successful actress to a mother on the verge of breakdown is heart-wrenching. The film builds up her growing terror and helplessness as Regan worsens, creating a harrowing portrait of maternal despair.Jason Miller's conflicted Father Karras is a revelation. His nuanced performance of a man wrestling with his faith adds emotional depth to the film's supernatural elements. Meanwhile, Max von Sydow's Father Merrin is the stoic, wise counterpoint to Karras' inner turmoil. Although Merrin's character is more of a traditional hero, von Sydow brings gravitas and world-weariness to the role, making the final confrontation all the more gripping.Pushing the Boundaries of Special EffectsIn 1973, audiences had never seen anything quite like The Exorcist. The special effects, many of which were practical, broke new ground in horror filmmaking. From Regan's spider-walk down the stairs to the levitation scenes, the film's visual shocks have become legendary. The makeup that transforms Blair's face into something grotesque, the vomit spewing, the rotating head—these effects still hold up today and remain unsettling even in a world where digital effects dominate. But it's not just the visual effects that make The Exorcist so memorable. The sound design plays a crucial role in heightening the terror. The eerie soundscape, from the unnatural voices Regan speaks to, to the house's creaking, creates a sensory overload that gets under your skin. And who could forget Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells? While not initially composed for the film, the track has become synonymous with The Exorcist, its hypnotic rhythm forever tied to the creeping sense of dread the movie invokes.Cultural Impact and ControversyThe release of The Exorcist (1973) sparked widespread debate and controversy. Audiences were reportedly fainting, vomiting, and fleeing theatres in panic due to the intensity of the film. In fact, the film was banned in several countries and faced resistance from religious groups who considered it blasphemous. The stark depiction of exorcism and the visceral horrors it presented hit a nerve with the public. It challenged not just what could be shown on screen but how far filmmakers could push the boundaries of audience tolerance.Despite—or perhaps because of—its controversy, The Exorcist was a massive commercial success. It became the first horror film nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, ultimately taking home two Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. More importantly, it shifted the landscape of horror cinema. The film proved that horror could be more than just campy monster flicks or psychological thrillers; it could be raw, visceral, and deeply disturbing. It opened the door for a more sophisticated brand of horror, one that wasn't afraid to tackle profound themes alongside graphic imagery.Enduring LegacyWhat makes The Exorcist (1973) endure over fifty years later is not just its capacity to shock but its ability to ask timeless questions. The film doesn't merely present a battle between good and evil; it challenges viewers to confront their own beliefs about the nature of evil, faith, and redemption. This is why The Exorcist still resonates with audiences today—it forces us to consider the fragility of the human condition and the possibility that something incomprehensible, something truly terrifying, may lurk in the shadows. Moreover, The Exorcist set the bar for future horror films, influencing a generation of filmmakers. Its blend of psychological depth, religious horror, and disturbing imagery can be seen in countless horror classics that followed, from The Omen to Hereditary. The film also left its mark on pop culture, referencing Regan's possession and the infamous exorcism scenes becoming staples in parody, tribute, and analysis.Final ThoughtsThe Exorcist (1973) remains one of the most important and influential films in horror history. Its stellar performances, groundbreaking special effects, and thought-provoking themes make it more than just a scary movie—it's a cinematic experience that forces audiences to confront their deepest fears. Whether you've seen it once or a dozen times, The Exorcist never loses its power to horrify, disturb, and provoke. As a film that redefined the genre and pushed cinematic and cultural boundaries, it stands as a testament to what horror can achieve when it's done right. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

Don't be fooled by the shelves upon shelves of useless crap, Leland Gaunt will run down to his little basement to get the thing you most desire in this world. In Stephen King's Needful Things (1993), the Devil (maybe) comes to Castle Rock to sow discord between the good townsfolk. And whilst he proves he can see the future, he fails to predict just how boring two hours of cinema can be.Music created by Jack Parsons.Follow us on Twitter & Instagram and check out our YouTube channel.

Nancy Linehan Charles sits down with Greg and Dustin to talk about crying, dying, smoking, and yelling. She also gives all of us great life advice. Nancy Linehan Charles has been a professional actor for more than 40 years. She has appeared in plays from off-Broadway to regional to summer stock. Her favorite roles on the stage include the lead in The Visit, for which she won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, and her featured performance in Toys in the Attic, for which she won both the Ovation Award and the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award. Her film work includes playing Ben Affleck's mother in The Way Back; Max Von Sydow's wife in Steven Spielberg's Minority Report; Ned Beatty's wife in Mike Nichols' Charlie Wilson's War; and appearances in Testify and Rob Zombie's Lords of Salem. She has shot close to 100 guest-starring roles on TV, including Shameless, Bosch, NCIS: Los Angeles, Criminal Minds, Grimm, Better Things, The West Wing and ER, to name a few, plus a recurring role on the CBS hit Young Sheldon. Charles is also the artistic director of a flash mob Shakespeare company called Salty Shakespeare. Her company flashes bits of the Bard in crowded elevators, or in the coffee line at Starbucks, or anywhere that seems inappropriate. In 2014, the Los Angeles Times called Salty Shakespeare “the best flash mob Shakespeare company in L.A.”—not mentioning that it's the ONLY flash mob Shakespeare company in L.A. Salty Shakespeare lives up to its motto of “Erupting, Interrupting, Disturbing the Peace.” Charles holds a Master's degree in theatre, was a marathon runner and is the mother of two fine young men: Charlie Linehan, a lawyer in the field of Cyber Investigation, and Will Rothhaar, a working actor.  Listen to the conversation, get some good news, and have some laughs with the guys on Good Things Are Happening. This week, Gary Fisher (The Senior Geek) is joining the show to talk about seeing The Exorcist for the very first time. Often cited as "The Scariest Movie ever Made", it's about a young girl named Reagan who is possesed by a demon. Or is she? The doctors don't seem to think so, but her mother knows something is happening, and she looks to Father Karras for help. Starring Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Jason Miller, and Max Von Sydow. Is this movie as scary as it's reputation makes it out to be? Or is it just a long and somewhat boring movie from the 1970s? Let's fine out...Check out Gary's newletter, Diary of a Senior Geek at seniorgeek.substack.comThanks go out to Audie Norman (@TheAudieNorman) for the album art. On this episode we dive deep into the classic Troma title SURF NAZIS MUST DIE. One of the most legendary exploitation films of all time we go left foot first (Because goofy footing cannot do!) into a movie often looked over because of its title, the company that released it, and that fact that it is PURE exploitation. This film is a gem and we hope you enjoy this UNCUT and UNCENSORED Summer School episode. The following episode is totally uncut and, oh I would say, 97% as close to as what it sounded like the moment we recorded. Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography and impact of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the legendary life and career of Max von Sydow. Best known for his roles as Antonius in The Seventh Seal (1957), Emperor Ming in Flash Gordon (1980), and Father Merrin in The Exorcist (1980), von Sydow is on the list for Halloween consideration given his status as a horror icon. Joined once again by Stephanie Malone of the Fear & Loathing Podcast and so much more, we recount a wild catfishing story, explore Ingmar Bergman's filmography through the lens of von Sydow, contemplate the amount of cultural appropriation in Flash Gordon, parse through the insane plot of Branded (2012), and complement his remarkable longevity as an actor. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.

This year's Scary Movie Month has turned into a month of undisputed horror classics, especially in these one-Ryan shows. Halloween was discussed on October 9th. Now it's time for one of the best-made, freakiest frightfests ever. William Friedkin's mega-blockbuster won 2 Oscars---it should have won more---and it remains beloved in the eyes of many, even if repeated viewings dampen the skin-crawling moments a little. Not that The Exorcist couldn't terrify the uninitiated, even if the greatly-diminishing returns of the 5 sequels have done nothing to continue its legacy. Those mostly-unworthy follow-ups are highlighted here too, but the main event is the 1973 original with Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Max Von Sydow and Jason Miller anchoring the maniacal story about demonic possession and religious faith. For all the remarkable technical achievements on display here, the humanity of the characters is a huge reason this film still works. The emotion between Burstyn and Blair, in particular, hits home. So turn down the lights, turn up the sound and set aside an hour for an Exorcist monologue in this 543rd head-spin of Have You Ever Seen. Spooky Season has arrived!  And what better way to kick it off than to celebrate what many consider to be "The Scariest Movie Ever!" which would be this supernatural psychological thriller first released fifty years ago this coming December.  It was directed by the legendary, recently passed William Friedkin partnering with celebrated author William Peter Blatty adapting his very own best-selling novel of the same name.  The story mainly focuses on a mother and a daughter - successful actress Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) temporarily living in Washington, DC to film a movie and tending to her precocious 12-year old daughter Regan played by Linda Blair.  Sadly and frighteningly, Regan's behavior starts to become more erratic and increasingly violent...she seems dare-I-say POSSESSED. :o Eventually joining the story are two men of the cloth who have been tasked with rescuing Regan from this evil demon - they are Father Karras played by Jason Miller and Father Merrin, the titular exorcist played by Max Von Sydow.  The film would go on to be a instant box office smash along with garnering ten Oscar nominations that year, including for Best Picture and Best Director.  Bust out your holy water and crucifix, it's EXORCISM TIME!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

David Patrick Kelly's training journey - which he considers to be still ongoing - was of the “school of hard knocks” variety - his words. He considered going to Juilliard but couldn't afford it. So he deliberately set out to cobble together a kind of do it yourself conservatory experience. That journey would take him to Paris where he trained with Marcel Marceau and back to America where he would find his way into the avant-garde theater of Richard Foreman, Hollywood action movies like The Warriors, 48 Hours, Last Man Standing, and the strange world of David Lynch's Twin Peaks. He studied with the legendary Russian, Mira Rostova, who famously coached Montgomery Clift. David also asked for - and got - on set tutorials from Christopher Plummer, Max Von Sydow and Chris Walken, in-between takes on the movie sets they shared. In honor of The Exorcist's 50th anniversary, Ian and Cole are compelled to see how William Friedkin's genre-defining horror film stacks up to William Peter Blatty's blockbuster novel! In 1973, Friedkin unleashed a waking nightmare about a Hollywood actress (Ellen Burstyn) whose young daughter (Linda Blair) becomes possessed by a demon. Their only hope is a local priest (Jason Miller) whose crisis of faith happens to coincide with a murderous, telekinetic monster living in his neighborhood--plus an aged exorcist (Max Von Sydow), who is called away from an archaeological dig in Iraq to confront the darkest of horrors. This spoilerific Page2Screen finds Ian and Cole examining the conflicts between faith and science, literature and film, and director's cuts versus original theatrical releases! In 1973, William Friedkin terrorized the world with The Exorcist and then decided to make a film even more grim: a remake of George Clouzot's The Wages of Fear. This was an audacious move, since the 1953 original was already well-loved and regarded as one of the most suspenseful films of all time. But Friedkin followed his muse and created Sorcerer (1977), which belongs in the pantheon of Great Underappreciated Films. Like The Exorcist, it's a frightening peek into Hell; unlike that film, however, evil is pervasive rather than localized. No exorcist can cleanse Porvenir of evil; Max Von Sydow isn't showing up any time soon. You can try to outrun the Sorcerer, but it's like driving a truck and trying to drive away from its contents. Rarely has a completely nihilistic and sobering film experience been so exhilarating. William Friedkin's memoir, The Friedkin Connection, is an engaging read and includes a chapter on the making of Sorcerer. Follow us on Twitter or Letterboxd. Incredible bumper music by John Deley.
