Written & Starring Stephen WinchellAudio Production & Recording by Adam GoronDirected by Lara UnnerstallMusic by Takuya Yoshida & Stephen WinchellREFERENCES:1. When Frasier Crane was only 8 years old he realized his ultimate destiny: like his mother he would heal people through the art and science of psychiatry. (Frasier S8E9 Frasier's Edge)2. Frasier attended Seattle's prestigious Bryce Academy, a preparatory school with an impressive legion of alumni. (Frasier S6E2 Frasier's Curse)3. Frasier's class alone gave the world a heart transplant specialist, a cancer researcher, and a computer software magnate. (Frasier S6E2 Frasier's Curse)4. He was an unathletic, bookish sort and was still a target for bullies. (Frasier S4E2 Love Bites Dog)5. His nickname during his Freshman year was the “Bryce Academy Crier, (Frasier S6E2 Frasier's Curse)6. He made some attempts to remedy this, like joining the football team ((Frasier S5E8 Desperately Seeking Closure) or the woodworking club, ((Frasier S5E10 Where Every Bloke Knows Your Name)7. He never fit in with the popular kids, his only friends were the nerds, students in the debate club, or that exchange student from Abu Dhabi. (Frasier S7E14 Big Crane on Campus)8. He took Spanish and learned the language fluently; (Frasier S2E21 An Affair to Forget)9. [H]e went on to serve as the Grand Panjandrum of the Vocabulary Club (Frasier S4E11 Three Days of the Condo)10. He even began tutoring other students (Frasier S8E21 Semi-Decent Proposal)11. His very first role on stage was Bottom in a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. He received a standing ovation (Frasier S4E19 Three Dates and a Breakup Part 1)12. His role in The Dream led him to mount and direct his very own backyard production of Hamlet, where the star of the show was a skull Frasier stole from one of the Bryce Academy classrooms. (Frasier S9E19 Deathtrap)13. For the trouble, Frasier wrote a short story about the experience that he published in the high schools' literary magazine. It was called, “Through the Clown's Mouth Darkly,” and it went on to take the silver medal in the All-City Fiction contest in 1968.  (Frasier S8E6 Legal Tender Love and Care)14. He also started writing a society column for his school's newspaper using the nom de plume Alastair Mowbray, (Frasier S6E19 IQ)15. 1968 had another important milestone for Frasier: his first kiss. It was with Jill Solomon in one of the science labs at the Bryce Academy. Jill was not thrilled about the experience, and in response she hurt Frasier in such a way that he had to visit the nurses' office. (Frasier S8E17 It Takes Two to Tangle)16. [H]is sexual frustrations became so unbearable that in order to distract himself from them, he constructed a replica submarine big enough to sleep six over the course of six months. He would often play pretend in it, shouting “Fire one! Fire two!” (Cheers S7E2 ‘Swear to God')  17. In one memorable incident, Frasier received a standing ovation night after night for his role as Conrad in Bye Bye Birdy. One student did not enjoy the performance, writing in the Bryce Academy Crier, that “Mr. Crane's attempts to gyrate his hips as Conrad the teen idol in Bye Bye Birdie made this reviewer say, ‘bye bye breakfast.' (Frasier S3E23 The Focus Group)18. Frasier wrote a musical to be performed by the other students and made sure that Niles had a good part. (Frasier S7E13 They're Playing Our Song)19. They even collaborated on the spring musicale, writing cheeky songs that somehow got past the keen eyes of teachers and faculty. (Frasier S1E22 Author, Author)20. [I]n addition to theater, he also joined the Existentialist Club, where he was named “Most Likely to Be,” (Frasier S1E18 And The Whimper Is…)21. [H]e graduated second in his class (Frasier S9E14 Juvenilia)22. Frasier made sure to push himself out of fear that he'd be bested by brainy little Niles. (Frasier S6E19 IQ)  23. On Prom night,  Frasier and his date arrived at the dance in a horse drawn carriage. His date was Niles. The quote-unquote official story was that both of their dates canceled at the last minute and they decided to go stag together. (Frasier S7E23 Something Borrowed Something Blue: Part 1)  24. After renting their house for ten years, the owners of the property - a Mr. and Mrs. Lasskoph- asked the Crane family to vacate. (Frasier S9E19 Deathtrap)25. That summer, Frasier lost his virginity. After four years of unwanted chastity, he began an illicit affair with an older woman - his piano teacher, Miss Clarice Warner. (Frasier S2E1 Slow Tango in South Seattle)26. Many years later, Frasier relayed this story to some drinking buddies in Boston. One of them, Thomas Jay Fallow, would turn it into a bestselling romance novel, “Slow Tango in South Seattle.” (Frasier S2E1 Slow Tango in South Seattle)27. Derek Adam Shreds the Guitar & Teaches How to Rock Out with Heart & Soul  Derek Adam came on to the music scene with his own blend of guitar driven rock and country music. His anthemic songs are full of hooks and heartfelt lyrics that tell the story of his journey. Whether it's an autobiographical tale, guitar driven anthem, drinking song, or Ballard, it's pure Derrek. It all started for him in a small town in Upstate New York, where Derek was surrounded by music at a young age. Guided by his parents' music collection, he developed a deep affection for classic rock and outlaw country. He picked up the guitar at the age of 10 and quickly playing along to all his favorite tracks. He played in local bands throughout high school and gained a reputation as a formidable guitar player. By the time he graduated; it had become clear that music was his career choice. He went on to attend Crane School of Music where he became classically trained on the guitar and learned the fundamentals of writing music. After honing his skills for four years at the university, Derek set his sights on NYC. He moved down to the city and began his climb. He started from the ground up by networking through former college friends and making new acquaintances. Although a writer at heart, his live shows gained a strong following. It wasn't long before he became an in-demand performer on the local scene, building a steadily growing fan base. In the studio, Derek is just as much at home and constantly growing as a musician. He recently had the privilege of working with Grammy winning producer, James “Jimmy T” Meslin of Dream Theater notoriety. This was a milestone as Dream Theater's John Petrucci has always been a strong influence on his guitar playing. Jimmy's influence can be heard on Derek's EP, “Silver Lining” which is laden with guitar driven anthems that show off his rock and roll influences. Most recently, Derek paired up with Kyle Berry, Luke Bryan's former guitar player, to work on new material. Their sessions at Red Panda Recording and with Richie Cannata from Cove City Studios lead to a return to roots for Derek that produced his recently released single, “The Road I Know”. Although it's early in his career, he constantly talks about the good fortune that has fallen upon him. Derek has his feet firmly on the ground while reaching for the stars. “I'm nothing without the love and support of my friends, fans and loved ones. For this, I am forever grateful. With them at my back, there's nowhere to go but upward.”

We also aim to discuss ableism in all forms in the music scene. We also aim to be educational about a wide range of topics in Music Psychology, Music Therapy, and Music Education to continue to create inclusive classrooms and knowledgeable folks. About Courtney: " Courtney Conkling is a flutist, music educator, and mental health advocate from Massapequa, NY. Born a triplet in a family of four, she was encouraged to pursue creative endeavours of all types from a young age: while piano lessons in first grade weren't her cup of tea, flute and beginning band at Birch Lane Elementary stuck and bloomed into a fantastic musical career, with youth orchestras, principal chairs, solos, and All-Area titles galore. While she made the most of the opportunities available to her at SUNY Potsdam and loved studying with Kenneth B Andrews at the Crane School of Music as a young adult, underneath all her success she was struggling with her mental health. When Mr. Andrews suddenly retired, she chose to transfer to Vanderbilt University and study flute with Molly Barth as she pursued a music education degree. Nashville also brought her a new Bipolar I diagnosis and her first psychiatric hospitalizations. After two medical leaves and the ever-evolving COVID crisis, Courtney is about to start studying with Brandon Patrick George at Hofstra University where she hopes to receive her music education degree and expand her musical and educational capabilities as she continues to prioritize her mental health."

Breaking The Third Wall Through Music's Mission statement: The mission of Breaking The Third Wall Through Music is to break the barriers between ableism and music, by bringing a wide range of musicians, regardless of disability, instrument, background, and field of interested across all genres to chat. This week I talked about my personal relationship with disability, ableism and more. This is the first episode of season 2. Season 2 will consist of me talking about a wide range of topics in disability and music (historically, socially, mainstream media, music psychology research, music therapy, etc). A little bit about me: "Tara is a full time Music Education Major with a concentration in Band and Bass Clarinet (Senior), at The Crane School of Music. Allen, originally from Plattsburgh, NY; a 2017 graduate from Beekmantown High School. Allen was recently accepted and will be attending Sheffield University for an MA in Music Psychology in Fall 21'. Allen always knowing she was different from others, at a young age challenged the education system and still continues to. The first about year of her life, she went deaf for a span of time due to fluids being in her ears, prohibiting her extension in language learning. Allen had to take reading, writing, and speech therapy for a large portion of her younger adolescence. Doing very poorly in her younger academics tore her down for quite a while, but she persevered and continued to advocate for herself in the best mannerisms that she could; forever adapting and finding ways to fit her individual needs. Allen was officially diagnosed at the age of 21 with severe ADHD; with possibilities of Dyslexia, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some of her proudest accomplishments are her current research, Music as a Cognitive Skill: Dyslexia and Music, will be being presented at the NAFME National Conference. This research is very dear to her, as she hopes it creates destigmatizations, and helps young children in the classroom because so many children get left undiagnosed and are not diagnosed until adulthood. Allen, hoping to continue breaking barriers in the music scene between ableism and music created the podcast “Breaking The Third Wall In Music”, where she will invite a wide range of disabled musicians to tell their stories, create conversations, and even share research. On the eve of the Election, and after a long hiatus, 120 over 80 is back with our promised discussion of two classic Broadway musicals both of which tell complicated and incomplete stories of our nation’s founding - the wildly popular (and recently released on Disney+) “Hamilton” and the more traditional-though in some ways equally ambitious-“1776” staring William Daniels. In an attempt to involve someone who actually knows what they’re talking about in the conversation we are joined by the lovely and talented Professor Andrea Maas (editors note: she’s married to the host) from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam as we think about these two powerful pieces of art as production objects, entertainment and historical documents. There is SO much we couldn’t get to here, and SO many other voices that would have added to the discussion time and resource permitting but maybe it’s a topic we can revisit. We hope our podcast creates conversations in music across our scene This week I had the honor of having Peter Oselador and Angelina Howard on to talk about Autism, their experiences in music, and learn more about autism in general. A little bit about them: Peter Oselador: "Peter Oselador is a 21-year-old autistic piano and composition student at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. A junior in the program, he has written heavily for acoustic ensembles of all sizes and instrumental makeups, and is currently studying electronic composition. In addition to his degree concentrations, Peter also sings and plays trumpet in several of Crane's ensembles, and has vested interests in contemporary classical, jazz, video game soundtracks, and several other styles. His hobbies outside of music include coffee, speedcube solving, 1A yoyoing, video games, and bike riding. Peter is currently in the process of writing a duet for bass clarinet and violin, and will soon begin composing a piece for two pianos." Angelina Howard: " Hi my name is Angy and I have played the violin since I was 5 years old. I have autism and music has saved my life. When I was younger I used music as a coping mechanism when I got over stimulated. I started playing in orchestras outside of the school music program in 6th grade and that's when I realized I wanted music in my career. I also love performing my violin and sharing my love of music to others. I am currently a sophomore at the Crane School of Music and SUNY Potsdam majoring in Music Business and Arts Management and a concentration in Music Technology. It is because of music that I am still here today and I am forever grateful. Breaking The Third Wall Through Music's Mission statement: The mission of Breaking The Third Wall Through Music is to break the barriers between ableism and music, by bringing a wide range of musicians, regardless of disability, instrument, background, and field of interested across all genres to chat. This specific episode had Tyler Mazone, a composer and clarinetist to talk about his experiences as a deaf individual in the music field. His bio: " I never expected to be composing and playing music like I am today. I was born deaf. I grew up in love with science, video games and the usual nerdy things a typical boy at that age would be. I merely participated in General Music class. However, when I first chose my instruments in Fourth Grade I was attracted to the clarinet the most. This began my band career, and I was in for quite a journey. My deafness made it a huge challenge for me to learn how to play music. I struggled to learn how to practice and listen to myself play the clarinet, but I had several music teachers that helped me along the way. Hard work had to happen in order for me to get through it. The idea of much of my peers coming together to make music was just magical for me, and I kept coming back and working for more. I wanted to grow and get better to be able to enjoy the music even more. I started composing because I wanted to create the magical music that I heard in video game soundtracks but I eventually started learning how to compose for band by studying scores, and by listening in my band rehearsals. This enabled me to indulge myself in the music even more, and I enjoy it on a deeper level than I did before. Now a graduate of Guilderland High School, and a student at the Crane School of Music, I can surely say that I am still indulging and enjoying new kinds of music. My goal for my composition work is to be able to inspire others to listen and indulge just as I have been, and to tell my story in a medium that is not comprised of words. I have recently been involved with the 2019 Young Composer and Conductor Mentor Projects headed by composer Mark Camphouse and hosted by the US Air Force Band! Ben O’Brien Smith and Cody Rahn are the hosts and developers of a new content channel called Sounds Like A Drum. Both of these dudes have extensive experience in the music industry. Ben is a former employee of D’Addario for 6.5 years and during his time at D’Addario, Ben was in charge of the social networks of both Evans drum heads and Promark drumsticks. He also was involved with product development, which includes many of the innovations that we are all familiar with today from Evans including the UV1, Black Chrome, and Level 360 technology. It is also important to note that besides the multimedia end of the industry, Ben is also a drummer with over twenty years experience and also studied classical percussion at Crane School of Music. However, in the role of Sounds Like A Drum, Ben is primarily assuming the role of content creator, brand developer, and social media strategist through his company Cadence Independent Media. Due to Ben’s extensive knowledge of drumhead technology he also hosts some of the content that is focused on these subjects.

What Cody Rahn brings to the table is years of studio and live music performance experience where he has utilized his long-term obsession with tinkering with drums to find all of what they can offer him as a player. Cody presents incredibly informed methods in the Sounds Like A Drum YouTube series, and they tend to lean on more practical solutions, other than the whole "what you need to buy to get this to work" type of solution that finds its way into a lot of content usually. Together with Ben and Cody’s strengths, they have combined forces to create an incredibly insightful resource for the drumming community.

With podcasts, normally a host says that their episode is jammed packed with the good stuff. Almost every podcaster is really trying to convince you that you should listen to the show for a multitude of reasons. Whether it is because there is tons of information, or it is inspirational, or it was a natural conversation...you get the point. So it is difficult for me to write down exactly what this episode is without coming off as canned but believe me when I say this....actually let's back up just a second. If you listened to Episode 77 with Tim Buell you will have a good idea of how this episode with Ben & Cody went. It is again, kind of a textbook style episode. There are stories and it is fun and all that, but there are some things said in this episode that are basically giveaways to the audience and it is coming from Ben & Cody's long-term and professional experience. I was so happy with how easygoing, comfortable, professional, and value-packed this episode was.

You will learn about why the drum set's sound is so absolutely crucial. And it actually goes beyond just tuning methods, and drum head/drumstick, the drum kit, the cymbal selections, etc. Cody, in particular, gets into some detail about the sound of someone's playing. The sound is such an overall thing that is made up of many small components. The interpretations, the application of creativity, the execution of technique, the implication of time and feel, and of course every little piece of hardware, and of course the musical instruments that you selected to play. If a musician is thoughtful and caring about their sound and can also do everything else well that is required, you will be in good shape hopefully. So make sure you listen closely to this episode and take some mental notes.

This week on Contrabass Conversations we bring you an interview with string teacher and double bassist Peter Tambroni. Peter has written a book titled An Introduction to Double Bass Playing, and he has many valuable ideas regarding double bass pedagogy. Arizona bassist Robert Matheson is also featured on this episode. Enjoy! About Peter Peter began playing the double bass at the age of 16 (after playing the clarinet since elementary school) when the director of his high school jazz ensemble asked if anyone would be interested in playing bass. After playing electric bass it was suggested that he learn the string bass and soon after he began orchestral studies. Within a year, he knew he wanted to go into the field of music, and becoming a music teacher was the perfect choice for him. He received his Bachelor's of Music in Music Education from the Crane School of Music in 1996. After that he taught strings in the public schools for grades 4 - 12 in Northern New York and was adjunct faculty for 'cello and double bass at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.
