Our curator is Dr. Tricia Jenkins. Why did Tricia choose this theme? "I grew up in a doomsday apocalyptic cult and have noticed a rise in cult mentalities in U.S. society. Cults are also at the forefront of popular culture, as seen in shows like The Vow, Keep Sweet, and Scientology: The Aftermath.Podcasts that can help educate people about what defines a cult, how to talk to someone who is in one, and stories about people who have successfully gotten out are both fascinating and inspiring."This week's podcast and newsletter are sponsored by Vocaster from FocusriteVocaster is the easiest way to bring broadcast-quality sound to your podcast. We've seen Going Clear, "Scientology: The Aftermath", Wild, Wild Country, Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, and "The Vow", so we know a little something about cults. What we don't really understand is how they still exist, and pull in people today even with that awareness. Phoenix House is a therapeutic community based on a now-defunct cult, Synanon. Erin Coffin Moore was placed in Phoenix House when she was 16. "Tough Love" and institutionalizing "troubled" teens were touted as solutions for parents in the 1980s and 90s. Adults (teachers, police, social workers) fail to listen or believe kids when trouble at home is noticed, or to follow up on their welfare. Where there's smoke, there's fire. Phoenix House had contracts with state and local governments to serve as a diversion program for juvenile offenders and yet no authorities were keeping a close eye on the abuses there for children 13-17, co-ed, run by adults who were unqualified, unlicensed and untrained. From 2-minute showers to free labor, to encounter groups called "The Game" where berating a fellow "family member" was encouraged, as was ratting out others, including your family, abuse occurred daily. Ridicule was considered "a tool", and so was hostility. Civil rights violations were rampant (those in the adult facilities would sue to go back to prison where they would be treated better). The place where Paris Hilton  went was also based on Synanon. These places still exist. Groups like Landmark, NXIUM and Scientology all have similar playbooks. While there are benefits to the "self-improvement" aspects of these organization, the isolation, secrecy, shame, humiliation, abuse, excommunication and vengeance are as if they are from the same playbook. Even after turning 18, Erin was so indoctrinated from their abuse, she remained in the program, living outside of the facility but attending sessions regularly. Eventually, they isolated her from her mother, then excommunicated her after she became pregnant in a relationship with another member. Alone with nothing, Erin had to find her own way. It took her years to be able to talk about what she experienced there, and now she is chronicling her story on her blog, FallingPhoenix.com and writing her memoir. You can find Erin on Twitter @girl_recovery and Instagram @witchrecovery.Episode recorded on 10/24/20Episode released on 12/16/20For more information on the podcast or its host, please visit sassylittlepodcast.com. This week on Talk Sex With Dick, NYC Sex Therapist Dr. Richard Mills talks about his time in LA, a man who inquiries about sex with his wife after 44 years of marriage, and answers questions about feeling frustrated, divorce, Grindr, credit card debt, and dealing with an unexpected pregnancy. After taken a last minute trip to Los Angeles, Richard discusses how he’s come to understand the pandemic as a state of mind.  Hunkering down in Glendale, he finds himself at peace as he ventures to take in the Hollywood skyline while mentally preparing for his return to New York City and beginning the summer, and getting sucked into Leah Remini’s A&E television series Scientology & The Aftermath he finds himself flabbergasted by the light she shines on the abusive practices of the Church of Scientology. He tells the story of a phone call he received earlier in the week from one man in Michigan who inquired if it was safe to have sex with his wife of 40+ years, during the pandemic. He goes on to answer a series of questions from listers who wrote in.The first question comes from a listener in Manhattan who describes their frustrations with the pandemic.  They feel discouraged in their relationship and describe feeling disconnected and wonder if things will change when the pandemic is over.Another man from Ohio wrote in to express his feelings of devastation as he recently discovered his partner was sending naked pictures to other men on Grindr.  From his response, it’s clear he is overwhelmed and wonders if he can move past this violation of trust.  He’s saddened by his partners actions, that has caused him to wonder if his partner has stepped out.  The love he once felt feels far away, and deep down wonders what they should do next. The next listener from Washington describes their partner is in over their head $50,000 in credit card debt after receiving a call from a debt collector.   They are contemplating divorce, but unsure what steps to take next. Finally, the last listener from Minnesota recently found out she is pregnant after a one night stand and has decided not to have an abortion but is worried about what her family and church community will think once they find out.Music for today’s episode is brought to you by Chauncey Dandridge (AKA DJ Chauncey D) and Van Hechter  “53 Christopher Street” available on Spotify. If you have a burning question or would like to be a guest on the podcast Contact Us!

Here we go Tune into Cultish for the final part of the 2-part series on the critique of A&E’s show “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath”, where co-hosts Jeremiah Roberts and Jeff Durbin along with Cultish researcher Andrew Soncrant expose the twisted yoke that the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses place on their congregation. The three will challenge the “Blood Transfusion” and “Two-Witness Rule” polices which have left behind a tragic wake. It is through the “martyrdom” of children who refuse lifesaving treatment, to the Governing Body with a perversion of God’s Law are turning a blind eye to the sexual abuse, pedophilia, and molestation that plagues the organization that the Cultish trio will show how the sorrows of those who run after another god multiply. Jeff will then lead a discussion on the proper application of the general equity of God’s law and how it applies today, while sending hope in the Gospel to victims of sexual assault/rape and countless others who have been hurt by these policies, a hope rooted in Christ alone.

Joining them will be our Cultish researcher, Andrew Soncrant. From the September Six to Bill Reel, we go through a highlight reel of some of the more prominent excommunications by the Mormon church. The takeaway? If you speak out publicly against the leadership, even if the criticism is true, it’s only a matter of time before you’re on the chopping block. After that Braden tells us about the new Leah Remini series “Scientology: The Aftermath”. We wrap up with Patagonia taking climate change seriously and actually doing something about it.   Excommunication linkshttp://archive.sltrib.com/article.php?id=3791111&itype=CMSID http://archive.sltrib.com/article.php?id=2163720&itype=CMSID https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Kelly_(feminist) http://mormon-alliance.org/about.htm http://www.lds-mormon.com/whytemplechanges.shtml https://www.lds.org/ensign/1991/11/news-of-the-church/statement-on-symposia?lang=eng https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1989/04/alternate-voices?lang=eng https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunstone_(magazine) https://www.nytimes.com/1993/09/19/us/mormons-penalize-dissident-members.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKjASwbutsE https://www.deseretnews.com/article/476161/SCHOLAR-REBAPTIZED-INTO-LDS-CHURCH.html http://archive.sltrib.com/article.php?id=58060420&itype=CMSID https://www.ldsfreedomforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=35648 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_Alliance http://signaturebookslibrary.org/840/   Light of Gazalem https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-11-28/patagonia-donates-10-million-trump-tax-savings-to-green-groups?srnd=premium   Show links: Website http://www.glassboxpodcast.com/index.html Find us on Facebook and Twitter @Glass Box Podcast

This week, Cari and Kelsae discuss Leah Remini’s show Scientology: The Aftermath and why y’all should go watch it. They’ll get to the temple (they promise), but it just wasn’t happening this week. But seriously, go watch some cult documentaries. Scientology may be a scarier, more aggressive cult, but watching the experiences of Scientologists has helped Sisters Cari and Kelsae put their own experiences into context. (And yes, if you’ve done the math, Cari was 10 in 1998, not eight, and yes, Cari is a real life math tutor. In the words of Nina Bonina Brown, “Sue me.”) For full show notes and links, go to: https://www.nomanknowsmyherstory.com/episodes/055

Mary Kahn as seen on Leah Remini's Scientology: The AfterMath, Mary talks about how the bridge up only went down hill. In this first part of our conversation Mary describes early auditing, thinking for herself and the indoctrination of her son Sammy. Mary is honest, well spoken and makes no bones about what has happened to her and her family. Also, Danny Masterson of That 70's Show, has been accused of rape by 3 women. I'll summarize all the details available and give MY opinion on the entire issue from rape to Scientology enabling and LAPD conduct. I'm not happy with what I'm seeing and I'll tell all about when I address "Sir Rapes A Lot" (allegedly) or as he more proudly has gone by in the past "DJ Donkey Punch" entire story. What does Mary Kahn think of Dianetics? Were good people doing bad things because it justified the means? Will the nic name "Sir Rapes A Lot" go viral? Does the entire world really revolve around Leah Remini ratings? Find out the answer to these questions and much more on this edition of Come Get Sum!!!

Is Tom Cruise moving to Scientology headquarters in Clearwater, Florida?  In 1971 Paulette Cooper wrote a scathing book about the Church of Scientology. Desperate to shut the book down, Scientology unleashed on her one of the most sinister personal campaigns the free world has ever known. The onslaught, which lasted years, ruined her life, and drove her to the brink of suicide. The story of Paulette’s terrifying ordeal is told in full for the first time in The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, published by Silvertail Books. It reveals the shocking details of the darkest chapter in Scientology’s checkered history, which ended with senior members in prison, and the organization’s reputation permanently damaged. She still loves her children and wants them in her life. She wrote letters to them expressing this.
