A Shannon property rumoured to be in the process of becoming a direct provision centre will be student accommodation. Formerly the Shannon Development building, Phoenix House housed roughly 70 Ukrainian refugees until June 2024 when the Department of Integration ended its contract with the owner over "issues raised during a site visit". Three weeks after the Department told Clare FM it wasn't considering the building for International Protection Applicant accommodation, Shannon Sinn Féin TD Donna McGettigan has been informed that it will be student accommodation from September of this year. Deputy McGettigan has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons when it comes to vacant buildings rumoured to be IPAS accommodation, communication is key.
The Department of Integration has been accused of causing severe upset and distress for more families in Shannon. Its after Ukrainian refugees living at the Oakwood Hotel in the town, received notice that the providers contract had been terminated and they will be relocated by July 26th. It comes just three weeks after 76 Ukrainians living in Phoenix House in Shannon were removed from their accommodation. Shannon Sinn Féin Councillor Donna McGettigan says IPAS needs to put a plan in place immediately to secure jobs and school places for discommoded families.
Last Friday we were joined by Mags Cotter, Community Spokesperson for Kilbaha, who told us about Ukrainian refugees in their community receiving relocation notices. This followed a similar situation in Shannon, where Ukrainian refugees who were living in Phoenix House in the Shannon Town Centre received a relocation notice, with the majority of them having now been moved to Lisdoonvarna. The shocked local community responded by calling an Emergency Meeting in Halla Eoin, Kilbaha last Friday. To get an update on where things currently stand, Alan Morrissey was joined once again by Mags Cotter, the nominated community spokesperson.
On Thursday's show we spoke about the situation affecting the Ukrainian refugees who were living in Phoenix House in the Shannon Town Centre, but who now have been relocated to Lisdoonvarna. A similar issue has cropped up in the Loop Head Peninsula, where Ukrainian refugees living in the local community have been issued with a relocation notice. The shocked local community have responded by calling an Emergency Meeting to take place in Halla Eoin, Kilbaha this evening. To explain this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Mags Cotter, the Nominated Community Spokesperson.
On Morning Focus and Clare FM News we have been keeping you updated every step of the way on the situation affecting the Ukrainian refugees who were living in Phoenix House in the Shannon Town Centre, but who now have been relocated to Lisdoonvarna. Efforts are being made to relocate the Ukrainians back to Shannon and, to that end, Joanne has sent a letter to the Minister for Integration, Roderic O'Gorman. To find out more Alan Morrissey was joined by Joanne Begley from the Shannon Community Integration Forum, Siobhán Boyd, a Shannon resident and Clare Regional Integration Community Forum member and Donna McGettigan, Sinn Fein Councillor, Shannon MD.
The founding head of School at Phoenix House in Japan, Claire Fletcher, joins the podcast to share her insights on working in several brand new schools in the international sector and the ups and downs this brings. From the reality of arriving at a school still being built to why she believes you have to interview teachers for new schools in person to sense if it's really for them, she reveals why life as a founding school is 'not for the faint-hearted' - but is also incredibly rewarding. She also offers advice on staying calm when everything around you is brand new and answers are sometimes in short supply - and why this makes recruitment a vital component of setting up a new school.
A Government minister claims the majority of Ukrainian refugees being moved from Shannon next week will find accommodation in this county. It's now four days until Ukrainians living in Shannon's Phoenix House are due to be relocated to Lisdoonvarna, after the Government claimed the contract with the provider had been terminated "as part of the Government's policy of reducing its accommodation portfolio". A petition to keep the emergency accommodation centre open has been signed by over 500 people in Shannon including employers, teachers and trade union representatives. Responding to Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe in the Dáil, Minister of State at the Department of Integration Joe O'Brien while it can't ignore the negative impact the move will have on the refugees, the compliance issues at the facility must be acknowledged.
A North Clare senator is calling on the Integration Minister to provide a sustainable long-term plan for Ukrainian accommodation. It comes as 75 Ukrainian refugees living in Shannon's Phoenix House have been told they'll be relocated to Lisdoonvarna next Monday unless they find their own accommodation in the meantime. There are 5,581 Ukrainians benefitting from temporary accommodation in Clare at the moment - 2,992 of which are located in 39 multi-occupancy facilities throughout the county. Speaking in the Seanad, Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway says the Government must move away from an emergency response and look to the future.
75 Ukrainian refugees living in Phoenix House in the Shannon Town Centre will be relocated to Lisdoonvarna later this month. The residents were informed of this decision in a letter issued to them last Monday and unless they find housing in the intervening period, 60 will be placed in the Imperial Hotel while the remaining 15 will go into the Burren Castle Hotel next Monday June 24th. In a statement to Clare FM, the Department of Integration claims the decision is "part of the Government's policy of reducing its accommodation portfolio", and those fleeing the war in Ukraine who are availing of emergency accommodation are "regularly encouraged to make their own independent arrangements for accommodation". Clare FM's Seán Lyons visited the residents of Phoenix House to see how the decision will affect them, and started by speaking to Tetyana who is a single mother living in the complex.
The Taoiseach has vowed to the raise the matter of Shannon-based refugees being moved to North Clare with the Integration Minister. Ukrainians living in Phoenix House in Shannon Town Centre were issued with a letter from International Protection Accommodation Services on Monday stating they'll be relocated to Lisdoonvarna on June 24th. The decision has been met with anger and upset from many of those living in Phoenix House who've found work and enrolled their children in schools in the industrial town. Responding to Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe in the Dáil, Taoiseach Simon Harris claims the move is part of an effort to reduce the State emergency accommodation bill.
There is currently a dilemma facing Ukrainian refugees in Shannon. The Taoiseach has vowed to raise the matter of Shannon-based refugees being moved to North Clare with the Integration Minister. Ukrainians living in Phoenix House in Shannon Town Centre were issued with a letter from International Protection Accommodation Services on Monday, stating they'll be relocated to Lisdoonvarna on June 24th. The decision has been met with anger and upset from many of those living in Phoenix House who've found work and enrolled their children in schools in the industrial town. To find out more, Alan Morrissey was joined by Sinn Féin Councillor, Donna McGettigan from Shannon and Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy from Lisdoonvarna.

It looks like the pandemic is in our rearview mirror, but there's another pandemic, and that's a pandemic of addiction. Drew Dutton is the President & CEO of Phoenix House Texas. He's been with Phoenix House since 2013 and has spent his career helping others through counseling. Forbes Magazine said they are “one of four technologies innovating mental health” and Elle Magazine was quoted saying they “couldn't stop talking about their good mood and hyper charged focus.” They've been proven in multiple published studies, treated over 10,000 patients and are prescribed by more than 14,000 doctors and providers. Watch this interview on YouTube here https://youtu.be/OfCeq6z2mks On today's Episode #271 we will cover ✔ A reminder of our first interview with Kelly Roman, CEO of Fisher Wallace Laboratories from 2021, that remains on our TOP 12 most watched YouTube Interviews on the podcast. ✔ My Personal Review of The Fisher Wallace Device, that remains our MOST downloaded episode of ALL-TIME! ✔ Our One Year Later Episode, where I answer the MOST ASKED QUESTION about our podcast. ✔ Kelly Roman updates us on The Next Generation of Wearable Devices: Where They are Now, and Where They are Going. ✔ We discuss Best Practices for Using Their First Generation Device, and HOW it provides a calming effect. ✔ The Importance of Staying on Top of Our Mental and Physical Health. ✔ How Fisher Wallace is Positioned to Support the Workplaces of the Future. ✔ First responder study, and ways that we can support Kelly's mission of building health, well-being and resilience in the future. You can see countless reviews on their website[i] where people all over the globe share the relief the device provides for them, and I personally understand the impact that this specific technology can have on our mental and physical health. Our first interview with today's returning guest, Kelly Roman[ii], CEO of Fisher Wallace Laboratories[iii], on their wearable medical device that's cleared by the FDA to treat depression, anxiety and insomnia, came in at #11 of our all-time most watched YouTube interviews[iv]. Then, EPISODE #120[v] from last April 2021, where I posted “My Personal Review of the Fisher Wallace Wearable Medical Device”[i] remains our most listened to episode of all time with over 6,000 downloads. You can watch our first interview here https://youtu.be/jCtbngfXoYg that Kelly Roman says is his all-time favorite interview. I think it's neat to look back now, to when I had no idea that a device like this even existed, to see how it improved my sleep by much more the gold standard of 20 minutes each night. I'm sure as the CEO of this company, Kelly has heard it all. I remember having a deer in the headlights look while first learning about this device, as I didn't even know there was something I could use at home that could help me to improve my sleep, levels of anxiety, that also supports those people suffering from depression. I'm pretty open on this podcast that depression runs in my family, and is one of the reasons I left Toronto, for AZ where I could find most days where we have sunshine, and I could exercise outside Year-round. This change of location has helped me to find the balance I needed, but not everyone can just pick up and move to a new location for a better climate. Kelly Roman himself was open with his past history with depression, and how the device has helped him as well, so after I released our interview, and then my review of the device, I was surprised at how many emails and correspondence I received from people around the world, with questions. I think most people just wanted to make sure I was a real person, and if you've ever emailed me, I answer EVERY email within 24 hours. Most people wanted to know “do you still use the Fisher Wallace Device?” and the answer is “yes, every morning, as a part of my daily routine.” I couldn't imagine life without it. In fact, I've had this question come through so many times that I did a “Review One Year Later: My Personal Review of the Fisher Wallace Device[vi]” last summer, that I could point people to who asked me this question to. I've said it often on this podcast that most of us will struggle with a mental health issue in our lifetime. We launched the year with EP 268 on “Prioritizing Our Mental Health in 2023: Building Self-Awareness and Resilience in the New Year”[vii] with a quote from Julie Smith, the author of Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before, reminding us that our mental health is just an important as our physical health. So, when I saw an email from Kelly Roman about a NEW product they were releasing, I immediately emailed him to see if he would come back on the podcast. Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast where we bridge the gap between theory and practice, with strategies, tools and ideas we can all use immediately, applied to the most current brain research to heighten productivity in our schools, sports environments and modern workplaces. For returning guest, welcome back, and for those who are new listeners, I'm Andrea Samadi and launched this podcast almost 4 years ago, to share how important an understanding of our brain is for our everyday life and results. This season (Season 9) we will be focused on Neuroscience: Going Back to the Basics always with a focus on our productivity, results, mental and physical health. Today, I want to welcome back the CEO of Fisher Wallace, Kelly Roman, to reconnect since our first interview that received more feedback and comments than I imagined, helping all those who have tuned into that first interview, my personal review, or the one year later review. Let's welcome Kelly Roman and see what's been happening over at Fisher Wallace since our first interview back in February 2021. Welcome back Kelly, thanks for meeting me today in this early time slot and being so responsive for us speaking again. How's everything going over there? Q1: Kelly, I've got to say, I was really surprised with the reaction and interest with our first interview. It caught me off guard just how many people around the world are suffering, and looking for a solution. People were very open with how much they are struggling, and asked me how I used the device. What does this reaction mean to you and how have you seen the world responding to this device? Q2: When I go back to my trial period, I was using the device to improve my WASO scores, as I've been trying everything to make sure I go to sleep and stay asleep so was happy to see those improve, but was not expecting my mood to improve, or anxiety levels decrease. Even after using some other tools this past year, there are many times I could see anxiety levels increase, without me even being aware of it. What have you seen as a typical reaction for someone who tries out the device? Q2B: Does it matter which level you choose? Q3: I loved the correspondence that came through after the personal review I did. I think most people wanted to know that I'm a real person here, and the biggest thing I noticed was when I said I was not paid to endorse your product. When I go to your website review section, and see wonderful reviews, including the one I did, is everyone there just like me? They tried the device, found it helped them, and they either let you know, or they just keep it, and use it regularly? Q4: In our interview, I remember you were waiting on the device to be cleared by FDA for insomnia (and I think it has been by now from looking at your website). What has happened since we spoke that first time? Q5: In our first interview we spoke about some work you were doing with first responders. What are you doing now with the first responders study, in order to validate tools and techniques to improve their quality of life in a profession that needs it more than ever today? (NOTE- I shadowed a team of police officers this year, and after 5 hours on the job, needed to take a break from what I saw. I wouldn't make it in that industry, and saw first-hand how many officers needed mental health support tools to help them to deal with the stress they must endure, minute by minute). What can you share about this device helping those first responders with the stress they dealt with day to day? Q6: I was sorry to see the email about the passing of Mitch Rosenthal, MD, the founder of Phoenix House, the largest private, non-profit therapeutic drug-treatment program in the United States. I remember you mentioned him in our first interview when I asked about the research behind the device with substance use disorder. How did Dr. Rosenthal contribute to the world as an “early apostle for treating drug and alcohol addiction?”[viii] Q7: The reason I asked you back today was because I hear there's a lot going on with Fisher Wallace. What's Your Vision for the Future? What's next for Fisher Wallace? Where are you going now? What can you tell us about OAK, and the Next Generation of Fisher Wallace Technology? Thank you, Kelly, for coming back on the podcast, and for all you are doing in the world. I'm always going to be a fan of any tool that supports our mental health and well-being and I'll continue to follow your work and showcase everything you are doing there on the podcast, in addition to continue to use my device on a daily basis. For anyone who listens and wants to try this wearable device, is the best way to go to FisherWallace.com and order one to try? Thank you for all you do. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 19.7 million American adults (anyone over the age of 12) was battling a substance use disorder in 2017. Imagine how that statistic has changed in the years since, especially as we've navigated our lives through massive transformation and change. If your organization has any number of people working within it, there's a high likelihood someone is struggling with addiction. Some may be highly functioning, some may be getting the help they need and others may be staying silent in shame, unsure of the steps to take next. Addiction doesn't discriminate and as humans, we need all the compassion and support we can offer each other, especially in our greatest times of need. This week on the podcast, Joe Gardzina of Brazos Place and Adapt Programs in Texas is sharing how to avoid stigmatizing language when talking about addiction, how to be a supportive organization, and why we should lean on treatment and support rather than rigid consequences for those struggling with substance use.Conversations are important, as is appropriate treatment and trauma-informed care. This episode is as real as it gets and is an important one for anyone who leads people, whether you suspect substance use or not. The conversation is compassionate, intelligent and practical - love to hear what you think.About Joe Gardzina:Joe began his career in 1993 as a psychiatric technician at a Houston aftercare facility. Mr. Gardzina became an LCDC in 1996. Joe is Board Certified by the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals. In addition, he is certified as both an Anger Resolution Counselor and US DOT Substance Abuse Professional. He has served as the program director for substance abuse treatment facilities in Houston, TX, and San Diego, CA.Before founding ADAPT Programs in 2007, Joe worked for the Right Step in Houston as the Program Coordinator of their inpatient adolescent treatment program. He also was the Director of Programs for Phoenix House in San Diego, CA. In addition, he worked for the United Way for five years, serving as the Associate Executive Director. Joe and his beautiful wife Victoria are the proud parents of one child, William.Mentioned in This Episode of Mental Health in Minutes:Follow Brazos Place on FacebookFollow ADAPT Programs on FacebookJoin the monthly digital subscription

Merry Met virtual traveller! It's here! It's finally here! Season 3 has arrived and the podcast has had a bit of a makeover. I really hope you will like the new format which includes me taking you on a ramble, singing and of course lots of folklore and a story. For this episode patrons chose, 'Beneath The Snowy Thorn' and so I'm taking you on a tour of my local hedgerows, singing the ballad of Thomas De Rhymer, talking about the folklore of the flora and fauna of UK hedgerows and telling the story of Yallery Brown. On occasion there are dark folkloric characters explored in this podcast and so, as always, I would recommend that you should listen through first before listening with younger members of your household. RMA-Episode 59 Show Notes: This week on RMA-The Last Stop: When a good kid goes down the wrong path, parents are left feeling hopeless. What do they do when their kid starts doing drugs and drinking and getting into trouble with the law? I'll tell you what they shouldn't do. Don't have a transport company pull them out of bed in the middle of the night and send them to a place like the Elan School. The Elan School, located in the deep woods of Maine was presented to their parents as a last stop resort for out-of-control behaviour. It used a mixture of harsh discipline, emotional, and physical abuse, to deconstruct the students' psyches and “cure” them of their behavioral issues. The Last Stop, an award-winning documentary film currently streaming on Amazon Prime, takes a deeper look into the controversial therapy methods used at this school, methods that developed from the Synanon recovery cult. Synanon spawned hundreds of copycat programs like Daytop and Phoenix House, that used confrontational therapy and other abusive tactics with no scientific basis to treat teens with substance abuse and behavioral issues. Erin Moore joins Mike and Nat this week to share her experience as a survivor of the Phoenix House program, and to join in reviewing The Last Stop. It's a compelling episode that strikes at the heart of the “troubled teen” movement and asks why there has been little to no oversight of these largely unregulated facilities. Plus, the week in review and the usual hijinks on an out-of-control, questionably therapeutic, deep in the woods episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages. Addiction is a treatable disease, but how can people differential between quality care and fraud? Dr. Rosenthal dispels the truth on quality treatment. Mitchell S. Rosenthal, MD Mitchell S. Rosenthal, M.D., the founder of Phoenix House, one of the nation's leading non-profit substance abuse treatment organizations, is president of the Rosenthal Center for Addiction Studies. The Center plays an increasingly significant role in the treatment field, providing a valuable platform for advocacy and the formulation of public policy. Its surveys, investigations, publications, and substantial presence on the Internet provides critical information on substance abuse issues to policymakers, healthcare professionals as well as families and individuals coping with addiction. Dr. Rosenthal has served as a White House advisor on drug abuse, a special consultant to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, chairman of the New York State Advisory Council on Drug Abuse, and president of the American Association of Psychoanalytic Physicians. He is a lecturer in psychiatry at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Rosenthal is a psychiatrist whose research, clinical skills, and advocacy have produced model treatment protocols, widely replicated throughout the country and abroad. His pioneering efforts in substance abuse treatment date from his work at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California (1965-1967), where he formed the first service-sponsored therapeutic community for the treatment of addiction. As deputy commissioner of New York City's Addiction Services Agency, he created the Phoenix House citywide network of treatment facilities in 1967. In 1972, he resigned his city post to become president of the now independent Phoenix House Foundation and oversee the national expansion of its treatment and prevention services over the following three and a half decades. Dr. Rosenthal earned his B.A. from Lafayette College and his M.D. from the State University of New York's Downstate Medical Center. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, deputy chair of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, and serves on the board of the Partnership for Drug Free Kids and Delancey Street Foundation.

Welcome to this week's episode with the authors of the book "Our Happy Divorce" Nikki Debartolo and Benjamin Heldfond. After speaking with Nikki and Ben, I have learned that there is a better way to co-parent. We talked about how to co-parent during the Coronavirus. You might be shocked at how Nikki and Ben stepped up to blend their family with having each other's spouses and kids under one roof. They even live Seven houses from each other. While we were talking, I mentioned to Nikki and Ben about Erika Englund from episode 160 and how she and her family came up with celebrating after her divorce the day she got married to her now-former husband. Erika created "Familyversary." Nikki talked about how her husband Chad came to their son Asher to get permission to ask his mom to marry him. Bios: Nikki DeBartolo understands the impact of a loving family and how it creates a solid foundation for the future for a person navigating through life, love, marriage, and motherhood. As Co-Founder of Our Happy Divorce, a service that offers guidance on creating a post-divorce happy, modern family and Author of "Our Happy Divorce - How Ending Our Marriage Brought Us Together, DeBartolo has made it her mission to help families in every way possible. She is proud of the accomplishments that the DeBartolo Family Foundation has been able to share with nonprofits and enjoys when those moments come to life, making the Tampa Bay community – where she lives with her husband, Chad, son, Asher, and their two dogs – feel more like a family. Ben Heldfond understands the detriment divorce can cause in the lives of children, as his parents’ divorce instilled a deep commitment to doing better for his children one day. As Co-Founder of Our Happy Divorce, a service that offers guidance on creating a post-divorce happy, modern family and Author of "Our Happy Divorce - How Ending Our Marriage Brought Us Together,” Heldfond has made it his mission to help families during the turmoil of divorce can become. A Sassy Little Podcast for Getting Over It with Sandra Ann Miller
We've seen Going Clear, "Scientology: The Aftermath", Wild, Wild Country, Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, and "The Vow", so we know a little something about cults. What we don't really understand is how they still exist, and pull in people today even with that awareness. Phoenix House is a therapeutic community based on a now-defunct cult, Synanon. Erin Coffin Moore was placed in Phoenix House when she was 16. "Tough Love" and institutionalizing "troubled" teens were touted as solutions for parents in the 1980s and 90s. Adults (teachers, police, social workers) fail to listen or believe kids when trouble at home is noticed, or to follow up on their welfare. Where there's smoke, there's fire. Phoenix House had contracts with state and local governments to serve as a diversion program for juvenile offenders and yet no authorities were keeping a close eye on the abuses there for children 13-17, co-ed, run by adults who were unqualified, unlicensed and untrained. From 2-minute showers to free labor, to encounter groups called "The Game" where berating a fellow "family member" was encouraged, as was ratting out others, including your family, abuse occurred daily. Ridicule was considered "a tool", and so was hostility. Civil rights violations were rampant (those in the adult facilities would sue to go back to prison where they would be treated better). The place where Paris Hilton went was also based on Synanon. These places still exist. Groups like Landmark, NXIUM and Scientology all have similar playbooks. While there are benefits to the "self-improvement" aspects of these organization, the isolation, secrecy, shame, humiliation, abuse, excommunication and vengeance are as if they are from the same playbook. Even after turning 18, Erin was so indoctrinated from their abuse, she remained in the program, living outside of the facility but attending sessions regularly. Eventually, they isolated her from her mother, then excommunicated her after she became pregnant in a relationship with another member. Alone with nothing, Erin had to find her own way. It took her years to be able to talk about what she experienced there, and now she is chronicling her story on her blog, FallingPhoenix.com and writing her memoir. You can find Erin on Twitter @girl_recovery and Instagram @witchrecovery.Episode recorded on 10/24/20Episode released on 12/16/20For more information on the podcast or its host, please visit sassylittlepodcast.com. United States Of America - You Can Never Come Down (Demo) (1968) This song was officially released on Joe Byrd's next, slightly inferior band's (Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies) first and only album, American Metaphysical Circus. But this version isn't much better. Marijuana (Anti-drug propaganda film with Sonny Bono) (Part 1 of 4) (1968) Marijuana is a 34-minute 1968 anti-drug documentary film by Max Miller and distributed by Avanti Films. It is narrated by Sonny Bono. It was described as "the first major film effort to center upon the use and possible risks of marijuana", in which "arguments for and against its use are presented and the accumulation of arguments against is allowed to speak for itself". Music for the documentary was composed by The Byrds' Gene Clark, a "bizarre" choice in his musical career, resulting in "meandering blues and pseudo-psychedelic instrumental jams". Boy, I don't like Sonny Bono. Ambrose Slade - Journey To The Centre Of Your Mind (1969) Curious Alice (1971) Written by David Dixon, who co-wrote "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" for Peter, Paul, and Mary. Gabor Szabo and the California Dreamers - White Rabbit (1967) Carol Kaye on bass. There's lots of Gabor Szabo's crazy music in the ol' DSOO canon. Some day I will feature it all. Index - Eight Miles High (1968) Kings Road - Casey Jones (1973) Pickwick Records cover band with unknown singers and performers under the marketing moniker = "Played And Sung Like The Original Hits". Really terrible. It sounds like I sound when I'm making fun of something. This version makes it seem even LONGER than the original. I love the fake crowd noise and the band actually THANKING that fake crowd. Who would do that? Heh... Surprise Sisters - Got To Get You Into My Life (1976) If artists are oblivious to a song's drug context, does that mean it's not a drug song? The Suprise Sisters release 2 singles in Australia as the Cliffmores before relocating to the UK and changing their name. One-album English - Australian soul-pop - rhythm 'n' blues quartet of sisters. David Bowie [Ed: that solves the drug context conundrum.] saw them performing at the Marquee Club in London and introduced them to Tony Visconti who produced their sole album. As disco goes, pretty tepid regardless. The Great Society - White Rabbit (Live) (1966) Grace Slick's band before Jefferson Airplane. She was a model before becoming a singer. You can tell at this point she is a singer, but lacking in some confidence. Perhaps having sex with Paul Kantner gave her that shot in the arm. The Mops - White Rabbit (1967) From Japan. You should read about The Mops. The Soft Boys - Cold Turkey (1979) Vocalist Robyn Hitchcock went on to considerable solo success. The Stranglers - Golden Brown (1981)Their big achievement. They went from style to style, but there is something about them when they pull it back. Who the fuck cares what I think? Here we have two distinctly different takes on heroin. I'll stick with pontificating ignorantly about pot, thank you. Johnny Price - Marijuana, The Devil Flower (1971) The Terrible Truth (1951) From IMDB: A Juvenile Court judge is at a loss to understand why so many of America's youths are marijuana addicts, so he decides to investigate on his own. He visits Phyllis, a high school senior and former heroin junkie, who tells him about the horrible effects heroin has had on her. She managed to overcome her addiction to marijuana and heroin, but in the process ruined her hair. This leads the judge to the logical conclusion that the drug problem in the U.S. was introduced by the godless Soviet Communists in an effort to "undermine morale" and that the way to stop the drug epidemic was to "use common sense" (an earlier version, apparently, of the Reagan-era "Just Say No!" campaign, and which had pretty much the same effect--i.e., none). Gene Marshall - Smoke It, The Pot (197?) United States of America - The Garden Of Earthly Delights (1968) Neil Diamond - The Pot Smoker's Song (1968) From Dangerous Minds: Neil Diamond’s visits to an NYC rehab called Phoenix House inspired him to start an anti-drug group called Musicians Against Drugs (MAD). The organization soon changed its name to Performers Against Drugs (PAD)... During the verses, actual junkies from Phoenix House talk about how grass made drug fiends of them and ruined their lives, accompanied by merry instrumentation and backing vocals. Janko Nilovic - Drug Song (1975) Pepper/Tanner - The Druggist (196?) Pepper Sound Studios, then Pepper-Tanner, still later as The William B. Tanner Company, and for a few years after 1984, Media General. Its jingles ran the gamut from silly to spectacular, depending on the era, the composers, and whether the jingles were recorded in Memphis or Dallas. A radio station in a small or medium market would agree to air hundreds of commercials for D-Con or one of Pepper’s other advertising clients over the course of a year, in exchange for which the station would receive a customized jingle package. Some of Pepper’s production libraries were also distributed in this manner. You can write your own voice-over script for your favorite druggist and make your own commercial! DO IT. You fucking want to. Talking Heads - Drugs (1979) The Mighty Diamonds - Pass The Kouchie (1982) How do you feel when you got no herb? Harlem Underground Band - Smokin Cheeba Cheeba (1976) Featuring George Benson, whose first album came out in 1964, and went on to record "Let Me Love You One More Time". Lawrence Welk - One Toke Over The Line (1971) Simon & Garfunkel - Patterns (1966) The Tokens - Green Plant (1967) Same band that released "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". Ultimate Spinach - Mind Flowers (1968) Neil Young - Roll Another Number (For the Road) (1975) Jeannie C. Riley - One Toke Over The Line (1972) Sweet fucking god, did no one in 1972 know what a "toke" was? Another album that was never released on CD. I love them.

Today in the Portage Health Foundation Addiction Series we're looking optimistically at what our community can be, and is, doing to combat the effects of addiction in the Copper Country. You'll hear many voices in today's episode, starting with Rebecca Crane from Dial Help, then Bernadette Yeoman-Ouellette and Kevin Store from Portage Health Foundation, former addict Nikki Collins, Houghton police chief John Donnelly, Mark Maggio from the Phoenix House and eventually Dr. Adam Frimodig from UP Health System. The search for answers is still on, but this insight provides a vision into the future of how addiction is being addressed in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. See full show notes and listen to the entire series at phfgive.org/addiction.
The range of effects addiction can have on a person are drastic, and often are deeper than those who are trying to help someone through addiction can ever realize. On this episode we'll hear from Mark Maggio with the Phoenix House, Rebecca Crane from Dial Help and Dr. Adam Frimodig from UP Health System. The three of them will dive into the many negative health consequences addiction can have. Highlights from Episode 8 Mark Maggio, Phoenix House “It definitely has a negative consequence to the person's overall health.” “Nutritional issues, deficiencies in vitamins and minerals.” “Substance effect on the physical body, heart issues, list goes on and on." “significant impact on general health issues.” Rebecca Crane, Dial Help “On a personal level, it erodes every aspect of a person's health.” “The chidlren in the home are at risk from abuse and neglect, but about half the time it's because the parents are using.” “It seems to find its path into ever service division we have and have had.” Dr. Adam Frimodig, UP Health System “Drastically wide range of effects.” “Significant emotional changes, whether it's anxiety, depression or even bipolar be induced.” “There's a phenomenon known as opioid-induced hyperalgesia, which basically means the more pain medication you take, the more pain you have.” Looking Ahead The significant impact of addiction can absolutely erode every aspect of a person's health, but it doesn't have to be that way. Today we heard from Mark Maggio, Rebecca Crane and Dr. Adam Frimodig, and in episode nine all of three of them will be back, along with four other leaders in our community to talk about the solution to our community's addiction problem. Having grown up as a member of the iconic San Francisco 49ers football family, the values she learned on the field from a young age, have helped shape who she is today. As Executive Vice President of DeBartolo Holdings and the DeBartolo Family Foundation, Nikki has made it her mission to give back to her community in every way possible, from supporting local grassroots movements to national charities, she has been part of multiple initiatives, giving back to her community, including, Metropolitan Ministries, Meal on Wheels, The Boys and Girls Club, The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, and the HCSO Freddie Solomon Christmas Event. As Co-Founder of Our Happy Divorce, a service that offers guidance on creating a post-divorce happy, modern family and Author of "Our Happy Divorce - How Ending Our Marriage Brought Us Together,” Heldfond has made it his mission to help families during the turmoil divorce can become. His corporate career began more than three decades ago during his real estate career, where he played an integral part in the company’s development acquisitions and diversified investing transactions. Through two episodes of Portage Health Foundation's Addiction Series we've learned how serious of an issue addiction is in our community and how the brain controls so much of this issue. In episode three, we'll dive into why we as a community need to be more understanding and supportive of those suffering from addiction. We'll hear from Rebecca Crane with Dial Help, the Portage Health Foundation's Bernadette Yeoman-Ouellette and Kevin Store, Mark Maggio from the Phoenix House and finish with a plea for support from former addict Nikki Collins. Highlights from Episode 3 Rebecca Crane, Executive Director at Dial Help * “People a lot of times think it's a moral issue or it's a matter of willpower, and they don't really understand how addiction gets rooted to begin with and how it's self perpetuating.” * “To me it's sort of like saying to someone with diabetes or cancer, if you just had enough willpower you would just get over this not realizing that for a lot of people it gets to a point where they absolutely have to have help.” * “Treatment is available.” Kevin Store, Executive Director Portage Health Foundation * “The face of addiction has dramatically shifted. As a community one of the first things we can do to be part of the solution is to recognize that that is the case.” Mark Maggio, Executive Director of Phoenix House * “In practice addiction is often still viewed as a choice.” * “It's hard to get passed …it creates a fear and anger. But the reality is understanding the addiction for what it is and understanding the physiology of the brain functioning and how it shuts down those rational parts of the brain.” Nikki Collins, a former addict and current business owner * “We have a substantial amount of amazing people who have recovered.” Looking Ahead Addiction is not a choice. If you take nothing else away from this series, we hope you remember to show as much compassion as possible to those who are suffering from it. Your support for them could be life saving. In our next episode we'll hear about law enforcement's role in addiction. Welcome back to the Portage Health Foundation's Addiction Series. In the first episode we heard about how addiction is a serious issue in our community. In this episode we're going to hear from Nikki Collins on what it was like to be addicted. We will then meet Mark Maggio, the executive director of Phoenix House, which provides residential services for males here in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, while also providing outpatient services to people throughout the Western U.P. We'll finish today with UP Health System physician Dr. Adam Frimodig who dives into the science of addiction. Dr. Frimodig explains why and how addiction is a disease, and why we need to start treating it as such. Highlights from Episode 2 Nikki Collins, a former addict and current business owner “Addiction is like dancing with the devil.” “Addiction is when you no longer have any control.” Mark Maggio, Executive Director of Phoenix House “No one that I know that is an alcoholic or a drug addict set out to become an alcoholic or a drug addict. It's something that happened along the way, and once you're caught in it, it's a horrible place to be. It's a very difficult illness to get out of. Especially on your own.” Dr. Adam Frimodig, UP Health System “Brains actually function differently” “We know the brain has a big part of this, so even when people want to stop they may not be able to stop at that point.” “It's not always safe to just stop by yourself.” “It's not because they're bad people … it's because their mind and their body is saying you need this to survive. When that switch is on, it's a losing battle. Almost no one can fight that.” “Addiction is like dancing with the devil,” is a line we hope you remember the next time you think about someone with addiction. It's a dangerous disease that can be fatal. Thank you to Nikki for sharing her personal experience, and to Mark and Dr. Frimodig for sharing their expertise. Looking Ahead In the next episode we'll dive into the stigma of addiction, and why we as a community need to move past that. BILL MCDONALDBill, a Michigan native, grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and caught the “business spirit” early in life. He now runs his own company, Phoenix House, which specializes in manufacturing single family homes in off-site construction. Bill’s love for construction was developed at an early age and he credits his family and his european heritage. Bill is passionate about creating high performance homes including creating passive houses that are energy smart and responsible. He believes passive houses paired with off-site construction is a nice partnership and sees many current building trends heading in this direction. International relationships have been critical to Bill’s success and he encourages us to use communication and looking at relationships from a long-term perspective as Social Capital building blocks. “If there is a will, there is a way!” is a phrase that he heard many times growing up and he reminds us that we must exercise strength and will to stick with an idea/inspiration for the long run - there must be “stick-to-it-ness” to achieve our dreams. Bill was invited to speak at TedxDetroit where he gave an insightful presentation focusing on the performance and off-site nature of building being like the adoption of technology in the automobile industry (Tesla). It can change everything! Bill is currently working on Phoenix House Homestead - a co-living concept that reduces costs while providing community for those who live there. Tosh has the pleasure of talking to Nikki DeBartolo and Benjamin Heldfond Co-Founders of Our Happy Divorce, a service that offers guidance on creating a post-divorce happy, modern family and Authors of "Our Happy Divorce - How Ending Our Marriage Brought Us Together". Why they made the decisions they did to support a 'happy divorce' and focus on their Son through the process. This is an honest, frank and authentic conversation with two great, kind and generous people sharing their 'why' to help, support and inspire others thinking about or going through a divorce to choose a kinder, more compassionate and ultimately a happier path. Responding to the needs of current times, she emphasizes the importance of integration, embodiment, and impeccability. She is an adopted member of the Native American Church and is legally approved and protected by this ministry as a medicine woman and Sacrament carrier. Cristina offers an impeccable container for ceremonial gatherings that honors authentic relationship, cultivates sacredness, and supports the restructuring of the cellular and light body matrix. Here, soul-family connection reignites. She also demystifies traditional practices that hold overlays unnecessary to our current times, bringing essential skills and inner navigation tools to help us all reconnect to our planet and embody our capacities as conscious co-creative beings. In her individual session work with people, Cristina serves as an oracle, open and receptive to higher aspects of consciousness delivering what is transmitted. The specifics of this intimate and intuitive work is unknown until the precise moment arrives when questions, curiosities, and/or concerns lead us forward. Through this process, what no longer serves can be released and restored to greater Divine alignment.

In this episode, we discover the most effective natural treatment for depression, anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain that you’ve probably never heard of – but that thousands of psychiatrists and primary care providers are already providing to their patients. So what is this veritable panacea for the mind? It’s the Fisher Wallace Stimulator®, a wearable neurostimulation device invented by electrical engineers in partnership with physicians and research scientists. Joining the show to teach us more about this device and why Electroconvulsive therapy treatments are so effective is Kelly Roman, co-founder of Fisher Wallace Laboratories. The Fisher Wallace Stimulator® received FDA-Clearance for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and insomnia back in 1990 under the original brand name Liss Cranial Stimulator®. By 2010, several hundred psychiatrists were prescribing the device and finding it to be effective with thousands of treatment-resistant patients. In 2015, additional clinical research was launched at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital and Phoenix House, resulting in a landmark study on bipolar depression. In 2017, Medicaid in Maine approved the Fisher Wallace Stimulator® for full coverage. And today, more than 9000 providers recommend the Fisher Wallace Stimulator® to their patients. So this is a full-blown, government-approved wearable device that thousands of people are benefitting from today, and that thousands more could surely benefit from if they knew this alternative to prescription drugs existed. I used to be on medication and it really made me feel terrible. I was in a bad place and I needed some help, but I wish I had known an alternative like this existed. So if you know someone who is struggling with more traditional treatments for depression, anxiety, insomnia, or chronic pain, let them know about Fisher Wallace. Topics Discussed In This Episode: What exactly you can expect from Electroconvulsive therapy (also known as “ECT”), and how it’s different from other forms of neurostimulation How ECT is different from happened to Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest How does the device help your body release dopamine, serotonin and fall into a state of deep relaxation, no drugs required. The history of Electroconvulsive therapy, going back to the ‘70s when doctors started to explore it for depression in place of antidepressants The fascinating results of Fisher Wallace’s bipolar study, which was conducted with both a placebo group and a crossover design. How Luke and others are using Fisher Wallace to enhance their meditation The device’s effect on your HRV scores, or heart rate variability What it takes to legally make a medical claim for a device or drug What causes clinical insomnia and how we can all have a higher quality of sleep, with and without medical intervention Why improving someone’s mood and sleep is hugely helpful for addicts trying to stay sober The relationship between depression and your phone or social media use Other lifestyle practices that will help support your mood and quality of sleep More about this episode. After an upbringing and young adulthood in rural Alaska that could generously be described as "some Story of Job shit", Lauren Murphy found herself hopelessly addicted to drugs and near the end of her rope. She had taken just about as many punches from Life as she could take. So she decided to punch back. Now Lauren is a happily married mom and professional MMA fighter in the UFC with a record of 9 wins and 3 losses, and, far more importantly, she's clean and has been for years. If her story doesn't move you, then you are probably dead. And not just regular old "oh I'm dead inside" type dead, but literally dead. We met Lauren at The MMA Lab in Phoenix where she taught us how to kick and punch (badly, but that's not her fault) and then we sat down at the Phoenix House of Comedy to talk about fighting. Fighting addiction, fighting your demons, fighting for your life, etc. (We talk about actual fighting too.) Before the interview, you'll hear a conversation the three of us had on Saturday at the Golden Spike Comedy Festival in Salt Lake City. Being in the heart of Mormon World had religion on our mind, so be ready for some blasphemy in this un. Enjoy!
