Scientology recruitment rarely looks the way people imagine. There is no shadowy figure pulling you into a back room. The process is warm, and, for a curious young person, entirely easy to be “handled” and sucked in. Amir Essalhi was 18 years old and studying film when he first walked into the Edinburgh organization in late 2022. He had never heard of Hubbard. He did not know who David Miscavige was. He knew one thing: He was into being an aspiring filmmaker, and loved Tom Cruise. When he was shown a Scientology recruitment video with Tom Cruise his curiosity to know more was the tool used to manipulate him. Less than two years later, Amir was running the group's social media strategy across TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, delivering public lectures, and serving as one of the senior executives of the only Scientology organization in Scotland's capital. He was 19. I spoke with Amir twice, first on a live stream, and then on my Cults, Culture & Coercion podcast. What he shared in both conversations is something every young person, and every parent of a young person, needs to hear. Scientology has been all over some social media channels as some people were running into Scientology buildings and posting the video of their illegal trespassing. I have been vocal criticizing this as has Leah Remini- whose original show I was on as a guest. Many of the platforms Scientology uses to reach young people carry no Scientology branding at all. Amir confirmed that promotional materials would sometimes run under names like "Dianetics" or localized event names, with "Scientology" buried in fine print or absent entirely. The group also uses front organizations, including Narconon (drug rehabilitation), the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, and Drug Free World, none of which disclose their Scientology ties in their public-facing materials. Destructive authoritarian cults know that if they give fully informed consent, no one would ever get involved. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Michele Diane "Shelly" Miscavige was once one of the most powerful women in the Church of Scientology—the wife of its leader, David Miscavige, and a commanding figure within the organisation's elite Sea Org division. But in August 2005, Shelly vanished from public view following a reported confrontation with her husband. For years, no one outside Scientology's inner circle saw or heard from her. Her disappearance sparked intense speculation, celebrity involvement, and even a missing person's report filed by actress Leah Remini in 2013. The Church insists Shelly is alive, well, and working at a secret Scientology compound in California—but she hasn't been seen in public for nearly two decades. This is the story of Shelly Miscavige—a woman who rose to the heights of power within one of the world's most secretive organisations, only to disappear without a trace.Become a Patreon or Apple + subscriber now for ealry and ad free access from as little as $1.69 a week. Ah yes, 2025. What a year for great film. Wait, that's not what we do... The guys start the year off correctly by talking about the cream of the crap for the previous year of cinema, starting off with Mel Gibson's Flight Risk. Did Mel really need AI for a moose... and a MOTEL?! Why is the vetting process for pilots this awful? What is with that bald cap? Why in the world was Hasan played by a different voice actor and physical actor? This movie is a mess! Next week: music is the soundtrack of movies. We're back with the second half of our conversation with the unstoppable Heather Gay: housewife, truth-teller, and newly minted slayer of Mormon silence. Heather gets real (and really funny) about what she's gained since stepping away from the church: self-discovery, creative freedom, and the kind of joy 10-year-old her would've fainted over. We dig into her docuseries Surviving Mormonism, the tidal wave of stories she's helping bring to light, and the church's (let's call it) “creative” approach to handling abuse reports. Heather opens up about the personal cost of speaking out, the shocking stories that rocked her the most, and how she's rebuilding her relationship with spirituality from the ground up. And because this is our show, we of course veer into bras, garments, guilty pleasures, and whether Heather might be the Leah Remini of Mormonism (spoiler: yes). We laughed, almost cried, plotted a three-way meetup with Leah, and even talked laser hair removal. Settle in—this one's heartfelt, hilarious, and peak Heather Gay.Follow Heather on Instagram and Facebook, pick up her memoir, Bad Mormon, and catch Surviving Mormonism on Peacock or Bravo.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of child and sexual abuse. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. In this video, we react to Scientology and the Aftermath Season 1 Episode 7, where Leah Remini and Mike Rinder expose the devastating effects of Scientology's disconnection policy and the pressure of training for auditing. We share our perspective on how David Miscavige constantly changes the rules to tighten control, keeping members in a cycle of confusion and dependency. We also dive into the heartbreaking impact of being cut off from family, especially when tragedy strikes, and how those losses are made even more painful by the church's demands for loyalty over love. Drawing from our own experiences in high-demand religious groups, we connect the dots between Scientology and other communities that use similar tactics of control.
In this episode, we dive into Scientology and the Aftermath Season 1, Episode 5, and explore the striking similarities between two powerful and controversial leaders: Warren Jeffs of the FLDS Church and David Miscavige of Scientology.Sam, who grew up in the FLDS under Warren Jeffs' leadership, shares his firsthand perspective on the control, manipulation, and fear tactics that mirror what Leah Remini and Mike Rinder expose about Scientology. Together, Sam and Melissa break down the patterns of abuse, secrecy, and loyalty demands that connect these two worlds.Whether it's through isolation, unquestioned authority, or the silencing of dissent, both Jeffs and Miscavige reveal how high-demand groups can trap their followers in systems of control.
In this video, we react to Scientology: The Aftermath Season 1 Episode 4, “Answering Questions.” Leah Remini and Mike Rinder take on tough questions about Scientology—and as ex-members of high-demand religions ourselves, we couldn't help but notice the striking similarities to other groups. From polygamous sects like the FLDS and AUB, to mainstream religious organizations, many of the questions Leah was asked apply across the board. We share our own experiences, highlight the common tactics that cults use to control members, and discuss how people inside these groups are often taught to think, question, and defend their beliefs.Join us as we break down this episode, compare stories, and open the conversation about the universal patterns found in high-demand groups and cults. If you or someone you love has left polygamy and needs assistance, please reach out to "Holding Out HELP" at 801-548-3492 or visit their website at www.holdingouthelp.orgAt Growing Up In Polygamy our mission is to "Create compassion for communities that have been misunderstood, marginalized and/or abused by their leaders, and to empower those who have left by giving them a platform to share their stories with the world."If you would like to DONATE to this cause you can do so here: https://donorbox.org/growing-up-in-polygamyInsta: @growingupinpolygamyNew website is now up! www.growingupinpolygamy.comTheme Song created by @artcowles Please feel free to reach out to us!growingupinpolygamy@gmail.com

In the wake of updates to Child Safety Standards emerging from Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, Mirriam Francis wrote to Victoria's Commission for Children and Young People outlining the ways in which she sees Scientology teachings and practices to be violating these standards. While concepts of religious freedom and choice can muddy the waters of certain discussions around coercive organisations, Mirriam sees the regulations and laws to protect children as a key lens through which such practices need to be viewed and pursued. In 1993 Mel Gibson's first directorial effort was a smaller movie named “The Man Without A Face.” Since then he's made nothing but big, epic movies like “Braveheart” and “Hacksaw Ridge.” Now he's going back to his smaller movie roots with the suspense thriller “Flight Risk.” Mel starred in “Father Stu” with Mark Wahlberg and apparently they forged a friendship because Wahlberg is the name at the top of the poster for this movie. In Gibson's latest directorial effort, Wahlberg plays a pilot flying a U.S. Marshal, played by Michelle Dockery and her cooperating government witness, played by Topher Grace, out of Alaska in a small plane. Seems pretty straightforward right? Not so much, otherwise we wouldn't have a movie. As this movie's trailers show, Wahlberg is really a hitman hired by the mobster that the witness will testify against. After Wahlberg makes his move against them, the U.S. Marshal manages to subdue and restrain him. Now she has to try to fly a plane, with no training, while keeping an eye on the witness and especially on the hitman. Will the marshal and the witness make it out alive? Who else is involved in this assassination plot? Is “Flight Risk” even worth putting your seat in the upright position and stowing your tray table to watch? Find out in this episode! “Flight Risk” also stars Leah Remini, Monib Abhat, Paul Ben-Victor, Maaz Ali and Eilise Patton. Chelsea and podcast producer Kristina Lopez dive deep into the friendship between Jennifer Lopez and Leah Remini by combing through the pages of their memoirs — “True Love” and “Troublemaker” — to find insights into their best friend breakup and now rumored reconciliation. Since our media landscape is lacking authentic female friendship break-up stories, they explore this one to the max: from the timeline of how J.Lo and Leah's bond unraveled to their glamorous shared moments at Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' lavish wedding to the quiet rift that left Leah absent from J.Lo's high-profile wedding to Ben Affleck. Chelsea and Kristina use this friendship story to explore the beautiful, nuanced, and powerful love that can exist in female friendships — and what happens when that bond is broken. Join us as we uncover the secrets of the Church with our insightful guest, Claire Headley, who shares the last known details of David Miscavige's auditing sessions and the daring escape of Jan. From the bizarre facial hair policies to the peculiar incidents involving fire ants and black widow spiders, Claire paints a vivid picture of the daily life inside this enigmatic organization. We also explore the curious case of a former Cinemax actor now working closely with Tom Cruise and reflect on the Aftermath Foundation's significant impact, including its outreach in Canada. In a candid discussion, Claire reveals how Scientologists judge each other based on their knowledge of the Church, rather than traditional measures of success. We reminisce about the quirky anecdotes, such as David Miscavige's musical preferences and the determined search for a runaway dog. Moreover, we address the challenges faced by former members reentering the workforce, highlighting the indispensable role of the Aftermath Foundation in job placements and resume building. We also touch upon the peculiar rules around relationships and marriage within Scientology, shedding light on the high divorce rates and celibacy before marriage.Escaping Scientology is no easy feat, and the ongoing surveillance faced by ex-members is nothing short of daunting. And…we're back for part two of our conversation with Claire Headley, a defiant Scientology whistleblower who still owes the shadowy organization a billion minus 30 years on her contract. (Don't hold your breath, David Miscavige.) Born and bred in England's Scientology boarding schools before rising up through the ranks all the way to headquarters, Claire's escape after a lifetime of indoctrination is nothing short of heroic. In this follow-up, she shares more about the details of her exit, her thoughts on the future of Scientology, and her role as an expert witness for the prosecution in the Danny Masterson trial. This episode is as insidery as an insider account of L. Ron's house gets. Also, paging Trey Parker and Matt Stone: We see you and we appreciate you. SHOW NOTES: Claire Headley escaped L. Ron's Church of Scientology, bravely emerging from its dark depths to share her harrowing experiences with the world. Since breaking free 18 years ago, Claire has become a prominent advocate for survivors, shedding light on the church's practices, its culture of control, and the struggles faced by those who leave. She's also continued to be abused by its powerful reach. As President of The Aftermath Foundation, Claire helps others – often with no work experience or family beyond Sea Org – leave Scientology. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/culty and get on your way to being your best self. In part one of this 2-parter, we feature Scientology defector and whistleblower Claire Headley who spent 30 years in the church isolated from her family and basically any outside influence. Headley was born and bred in England's Scientology boarding schools, was shipped to the big blue buildings in LA, and then onto headquarters. Thoroughly indoctrinated, she landed at the mother church, Sea Org, where she signed billion-year contracts and rose through the ranks. In this episode, she describes her childhood. She recounts personal tragedies and abuses. She tells us what it's like to experience the practice of fair game – beginning at age two. And she shares what the nearly intractable clutches of this 100% high-control group felt like. Until her own husband escaped without her, and the proverbial shelf broke. Her almost foiled escape is an action sequence you won't want to miss. SHOW NOTES: Claire Headley escaped L. The Murdaugh New Trial Status Conference that happened on Tuesday January 16th confirmed that the deliberated witnesses and Becky Hill will be questioned by Justice Toal on Monday January 29th. To get a new trial, not only do the witnesses need to state that Becky Hill had substantial conversations with them about the trial but that it impacted their decision. I'll be covering that proceeding, gavel to gavel. Also, on Tuesday 16th, Leah Remini v Scientology had a hearing to go over the claims made by both sides. Leah requested an injunction due to the overwhelming harassment campaign focused on her by the church. Scientology filed an anti-SLAPP motion to dismiss the entire case. No decision was made on the motions but I expect a decision to be made soon. Alec Baldwin was indicted on the charge of involuntary manslaughter in the state of New Mexico on Friday 19th January. This is the second time the state is charging Alec with the crime. The first time, the state withdrew the charges stating they needed more time to gather evidence. Both sides have made it clear they will not go into mediation regarding this lawsuit, making a court showdown highly likely.David Miscavige, the ecclesiastical leader, claims he was never properly served by Leah's team and should be removed from the lawsuit. Leah has requested the court place an injunction on the church of Scientology due to their continued harassment campaign against her. The manner of which has become so severe that by the time the trial is over, her reputation could be irreparably damaged. The Church of Scientology has additionally filed an anti-SLAPP motion claiming their reciprocal right to speech is based on public interest.
