We've talked about mediocre X-Men films before, so for The New Mutants we decided to try something a little different. Returning guests and X-Men experts Robyn Slack (Quantuum Kickflip) and Olav Rokne (Unofficial Hugo Book Club Blog) face off against seasoned movie punch-up veterans Scott C. Bourgeois and Gregg Beever in an epic movie pitch battle. Liam Creswick judges this winner-take-all I Have Some Notes slugfest. What spoils await the victor? I donno, pride or something.
Paul W.S. Anderson had to wait an extra week for our Event Horizon episode, but we promise, Paul, it was worth the wait. Big thanks for Olav Rokne for saving our skin at the 11th hour, subbing in for Scott C. Bourgeois who was not available to record. Together we make minor tweaks to a flawed, yet charming sci-fi horror. A change in motivation here, a removal of a text crawl there. I'd say Paul got off easy.
This week on the Nerdcast Dan, Chelsea, and Marcus all sit down to chat about the upcoming Halloween season and what we all can do to keep ourselves safe. Then later we have a very special guest appearance from the Alberta Podcast Network Scott C. Bourgeois conducts an interview with Ben Saunders from the Edmonton Telus World of Science to talk about the latest exhibit Marvel: Universe of Heroes.Donate to the Stollery through Extra Life.https://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.participant&participantID=349213Check out some of Scott’s stuffhttp://ihavesomenotes.com/https://readalongpod.blogspot.com/Check out More on the Northern Nerd NetworkTwitter / @Northern_NerdFacebook / Facebook.com/NorthernNerdYouTube / YouTube.com/NorthernNerdNetworkNorthernnerdnetwork.com
Welcome to the Mess Hall Podcast, part of the @albertapodnet powered by @atbfinancial. This week's guest is Blake Enemark, head brewer at O.T. Brewing Company. We are talking about how he got his start in the brewing business, the process and fine tuning of making beer, and special projects! Follow these links to find out more about Ot> brewing Company. In person: 1155E 44 AVE SECalgary, AlbertaT2G 4X4 Online: otbrewingcompany.com Facebook: @otbrewingcompany Twitter: @OTbrewing_co This week's podcast shout out is going to I Have Some Notes. You shuffle your way to your seat, your oversized cola sloshing precariously against its lid as you carefully navigate past an aisle of movie-goers. The seat thumps as you drop heavily into your chair, stretching out your popcorn and cola in front of you to counter balance your descent. You smile as the lights dim and the projector fires up, “I’ve been waiting for this movie for months” you sputter through a mouthful of popcorn. The opening theme rumbles “Here we go!” And… It’s not that good. Maybe it was the pacing, maybe it was a scene that needed to be deleted or added, or maybe it was Batman v Superman. “It wasn’t awful” you think to yourself as you leave the theatre “I wonder what they could’ve changed to fix it?” Glad you said that, because we’ve often wondered that ourselves. What if the Man of Steel wasn’t such a Man of Heel? What if Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left out all the monkeys? What if Prometheus made even just the smallest bit of sense? Just a tiny bit?! Each month on I Have Some Notes self proclaimed Movie Experts™ Liam Creswick, Gregg Beever and Scott C. Bourgeois take a movie that sucked, but had potential, and put it through a vigorous podcasting notes process to try to turn it into a blockbuster. Are we always successful? Probably! With the help of dynamite guests such as Danica LeBlanc, Erin Beever, Anita Bourgeois, Cinematological, German Villegas, Brandon Schatz, Jay Runham, Adam Rozenhart, Sam Power, Andrea Beca and so many others we’ve fixed tepid movies like The Dark Knight Rises, Star Trek: Generations, Waterworld and more! If this sounds like your jam, join us in a journey down screen writing’s toilet on I Have Some Notes! Available on iTunes, Google Play and Stitcher. This weeks show is brought to you in part form Alberta Forest Products Association. Find out more at albertaforestproducts.ca
Scott C. Bourgeois and I talk about our respective adoptions, what part of your body you should eat first if you were trapped on an island, all the effing podcasts he is involved with, and the best of kid lit.
In the future the polar ice caps have melted and the oceans cover every continent. It's a world of damp. A world of wet. A world…of water. Waterworld, everybody! Whoo boy, this was a tough sit. Kevin Costner delivers a performance so subdued you'll think he's reading from a Shop Vac instruction manual. But no movie-fixing job is too tough for the Notesy Boys! I think we actually crushed it. In fact we spend a few minutes patting ourselves on the back about it. Scott C. Bourgeois continues his stint as temp-host while Colin is away, Jeff Samsonow guest stars and Gregg is…also there. Just FYI, the secret project Scott mentions at the end of the episode is no longer secret, go check out The Read Along where ever fine podcasts are sold!
The wait is over. I Have Some Notes is back for its 3rd season of movie improving and we're returning with a series of firsts for the show. The first first is our first Bond film: Moonraker. Yes, the Bond movie that never heard the phrase "less is more." Italian murder caskets? Sure. Super boats? Two please. Space? You bet your ass! Second on the list of firsts is no Colin. Mr. MacIntyre is off being a new daddy and will miss a few episodes, but the talented Scott C. Bourgeois has volunteered to sit in his chair and keep it warm. The last, but probably most important first is that this is our first episode as a member of the Alberta Podcast Network powered by ATB Financial. We're stoked to be joining the Network and its fleet of amazing shows sailing through the digital airwaves. Big thanks to Karen Unland for all her hard work putting the network together and helping to make our passion project more sustainable. Alright, enough preamble. Please join Scott, Gregg, Anita and the hilarious Liam Creswick in fixing James Bond: The Moonrakening!
Of the many praises we can shower on the Alien movies, Alien 3 is certainly the one with the highest shaved head count. Colin and Gregg are joined by now I Have Some Notes regulars Scott C. Bourgeois and Erin Beever talk about the thirdest movie in the Alien series. They discuss the plight of young up-and-coming directors; Ripley boning down with Tywin Lannister; saving Newt and Corporal Hicks, smelty smazes and turning Alien into a heist movie.
We're back, and it's time to talk about movies and other junk! Colin and Gregg chat with Scott C. Bourgeois and Erin Beever about what they've been watching over the last month. They crew hits on The Expanse, Leverage, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Moana, The Lego Batman Movie and Mass Effect: Andromeda.
It's Oscar time, and the movie world is abuzz with speculation as to who will be the big winners and losers come Oscar night. Who are the category favourites? Who has the most to gain from an Academy Award? Who will get snubbed the hardest? "Somebody tell me!" you plead, "Give me the cure for my Oscars fever!" Well, you're in luck, dear listeners, because we recorded a special episode that answers none of those questions! Mostly we sat around the table talking about how great The Nice Guys was. Join Colin and Gregg with Oscars Experts™ Scott C. Bourgeois and Mark Jowett for our very first I Have Some Notes Oscars Special!
Prometheus is a very divisive movie. Some fans triumph its beauty, world building and willingness to tackle some big themes. Others bemoan its confusing script and the high rate of baffling decisions made by its main characters. In other words, it was a movie made for this podcast! Scott C. Bourgeois, formerly of The Unknown Studio fame, joins us along with returning guest Erin Beever to unravel this confounding sci-fi masterpiece. We jump into the Med-Pod and perform abdominal surgery on Prometheus, pulling out all its entrails and then trying in vain to put everything back better than when we found it.
What's the best way to wrap up your 6th season? Why, with a variety show performed live in front of an audience, that's how! The show featured some incredible entertainment, including: new music from local a cappella group Apocalypse Kow stand-up comedy by Edmonton's own Clare Belford an interview with former online editor and head of Capital Ideas from the Edmonton Journal Karen Unland a hilarious panel of nerds — including Samantha Power, Scott C Bourgeois, Devin R Bruce, Joel Forth, and Karen Unland — defending their favourite Star Trek series in what's being called Battle of the Trekses
It was the best of times, it was the... well, less than best of times. And what I'm referring to is season 4 of the Unknown Studio. Yes, friends, this episode marks the end of 19 episodes of greatness*. And in order to inspire you, we brought current Mayor Stephen Mandel to our studio to talk about his career, the upcoming municipal election, and what comes next for the man who's been Edmonton's mayor for three terms. There's some other fabulous content here, too. A dramatic reading by one Scott C. Bourgeois, a rant by yours truly, and a peek at what Edmonton Nerd Nite has to offer. Give us a listen, and try not to be too upset that we're taking the summer off. Also, let us know what you thought of the episode in the comments! *According to Adam Rozenhart and Scott C. Bourgeois.
Wow, we've done 70 episodes of the Unknown Studio since June 2009. And this one, like many of its predecessors, is a doozy, my friends. After much whining, griping and threatening from Mr. James Leask, we finally acquiesced and invited the Comics! the Blog guys onto the show. (And, truthfully, it didn't take much arm-twisting since we so thoroughly enjoy James and Brandon.) Comics! the Blog, also known as Podcast! the Comics, was launched at the beginning of the year, and James and Brandon only have two rules: be positive, and always strive to improve. The rest you'll need to hear for your own self. Here's the episode breakdown: 0:00: Intro - "LRT robots" 1:06: It's a bird, it's a plane, it's James Leask and Brandon Schatz! 23:30: News on the forthcoming live-show — in telephonic form! 29:11: A Dramatic Reading with Scott C Bourgeois — tips and warnings when playing Dance Dance Revolution 34:56: A contest! You could win stuff! 39:15: James makes the podcast unlistenable... AS PLANNED 56:48: The Fast 16 with James Leask and Brandon Schatz Download the episode directly to your desktop. Nothing beats Valentine's Day. Except maybe Christmas. And Halloween. AND THIS PODCAST. But we're all about celebrating V-Day all the same. And in order to do so, we invited Lauren Albrecht, the voice of Sex Talk (one of our old segments) to come on the show and talk to us about her Masters research — which is all about sex toy parties. Oh yes. In this episode, you'll also learn about a very cool, weekend-long fashion show taking place started February 17 at Metropolis on Churchill Square. You'll also hear a rant from yours truly, and a dramatic reading from the now-fully-convalesced Scott C Bourgeois. Enjoy!
Merry Christmas, everyone! In this very special Christmas episode of the Unknown Studio, Scott and I chat with Jonn and Sam, two of the creators of the Edmonton: A City podcast segment. And wouldn't you know it, but they have a segment in this very episode! There's also some other tidbits in here from Scott and myself, as well as a gift exchange between the two hosts. Here's the breakdown: 0:00: Intro - "look at my sack!" 1:00: Welcome to the Edmonton: A City boys 19:58: Christmas in Space - yes, this is a severe Star Trek reference 23:36: How podcasts get started 43:27: Edmonton: A City - A special Christmas segment 54:38: A Dramatic Reading with Scott C Bourgeois - in which Scott outdoes Adam by telling EVERY CHRISTMAS STORY AT ONCE 1:01:15: A Christmas gift exchange; also Scott and Adam get confused 1:10:39: The Fast Sixteen with Sam and Jonn
And so we come to a special summer episode, featuring content from two of our favourite summer festivals here in Edmonton — the Folk Music Festival and the International Fringe Festival. So I guess that either makes this show a season two postscript, or else a season three prequel. I'll let you decide. Here's what we have in store for you... 0:00: Scott blows the dust off our recording equipment 2:02: Adam talks to Kat Danser at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival 6:25: Adam talks to the Deep Dark Woods at the EFMF 11:56: Sex Talk with Lauren – Have Dildo Will Travel 14:17: 30 years of the International Fringe Festival 16:57: Adam talks to Scott C. Bourgeois and Leah Anderson about two Fringe productions they're in 27:15: Scott talks to two lovely women from New York, performing at the Fringe for Channel One 37:15: Adam chats with young playwright and Fringe performer Ben Wheelwright 43:49: Scott shares a few moment with several Kows from Apocalypse Kow 51:22: Scott talks to Trent Wilkie from the one-man show Aachen 1:00:30: Outro
I know you've been waiting for this. It's like a new Christmas tradition! Instead of going to church or opening presents, you can all gather 'round the old iTunes box and listen to that there podcast what's hosted by those sweet, sensitive young men, Mr Scott C Bourgeois and Mr Adam Rozenhart. Scott and I decided to make our first Christmas episode a little bit different — so we told the guest we'd had booked to go fly a sleigh. Rather than interview someone, we have a "conversation" with each other. We discuss our families' Christmas traditions and the Christmas films we enjoy; we share stories from some of our listeners who had some nightmarish Mall Santa experiences (actually, that would be a great name for a Christmas Band: the Mall Santa Experience™); and we even exchange gifts, almost live, right there on the air! So while you're wrapping gifts, chugging some nog, or sobbing quietly to yourself, why not give us a listen? If you had a podcast, we'd listen to yours! And from both Scott and his lovely finacée Anita, and from myself and my beautiful girlfriend Rachel: Merry Christmas to everyone! Enjoy the time off, enjoy the food, and enjoy each other!
On this, the most recent episode of the Unknown Studio (eight! eight episodes! Scott never believed in us!), Mr. Scott C. Bourgeois and I interview Brent Jans, the festival director of Edmonton's Pure Speculation Science Fiction Festival. Also called Pure Spec by nerdy and geeky stalwarts (we love you guys!), the festival is happening for the fifth year this weekend, October 2 to 4 at the Shaw Conference Centre. Events throughout the weekend include panel discussions and keynote addresses with science fiction authors, game developers, artists, and a variety of other sci-fi geniuses; RPGs being played; merchant booths; and more! Scott and I spent an hour with Brent, and honestly, it was enough to convince me to attend the Festival this weekend... In between drinking and seeing Zombieland, of course. Registration is $15 before the event if you purchase from any Happy Harbor location or $20 at the door or by registering online. Also featured in this episode, other than my patented Fast 15 is a dip into the Unknown Studio mailbag. One of our tens of listeners emailed us. You can too! Give us a listen and send us your feedback!
Coming at you sort of live from an abandoned cabin in the woods... On our second episode of the Unknown Studio, Scott C. Bourgeois and I talk to Don Iveson, Edmonton City Councillor for Ward 5. Our topics: smart growth, transit-oriented development, the Fraser Institute, and hilarious trivia. As always, spread the love if you feel the love.
