Roger welcomes Robert Lawson, economist, author, and director of the Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom at Southern Methodist University. Lawson is the co-author of “Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World.”In this episode, they discuss Lawson's firsthand observations from socialist regimes including Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea and how central planning continues to fail the people living under it. They explore the dangerous appeal of socialism in modern political discourse, the real differences between Scandinavian welfare states and actual socialist systems, and why economic freedom remains essential to human flourishing. Plus, they highlight the power (and unfortunate rarity) of an engaging and accessible economics education that equips students with a lifelong understanding of how the world works.Robert Lawson is a founding co-author of the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of the World annual report, which presents an economic freedom index for over 160 countries tracking which nations thrive—and which collapse—based on policy choices. He received the 2025 TFAS Gary M. Walton Award for Excellence in Economic Education. The Liberty + Leadership Podcast is hosted by TFAS president Roger Ream and produced by Podville Media. Hosts: Erin Rider and Andy Cupp  SCOTUS rules in favor of Pres. Trump over Alien Enemies Act  President Trump may move forward with the deportation of Tren de Aragua gang members. That's according to a narrowly split ruling from the United States Supreme Court. But those who are set to be deported must receive due process -- they must receive notice of their deportation under the Alien Enemies Act and must also get their day in court to plead their case as to why they shouldn't be deported. The Inside Sources hosts go in-depth on the ruling.    SCOTUS blocks order requiring Trump administration to reinstate fired federal workers  More confusion today for thousands of federal probationary workers recently fired by the Trump administration. A federal judge had ordered the administration to reinstate those employees, saying the process for the firings was a problem. But this morning, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed that lower court's decision. Now, the Trump Administration has the green light to move ahead with the firings and not worry about reinstating those workers.    Dozens of countries looking to negotiate new tariffs  Will the massive tariffs placed on foreign countries trigger negotiations and improve the trade imbalance? It's what President Trump said would happen, but economists still aren't convinced. However, there are reports now of dozens of countries already reaching out to the administration asking to renegotiate trade and tariffs. That news sent stocks hirer today. Inside Sources discusses the possible negotiations and Congress’ role in all of it.    Cabinet members visit Utah – a sign of the state’s growing political influence?  During their visits to Utah yesterday, three members of President Trump's Cabinet praised the state for its work along the lines of health, food, and transportation. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke of wanting to implement a similar ban on fluoride in drinking water – something Utah passed during the legislative session – and make it nationwide. Erin and Andy talk about the growing status of Utah in national politics.    Opinion: Utah will continue trend of cutting taxes  During this last legislative session, the Utah state legislature prioritized giving Utahns yet another tax cut -- for the fifth year in a row. And even though the budget was looking tight, they still found a way to eliminate some taxes, including some taxes on social security benefits. Deseret News Opinion Editor Jay Evensen thinks this tax-cutting trend will continue. He joins the show to talk more about that.    Utah pursuing mining partnership with Canada  Governor Spencer Cox -- joined by state, business, and energy leaders -- continues to tour Canada this week on a mission to strengthen trade ties between the state and Canada. One thing that's been a focus of the visit so far is energy and natural resources. In fact, Canada's Fraser Institute has identified Utah as not one of the most -- but as THE MOST -- attractive location for mining investment. Brian Somers, President of the Utah Mining Association is there on the trade mission and joins us to share some insights.    Dire wolves coming back from extinction  It may sound a little Jurassic Park, and it sort of is. Scientists, using DNA from teeth and bones, say they’ve been able to bring back the extinct dire wolf. Erin and Andy finish the show discussing the potential ethical implications of such a move.

Zukunft Denken – Podcast

V. (Ulm), emerit. Was passiert, wenn Schwellenländer folgen? Was wurde etwa in Baku beschlossen? Funktionieren Transferzahlungen? Warum scheitert eine Renewables Only Strategie zwangsläufig? »Die Idee, Renewables Only, ist ja eine von Deutschland immer wieder propagierte Idee.[… Es] ist nur eine Methode, [Entwicklungsländer] arm zu halten« Aber was ist die Alternative? Was ist Carbon Capture? Was ist die Rolle von Kernkraft? Welche Mischung verschiedener Verfahren ist sinnvoll? Zuletzt diskutieren wir über Strom vs. Moleküle und den All-Electric-Irrtum. Damit verbunden ist der Irrglaube, Wasserstoff könnte das Renable-Desaster lösen.  Welche geopolitischen Herausforderungen sind mit diesen Themen verknüpft? Ist Prof. Radermacher optimistisch — für Europa, die Welt? Was könnte man jungen Menschen empfehlen? Referenzen Andere Episoden Episode 109: Was ist Komplexität? In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Angelo interviews Mark Zacharias, the Executive Director of Clean Energy Canada. The discussion centers around a rebuttal to an article published by the Fraser Institute, which claimed that renewable energy is going to be significantly more expensive than anticipated. Mark Zacharias addresses three main arguments presented in the Fraser Institute article: Renewable Energy Costs: The article suggests that renewable energy drives up costs and is intermittent, making electricity grids less reliable. Mark counters this by highlighting examples from jurisdictions like South Australia and Iowa, where the transition to renewable energy has led to lower electricity costs. He notes that in Alberta, recent renewable energy procurements have resulted in power bids as low as $0.05 per kilowatt hour, significantly cheaper than the retail electricity rates. Impact of Climate Policies on the Grid: The article argues that climate policies, such as EV sales mandates and natural gas bans, will overwhelm the electricity grid. Mark refutes this by explaining that EVs have a minimal impact on grid demand and can even contribute to grid stability through vehicle-to-grid technologies. He also emphasizes the efficiency of heat pumps compared to traditional heating methods, which can lead to overall energy savings. Electricity Imports and Structural Deficits: The article claims that Canada's reliance on electricity imports indicates a structural deficit. Mark clarifies that while British Columbia has imported power during droughts, this practice allows for strategic management of resources and has resulted in significant profits from power trading. He argues that imports can be beneficial and do not signify a failure of the grid. Throughout the conversation, Mark emphasizes the importance of updated information and the need to move beyond outdated narratives about renewable energy. He advocates for a future where clean energy is not only viable but also economically advantageous, countering the misconceptions perpetuated by the Fraser Institute's article. In particular, he learned the importance of free speech, and he found a treasure of information in the Foundation for Economic Education and the Mises Institute. In his final semester, he completed a directed study on the economic origins of marital decline, and he achieved his first academic publication with the Boston University Brownstone Journal. After completing his BA in economics, he returned to New Zealand and completed a second major in political science at the University of Waikato. While there, he became a student columnist for Nexus Magazine and found unexpected success. The top provincial paper, the Waikato Times, published him, and these early columns opened the door to work with think tanks in Canada and the United States. His first article stateside made the Washington Times, and his second achieved national syndication. He cut his teeth as a reporter and editor in Louisiana with the Pelican Institute, before becoming the director of fiscal policy studies for the John Locke Foundation in North Carolina. Alongside these roles, he wrote for countless outlets—including the American Conservative, the Daily Caller, Econ Journal Watch, Fox News, the Fraser Institute, the Future of Freedom Foundation, and WND.com—and he started his own podcast on liberty around the world. This later evolved into the Gold Newsletter Podcast. He was the founding editor in chief of the PanAm Post and is the founder and director of Econ Americas, a consultancy devoted to international finance, geopolitical risk, and jurisdictional arbitrage. During this time,

Interview with Mark Chalmers, CEO, of Energy Fuels and Phil Williams, CEO of IsoEnergyRecording date: 29th July 2024Uranium Investment: A Strategic Opportunity in the Evolving Energy LandscapeThe global energy sector is transforming significantly, driven by increasing demand for clean, reliable power sources. In this context, uranium and nuclear energy are gaining renewed attention from investors, utilities, and policymakers alike. This resurgence presents a compelling investment opportunity, particularly in the North American uranium market. The fundamental case for uranium investment is underpinned by a growing supply-demand imbalance. Years of underinvestment in new uranium projects and the gradual depletion of existing mines have created a structural deficit in the market. As President and CEO of Energy Fuels, Mark Chalmers emphasizes, "You got to replace those pounds, and we know that's getting more expensive around the world." This supply constraint is occurring against a backdrop of increasing global energy demands and a push for clean power sources to address climate change concerns.Geopolitical factors are also reshaping the uranium market. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has highlighted the risks associated with dependence on Russian uranium supplies, prompting a shift towards secure, domestic sources. Phil Williams, CEO of IsoEnergy, notes, "Domestic utilities are looking for domestic supply." This trend is creating new opportunities for North American uranium producers, who benefit from established infrastructure and favorable jurisdictions. The uranium spot price has shown significant volatility, reaching highs above $100 per pound before settling in the mid-$80s range. While short-term price movements can be influenced by various factors, the long-term outlook appears positive. Williams explains, "Prices need to be higher to do exactly what Mark said, which is to replace depleting uranium." This suggests that current uranium prices may not be sustainable, given the costs of developing new projects. For investors looking to gain exposure to the uranium market, there are several avenues to consider. Established producers like Energy Fuels offer immediate exposure to potential price increases, with the benefit of diversifying into other critical minerals. Near-term producers such as IsoEnergy provide potential upside as they transition from development to production phases. Exploration companies offer higher risk but potentially significant returns for major discoveries.North American uranium assets are particularly attractive, with the United States and Canada ranking highly in mining jurisdiction assessments. The Fraser Institute recently ranked Utah and Saskatchewan among the top mining jurisdictions globally, underscoring the appeal of companies operating in these regions. However, investors should be aware of the risks and challenges in the uranium sector. These include market volatility, long development timelines for new projects, public perception issues surrounding nuclear energy, and the potential for technological disruption in the energy sector.Institutional investor interest in the uranium space is growing, which could drive significant movements in uranium equities. As Williams observes, "There are increasing lists of investors coming and looking at this space that are just dipping their toe in." Given the relatively small market capitalization of the uranium sector, an influx of institutional capital could have a substantial impact. An emerging theme in the uranium investment narrative is the potential link to the growth of AI and data centers. The massive energy requirements of these technologies could drive increased demand for reliable, baseload power sources like nuclear energy. While this connection is still speculative, it represents an intriguing potential catalyst for the sector. For investors considering entering the uranium space, careful due diligence is essential. Focus on companies with strong management teams, quality assets in favorable jurisdictions, and the financial capacity to weather market volatility. As Chalmers advises, "Stick with primarily those that have assets and in many cases more than one asset to have some diversification."In conclusion, the uranium market presents a unique investment opportunity at the intersection of energy security, climate change mitigation, and technological advancement. While challenges exist, the fundamental supply-demand imbalance and growing recognition of nuclear power's role in the clean energy transition suggest a potentially bright future for uranium. As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, uranium may well play a crucial role in meeting the world's growing energy needs while addressing climate change concerns.—Learn more: https://cruxinvestor.com/companies/energy-fuelshttps://cruxinvestor.com/companies/iso-energySign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

The story also reports that the PMO has considered recruiting Mark Carney as finance minister. It was just a few years ago that Freeland's predecessor, Bill Morneau, was similarly knifed through PMO leaks, True North's Andrew Lawton asks if we are about to see one of Trudeau's most loyal foot soldiers thrown under the bus. On this episode of The Alex Pierson Podcast, we first start out talking about high schools, and if students really benefit from taking final exams to apply to post-secondary schools. There is a growing argument to ditch them completely, but how will that help the students? Alex Pierson speaks with Paige MacPherson, the associate director of education policy at the Fraser Institute who explains why students need to learn about being tested and failing before getting into the real world. Next, after Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown revealed Ontario's first "mobile x-ray" to check shipping containers for stolen vehicles, Alex Pierson has an important question that needs answering...why do we only have one...and why in Ontario? To help make sense of it all, Alex speaks with Bryan Gast a former OPP Officer and the current VP of Investigative Services at Equite Association. Bryan helps to explain just how useful this tool is, and how it ties in with the new National Auto Theft Plan. And finally, Alex talks about the one thing many people in this province have been asking for years now...should we consider privatizing the LCBO considering another strike is likely to happen? Aaron Wudrick is the Director of Domestic Policy at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and is well-versed in this issue. Will it be good, or bad for taxpayers? Would privatizing the LCBO increase or decrease liquor selections? Tune in to find out all the answers.  We embark on a journey through the lenses of Hume, Smith, and Coase, piecing together the roles of observation and empirical study in shaping our understanding of societal conventions and moral philosophy. David Schmidtz recounts a defining moment from his academic path, sparking a robust discussion on the fusion of economics with moral considerations in the realm of ownership and resource distribution. The discussion with David delves into the essence of property ownership, dissecting what it means to hold rights over something as abstract as an idea or as concrete as land. We grapple with the notion that property is not just a "bundle of sticks" but a set of societal constructs, born from necessity and shaped by our collective desire for harmony. Through examples of conflict resolution and the negotiation of public and private interests, such as eminent domain and navigation easements, we confront the delicate dance between individual autonomy and the greater good. The philosophical undercurrents of property law are laid bare, revealing the liberal heart beating at its core. The "Desert Town" source:  https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/elements-of-justice/desert/268B6C7A9B17949572933A4DAA0CAB09Wall Street Journal article on Costco gold purchases: https://www.wsj.com/finance/investing/selling-costco-gold-bars-f14e966f Biden DOT rule on airline refunds:  https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/biden-harris-administration-announces-final-rule-requiring-automatic-refunds-airlineLynne Kiesling on The Essential Ronald Coase, Fraser Institute. How's it going? Walter? PrettyWalter (50s): Good. I want to add, I'm not just an American economist, I'm also a Canadian. I worked for the Fraser Institute for about 12 years from 1979 to 1991. And I am a, a Canadian citizen, so I'm, I'm also, I don't know how to say out and about yet correctly, but otherwise I'm a Canadian as well. You'reJesse (1m 12s): Out of the, out of the closet. Out of the closet on the Canadian front that, yeah, that is, that is news to me. Were you born in, in Canada or just citizenship?Walter (1m 22s): Brooklyn.Jesse (1m 23s): Brooklyn, New York. Brooklyn. Okay. That's what I thought. Interesting. Okay. Well, you know, for those that don't know on the podcast, we mainly talk real estate with, as listeners know, we sprinkle in economists. I think you're, you're definitely unique in the sense that some of your thoughts may not be in the mainstream of, of your typical left right kind of political ideology. I, I kind of discovered you in, in high school actually, with, with some of the works that I think you wrote in the seventies, if I remember correctly. And I just think that the, some of the concepts that you talk about touch on real estate, rent control, some of the economic aspects, minimum wage. But for those that that don't know your work, don't know you Walter, maybe you could give a bit of a background, you know, how, what was your journey, you know, become an economist and, and what you do today?Walter (2m 14s): Well, it all started with me and Bernie Sanders. Bernie and I went to high school together for, we overlapped for four years, and we were sort of buddies because we were on the same track team and we ran the same events. I have to tell you, my Bernie Sanders joke, it's not at his expense. Bernie Sanders joke is that Bernie doesn't run away from much, he didn't run away from socialism even before socialism became as popular as it is now.Banks, in part to his efforts, he didn't run away not only for ex-cons voting, but even convicts voting. But there's one person that he ran away from, and that's me. Why? Because we both did the same event about a mile, and his time was about four 30 and I never broke five minutes.

They discuss Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Bill C-63 (aka The Online Harms Act), what powers it gives to the government, what rights it strips from citizens, and why even Americans should be concerned.Bruce Pardy is executive director of Rights Probe, a law and liberty thinktank, and professor of law at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He is a lawyer, academic, columnist, and outspoken critic of the illiberal managerial state, fighting at the front lines of the culture war inside the law. Bruce writes for the National Post, Epoch Times, and the Brownstone Institute, among others, and serves as senior fellow at the Fraser Institute, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, and the Frontier Centre for Public Policy. He has taught at law schools in Canada, the United States and New Zealand, practiced civil litigation in Toronto, and served as adjudicator and mediator on the Ontario Environmental Tribunal. The legal ground, Bruce has written, is shifting beneath our feet. The individual is losing to the collective. An ever-expanding bureaucracy regulates life from cradle to grave, including private behavior and speech, in the name of common good. The law has become discretionary, arbitrary, and unequal. The end of Western liberal civilization, as we have known it, is conceivable. Konstantin Kisin is a Russian-British satirist, social commentator, and co-host of the TRIGGERnometry Youtube show. He is also the author of “An Immigrant's Love Letter to the West,” a Sunday Times bestseller. He has written for several publications, including Quillette, The Spectator, The Daily Telegraph, and Standpoint, on issues relating to tech censorship, woke culture, comedy, and other topics, but he currently publishes articles on his popular Substack. Kisin made headlines in 2018 when he refused to sign a "safe space contract" to perform comedy at a British college and again in 2023 when he participated in an Oxford Union debate on the motion of "This House Believes Woke Culture Has Gone Too Far." His speech at the debate received viral attention and has been seen by over 100 million people around the world.  - Links - 2024 tour details can be found here https://jordanbpeterson.com/events    Peterson Academy https://petersonacademy.com/    For Bruce Pardy: On X https://twitter.com/pardybruce?lang=en  For Konstantin Kisin: TRIGGERnometry Podcast    / @triggerpod   Substack https://konstantinkisin.substack.com/ Twitter https://twitter.com/KonstantinKisin?r...

After the fall of the Soviet Union, a whole host of European countries were faced with a unique opportunity: the chance to free their economy and clean up a corrupt legal system. Of all the ex-Soviet states, few have been as successful as Estonia. Matt Kibbe speaks to Matthew Mitchell, senior fellow at the Fraser Institute, about the peaceful and musical revolution that helped lift Estonia out of poverty and oppression as the country's people embraced the concepts of free markets and personal liberty. Today, this tiny Baltic nation serves as a model for how to get things right, both in terms of casting off the chains of the past and create a free society that empowers citizens to thrive.
