It's Oscar season once again, and like we do every year, we do a deep dive into one of the Best Picture nominees! This time around, Michael Snydel of The Film Stage joins Clint (who's a little stuffy this episode, apologies in advance!) and Jared to talk about Guillermo del Toro's nomination-sweeping fantasy love story The Shape of Water! Set in a Cold War-era America filtered through del Toro's intricate dark-fantasy lens, The Shape of Water follows Eliza, a lovesick mute girl (Sally Hawkins) who falls for an  man-like fish creature (Doug Jones) imprisoned in an American military research facility by the evil Strickland (Michael Shannon). Along with her band of outsiders and misfits, Eliza schemes to break the fishman out of the facility and get him home.  Opinions vary on whether this is one of del Toro's mythic masterpieces or a flawed blend of mish-mashed tones and influences, but it makes for an intriguing discussion all the same. Check out our episode, as well as our custom cocktail and drinking game! (Thanks to our sponsor Simplecast as part of the Chicago Podcast Coop!)

It's that time of year when everyone around you asks you to take place in an Oscar office pool. Well, don't worry. We've gathered together our predictions  and now you can confidently bet the farm...well, maybe not, but we're pretty good at figuring out what Oscar voters are thinking. We even know a few. It's a wide open year and that could make things interesting. Some categories are absolute headscratchers. And will they make a major screw up like last year? How will Jimmy Kimmel do? Oh, and there's "Red Sparrow" - a new spy/action movie directed by her former "Hunger Games" director Francis Lawrence. Is it a worthy movie to release on Oscar weekend? We've got what Jennifer Lawrence has to say about the movie, so listen in!

It's Oscar time! Jonathan Crabb returns this week to talk all about the 2018 Academy Award-nominated films ahead of this Sunday's awards ceremony. "Fan service well done is a good movie." Jordan kicks off the movie discussion with a rant that has been a long time coming: Movie trailers are the worst. After seeing the "Red Sparrow" trailer half a dozen times, does anyone really need to see the movie? Jonathan is a fan of good trailers and talks about the art of giving just enough away to get you interested in the film. He also touches on an upcoming movie he's excited about: "Solo: A Star Wars Story." Our Favorite Best Picture Noms! It's the most wonderful time of the year ... time to analyze the Best Picture nominations and gush or vent accordingly. We all list our favorites and least favorites from this year's eclectic list. Jonathan's favorite was "Get Out," and he wasn't really into "Phantom Thread." Matthias loved "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and was not a fan of "The Post." Jordan fell for "The Shape of Water" and "Lady Bird" but could barely pay attention to "Dunkirk." We also give a shoutout to the most underrated recent trilogy: "Planet of the Apes." The third film in the brilliant Andy Serkis revamp, "War for the Planet of the Apes," is up for Best Visual Effects. Prediction Time: We take turns predicting some of the top awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. Jordan and Matthias have similar predictions, while Jonathan disagrees. We'll see what we got right (and wrong) when the awards are announced on Sunday!
