Terra Incognita: The Adventure Podcast

The third episode of our specialist series, Explore: How To Plan An Expedition, focuses on the reality of funding, and who's paying. Money is one of the least favoured things to talk about when it comes to expedition planning but it's unavoidably essential, as without it, your grand plan is very little more than an idea. In this episode, Matt speaks with Dr Eleanor Drinkwater, Ben Saunders, Tom Allen, and Shane Winser. They go deep into grant applications - how to write them, what to include, and how to review them. They also cover crowdfunding, corporate commercial funding, and even self-funding. They discuss how competitive it can be, how to stand out, and what work remains even when the expedition is over. Dr Eleanor Drinkwater is an entomologist, expedition leader, lecturer and science communicator. Having completed her PhD on invertebrate personality, she is fascinated by both invertebrate behaviour, as well as understanding how humans can work with and cultivate invertebrates in a sustainable and ethical way. She has worked both in the UK and further afield in Peru, Australia, Honduras and French Guiana. She is committed to science communication, and has also co-founded an entomophagy science festival group.Ben Saunders is a pioneering polar athlete and a record-breaking long-distance skier, who has covered more than 6,000km on foot in the Polar Regions. He's broken the record for the longest human-powered polar journey in history, and holds the record for the longest solo Arctic journey by a Briton. He has shared his story with a huge range of people, businesses and organisations, and his focus is now on climate technology investment.Tom Allen has been a full-time traveller, writer and filmmaker for over 15 years. He has undertaken adventurous journeys on 5 continents, runs a long-established adventure cycling website, and now describes himself reluctantly on his social media profiles as a 'self-unemployed creative explorer'. In 2016 he led the RGS-supported Land Rover Bursary expedition to explore and map the first long-distance hiking trail across the Caucasus. The Transcaucasian Trail, as it is now known, has since evolved into a massive international development project which he estimates will take a good decade or so to complete.Shane Winser works for the Royal Geographical Society where she curates the annual Explore symposium and Festival. A zoology graduate, she assisted in the planning and organisation of the RGS's own research programmes to the tropical forests of Sarawak and Brunei, the mountains of the Karakoram, and the drylands of western Australia, Kenya and Oman. She chairs the technical panel for BS 8848: the British Standard for organisers of a wide variety of ventures, including university and academic fieldwork, gap year experiences, adventure holidays, charity challenges and research expeditions. You can find out more about the RGS and use the Explore digital resources by visiting rgs.org/explore, or @rgs_ibg on socials.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Throughout the Fall Conference, the power of translating human potential and wisdom across industries emerged as an overarching theme. Ben Saunders is living proof of how this multidisciplinary collaboration is already moving the engineering world forward. For those unfamiliar, Saunders is the world-renowned polar explorer and was the first person to lead an expedition to the South Pole and survive. He explained to a Fall Conference audience how his experiences make clear that while we often think about technology as microchips and digital devices, the word applies evenly across all contributions of human knowledge. Saunders's expedition to the South Pole took years to plan and four months to complete. To make this dream a reality, he would have to overcome three main types of challenges. Along with commercial challenges (i.e., fundraising, equipment, and leading a team), he faced physical challenges (such as fitness, nutrition, and clothing) and cognitive challenges relating to the physical and mental stress of the journey. When looking back on the mental preparations, Saunders “realized pretty quickly that that was the most important piece because when you're out there, you can never really recover fully from one day to the next,” he said. “You're always getting more and more tired. Every day you wake up and you're just more tired, more tired, more tired in a sort of downward spiral.” The statement resonated perfectly with the realities so many professionals face in today's fast-paced and stressful work environments. That's why Saunders spent years developing a strategy for the extreme mental and physical stress of the journey, including getting support from a well-respected psychologist. For Saunders, “it was vital having that sort of guidance and wisdom—good coaches and mentors and advisors that I trusted.” Now, after spending almost two decades traversing terrains that are arguably the most unforgiving on Earth, he's made a “weird pivot” to sustainable innovation, which seems a perfect fit for his skills and expertise. “I'm enjoying being a kind of catalyst. Like, I'm not a scientist. I don't have mounds of money. But I can raise money [and] I can point it in the right direction,” Saunders said with enthusiasm. “And find extraordinary talent and intellect and IP that I can kind of back, not just with capital but with my experience and wisdom—almost as a coach in some ways.” When asked about his motivations, he said: “when we boil it down, I think that most of human wealth and progress, [as in] most value in business, has been created through extraction…it's clear that trajectory can't carry on. We need to push the limits of sustainable technologies, so that's where I'll be.”

How did "Almighty God" come to be mentioned in the preamble to the Australian Constitution? Why and how did a whole provision (s116) find its way into the constitution setting out the Commonwealth's legislative powers in relation to religion? And what are the states' powers to establish religion and pass other laws relating to religion? Jonathan discusses these questions and much more with constitutional scholar Dr Ben Saunders in this episode of The Political Animals. Ben Saunders is an Associate Professor at Deakin Law School. His principal areas of research interest are constitutional law, the history of federation, and law and religion. I'm joined by Ben Saunders, a record-breaking polar explorer, acclaimed keynote speaker, and climate tech investor. Ben is another incredible person that I connected with on my trip to Antarctica last year and I immediately knew that I wanted to have him on the show to share his story. He is one of three people in history to ski solo to both the North and South poles, he holds the world record for the longest ever polar journey on foot, and has covered more than 4,500 miles (7,242km) on foot in the polar regions since 2001. Ben and I chat about how he's enjoying the process of storytelling, particularly sharing what's happening in the polar regions and behind-the-scenes of what private companies are doing for the climate crisis. We touch on how growing up without a strong male role model gave him a uniquely blank slate and the freedom to pursue his interests, regardless of how outrageous they may have seemed to the people around him. His relationship to his purpose has changed since his first expedition, but his ability to break through his own limits and capacity has not. Ben describes his current mission of exposing the real Antarctica to young people and inspiring them to share the story of the region. The one thing that unites humans on these expeditions is the pursuit of peace and science, and Antarctica is a template for how we can actually get it right. In the latest episode of The Mariner's Mirror Podcast we begin three episodes dedicated to the maritime history of Scotland. In this episode I speak with Ben Saunders, a senior marine archaeologist with Wessex Archaeology, based at their office in Edinburgh, and we talk about the hulks of two X-Craft on the shore at Aberlady Bay, East Lothian. An innovative video has been created to accompany this podcast showing 3D photography of the wreck, overlaid with a 3D model of what the craft would have looked like. The 3D survey is the result of an important project run by Wessex Archaeology. The Covid 19 pandemic put enormous strain on mental health and resulted in the cancellation of projects designed to support the wellbeing of isolated veterans. With funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, Wessex Archaeology ran a training and research project based around two WWII mini submarines in Aberlady Bay, East Lothian. The Aberlady X-Craft project, supported by Breaking Ground Heritage, provided hands-on survey training and produced a condition report of the wrecks; while also inspiring eight individually researched projects, five of which have been taken through to completion, and engaging over 30 veterans. The project is part of Wessex Archaeology's longstanding work using heritage to support mental health and wellbeing.Using 3d models of the wrecks completed through photogrammetric survey as inspiration, the project assisted the volunteers to develop their own research projects. These included the construction of scale models of an X-craft with training in artefact scanning/photogrammetry; research into the loss of HMS Glorious by a relative of one of the casualties, the use of X-Craft in the Far East, the medical conditions that affected submariners; and the assessment of the Fred Bown archive, one of the survivors from K17, a submarine lost in a training accident in 1917 (the Battle of May Island). Ben Saunders is one of the world's leading polar explorers, and a record-breaking long-distance skier who has covered more than 4,300 miles on foot in the Polar Region. His accomplishments include skiing solo to both the North and South poles, and leading The Scott Expedition, the longest human-powered polar journey in history, a 105-day, 1,800 mile round-trip from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again.   Some interesting insights from this episode:  Hear the remarkable story of how he traveled the equivalent of 69 marathons, the distance from Maine to Miami, in frigid temperatures in near whiteout conditions, over the course of 3.5 months.  Preparation entailed both extreme endurance and extreme weight training. He was able to run a 2:55 marathon and deadlift 485 lbs.   The key to staying motivated was to shorten the focus from the ultimate goal to something that felt achievable whether the end of the day or even the end of an hour.  One of his proudest moments on the journey was to make the call to have food delivered during their return. That moment calling for help was when he matured as a leader as he learned to get priorities straight.  In hindsight, he made the mistake of often living too much in the future, thinking that success was defined by a finish line.  The cliché holds true that the journey is way more important than the destination.  Learn how he evolved from needing external validation to having more of an internal compass driving his motivations.  “Self-belief is a malleable human quality. The more time you spend outside your comfort zone, the stronger it becomes.”  “Excellence is having the internal drive to make tomorrow better than today.”

How many people can draw a line in their lives that connects living in the West Bank, yacht racing around the world, doing polar expeditions, and becoming the CEO for a highly successful technology firm?  Probably one - and this week, he joins me on the All Things Risk Podcast to talk risk, digital media, leadership, and much more.  Meet Tony Haile, founding CEO of Chartbeat (www.chartbeat.com), explorer, adjunct Professor, and many other things. The things that Tony has done may, at first glance, seem disparate and unrelated.  However, as you'll soon grasp, the way that Tony looks at them, they are completely connected.  One of the threads that runs through Tony's endeavours is around risk and risk-taking.  Tony has for instance, applied many lessons from his polar expedition days to the world of tech start-ups. Chartbeat, the company Tony led as CEO for seven years is similarly an interesting story - not only because it went from start-up to market leader in its field, but also for what it does.  Chartbeat helps media companies understand how its audience engages with content (as opposed to the blunt instrument of measuring clicks and page views). Tony's work at Chartbeat revealed that in spite of the click bait economy of which we are a part, there is a massive demand for thoughtful and nuanced content.  We talk about this, including the future of digital media and investigative journalism in part of this episode. This all makes for a fun, wide-ranging and very insightful conversation that I am certain you will not only enjoy, but also take away some practical things you can use.  We cover: Tony's background, including studying International Relations and living in the West Bank Palestinian territory; Polar expeditions and working with explorer and endurance athlete Ben Saunders; Lessons in risk management Tony took from the world of yacht racing and polar expeditions and applied to the world of tech start-ups - this part of the conversation will perhaps challenge any preconceptions you might have about tech entrepreneurs being risk-seeing mavericks prone to recklessness; Chartbeat - what it does and how he helped make it a success; Lessons from his time as a CEO; The state of digital media; The future of investigative journalism; Book recommendations - Tony is a avid reader and lists the books he as read each year on his website (www.tonyhaile.com) - this led to an interesting discussion on genes and transhumanism (although we did not have enough time to cover this properly!) And much more!
