Hey Grotto, Lucha is back from the dead! We had a pretty quiet week with 3s being out sick so we have a shorter, no agenda, pod today. We start out talking American baseball cards, then we begin a speculative journey. We get Lucha's thoughts on the topics we covered last week (Quiz and Pepe Drop), then we take some questions from the audience. This leads us into a deeper discussion around lore and correlated series. As always submit your questions here

Are these the kind of staff members small businesses will be welcoming onto their teams or will they learn to operate in a more lean state? Bold statement? Probably not. I think we all recognize that the system is rigged against the individual and geared towards corporate dominance in conjunction with political influence to mold society into an image that works best for their dominance and self interest. And even when it looks like David has a shot against Goliath like during the short squeeze put on Wall Street from a small number of Reddit users, we quickly get smacked back to reality finding that even with power in numbers, its not enough for a society that is controlled by Government and Corporations working hand in hand. Robinhood claimed that it was for the little guy but it was made abundantly clear that they were being controlled by their real customer, the powers that be with the hedge funds who they sell information to. Thus stopping the short squeeze dead in its track and causing the average retail trader to lose big while hedge funds walked away with hundreds of millions of dollars. Week Ending January 29th, 2021What a volatile stock market it was last week, the new crowd headed by the self-claimed top notch experts on Reddit and other social media sites started a war against the established market participants. I feel neither the leaders of such online forums nor the hedge funds will be at a loss when the dust settles, the average investor will end up holding pumped up stocks.Fundamental analysis will never lose against the so called crowd of online communities. I remember a 1929 story when a shoe shiner gave stock tips to Joe Kennedy and Joe being a wise investor decided to get out of the stock market. The present situation is not entirely similar to 1929 circumstances, but investors should be vigilant. The compliance departments of broker dealers should keep track of the symbols which are being pumped up by the social media forums and try to stop or restrict trading in those securities where made up stories about certain stocks do not correlate with underlying fundamentals. Otherwise the similar kind of pump and dump schemes orchestrated by the online chat rooms would be every day's news. I know it's not accurate to call this pump and dump until we have proof of false information being spread by a few with intention to defraud, as everybody knows it’s a speculation for sure at the moment. I think moderators of such online communities should be regulated persons.Jerome Powell reinforced his message that economic outlook remains uncertain after 2 days meeting last week. He also expressed that Fed does not have any intention to taper its purchases at present. As expressed by me last week, I think all the available good news has already been priced in. I am hoping that this meltdown continues next week.

And that's essentially every citizen in the United States. And that's exactly what happened earlier this November when Powell was speaking at a panel discussion on Central Banking. The COVID Shutdowns that swept the nation brought on advancements in technology and companies were quick to find new ways to innovate in ways that would usually takes years to formulate. From there, we jump into taking a look at the credit scoring and how the algorithms are messing up, big time, boosting credit scores for those that likely have trouble paying. Then we uncover the most recent hacks, one in DeFi and the other one with GoDaddy. Finally, onto some speculation, looking to connect the dots on the money. The Fed has stated they are not going to spend time developing CBDC (central bank digital currency) any time soon. The $68 trillion transfer of wealth in America is evaporating amid the economic crisis. The number is staggering but the wealth and private businesses accumulated by the Boomers is starting to show that it may not have the staying power to pass on to future generations. What does this mean to the future of the American Economy as we know it? According to a survey by the Center for New Middle Class, there was a 25% drop in the number of baby boomers who said they are self-employed or own their own business in the second quarter. That impact could have significant repercussions for the economy at large considering that baby boomers own nearly half of privately-held businesses with employees in the U.S., according to Project Equity. That’s 2.34 million businesses with 24.7 million employees and $5.1 trillion in sales, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Did she or didn't she? Of course she did. In late July 2016, Hillary Clinton, in an effort to divert attention from the email scandal that was haunting her presidential bid, directed her campaign to peddle a political narrative that Russia’s suspected hacking and leaking of Democratic Party emails was in furtherance of a conspiracy between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump to swing the election to Trump. Why does it matter now? Because the current Democratic Candidate Joe Biden wants your vote for President this November and the Obama Administration, where he served as Vice President during this time, made a calculated effort to shelter the Clinton Campaign from any wrong doing in an effort for the Democrats to remain in control of the White House. FBI director James Comey held his infamous “exoneration” press conference, which illustrated that there was damning evidence of Clinton’s mishandling of classified information and destruction of government records, and of her promotion of a culture of national-security recklessness at the State Department; but, nevertheless, that the Obama administration would not charge her, even though her conduct violated the literal terms of the espionage statute. Many people with student loans aren't carrying the burden of their debt alone. The mountain of debt weighs down their families, too. "Student loan repayment is really a family affair," says Fiona Greig, director of consumer research at the JPMorgan Chase Institute. The number of people 60 and older with student loan debt has been increasing, with many of those loans taken out by parents and grandparents to help younger family members pay for college. Now a new study by the JPMorgan Chase Institute says nearly 40% of student loan payers are helping someone else pay off their student loans. And 27% of these helpers hold no student loan debt themselves. But it goes beyond Student Loan Debt. This practice applies to a younger generation looking to purchase their first home. 1 in 5 U.S. Homeowners received an average of $39,000 in assistance from parents for down payments on Real Estate. And in 2018 Family/Friends assisted in the purchase of $317 Billion worth of property. While getting assistance like this seems ok on paper, its starting to delay the ability for an older generation to retire. And you have to wonder, will this younger generation be able to do the same for their kids? August job gains were boosted by the temporary hiring of 238,000 workers to complete the 2020 census. The economy has so far recovered less than half of the 22 million jobs that were lost this spring. As of mid-August, more than 29 million people were collecting some form of unemployment benefits. As if the Coronavirus Chaos couldn't get any crazier...Now the Pentagon feels its a good time to confirm that programs have existed for decades to investigate UAPs (or Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) and that videos circulating on the internet of military footage tracking such objects are in fact legitimate. With 2/3 of people believing their Government knows more about UFOs than they let out, it sounds like those concerns are being confirmed. Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid tweeted Monday that Americans "deserve to be informed" about UFO information following the Pentagon's official release of three Navy videos showing "unidentified aerial phenomena." Why it matters: Reid devoted funding in 2007 to a $22 million program to investigate unidentified flying objects. The Pentagon confirmed its existence in 2017. The Navy also confirmed an increase in UFO sightings in 2019. It formalized a new process to allow pilots to report sightings at the time. Officials have clarified that, while UFOs are not necessarily indicative of extraterrestrial life, they do raise concerns regarding advanced aircraft flying near sensitive military facilities and military-controlled ranges. The big picture: The Navy videos were previously published by the New York Times, which interviewed the pilots involved in some of the incidents. They refused to speculate on the origin of the crafts they saw, but one pilot told the Times that "we're here to do a job, with excellence, not make up myths." Why now? In 2010, after analyzing historical cycles of instability, Turchin made a prediction that was published at the time in the journal Nature: America will suffer a period of major social upheaval beginning around 2020. Some were skeptical, Turchin says, because “people did not understand that I was making scientific predictions, not prophecies.” Then 2020 came. Amid a global pandemic—which has so far killed more than 116,000 people in the U.S. and resulted in record unemployment rates—national unrest erupted at the end of May over the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who begged for his life as a white Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Hearing them say now that they were one bad week or month from going under before Covid-19 shocked her. She discovered that, in fact, the lot of it has been a ruse for a while. It’s not just shame that keeps us quiet either. We keep our “failures” close to us because we know, especially in the markets that both Hamilton and I work in – art, books, restaurants – it’s so much about appearance. Is that book or that chef, that artist important? Why should anyone pay for her rent, her studio, her tour? Our pretending we’re not drowning is the proof we have that we might still be worth saving. Our performing stability is one of the few ways that we hope we might navigate the narrow avenues that might still get us out. Sporting "I Got Chipped" T-shirts, some 40 workers at Three Square Market, a firm that makes cafeteria kiosks aimed at replacing vending machines, got tiny rice-sized microchips embedded in their hands. Company officials said it was for convenience, a way for them to bypass using company badges and corporate log-ons to computers. Now, they can just have their hands read by a reader, similar to using a smartphone to pay for goods. The company would like to see payments go cashless, as iPhone users do with Apple Pay. Except in this case, consumers use their hand instead of a smartphone to pay. The chip is not a tracker nor does it have GPS in it, so the boss can't track your movements, company officials say. Still, to those who worry about Big Brother having more control over our lives, Three Square Market President Patrick McMullan says you should, "take your cell phone and throw it away." New Threat to the Economy

Americans are slashing their spending, hoarding cash and shrinking their credit card debt as they fear their jobs could disappear during the coronavirus pandemic. US credit card debt suddenly reversed course in March and fell by the largest percentage in more than 30 years. At the same time, savings rates climbed to levels unseen since Ronald Reagan was in the White House. The dramatic shifts in consumer behavior reflect the unprecedented turmoil in the US economy caused by the pandemic. Although caution is a logical response to that uncertainty, hunkering down also poses a risk to the recovery in an economy dominated by consumer spending. A so-called V-shaped recovery can't happen if consumers are sitting on the sidelines. More than 33 million Americans have filed for initial unemployment claims since mid-March, and economists warn the jobs market won't return to pre-crisis levels for years. More evidence of how the coronavirus pandemic is widening income inequality has emerged after the Federal Reserve announced 40% of households earning less than $40,000 included someone who has lost a job since February. The Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome Powell, released the figure on Wednesday as he called on US policymakers to do more to pull the country out of the economic mire. Hosts Zack Hayes and Phil Hayes breakdown the Guardian's article on the topic in this week's episode of Pure Speculation.

You might feel blindsided by the coronavirus, but warnings about a looming pandemic have been there for decades. Government briefings, science journals and even popular fiction projected the spread of a novel virus and the economic impacts it would bring, complete often with details about the specific challenges the U.S. is now facing. It makes you wonder: What else are we missing? What other catastrophes are coming that we aren’t planning for, but that could disrupt our lives, homes, jobs or our broader society in the next few years or decades? Hosts Zack Hayes and Phil Hayes breakdown Politico's Domestic Threat Assessment in this weeks episode of Pure Speculation.

It's time your your favourite podcast, my friends. And this one's a doozy. Not just because it includes a peek into the Unknown Studio mailbag (which it does); not just because it includes a story from the Christmas Bureau (which it does); and not just because it includes the inaugural Edmonton: A City segment, brought to you by Matt Hirji, Simon Yackulic, Sam Brooks and Jonn Kmech (which it absolutely does)... But it also includes an interview with the founder of the Toonseum, Joe Wos. Scott and I had the opportunity to speak with Joe at Pure Speculation. We actually interviewed him before a live studio audience. We'd love to do a lot more of that. No, my laptop is pooched, which is why there's no image for this show on our feature banner above. That's also why I can't give you a show breakdown. This will all be corrected tomorrow. Meanwhile, I assure you, this podcast will be music to your ears. Enjoy!

On this, the most recent episode of the Unknown Studio (eight! eight episodes! Scott never believed in us!), Mr. Scott C. Bourgeois and I interview Brent Jans, the festival director of Edmonton's Pure Speculation Science Fiction Festival. Also called Pure Spec by nerdy and geeky stalwarts (we love you guys!), the festival is happening for the fifth year this weekend, October 2 to 4 at the Shaw Conference Centre. Events throughout the weekend include panel discussions and keynote addresses with science fiction authors, game developers, artists, and a variety of other sci-fi geniuses; RPGs being played; merchant booths; and more! Scott and I spent an hour with Brent, and honestly, it was enough to convince me to attend the Festival this weekend... In between drinking and seeing Zombieland, of course. Registration is $15 before the event if you purchase from any Happy Harbor location or $20 at the door or by registering online. Also featured in this episode, other than my patented Fast 15 is a dip into the Unknown Studio mailbag. One of our tens of listeners emailed us. You can too!
