Finally, Paul begins to discredit the exact nature of the false teachings in the church in Colossae. In similar ways, we still see these same false teachings today. They come in the form of legalism, false beliefs about the requirements to be a follower of Christ, and ultimately a false (or even self-serving) understanding of who Christ is. These false teachings fail to, as Paul says, “stop the indulgence of the flesh.” Therefore, we must be leery of teachings that only change the externals but do nothing for the transformation of the heart. Pastor Blair continues our sermon series through Colossians: Complete in Christ and highlights the wonderful reality that we've been qualified in God's eyes through Jesus Christ, which means we don't need to submit to human regulations, traditions, and judgment from others.

Why is it that we often find ourselves settling for a cheap substitute instead of the real thing? We're continuing to work through Colossians to unpack how Paul guides the church continually toward the real Jesus and how we can avoid settling for lesser things.
Join us for lessons in Colossians.
The 6th sermon in a series on Colossians: Christ the King Paul continues to expose "the Colossian Heresy" as he reveals that even good former religious rituals are merely a shadow cast by the greater reality: the person and work of Jesus Christ. He encourages Christians to not let Judaizers pressure them into keeping kosher or certain festivals or for pagans to pressure them into asceticism or mystery religions. It’s time to take our eyes off of the shadows (the fake) and focus our eyes on Jesus (the real). Listen as Pastor Jeremy teaches from Colossians 2:16-23 about the shadows to avoid and the substance to pursue: 1. SHADOWS • (v. 18) Mysticism - Watch out for those who downplay Jesus Christ or emphasize external spiritual experiences or angels instead of the person of Jesus Christ. • (v. 16) Legalism – We want our focus to be on Christ instead trying to be justified by our own works and deeds. 2. SUBSTANCE • (v. 17) – Hold fast to Jesus. • Find your identity, worth, meaning, purpose, joy and confidence in Him and Him alone.
Legalism is the human attempt to gain salvation or prove one’s spirituality.

Self-Doubt / Self-Satisfaction / Self-Denial There are so many voices suggesting that behavior, obedience, sacrifice, etc. is what will grant us “true” salvation. However, in Christ we are fully saved, by His grace alone, through His finished work on the Cross; and that should build such love for Him that it drives our behavior, obedience, and sacrifices.
Do you ever find it difficult to stay focused? Doctors say that many cases of ADD or ADHD go undiagnosed. In our series through the book of Colossians, Paul gives the church a giant "finger snap" calling our attention back to focus on Christ alone. It is easy to get distracted from Him. In this message, we look at three belief systems that often creep into the church distracting us from Jesus.

Today we will see the difference our new position should make in our everyday life.
Welcome to The Village Church. We are beautiful and broken people connected in Jesus, extending His love.
Paul warns us not to let others judge us by their human traditions and legalistic rules. We also need to be careful that we do not get pulled away from Jesus Christ by mysticism, asceticism, visions, and other man-made religions that have no power to destroy the sinful flesh.
