Welcome to the season finale of A Cozy Christmas Podcast! Today, we're going to consider Charles Dickens' Christmas Tree, as well as a special announcement for a reading challenge. In 1850 Dickens published a reflection piece for Christmas entitled "A Christmas Tree". And in typical Dickens fashion, he has a lot of words to say about his tree and the memories from his past that it conjures up. Though at times the story is a bit strange, who hasn't occasionally gotten lost in nostalgia while enjoying the lights of their Christmas tree? I also am announcing a group reading challenge for us this year! As you know, I love to read, so I created 12 reading challenges based on Christmas movies. Check out my social medias for the check list or go to www.cozychristmaspodcast.com and you can download the check list there. Every Wednesday I'll be posting about what books I'm reading for the challenge and I'd love to hear from you as well. Take a listen and find out what prompt we're doing first for January! See you all on the socials every Wednesday - let me know if you'll be reading the prompts and which books you pick. Season 3 begins January 24th! See you then... Keep an eye out for a bonus midseason story on or about January 14th... In this episode we take down one final book for the year from the Unicorn Library's shelves and spend some time discussing Kawai Strong Washburn's debut novel, Sharks in the Time of Saviors. This story follows the Flores family, struggling with the impacts of capitalism and colonialism and signs from the supernatural in 1990s/2000s Hawai'i. We discuss what we've learned from this book; how we relate to the story, themes, and characters; and why we think it's a great read for all unicorns, even if you don't have a connection to Hawai'i. Still on the fence about reading it? Here's a taste of the beautiful language: "I could see him there, the waves and tides and gods dragging him around. But I'm in the water, too, I wanted to say. No one's watching to see if I stay afloat." "How long was I stupid enough to believe we were indestructible? But that's the problem with the present, it's never the thing you're holding, only the thing you're watching, later, from a distance so great the memory might as well be a spill of stars outside a windshield at twilight" We also wrap up the year with our happy places, while Rocking Around the Christmas Tree was not either of our picks, it could be a bridge between the two. We also give a brief taste of what we're looking forward to in the new year after the plugs. Happy new year and we wish you a safe and happy 2022. Our guest today is Southern California-based interior designer Naomi Coe. Naomi's award-winning firm, Little Crown Interiors, specializes in designing nurseries and children's rooms. Her book, Your Perfect Nursery, is a step-by-step approach to creating your dream nursery from both a practical and aesthetical approach. Naomi has been featured on Access Hollywood and Entertainment Tonight, as well as in publications like People, The Wallstreet Journal, and countless more. Naomi talks about the importance of walking into a nursery and feeling good, practical placements, safety tips, modern trends, and more! What You'll Hear on This Episode: Trials & Triumphs on windows & doors, making decisions, furnace maintenance, making room for the Christmas Tree, AirBnB odors, shower curtains, tubs, and more! How did Naomi get started in nursery and kids' room design? Naomi's book, Your Perfect Nursery, was born from a challenge to find one resource. How does Naomi recommend starting the nursery design process? Naomi gives us her top tips for crib, window treatment, and earthquake safety. How to choose the right crib. Naomi's tips on choosing the right glider or rocker. What should go on or in reach of the changing table? Tips and tricks for arranging and storing kids' clothing. How to design a room that grows with a child. Why Naomi's book is the perfect baby shower gift or resource for any new parent. Decorating Dilemma Hi (again) Jamie, First of all, I would say paint the actual walls with the paint samples. It'll look very different on the wall than it would on a board; especially white paint. I'm personally a big fan of Chantilly Lace, but it's going to look different in every room and every home. I very much love the painted trim look right now; white walls with slightly darker doors and trim. I think Seapearl or Putty color could be pretty. Good luck with the new build! You're already ahead of Taryn in the process! Mentioned in This Episode: Little Crown Interiors Little Crown Interiors on Instagram Your Perfect Nursery The Schwartz House

Today's show is a bit special ... because it goes live on Christmas day! So I'm doing something a little different with this episode. There are no promotions and only a little bit of learning. How can I not when we have such an expert with us today? Just like last year, Heidi shares an excerpt from her latest book. As well as some behind-the-scenes of her life as an author, her holiday traditions, and even some https://giftbizunwrapped.com/episodes/what-is-storytelling-in-business (storytelling) tips you can use for your business. Although passionate about writing from an early age, Heidi acquired a degree in literature and flirted briefly with a newspaper career, before plucking up the courage to join a creative https://giftbizunwrapped.com/episodes/tomcorson-knowles (writing) class and take her literary ambitions seriously. A lover of vintage paraphernalia and the odd bottle of fizz, she now writes feel-good fiction with heart for Simon and Schuster. Her debut novel, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RM6NV92 (The Cherry Tree Café) was published in July 2015. And since then she has had a further twelve books published, becoming a Sunday Times Bestseller in 2017. Heidi is currently celebrating the release of her 2021 festive title, https://www.amazon.com/Underneath-the-Christmas-Tree/dp/1471195848 (Underneath the Christmas Tree), and writing The Summer Fair which will be published next spring. Storytelling Tips From A Published Author When it comes to writing and storytelling, make it personal. Let people know about the inspiration behind a product that makes it authentic. That will resonate with your audience. Don't ignore the senses. If you've got something that smells good or feels good, that's something you really want to highlight. Add those little details that make things all the more appealing and inviting. Inspiration can come from anywhere. Scribble ideas that come to mind that are going to work in different settings. Listen to the full conversation for storytelling tips, a reading from Heidi's latest book, plus a glimpse into her life as an author! This is a very special holiday edition the Lo Lifer's won't want to miss! Lo is back at the kitchen table to talk with his mama, aka The Queen. Together, they muse over all things Christmas, including traditions that have been in their family for decades. As all the Lo Lifers know, Lo loves Christmas, and every year he celebrates with family traditions that include a Christmas Tree and home decorated in monochromatic decor, hiding the pickle, and 85 pounds of tamales. This year is no different as their family gets ready to pay homage to the late Dukie for a chocolate-brown Christmas. Lo and The Queen talk about the power of sentimental gifts over material ones. They share budget-friendly gift tips that are based on your love language. The Queen shares her sentimental reasons why the tamale recipe is so much more than a recipe. She explains why it can't simply be put down on a piece of paper and Lo opens up about how he has stepped in to learn the tradition that has lasted decades so he can carry the torch and pass it on for generations to come.
