Games have always striven toward the goal of creating believable virtual worlds, but with the recent advancements from Oculus and Sony's Project Morpheus, VR is closer to becoming a reality than ever before. What happens when the world you choose to escape to is populated by your Facebook friends list?
Virtual Reality headsets like the Kickstarter-backed Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus for the PS4 were the talk of GDC last week. Then news dropped like a megaton bomb Tuesday that Facebook bought Oculus Rift. Jen, Max, Robert and Scott all got together for episode number 30 of the Furious Fourcast to discuss the implications of the deal and whether our gaming and entertainment future is wearing virtual reality headsets. We also check in with Robert on what he saw and did while at GDC, whether X-Men: Days of Future Past looks like an X-movie worth seeing and what's up with Microsoft's new reputation system for the Xbox One. We also manage to squeeze in a new Buy, Skip or Wait for some of the latest game and movie releases!
Virtual Reality seems to be the big "it" thing recently. Last week we learned about Sony's Project Morpheus and today we got the bombshell news about Facebook buying Oculus VR. With this in mind, how could we NOT delve into the subject? We discuss whether VR is the true next step in gaming or if it's another fad like 3D and motion controls. We also discuss some of the original content posted on the site including our reviews of inFAMOUS: Second Son, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and The Witcher #1 and our editorials about The Last of Us film adaptation, Metal Gear Solid 3 and why Final Fantasy X-2 deserves more love. We also discuss Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Peace Walker because we really can't go one week without talking about the MGS franchise on the ShockCast. This week I was joined by Staff Writers Ryan Meitzler and Jorge Jimenez. Thanks as always to @elblanconino for our custom intro and outro tracks.
