Final Fantasy X is beloved by many fans of the franchise for a reason. It's full of memorable characters, gorgeous locations, one of the best battle systems in the series, and while it doesn't shy away from going to some very dark places, underneath it all is a story about friendship, love, loss, and acceptance. It's also a game that's responsible for making an entire generation sob as the credits rolled. Join us to find out why we think that Final Fantasy X deserves to be remembered AND played! My special guest co-host for this episode is none other than my loving partner, Twitch Streamer GamerGorlGabs! This is her favorite game of all-time, and I can't wait for you all to hear her stories and recollections from her childhood. So come and sit yourself down by the beach. The sun is setting in Zanarkand, but the fire is warm. Tidus, Yuna, Wakka, Lulu, Auron, Rikku, and Kimahri are waiting for you to join them for an adventure that you'll never forget... We play through Chapter 3 of Final Fantasy X-2, where we lose patience with the game's disjointed and shallow storytelling.
We play through Chapter 2 of Final Fantasy X-2, which highlights that the tertiary characters of Spira are not that compelling.

We play Final Fantasy X from the first save point on an Airship to just before entering the Calm Lands. Along the way, we discuss the most romantic cutscene ever animated, some much more awkward cutscenes in Bevelle, and the disappointingly shallow portrayal of Yevon leadership.

We play Final Fantasy X from Macalania Woods to the first save point on an Airship. Along the way, we discuss the way characters talk around painful truths, what Tidus offers Yuna, and the odd pacing of cutscenes and dungeons.
Hello Adventurers! Wait, is that how it goes for this? Does it even matter? Who knows! So this episode, theoretically a "bonus" episode, is actually a product of two years worth of work. In 2024, over the course of two different panels at MomoCon and KamiCon HAI (RIP), we had panels where we attempted to rank all the mainline Final Fantasies (plus two bonus games). As we had different people on each panel, we of course had two different rankings! What was a podcast to do? Well, all six of us got together to record One Final (Fantasy) Podcast to determine the final ranking. This is that episode! PS You may notice that we have not indicated if this is an OSMcast! or a Carbuncle Chronicle episode. That's because it's both! Almost all of the OSMcast! side, and all of The Carbuncle Chronicle side are in this, AND it covers Final Fantasy XIV to boot, so it made sense to just call it an episode for both. OSMnotesWhoo boy! This was a real pain to edit! But Basil also got real extra with the audio and music for the episode this time, so we hope you enjoy the half a year he took at poking and prodding this thing into Listenable Audio™. Support my work on Patreon- https://patreon.com/realdavejackson Join the Tales from the Backlog Discord server- https://discord.gg/kAqSBb6jH2 Buy me a coffee on Ko-fi- https://ko-fi.com/realdavejackson There is a certain type of atmospheric (usually) indie game that gets praised for its tone, vibes and emotional impact, but sometimes criticized for underbaked or limited gameplay mechanics. Walking sims used to get the brunt of this, but the same could also be said for games like Sword of the Sea director Matt Nava's most famous works, Journey and Abzu. Sword of the Sea may not be an intentional response to those criticisms, but it does add more "involved" gameplay into the fold, incorporating sand surfing and tricks into your verb set. It then begs the discussion- on paper, adding more involved gameplay is good, right? But is that always the case? Are digital currencies like Robux and V-Bucks ruining the magic of Christmas morning? In this episode of New Dad Gaming, Trevor and Jeff discuss the struggle of buying gifts for kids who only want digital skins, the sadness of not having physical games to unwrap, and the controversial reason Jeff is considering banning Roblox from his house entirely. Plus, Trevor is moving his family to Colombia for the winter! We break down the logistics of traveling with gaming gear. Is it better to pack a PS5, an Xbox Series S, or just buy a Steam Deck? We also touch on handling bad grades during the holidays—do you ground your kids from gaming over Christmas break?
This episode is all about the games that hit players with emotional gut punches. You get 50 minutes of nice preamble with returning guest, indie developer Lucy Blundell, then 1 hour+ of our combined 15 top emotional moments in games. After the 50-minute mark, this episode features spoilers (some light, some heavy) for these games: Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Final Fantasy X, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Final Fantasy VII (and the remakes), Botany Manor, Ori and the Blind Forest (just the intro), The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Fable 2, What Remains of Edith Finch, Halo: Reach, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.But...most of it is pretty topline, and it's well worth a listen. We play Final Fantasy X from the beginning to just before boarding the ship to leave Besaid. Along the way, we discuss behind-the-scenes production information, how FFX responds to 8 and 9, and the welcome return of untimed turn-based battles.

And while I've played some GREAT PS2 games for the podcast, God of War II might just be the best of the bunch.I've loved the modern God of War games, and whenI finally played the OG a few years ago I thought it was really solid. I've been looking forward to diving into the rest of the series ever since, and hey hell, the sequel did not disappoint. In my opinion, this game raises the bar in every way from the first game. Better story, better graphics, MUCH better pacing, and more incredible boss fights. I don't even mind the reliance on QTEs (minus the Zeus fight, which is a little cheap). My guest this week is our resident Stpd Mnky, my buddy Daniel. He was there for the original God of War episode, and he's back for round 2 to help me remember the names of all these stupid Gods and to help me sing the praises of just a fantastic game. He'll be back for part III, and I can assure you it won't take another 4 years to get there. And before we take on the Gods, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, a new game collector asks for a little advice. Do 'spiritual successor' games ever live up to expectations? And am I planning on picking up any games on Black Friday??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 PS2 heavyweights: Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, and GTA San Andreas.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 2001's Pikmin. We set the game in its time and then spend a lot of time talking about putting Nintendo's spin on the RTS on a console. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: The first few days Issues covered: a well-trod year, some MMO history, the GameCube at LucasArts, playing PC vs console, playing PC RTSes of the time, history with Pikmin, keeping an eye on Nintendo making and entering genre spaces, making a thing on controller first rather than jamming in a KBM game, Tim talks about his favorite controller again, inspirations, being embodied in the world vs the god's-eye view, the simplicity of the ship pieces and setup, Nintendo's open world game, meteors vs meteoroids, the puzzle RTS, making the environment more of the enemy than the creatures, lightly building an army, trading pikmin for time vs the heavy pieces, task-based challenges, spreading your army but limitations due to movement and level design, the Forest's Navel, moving to avatar-based RTSes and MOBAs, wanting to play the prototypes, forks in strategy games this year, the simplicity of verbs due to Olimar's centrality, limiting your verbs due to the controller, the cognitive overload of the PC RTS, diversions into Valve, where we're playing, letting go of accuracy and min/maxing, chunky buttons. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Calvin & Hobbes, Reed Knight, Halo: Combat Evolved, GTA III, Silent Hill 2, Ico, Civ III, Anachronox, Animal Crossing, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney, Devil May Cry, MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, Final Fantasy X, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Super Smash Melee, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, Jak & Daxter, Game Boy Advance, Advance Wars, Max Payne, Black & White, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, Matt Firor, Zenimax Online Studios, Shigeru Miyamoto, Eternal Darkness, Baldur's Gate II, Andrew Kirmse, StarCraft, Blizzard, Halo Wars, Ensemble Studios, Microsoft, Homeworld, Paul Pierce, Haden Blackman, Behind the Magic, Starfighter (series), Republic Commando, Nintendo64, Warcraft (series), Legend of Zelda, Super Mario 64, Splatoon, Metroid Prime, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron, GoldenEye, Nintendo Switch, Deadly Premonition, Blade Runner, Alien, Star Wars, X-Files, Twin Peaks, Breath of the Wild, The Witcher III, Assassin's Creed, Command & Conquer (series), Company of Heroes, Orcs Must Die, Dynasty Warriors (series), Calamity Nolan, Satoru Iwata, Peter Molyneux, Populous, Total Annihilation, DotA, Valve, IceFrog, Chet Faliszek, Wii, Chris Hecker, Outer Wilds, Far Cry 2, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. A quintessential flawed game that everyone should try, Asura's Wrath overcomes its bad combat and dated approach to player engagement by just simply being cooler and more hype than basically every other game. For me, music is one of the core components that contributes to the enjoyment, and engagement, of a video game title, and this episode is our latest deep dive into some of the classic soundtracks from those games. In today's episode, we'll look specifically at the music, and story, of Final Fantasy X, as I'm joined by our resident FFX sponsor, Iso! This one is a little bit different from our standard Sounds of the Classics episodes, in that we'll be diving really deep into the story and lore of Final Fantasy X, so if you haven't played that particular epic title yet, be warned - there will be spoilers here. For those who have experienced the game before, though, this will hopefully be a comforting return to the world of Spira, as we listen to a bunch of songs, and discuss the amazing narrative, of Final Fantasy X. I recently played the Pixel Remaster version for the first time, so I wanted to give Cecil and friends another round of RTG.I don't disagree with anyone that says Final Fantasy VI is the superior game, but IV isn't without its charm. I love the characters, betrayals, and combat system, and personally I like the linear party management of this one better to future entries where you can mix and match as you please. It's really wild to see how far JRPGs have come since Golbez's started robbing jewelry stores, and I think FF IV deserves its flowers for helping the series evolve from its basic NES counterparts.Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast joins me this week and we both geeked out pretty hard over this game. A couple dungeons (Dark Elf) and characters (Spoony Bard) got under our skin, but at the end of the day I think we agree that this is a must-play for fans of the genre, and a great place for someone new to Final Fantasy to get their feet wet. And before we argue with Tellah, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what the next big trend in gaming is going to be? What Mario moment blew my mind the most as a kid? And where doI stand on silent protagonists in games?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too!
