In this episode we discuss Kojima's response to Konami's attempt to make a Metal Gear sequel without him and how, in so doing, established the baseline for what "stealth games" would become. We also compare its gameplay to the more expansive Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to show how it tries to force the player into a near paranoic sense of hyperawareness.

The game dudes cram their jumpkick spam in Konami's 1990 Nintendo Entertainment System port of the all-timer arcade beat ‘em up TMNT joint, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game. This week on The Free Cheese, don't drink the tea on Mt. Tigerwolf. We wander the world of Suikoden to collect the 108 Stars of Destiny and save the world. After years of hearing the fan adoration of the series, we finally see what Konami's exploration into the role-playing game has to offer. We discuss the little things that make Suikoden great, like its snappy menus and combat, as well as how much story is packed into just 20 hours of gameplay.
Read transcriptDust off your cowabunga collection and prepare your fists for some serious turtle-powered mayhem, because this week on Play Comics we're diving shell-first into TMNT: Mutant Melee, the 2005 arena-based fighting bonanza that took the 2003 animated series and asked the most important question: what if we just got all the turtles, their friends, AND their enemies into one room and let them beat the absolute snot out of each other? Developed by Konami for PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC, this isn't your typical one-on-one fighter—it's more like if Smash Bros and Power Stone had a shell-covered baby and that baby knew all of Splinter's teachings. Joining us for this body-slamming brawl is the incomparable Tommy Proffitt from Distant Echoes and Lee Carvallo's Podding Challenge, a podcast wizard who understands the intricate art of dissecting character-based chaos and canon coherence like few others can. Plus being able to bring his signature blend of gaming nostalgia and comedic precision to help us determine if this colorful chaos simulator managed to capture the spirit of its source material or if it swung its nunchucks at empty air. Together, we'll navigate the treacherous waters of Last Man Standing mode, contemplate why anyone thought having 22 playable characters was a good idea, and investigate whether the game's holiday-themed cosmetics (seriously—set the date to December 25th and watch the turtles rock Santa hats) are feature or bug. Learn such things as: What does it say about a game when its best feature might legitimately be the ability to unlock the original arcade game inside it? What's the difference between a party fighter and a fighting game that doesn't know what it wants to be? Can the 2003 cartoon's tone can survive being translated into “everyone fights everyone all the time? And so much more! This week on the Boss Rush Podcast: Corey Dirrig, LeRon Dawkins, and Patrick Klein dive into how two iconic franchises—Grand Theft Auto and Fallout—remain forever rooted in American culture. Rockstar's Dan Houser and Bethesda's Todd Howard both reaffirm that their series simply wouldn't work outside the U.S., with GTA's satirical take on “Americana” and Fallout's atomic-age paranoia defining their worlds. The crew also breaks down Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's comments that Xbox's biggest rival isn't PlayStation but TikTok, as the gaming industry now battles for players' attention rather than console dominance. Plus, new data shows remakes vastly outpacing remasters in revenue on PS5, proving players crave fully reimagined classics like Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill 2. The Nintendo Switch edges toward breaking DS sales records, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond's latest trailer amps up the hype ahead of launch, and Hideo Kojima reacts to learning that Konami once rejected a Matrix game pitch. All this and more, this week on The Boss Rush Podcast!Follow our Hosts:Corey Dirrig, Founder of Boss Rush Media and the Boss Rush NetworkLeRon Dawkins, VP of Technology and Culture at Boss Rush NetworkPatrick Klein, Games Manager at Boss Rush NetworkJoin the Boss Rush Community: Join the Boss Rush Network Community DiscordFollow Boss Rush Network: Follow Boss Rush Network on X/Twitter, Bluesky, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, and InstagramSupport Boss Rush Network:Support Boss Rush on Patreon and buy merch on our Store. An old piece of games industry lore has recently reemerged, and it has people wondering about a tantalizing what-if. Back in 1999, The Matrix hit theaters, and the co-creators of the film happened to have been huge fans of Hideo Kojima, himself a year removed from the launch of Metal Gear Solid. And, as was reported at the time, there was potential that Konami would allow Kojima to pursue a licensed Matrix game post-MGS. A lot of new information has since emerged about what did and didn't happen here, and it makes for a great conversation starter. So let's lean into it, shall we? Our conclusion: Perhaps Kojima doing MGS2 instead of a Matrix game means he likely dodged a bullet (pardon the pun). Other news this week includes some quiet updates seemingly being made to PlayStation Portal's functionality, leaks from Bluepoint's cancelled God of War game, the most recent China Hero Project title in the form of Loulan: The Cursed Sand, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Following Freedom Wars, Patapon, and Everybody's Golf, what should Sony's and Bandai Namco's next collaborative re-release be? Do PC players have any reason to invest in the modern PlayStation ecosystem? Will the culture war consume Naughty Dog's Intergalactic? Does Colin type so fast that his keyboard smokes? On September 26, 1998, a video game made its debut in Japanese arcades. It was over seven feet tall and weighed just over 900 pounds. It had no characters, no story, no quests to fulfill or bosses to beat. What it had was a metal platform on which you were supposed to stand, put your feet into the right place at the right time, and dance. Join two music critics, long-ago players, and Sota Fujimori fans as they take you on the astonishing journey through the artists, influences, and innovators of Dance Dance Revolution, a game two and a half decades in the making and still going -- in homes, arcades, and expos. From its unexpected appearance to its social heyday to its reappearance in the American market, DDR has taken many forms -- not all of them sanctioned by Konami. It has spawned community, creativity, competition, lawsuits, 1,000+ songs that range from wacky to tacky to beautiful, and yes, a lot of dancing. While we were all leaning on the back bar, working up a sweat, DDR managed to change the world. Jessica Doyle has a Ph.D. in city planning and a love for writing about the connections between pop music, globalization, and the built environment. She cares for her family in the Atlanta suburbs. With practically every “important” PlayStation 2 game being remastered, remade, and reimagined, it wasn't a surprise when Konami announced Metal Gear Solid Delta. The question wasn't “would it exist?”, but “should it exist?” This week, The Besties discuss why Metal Gear Solid 3 benefits from a high-definition, low-tweak update. And they debate just how loyal a remake should be to its source material. Get the full list of games (and other stuff) discussed at www.besties.fan. Want more episodes?
