This almost two hour video, is my strange attempt at understanding how the 1998 video game, METAL GEAR SOLID, for PlayStation (and later for Microsoft Windows) managed to change the landscape on video game industry. Indeed all of the METAL GEAR series caused an impact on the medium, that we still feel to this day.. The video which I'm reacting at, explains this fundamental question... The METAL GEAR series is famous for being the first to enter the "stealth" category as well as its long cinematic scenes, complex plots and its exploration of the nature of politics, wars, censorship, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, loyalty, reality, subjective vs. universal "truths" and many other philosophical themes, in addition to frequently breaking down the fourth wall. The first game in the Metal Gear series was released in 1987 for the MSX2, with an inferior conversion for the NES. In 1990, its sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, was released. With the emergence of the fifth generation of consoles, Hideo Kojima managed to use the potential of the PlayStation to create Metal Gear Solid with exceptional 3D graphics (for the time) and voiceovers in all languages. After MGS came its sequels Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for Playstation 2, Xbox and PC, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for PlayStation 2. A PlayStation 3 version of the series was released in June 12, 2008, by Kojima Productions, called Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, a spin-off with Raiden, was developed for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Windows platforms. Its sequel Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released on September 1, 2015, being the eighth canonical title in the Metal Gear series and the sixth within its fictional chronology. The game serves as a sequel to Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, but its story predates the events of the original Metal Gear game. It was one of the first games, if not the first, to emphasize progressing without being detected by enemies, avoiding as much as possible to confront them. Many of the things that would become hallmarks of the series already appear in Solid Snake's first mission, such as the radio codec for communication with superiors, to clarify doubts about the mission, or even the cardboard box . A version of this same game was made for the NES in 1988, however, with 69 lines of text less and some changes in the story. A sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, was released in 1990 for MSX2 computers, but only on the Japanese market. Metal Gear 2 had important additions to the series, as well as a much more elaborate story full of revelations. After that, the Metal Gear series only returned in 1998, under the name of Metal Gear Solid, for the Sony PlayStation, adapting the gameplay of the first two games to a 3D environment. While the first two games were only relatively successful, Metal Gear Solid was a bestseller, with over 15 million copies worldwide. Several games tried to copy its formula, which made the Metal Gear brand one of the flagships of the Konami company. Metal Gear Solid had two sequels for the PlayStation 2: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in 2001 and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in 2004, each one further enhancing gameplay and telling more of the history of the Metal Gear universe. In March 2006, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence was released, with 2 discs, containing the same game as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but with a new camera, which allows full and free vision to the player. Also added more features and online mode, where a player can play against others over the Internet. Forssell also wrote the lyrics for "Sins of the Father," performed by Donna Burke and “Quiet's Theme,” performed by Stefanie Joosten. Kiefer Sutherland joins Festival Artistic Director Cameron Bailey for an intimate discussion about his stellar career, from his formative years in Toronto and his breakout role in Daniel Petrie's acclaimed Canadian film The Bay Boy, through Hollywood stardom and his Golden Globe-, Emmy- and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning work on television's 24, to his acclaimed performance in Forsaken, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. Kiefer Sutherland was born in England and raised in Toronto. A film star since the 1980s, he gained his most recent international acclaim for his lead role as Jack Bauer on television’s 24 (06-10), winning a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for best actor in a drama series. He reprised the role in the miniseries 24: Live Another Day (14). Sutherland has been acting professionally since he was a teenager and made his lead debut in Daniel Petrie’s feature The Bay Boy (84), which earned him a Genie Award nomination for best actor. It always seems to happen this way: We’ll go months without any big releases and then BAM, we’re suddenly inundated with a flood of games. This week alone has seen the release of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and will also see the release of inFAMOUS: Second Son. What’s a gamer to do with all of these games to play? We also discuss what makes a game a “system seller” and what games have gotten us to buy a particular console. On top of that we also dive into some gaming news, in particular, the recent exodus of producers and executives from certain game studios/publishers. In the midst of the Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes controversy over the length of the game, the guys use the middle segment to discuss game length vs. game price and if your experience should be affected by the two. Current games discussed include TxK, Double Dragon Neon, Sly 4 Thieves in Time, and, for some reason, Spongebob: Truth or Square. Also, Luke forgets how to speak words good.
The New York Videogame Critics Circle Awards were held this week, and DualShockers was in attendance, along with our very own Jorge Jimenez, who is a member of the circle and was a presenter at the awards. That being said, we spoke about the awards and our reactions to them.
