This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Human trafficking occurs in every state and is vigorously prosecuted here in Utah. On the prevention side is the 3Strands Foundation, led in Utah by Terry Palmer, who is here with more. TERRY PALMER: One strand of string can be easily broken, but three strands woven together are strong. At the 3Strands, we bring together the three strands of employment, education, and engagement to strengthen the fight against human trafficking and exploitation. One of the key strands is education and through our PROTECT program, Utah educators are trained to identify physical signs and behaviors that might indicate a student is being victimized. Participants are also equipped with the resources needed to report cases of exploitation and help connect victims with services. We also offer age-appropriate curriculum to students to help prevent the crime before it starts. Students are taught to identify abusive tactics and signs of exploitation that occur both online and in person. In Utah, over 50,000 school staff have taken the PROTECT program and we look forward to teaching tens of thousands of students this year through this Utah State border Education approved training. DEREK MILLER: The FBI estimates that more than 100,000 children in the United States are victims of human trafficking. To join the fight, search the internet for the 3Strands Foundation. I talk with Terry about her work to educate children, teens, educators and parents about the dangers of human trafficking. Yes, it's happening in Utah. And everywhere else. After years of work with non-profit organizations dealing with youth homelessness, Terry Palmer learned about human trafficking during a service project, where a trafficker approached and tried to groom her 14-year-old daughter. “He seemed really nice” stated Terry's daughter, after the project, “if I'd been homeless, I would have gone with him”. After researching the vulnerabilities of homeless youth and young adults, Terry went to work for Backyard Broadcast, a youth peer-to-peer education, and prevention program. Terry is a member of the Utah Trafficking In Persons (UTIP) Committee, currently chairing the Youth Subcommittee. She is also a founding board member of Aspen Magdalene House, a home for women who are survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Terry attended the University of Utah studying Business-Finance before moving to the Bay Area, where she worked for Bank of America. She moved back to Utah to help care for her mother and raise her three children, Ashton (28), Madison (25), and Preston (20). She worked as the local service coordinator for Youthlinc and has served in several capacities with the Utah Parent Teacher Association. She also serves on the Ulster Project Board. Terry has been with 3Strands Global Foundation for two years. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/peri-kinder/support
Our guests in an unrecognisable Johnny Blues Bar (from 1 hour 7 mins) are Terry Palmer and Richie Purdy. The lads discuss their eventful careers, European games in Turkey and Poland, soulless Santry and Rico's rants. Terry talks about supporting the club with his Dad, winning Player of the Year, not getting paid, being forced out of the club by Roddy Collins and controversially signing for Bohs. Richie remembers his Dundalk and Derry days, coming back from a bad injury, scoring a brace against Bohs as a makeshift centre-forward but also his costly own goal against them. His two sons Daniel and Richard went on to play for the Hoops. At the start of the show we have our Sligo review and thoughts on the Member's Meeting before Mick McCarthy and Eoghan Rice select wingers for the All-Time XI.
