Understand the financial and legal challenges in LGBTQ+ health care, including HIV treatment and gender-affirming surgery. NerdWallet's Sean Pyles and Sam Taube delve into the intricate financial and legal issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community regarding their health care. They start by exploring the struggle to prevent and treat HIV, focusing on the effectiveness and financial burden related to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and highly effective antiretroviral treatment (HEART). Sam speaks with Tim Horn, a director of the public health systems team at the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors, or NASTAD, about these drugs and available resources for those dealing with these expenses. The discussion isn't just about costs, but also shines a light on the barriers and shares resources. Sam then discusses the high cost of gender-affirming care for transgender individuals. He speaks with Andrea Romero, a licensed financial advisor based in New Orleans, about how costs can start accumulating even before hormone therapy or surgery, including expenses related to therapy sessions, hair removal, binders or gaffs, and wardrobe changes. She also addresses the high costs of gender-affirming surgery, health insurance coverage, and resources and financial strategies that can help people manage these costs. In their conversation, the Nerds discuss: LGBTQ+ health care costs, financial challenges, legal struggles, gender-affirming surgery, HIV prevention, treatment of HIV, pre-exposure prophylaxis drug assistance programs (PrEP DAPs), highly effective antiretroviral therapy (HEART), insurance coverage, patient assistance programs, copay assistance programs, state government programs, cost of transitioning, aesthetic treatments, hair removal, costs associated with gender-affirming care, trans health care costs, insurance coverage, and financial strategies. The Washington Huskies are about to play their sixth game of the 2019 season, so we're getting a better sense week-by-week about the collective personality of the team, as well as the players that make them go. In talking with Washington Defensive Line Coach Ikaika Malloe and junior defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, we got to know a little bit more about the guys they call the 'twins' - Tuli Letuligasenoa and Sam Taimani. And after speaking with junior defensive back Elijah Molden, you see just how competitive their room is, how the challenge to win the 'best hands in the room' in practice crosses over to production the field during games. We also talked with Washington Linebackers Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Bob Gregory to get a sense for how the veteran nature of his starters - Brandon Wellington and Kyler Manu - has helped them so far this year, as well as when the moment was for redshirt sophomore placekicker Peyton Henry when everything came together, and how true freshman Tim Horn has already helped the kicking group as a whole. The Washington Huskies kick off the 2019 season at noon against one of the top FCS programs in the country, Eastern Washington, a team which played in the FCS National Title game back in January. Heading into the game there are quite a few storylines that fans and the media have been talking about. How does Washington's offense transition after four seasons with quarterback Jake Browning and tailback Myles Gaskin now gone? Does the defensive line have what it takes to keep Eastern Washington's explosive offense in check? Will the Huskies employ a spy to keep an eye on Eagles quarterback Eric Barriere? How many of the talented true freshmen will play this week and will they play all season? The last two times the Huskies played the Eagles, both at Husky Stadium, the Dawgs were pushed to the brink, winning 59-52 in overtime back on September 6, 2014, in Chris Petersen's first home game as the head coach with the Dawgs. In 2011, the Huskies barely held off the Eagles, eking out a 30-27 win as Desmond Trufant intercepted a pass in the endzone on the final play of the game to secure the win. Will this be a repeat of those results? The stress of that may be too much for Husky Nation to bear. One exciting thing about the start of any season is projecting which true freshmen may play in week one and which freshmen may play enough to burn their redshirts. We know that Tim Horn and Cameron Williams, both of whom are listed as starters will likely play more than the four-game maximum, but other players, like Asa Turner, Trent McDuffie, and Puka Nacua may all play enough to burn their redshirts, but at the very least, Saturday will be their first taste of big-time college football and that's exactly why they signed their letters-of-intent. In today's DawgmanRadio Podcast, Kim Grinolds, Scott Eklund, and Chris Fetters touch on those subjects as well as others as they give you something to whet your appetite as you enjoy your pregame festivities... Tim Horn paints full-time and lives in the the small town of Fairfax where he is drawn to the everyday scenes of the rural areas in Marin and Sonoma Counties — the old buildings that have evaded development, the workings of ranch life, the old cars and trucks that continue on, or sometimes simply the play of light and shadow across planes of weathered color. Horn wants to create paintings that tell his story, that express his observations, “paintings that feel 100% Me”.
