Episode 321 Humans live a lot longer than other primates - and much of that is down to our immune system. But there's a price we pay for the capacity to fight off infections: inflammation. Chronic inflammation is to blame for a range of health issues, especially those related to older age. And now research has revealed exactly why inflammation is good for longevity but bad for health. Find out how proteins called death-fold domains often malfunction - and what this could mean for the future of drug development. Bigger than the Eiffel Tower and closer than the moon - the asteroid Apophis will skim past Earth in 2029 and will be visible to the naked eye. Don't worry, astronomers assure us it will NOT hit us. But it could be a good testbed for NASA's asteroid deflection technology, helping us to prepare for more dangerous space rocks in the future. With two major space agencies due to visit Apophis - what will we find? If you thought there was nothing new to learn about the extinction of the dinosaurs, think again. Something we hadn't yet considered was the impact dinosaurs had on the ecosystem. Given they were so massive, dinosaurs made wide-ranging changes to the planet's landscapes, such as shifting rivers. So when they were wiped out, there were huge knock-on effects, which researchers have now been examining.  Chapters: (00:00) Intro (00:41) The evolutionary price we pay for longer lives (13:47) The asteroid coming very close to Earth (26:42) How dinosaurs shaped their ecosystem Hosted by Rowan Hooper and Penny Sarchet, with guests Alison George, Alex Wilkins, Sam Wong and Richard Binzel. This week on Holly Randall Unfiltered, I sit down with one of the most fascinating performers I've ever met. Best known in the adult world as gay performer Reese Rideout, this industry chameleon is now stepping into a new persona: Dom Cruise. Dom has been in the business for over 20 years, and he takes me through his wild ride: from being scouted at a bodybuilding competition, to shooting with Playgirl back in the days of film, to navigating the slippery slope of gay-for-pay as a straight man. We talk about the homophobia that plagued the industry back then, how he learned to “thrust to pop,” and why twinks were always easier than bears. Dom doesn't hold anything back—yes, we even get into his supplement obsession and the science behind his microscope-tested loads. We also cover the stigma around masculinity, the mental gymnastics it took to perform scenes outside his comfort zone, and how the gay side of porn often paid better than the straight side. Dom shares how OnlyFans changed the game, why he's stepping into straight scenes now, and how his wife supports him while helping manage his career. On top of that, he's building a mainstream acting career with upcoming films like Crystal and Apophis 2029, plus a campy blood-soaked thriller called Killer Clown Girls (which, yes, lets me admit my angry clown fetish on air). This episode is part porn history, part confessional, and part insane Hollywood tale—exactly why I love doing this show.Support our show by supporting our sponsors! No more trial and error. https://liferx.md/ designs a weight loss plan that works for YOUR body and lifestyle. During re-entry over the Utah Test and Training Range, a critical scare occurred: the drogue chute, meant to stabilize the capsule at 100,000 feet, failed to deploy on time. Dante Lauretta, recalling the Genesis mission's parachute failure, endured three desperate minutes until the main chute deployed at 60,000 feet, signaling mission success. The sample was successfully recovered. OSIRIS-REx was then rebranded OSIRIS-APEX, handed over to Dante's former student and now assistant professor, Danny Dea Justina. The mission continues to explore another near-Earth asteroid, Apophis, carrying forward Mike Drake's vision of training future leaders in planetary science. 1958

On April 13, 2029, an asteroid named Apophis will pass closer to Earth than our communication satellites. For the first time in human history, millions of people will watch a mountain-sized space rock race across the night sky. NASA says we're safe, but Apophis is just the beginning. Scientists estimate 25,000 city-killer asteroids cross Earth's orbit, and they've only found half of them. The other 13,500 remain completely hidden, somewhere in the darkness of space. Every three days, fragments from ancient comets bombard our planet. Just 12,800 years ago, a cosmic impact reset human civilization and triggered a freeze that lasted over a thousand years. The evidence is buried in rock layers across four continents. Today, we have the technology to fight back, but time is running out. The question isn't whether another impact will happen—it's whether we'll be ready when it does. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-yXhTmSSro

The OSIRIS-APEX mission, an extension of the wildly successful OSIRIS-REx mission, is set to rendezvous with Asteroid 9942 Apophis in April 2029. This mission takes full advantage of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, which still has plenty of fuel and is totally healthy after delivering samples from Asteroid Bennu to Earth on 24 September, 2023. OSIRIS-APEX will closely observe Apophis as the asteroid makes a remarkably close flyby of Earth, coming within 32,000 kilometers (20,000 miles)  – closer than some Earth-orbiting satellites. The mission's primary objectives are to study how Earth's gravitational pull affects the orbit of Apophis, its spin, and surface features. However, the mission is in peril. The proposed Presidential Budget Request for Fiscal Year 2026 budget calls for the cancellation of OSIRIS-APEX, despite its low cost and the scientific value it offers as an extended mission using an already existing and proven spacecraft. On this episode of Talking Space, we're joined by Dr. Dani Mendoza DellaGiustina, Principal Investigator for the OSIRIS-APEX mission and Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. We'll delve into the mission's goals, the reasons given behind its potential cancellation in the 2026 NASA Budget, and the options available should the 2026 budget be approved by Congress, a budget that cancels this ambitious mission. Guest: Dr. Dani Mendoza DellaGiustina Host: Gene Mikulka Additional information on the 2026 NASA Budget via NASA  Advocacy Resources from the Planetary Society

Progress has been made in our search for alien life. So announced a team of scientists from Cambridge university last week who, using a powerful space telescope, have detected molecules which on Earth are only produced by simple organisms. All in all, it's been a busy week for space science. And all against a backdrop of a US government request to cut NASA's funding. The proposals would need to be approved by the Senate before any cuts are made. But scientists and journalists are asking what it could mean for the future of space science around the world. Science journalist Jonathan Amos and space researcher Dr Simeon Barber discuss.Professor of Planetary Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Richard Binzel updates the programme on plans to learn from an asteroid called Apophis, due to fly past us in four years time. Back on Earth, or rather in it, Victoria Gill gets up close to Roman remains which show that gladiators once fought lions. And Tim O'Brien, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Manchester joins Victoria Gill in the studio to discuss the week's other science news. They also talk about Graci Kim's new release, Dreamslinger and check in on April's spotlight on independent bookstores. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:04:59) Graci Kim's Dreamslinger is out now! Independent Bookstore day was fun. Kristen got a chance to check out a new store near her. We learn about an independent bookstore we want to visit in the UK someday. Columbus Book Festival has Roseanne A. Brown this year! Any upcoming book events near you? Let us know! Rick's Bluesky account continues to delight. Deep cut deities are a fabulous way to learn more about Greek mythology. The Red Pyramid discussion (00:19:13) Diving in to The Red Pyramid chapter 25 Back in Carter's POV! First we address Carter's thoughts on his being forced to take lizard-shape. Then back to the plot… and Thoth. Giant pyramid arena shows that ancient cultures show up in modern cities and countries. Graceland was absolutely a test for both Sadie and Carter. Is that glow that the building gave off after Thoth tossed the ankh around the statue's neck important?! Thoth doesn't help them understand the painting, but the magic book he has a little guidance for. There is an incantation that will allow them to banish Set to the Duat where he will be contained for centuries. They will need to learn Set's secret name and a Feather of Truth from the Land of Anubis. Khufu is gonna play guide. A wild riverboat appears! Favorite lines and favorite scenes! And now chapter 26 The Egyptian Queen has eyes painted that are moving, blinking, and looking for trouble. We discuss if that has something to do with mastheads on other ships. Bast is back! She introduces us to Captain Bloostained Blade, complete with human body and a double-bladed battle ax for a head. And the red specks on the edge of the blade are concerning… A boat you can summon once a year when you need it? Sign me up. Giving BSB their desination feels like telling a genie a wish. The last time Bast was on this boat, she was with Julius, and the kids' mother had just died. Cats and serpents are mortal enemies, which explains Bast and Apophis. The Ma'at doesn't like it when you insult order. That way lies chaos. Carter goes to bed and his ba immediately takes off. His ba gets to watch a crazy plane situation that Zia & Dejardins handle very skillfully. And a snow storm in Brooklyn. And finally a memory of what exactly Set did to Osiris, and what it means for Julius. Sadie wakes Carter. They have arrived at the First Cataract, aka The Land of the Dead. Favorite lines and favorite scenes! Feedback (01:12:46) A huge thanks to David Ludwig for his lobster roll advice! Kristen is excited to look for both hot and cold preparations while she is in Maine. We can't remember if we discussed the Gray Sisters casting from D23 2024, but we're doing it now! Where do we know Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, and Margaret Cho from? The Red Pyramid discussion (00:19:45) Let's start with The Red Pyramid chapter 23. Sadie is human again! We find out how she did it. Nobody woke Carter for lunch, but that's the least of his worries right now. Bast thinks Set might not be the one at the top of the food chain here, and that's definitely cause for concern. It's time to head to Memphis–and this time they're not “borrowing” a car, though Bast still requires a convertible. There's a lot of atmospheric description to this book, and we're all for it. Baboons playing basketball is probably a good indication that a god is nearby. Carter is NOT great at basketball, but we find out why it's so important to him. We love how hard Sadie is working to be kind to him about this. Finally, we get to meet Toth, the god of wisdom, as well as all of his ibis receptionists. Is it weird that the Greeks likened him to Hermes? Ah, yes, the importance of astrology and leechcraft. The way Thoth's powers are portrayed was super interesting and makes you wonder how powerful he is. We get some important backstory about the relationship between Horus, Isis, Set, and Thoth. Thoth seems to be a bit of a contradiction–highly intelligent and yet not very observant. Knowing a creature's actual name has such power, and we love this concept. How can Sadie hold a goddess at bay if she was also having trouble with her sense of self enough to struggle coming out of her kite form? Did we all feel on a spiritual level how much Thoth didn't want to read his old work, or was that just us? Was this chapter too long and too full of information to really comprehend everything? Time for our favorite lines and favorite moments! Now it's time to head to Graceland in The Red Pyramid chapter 24. Was Elvis a magician? All signs point to yes. Seriously, though, music really is magical. It must be so weird to be at Graceland with no tourists. STOP DESTROYING NATIONAL MONUMENTS. Karen really wants to know what type of lizard Carter was turned into. Sadie is SO resourceful, and we loved seeing how she defeated the magicians. This time, we DO know what kind of reptile is on the page–and it's a big one! How did Sadie turn Carter back into a person? Was this just a test from Thoth? At least they fixed up Graceland before they left. Could the cat of Ra actually be Bast?? How does she feel about battling Apophis again? Favorite lines and favorite scenes! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 135, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 25 and 26, as well as get you up to date on whatever Percy Jackson news might be out there. Pain, particularly chronic pain, is hard to research. New therapeutics are hard to screen for. Patients are not all the same. Sergui Pascu and colleagues at Stanford university have been growing brain samples from stem cells. Then they began connecting different samples, specialised to represent different brain regions. This week they announce their most complex “assembloid” yet, one that even reacts to hot chilli, passing a signal from the sensory neurons through to the thinking bits. The hope is that it can provide insights on how pain, and potential painkillers, work.Human brains are notoriously large, particularly infants. Whilst for primates the human pelvis is quite narrow, to allow us to walk and run on two legs. This notoriously makes childbirth, well, not as straightforward as most other species. This evolutionary “obstetric dilemma” has been debated for decades. Marianne Brasil, of West Washington University, and colleagues, have published this week a huge study of contemporary human genes and anatomies available from the UK Biobank to shed some more light on this ongoing compromise.Malta is an island in the Mediterranean no less than 80km from land. So how come Eleanor Scerri and colleagues have discovered archaeological evidence of hunter-gatherers living there from 8,500 years ago? And they didn't just visit and leave. They stayed for perhaps a millennium before farming arrived. Maybe a rethink of what nautical capabilities our ancestors had in the deep past is needed? A year ago, Science in Action gate-crashed a conference looking at plans for meeting the forthcoming arrival of asteroid Apophis in 2029. This year the meeting is in Tokyo, and Richard Binzel, emeritus professor of Astronomy at MIT, gives us an update on how the space agencies are hoping to collaborate to maximise the scientific value from what will be a global, visible, phenomenon in just 4 years. They explore the implications of the Jubilee year, the prophetic connections to the year 2025, and the mysterious Stargate program. The discussion highlights the intertwining of biblical prophecy with contemporary events, raising questions about the end of the age of grace and the potential for a totalitarian government arising in the near future. In this conversation, Chasity and Doc Brown explore various themes related to space exploration, biblical prophecy, and the intersection of science and faith. They discuss the implications of the Space Force, the potential for asteroid impacts as a form of divine judgment, and the Hydro Plate Theory as an explanation for the Great Flood. The conversation also delves into cycles of judgment as seen in biblical texts and the relevance of extra-biblical writings, culminating in a discussion about astronomy and its connections to mythology and biblical narratives. In this enlightening conversation, Chasity and Doc Brown delve into the connections between biblical narratives, astrology, and the New Age movement. They explore the significance of the Age of Aquarius, the role of spiritual hierarchies, and the implications of Alice Bailey's teachings on modern society. The discussion also touches on the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty, the influence of paganism on the founding fathers, and the prophetic significance of the year 2025 in relation to spiritual awakenings and the anticipated arrival of a world teacher.Head over to http://www.prometheuslenspodcast.com to sign up for the "All Access Pass" and get early access to episodes, private community, members only episodes, private Q & A's, and coming documentaries. From March 10, 2021. A new study examines the formation of rocky worlds from dust particles containing ice and carbon, increasing the possibility that our own Milky Way galaxy could be filled with aquatic planets similar to Earth. Plus, a simulation of the Milky Way-Andromeda collision and an overview of asteroid Apophis.   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! Today, Kevin and I meet with the TheTERP RAPTOR team at the University of Maryland who are  leading an ambitious mission. What started as a class project has rapidly grown into a multi-institutional collaboration, bringing together researchers from UMD, the Naval Research Laboratory, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks to design and launch a 12U CubeSat for ahigh-speed flyby of the asteroid Apophis.  Their goal? To image Apophis, analyze its surface, and send ground-breaking data back to Earth. Guided by aerospace engineering professor Brent Barbee, the UMD team includes Adrienne, Kruti, Chinthan, Sean, Rahul, Ryan, and Cameron, a diverse group of Masters and PHD students. Their expertise spans orbital determination, machine learning, radio communications, and structures and mechanical modeling, and their prior experience includes work at NASA, Naval ResearchLaboratory, the FDA, ExoAnalytic Solutions, and UMD's Balloon Payload Program.  We are excited to learn more about how their student-led initiative evolved into a full-scalespace mission and we know you will be just as  inspired as we are by this amazing team.
