Welcome back to the Retirement Rebel Life After 60 podcast, I'm thrilled to have you join us for series 2. This podcast is very close to my heart, as it's a platform where women can show just how fabulously they're ageing and breaking stereotypes about life after 60. Today's introduction to the new series reflects the core subjects we'll be diving into, which I believe will resonate deeply with our listeners who are keen on embracing ageing with a positive, adventurous outlook.Firstly, we explore the immense power of storytelling in challenging ageism. I'm especially excited about my conversation with Sky Bergman, an award-winning filmmaker from America. Her incredible film, "Lives Well Lived," is changing the way young and old communicate and understand each other, breaking down ageist barriers. This highlights a central theme of our podcast—redefining what it means to grow older and refusing to let limiting beliefs hold us back from new adventures and fulfilling lives. I know many of you tune in because you share this hunger for a narrative that doesn't diminish with age but thrives with new beginnings and connections.Another key aspect we'll delve into is the empowering stories of women who have used their retirement as a springboard for new ventures. One such story is that of Tricia Cusden, who founded her own makeup company in her mid-sixties. She is a walking testament to the idea that it's never too late to start something new and successful. At an age when many feel pressured to slow down, Tricia's story is a powerful reminder that our sixties can be a time of blossoming, entrepreneurship, and rekindling passions. These tales will not only inspire but also provide practical insights on how to pursue such ventures with vigour and confidence.Lastly, we take a close look at the emotional journey that comes with ageing. This includes a heartfelt discussion on grief with Nicola Marshall. As we age, the topic of death tends to surface more often, and it can be a heavy burden to carry alone. Nicola offers valuable advice on how to navigate grief positively, helping us to understand and process these emotions. Coupled with lighter subjects like humour and embracing a joyful perspective on ageing discussed with guests like Valerie Troy, we strive to provide a balanced view on living our best lives post-60, facing fears head-on, and finding joy and growth in every chapter. To all my listeners, whether new or returning, I hope these stories and discussions will ignite a spark in you and help redefine your own narrative around ageing. Let's continue this journey together, sharing our stories and inspiring each other to live fully and fearlessly. Today we meet Tricia Cusden, founder of Look Fabulous Forever.Frustrated with the lack of conversation around good quality products available for mature skin, the now 75-year old launched cosmetics company Look Fabulous Forever in 2013, working alongside her two daughters Anna and Suzy. She and Anna discuss the inspiration behind the company, navigating the world of e-commerce while also running a manufacturing business and the secrets to working harmoniously with her children. She says: "I launched the company with no great targets in mind, but I wanted to see if I could do something with this money. It was much more interesting than shoving it in a pension and I wanted to get out there, meet new people and have a more interesting life."CreditsPresenter: Éilis CroninProducer: Til OwenArt direction: David Robinson Hosted on Acast. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing twice now and I still get excited and inspired by her story. Tricia Cusden is the founder of Look Fabulous Forever, an award-winning makeup and skincare brand with a range of products specially formulated for older skin. The brand is proudly pro-age - it's Tricia's belief that age is no barrier to looking and feeling fabulous. She founded the business at the age of 65 having become disillusioned with buying makeup that no longer worked on her older skin and by the anti-ageing language of the beauty industry. In 2013, she took a leap of faith and launched LFF as a face to face social selling business. Thanks to two YouTube videos she posted showing the products being used on older women, she soon changed direction and became an ecommerce brand. She now has over 100 tutorials on YouTube with over 7 million views between them and in 2018, she wrote a book, Living the Life More Fabulous - a guide to beauty, style and empowerment for older women. She also works with her two daughters, Anna who is the managing director and Suzy who is LFF's operations director. This week's episode features the incredible Tricia Cusden. I don't say this lightly when I say that these episodes are the reason I started this podcast. She is the perfect example that it is never too late to start over and live the most full-life possible. If you can get out of your own way, there is so much more that you are capable of than you let yourself believe. Tricia started out her career as a stay-at-home mom to her two daughters. When her daughters got older, she went back to university and got her degree at 38. She then began a career as a management training consultant. After working for a company for 10 years, she jumped into entrepreneurship and ran her own consultancy until she was 64. After 26 years in that career, Tricia closed down her business in order to help with the care of her granddaughter, who had been born with a rare chromosomal disorder. At 65, when her granddaughter had improved and had other help, Tricia decided she needed a new project. She had always loved make-up and saw a huge gap in the market for aging women. Without any experience in the field, she set out to start her own beauty line with Look Fabulous Forever. What has happened in the 7 years since she launched the brand is just incredible. She has built a business that both her daughters now work in, written a book, attended the Oscars, created a large following, and so much more. She's such an inspiration to me and so many others.
Many women feel they are ignored by the larger economy after they reach a certain age, and some of them aren't willing to accept that. Tamasin Ford speaks to Bonnie Marcus, host of the Badass Women at Any Age podcast, who explains how women over 60 can deal with the double-whammy of sexism and ageism in business. Meanwhile, Tricia Cusden tells us about how she started up the cosmetics retailer Look Fabulous Forever - a business run by and for women in their older years. And Ruth Saunders, author of Female Entrepreneurs: The Secrets of Their Success, explains why the larger business community would be smart to think more about older women in the economy. Living longer and healthier means embracing a third chapter in life as “fabulously” as possible, says Tricia Cusden, a former management training consultant who has built a successful new business, in her late 60s. When she and her daughters sat down for dinner in Los Angeles last week, they had to pinch themselves, after realizing they were living Tricia’s dream. Five years ago, instead of retiring, she launched Look Fabulous Forever, a makeup brand designed for women aged over-55. It has grown into a multi-million pound family business, with millions of YouTube views for makeup tutorials. Promoting Tricia’s product range in Hollywood is a surreal highpoint in the London businesswoman’s inspiring journey. She is also the author of Living the Life More Fabulous, a guide to “feeling great whatever your age." In this LLAMA podcast interview Tricia explains her belief that we should “go into a period of renaissance rather than retirement,” and feel younger as we explore new adventures, later in life.
Tricia Cusden set up her hugely successful beauty business when she was 65 years old. Philiy Page had the pleasure of interviewing her for this podcast. Philiy asked Tricia how she came up with the idea for https://www.lookfabulousforever.com and how she made it such a successful business turning over nearly £2 million. Tricia proves that you can start a business at any age, and shares her tips for the younger generation starting out on the career ladder.
