If your Thanksgiving looks different this year, or if gratitude feels complicated, this reflection might be exactly what you need.

Beauty and mess, comfort and discomfort — they're always side by side. From vibrant ceremonies to burning trash, from slowing down to moments of feeling lost, I've noticed how often opposites live together. And the more I lean into that tension, the more I realize it's not a problem to solve but a truth to embrace. In this episode, I explore how holding both light and dark can open the door to growth and transformation. Ecclesiastes 3:1–8 – Embracing Life's Seasons In our journey through the book of Ecclesiastes, we encounter a profound reflection on the cyclical nature of life. The teacher, often identified as Solomon, offers a contemplative view of the pursuit of happiness and the inevitability of life's seasons. Ecclesiastes 3:1–8 provides a poetic exploration of life's dichotomies, emphasizing that every aspect of existence has its appointed time. The Pursuit of Happiness In today's world, the pursuit of happiness is a common endeavor. We often make decisions based on our desire for happiness, sometimes at the expense of long-term well-being. Whether it's acquiring unnecessary material possessions, accumulating debt, or making impulsive life choices, these actions are frequently justified by the desire for immediate gratification. Temporary Nature of Happiness: Happiness, as the teacher notes, is fleeting. Life presents us with both joyous and challenging moments, and the pursuit of happiness alone can leave us feeling empty. Chasing the Wind: The teacher likens the pursuit of happiness to chasing the wind, highlighting its elusive and transient nature. Life's Dichotomies The teacher's poem in Ecclesiastes 3:1–8 serves as a reminder of the dualities within life. It is not a prescription for action but a description of the human experience. We do not control the timing of these events; they unfold as part of the divine order. A Time for Everything: The passage lists various life events, from birth to death, planting to uprooting, weeping to laughing, and mourning to dancing. These events are not within our control, emphasizing the unpredictability of life. Descriptive, Not Prescriptive: Unlike other parts of Scripture that prescribe actions, this passage describes the inevitability of life's seasons, urging us to embrace rather than resist them. Finding Meaning Beyond Happiness The teacher's exploration of life's seasons leads to a deeper understanding of our true yearning—not for temporary happiness, but for eternity. Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us that God “has made everything beautiful in its time” and “set eternity in the human heart.” Eternal Perspective: Our longing is not for the fleeting moments of happiness but for a connection with the eternal. This perspective shifts our focus from immediate gratification to a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with God. Faith in Jesus: Through faith in Jesus, we find victory over life's challenges, whether they bring happiness or sorrow. Conclusion As we navigate the complexities of life, the teachings of Ecclesiastes 3:1–8 offer wisdom and perspective. Life's seasons are beyond our control, yet each moment contributes to the tapestry of our existence. By recognizing the temporary nature of happiness and embracing the eternal, we align ourselves with a truth worth living for. In the words of the teacher, let us turn to God in faith, trusting in His guidance and finding peace in both the happy and unhappy times. This eternal perspective enriches our lives, leading us toward a deeper understanding of our purpose under the sun.

In the second installment of Jeff Krasno's Stoicism series, we explore three timeless Stoic practices for living with presence, perspective, and purpose. Jeff introduces present moment nostalgia — learning to appreciate the “good old days” while you're living them — and the discipline of will, a core Stoic teaching on focusing only on what you can control. The episode concludes with a reflection on memento mori, the ancient practice of remembering death as a way to live more fully and intentionally. Whether you're seeking calm amid chaos or meaning amid uncertainty, these contemplations offer practical tools for cultivating serenity and gratitude in everyday life.

The snap, crackle, and pop of aging joints might not be what we expected in our forties, but as we navigate this season of life, we're finding both humor and wisdom in the journey. Jess opens up about her recent knee replacement surgery and the humbling experience of buying a raised toilet seat and walking with a cane before she hit 50. Meanwhile, Steph shares her transition to progressive lenses and how her once-perfect vision took a sudden nosedive after 40. Together, we laugh about bodies that make Rice Krispies sounds when we stand up and how our children are both mortified and fascinated by these new developments. But amid the physical challenges, we're discovering unexpected gifts. Our conversations with our Gen Z children have revealed important lessons about work-life balance and setting healthy boundaries—concepts our generation wasn't always taught to prioritize. We're learning to honor our limitations, like recognizing when our "social battery" is depleted or acknowledging that sometimes, when the sun goes down at 5 PM, we're just done for the day.We take a nostalgic trip through technologies that have faded away, from encyclopedias sold door-to-door to mix tapes and AOL's iconic "You've got mail." These shared memories connect us to our past while reminding us how much we've adapted through the years. While aging isn't always graceful (and certainly isn't for the weak), we're embracing this season with gratitude, perspective, and plenty of laughter. After all, what's the alternative? Join us for this honest, heartfelt conversation about finding joy in life's changing seasons.
I sit down with author Jen Thompson to discuss her book "Return to Jesus: An Invitation to Abide with Him in Every Beautiful, Stressful or Tedious Moment." This conversation is for every woman who feels overcommitted before her feet hit the floor in the morning.Jen opens up about what prompted her to write the book... that post-pandemic season when life went from zero to 100 mph and she desperately wanted to carry the lessons of stillness into the chaos. We dive into what it really means to abide with Jesus throughout ordinary, overwhelming, and mundane moments rather than compartmentalizing our faith into just the "holy" parts of life. The heart of our conversation tackles the plague of overcommitment that so many women face. Jen shares practical wisdom about taking your calendar before the Lord, learning to say no without explanation, and why scheduling "no plans days" might be the most counter-cultural thing you can do. We explore why our worth often gets tangled up in our productivity and how saying yes to everything might be robbing someone else of their opportunity to serve. Jen vulnerably shares about her own struggle with shame and how Jesus meets us exactly where we are - no cleaning up required. We discuss why the voices telling us to get ourselves together before coming to God sound nothing like how our Father actually speaks to us.Whether you're drowning in expectations, numb with busyness, or simply trying to figure out how to meet with Jesus in your current season of life, this conversation offers hope, practical tools, and the reminder that you are seen, loved, and held by God in every moment.Chapters00:00 | Introduction and the Cost of Writing02:59 | The Heart Behind 'Return to Jesus'06:02 | Abiding in Busy Seasons of Life12:33 | Navigating Overcommitment and Saying No18:44 | Meeting Jesus in Ordinary Moments22:07 | The Impact of Shame on Our Relationship with God26:39 | Disrupting Patterns for an Eternal Perspective27:23 | Disrupting the Mundane: Finding Spiritual Rhythms30:40 | Seasons of Restoration: God's Work in Our Lives37:03 | Recognizing and Embracing Life's Seasons40:47 | An Invitation to Grace: You Are Seen and Loved44:01 | Designing Your Perfect Day: A Reflection on JoyJen's Website: http://www.jenthompsonauthor.comJen's Blog: http://www.trulyyoursjen.comJen's Facebook: facebook.com/trulyyoursjenJen's Instagram: instagram.com/trulyyoursjenJen's Podcast: https://jenthompsonauthor.com/the-podcastJen's Book: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/747877/return-to-jesus-by-jen-thompson/
Transitions are inevitable. Whether it's becoming a parent, shifting careers, retiring, or simply navigating unexpected change. But why do transitions feel so unsettling, and how can we meet them with more self-compassion and patience? In this episode of Grow the Good, I sit down with my friend and fellow MAPP grad, Ilene Schaffer, to explore the psychology of transitions. With more than 25 years of experience in counseling psychology, Ilene shares her wisdom on navigating endings, sitting with uncertainty in the “neutral zone,” and creating intentional new beginnings. We talk about what it means to let go of old identities, how to clarify your non-negotiables, and why patience and self-compassion are the keys to moving through life's changes with resilience.Top 5 Takeaways:Self-compassion is essential in transitions, whether the change is chosen or not.The “neutral zone” between endings and beginnings is where reflection and growth take place.Defining non-negotiables helps guide decisions during uncertain times.Patience is vital; most transitions take 6–9 months to fully adjust.Fulfillment isn't about balance, it's about intentional choices aligned with your values.Tune in to learn more from Ilene, and hopefully, approach your next transition with a little bit more ease. --------------The Grow the Good Podcast is produced by Palm Tree Pod Co.

We would love to hear from you! Text us any feedback. Have you ever had a season of life that looked nothing like you planned? That's exactly what happened during my summer break from the podcast. What I expected to be a peaceful time of preparation transformed into a rollercoaster of unexpected challenges, profound grief, beautiful celebrations, and deep life lessons. When God nudged me to take a summer podcast break, I struggled with the decision. I'd committed to showing up consistently every Thursday with content to help families cultivate strong homes. But as Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, "We make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps." Those words became my summer anthem as I navigated a season unlike any other in my 23 years of parenting. For the first time, my children weren't all together for the summer. This shift forced me to confront an uncomfortable truth that home isn't necessarily about a physical location—it's about where your people are.The concept of cultivating strong families took on new meaning as I researched what cultivation truly entails. The agricultural process of prepare, till, plant, and tend perfectly mirrors what happens in our family relationships. This summer felt like a season of intense tilling—that uncomfortable but necessary breaking up of hard soil to prepare for new growth. Sometimes the most significant growth happens during the most challenging seasons. The tilling stage isn't comfortable—it's messy, disruptive, and often painful. But without it, the soil remains too hard to nurture new life.As we return to our regular podcast schedule, I'm excited to bring you meaningful conversations that help us all navigate the beautiful, messy process of family life together. Starting next week, we'll feature an amazing interview that came together unexpectedly, demonstrating God's provision even when we feel unprepared. Whether you're in a season of preparation, tilling, planting, or tending in your family life, I hope you'll join our community of parents committed to cultivating hearts that truly beat for home.JOIN ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Follow Along @ - https://www.instagram.com/nikkicronksmith/
“No regrets” is an American slogan along with “No Fear” and “Just Do It.” Yet more often than not we don't “just do it,” having no fear is psychopathic, and having no regrets means you have no sorrow for ever hurting anyone or making a mistake. Regret is simply recognizing sadness or disappointment about something we did we wish we hadn't, or we didn't do and wish we had, and Dan Pink's research showcases it's a massive power if we'll recognize it and learn from it. Not as he says, reject it or wallow in it. The following conversation was my second time having Dan on the show. Dan Pink is a multi-best selling author, and when I say best selling, I don't mean one day on an obscure Amazon book category like Amish Romance, but the actual New York Times bestseller list. You'll likely recognize his books such as A Whole New Mind, To Sell Is Human, and When. His books have sold millions of copies, have been translated into forty-two languages. He also has a TED talk titled “The Puzzle of Motivation” which has somewhere north of 30 million views. I recently saw him being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. Dan is an author like Brene' Brown who leads with research, and he's now turned his focus to regrets with his new book, The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward. I asked him back on the show the moment I saw the book title and you're about to hear me dig in with him on how we can harness regret for our progress, not suffer or run from it. For Church News reporter Sydney Walker, the journey into journalism involved viewing challenges as opportunities and trusting the Lord would guide her to where she needed to be. A Brigham Young University journalism graduate in 2017, she interned for the Deseret News’ Faith section, worked as an assistant in the Priesthood and Family Department at Church headquarters and later became a reporter at the Church News. In this episode of the Church News podcast, Walker joins Church News editor Ryan Jensen to discuss how faith in a loving Heavenly Father and in the Savior, Jesus Christ, has helped her embrace opportunities to serve in various roles and places. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Hosts Jon Ryan Jensen, editor of the Church News, and Church News reporter Mary Richards share unique views of the stories, events, and people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.
