Together, we'll explore the vibrant possibilities that life still holds for us, breaking away from the traditional expectations of retirement. In today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tricia Cusden, an inspiring woman who launched her own makeup range, Look Fabulous Forever, at the age of 65. RetailCraft - digital retail, ecommerce and brands - Retail Podcast
Two fresh angles that speak to the developments in multichannel retail - changes in formats, product, audience engagement and business models. Our first guest, Charlotte Fairbairn, talks us through the model of MyWardrobeHQ, the luxury-rental-subscription-white-label genre-defying multi-hyphenate business that's carving a new path for fashion brands in the re-commerce, circular economy. We learn from Charlotte some of the operational and business challenges they've overcome in their journey, as well as some choice insights on what it takes to create circular commerce with your customer. Janis Thomas of Look Fabulous Forever gives us a new look on cosmetics as she explains the brand's genesis, founded for the specific needs of older skins. We hear how a start-from-scratch tale of needs analysis, product development and market creation started with the founder, along with how the business grows its base. Along the way we delve into Janis' career and learn that nothing's new in the world of subscription commerce (or rather, that she was pioneering approaches way before we were reporting on them!). This recording is also a welcome to the studio to Georgia Scott, my co-host from Adobe. Georgia settled immediately into the studio and we'll do a 'behind the scenes' chat with Georgia over the summer, including perhaps that our first event partnership was over a decade ago at the British Embassy in Paris... Marketers often exist within a bubble that messes with their perception of their audience. They build ideas about their customers based on their own desires and preconceived notions about different segments, thinking that older audiences are slow and don't engage with brands online. That an instant conversion is always a win. And, most dangerously, that everyone looks and acts like them. This is based on ego, not data, and is totally F*cked. But how do you move away from comfortable ideals and begin to engage with your audience in a way that drives higher lifetime value by embracing their diversity and changing behavior?Join me, Siobhan Solberg, and my co-host Russell McAthy as we speak to Janis Thomas, Ecommerce Marketing Director of Look Fabulous Forever and ex-Marketing Director at Birchbox, about everything from marketing Playboy to young men to marketing make-up to post-menopausal women. In this episode:Granular customer data that tracks journeys helps businesses attract the right sort of customers that stay long term.Content that doesn't drive instant conversions is still a valuable part of the customer journey and can drive higher retention.Businesses should look to shift from the short-term goal of instant conversion to lifetime value. Customers that take more convincing often leave later on.Representation and accurate portrayals of real people are key when marketing to underrepresented audiences like post-menopausal women.Older audiences may take longer to make decisions and convert but are willing to push through longer page load times. While older audiences may have lower expectations of side speed and load time, it is important to give them the best possible experience in return for their loyalty.Looking at customer data can help e-commerce marketers avoid the common pitfall of believing their customer looks and acts like them.Talk to and listen to customers to get the most valuable behavioral insights via Facebook groups and research.Over 65s is one of the fastest growing markets, and their experiences should be invested in rather than only chasing Gen Y and Z.Continually learning about marketing and evolving technologies helps marketers understand their customers' journeys better and create consistency. There are company-wide benefits of engaging with marketing teams across the business and learning from each other's work.Creating a culture where everyone can submit ideas for optimization invites ideas from people without set assumptions. Mixed ability groups create better results.Brands have a duty to support their customers through the difficult periods of life.Mentoring is important for women to take the next step up in their careers, and encourage more to consider where a board role may fit in their careers.Mentors have just as much to gain from the two-way relationship as mentees.Resources:Janis on LinkedInPublic speakingRob Jackson's WYK DigitalLook Fabulous Forever

I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing twice now and I still get excited and inspired by her story. Tricia Cusden is the founder of Look Fabulous Forever, an award-winning makeup and skincare brand with a range of products specially formulated for older skin. The brand is proudly pro-age - it's Tricia's belief that age is no barrier to looking and feeling fabulous. She founded the business at the age of 65 having become disillusioned with buying makeup that no longer worked on her older skin and by the anti-ageing language of the beauty industry. In 2013, she took a leap of faith and launched LFF as a face to face social selling business. Thanks to two YouTube videos she posted showing the products being used on older women, she soon changed direction and became an ecommerce brand. She now has over 100 tutorials on YouTube with over 7 million views between them and in 2018, she wrote a book, Living the Life More Fabulous - a guide to beauty, style and empowerment for older women. She also works with her two daughters, Anna who is the managing director and Suzy who is LFF's operations director. This week's episode features the incredible Tricia Cusden. I don't say this lightly when I say that these episodes are the reason I started this podcast. She is the perfect example that it is never too late to start over and live the most full-life possible. If you can get out of your own way, there is so much more that you are capable of than you let yourself believe. Tricia started out her career as a stay-at-home mom to her two daughters. When her daughters got older, she went back to university and got her degree at 38. She then began a career as a management training consultant. After working for a company for 10 years, she jumped into entrepreneurship and ran her own consultancy until she was 64. After 26 years in that career, Tricia closed down her business in order to help with the care of her granddaughter, who had been born with a rare chromosomal disorder. At 65, when her granddaughter had improved and had other help, Tricia decided she needed a new project. She had always loved make-up and saw a huge gap in the market for aging women. Without any experience in the field, she set out to start her own beauty line with Look Fabulous Forever. What has happened in the 7 years since she launched the brand is just incredible. She has built a business that both her daughters now work in, written a book, attended the Oscars, created a large following, and so much more. She's such an inspiration to me and so many others.
Many women feel they are ignored by the larger economy after they reach a certain age, and some of them aren't willing to accept that. Tamasin Ford speaks to Bonnie Marcus, host of the Badass Women at Any Age podcast, who explains how women over 60 can deal with the double-whammy of sexism and ageism in business. Meanwhile, Tricia Cusden tells us about how she started up the cosmetics retailer Look Fabulous Forever - a business run by and for women in their older years. And Ruth Saunders, author of Female Entrepreneurs: The Secrets of Their Success, explains why the larger business community would be smart to think more about older women in the economy. Living longer and healthier means embracing a third chapter in life as “fabulously” as possible, says Tricia Cusden, a former management training consultant who has built a successful new business, in her late 60s. When she and her daughters sat down for dinner in Los Angeles last week, they had to pinch themselves, after realizing they were living Tricia’s dream. Five years ago, instead of retiring, she launched Look Fabulous Forever, a makeup brand designed for women aged over-55. It has grown into a multi-million pound family business, with millions of YouTube views for makeup tutorials. Promoting Tricia’s product range in Hollywood is a surreal highpoint in the London businesswoman’s inspiring journey. She is also the author of Living the Life More Fabulous, a guide to “feeling great whatever your age." In this LLAMA podcast interview Tricia explains her belief that we should “go into a period of renaissance rather than retirement,” and feel younger as we explore new adventures, later in life.
