What does it feel like to move from a place of invisibility into one of visibility? So often, women in their fifties and sixties are expected to retreat quietly into the background, fading into the shadows rather than stepping forward with the wisdom and strength they carry. But what if the opposite were true? Today, Liz reflects on the immense value that is lost when older women are overlooked, their voices unheard and their contributions unrecognised. She invites us to consider how much richer the world could be if we truly honoured and embraced the experience, perspective, and power that women in this stage of life have to offer. ******** If you've enjoyed this taster then join me, Liz Scott, for this short reflection. Each day on Insight Timer, I share 5 Minutes in Nature — daily moments to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the natural world. On Insight Timer, you'll also find more of my meditations and courses designed to support your wellbeing and inner calm. If you'd like to explore further, visit my website: lizscott.co.uk. There, you can also discover the Wellbeing Listener Training, a powerful way to deepen connection and listening in your life and work. I'd love for you to join me in whichever way feels right — whether it's a weekly reflection here, or daily pauses together on Insight Timer.
(This episode was first published in November 2022.) Today's guest is one of my personal heroes, Caryn Franklin. Caryn started her career in the 80s as a fashion editor before moving into TV where she presented, amongst other things, BBC's The Clothes Show. Always outspoken, Caryn has spent four decades being a thorn in the fashion industry's side. Championing diversity of all forms LONG before it became the cool thing to do. She cofounded All Walks Beyond The Catwalk to promote body equality in fashion, chaired Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and was awarded an MBE for her services to fashion. Now she's written Skewed, with Professor Keon West, to examine how media bias distorts our views of others. To bring it back down to my usual level, She is also the owner of my fantasy hair! Caryn joined me by popular demand to talk 40 years of fighting for diversity, why the fashion industry is still so bloody bad at catering for older women and why clothes should be a superpower. She also shared her experiencing of being a carer to her first daughter's father in her 30s and how that changed the way she felt about ageing, how going grey nearly cost her her job and how HRT gave her her life back. * You can buy You can buy Skewed by Caryn Franklin and Professor Keon West from audible. The figure of the young, tragic male poet has long dominated cultural narratives about artistic brilliance and early death. But what if poetic genius deepens, rather than fades, with age? In this talk given at the 2025 Harvard Horizons Symposium, Slavic languages and literatures PhD candidate and Harvard Horizons Scholar Alex Braslavsky explores the creative power of poets in their advanced age in her project, "Embracing Twilight: Older Women Poets and the Unfurling of Their Voices". Focusing on three radical women writers, Braslavsky examines how aging can become a source of artistic innovation, personal transformation, and visionary insight. Drawing on archival research and a deep connection to Slavic literary traditions, her work challenges dominant cultural myths of decline and illuminates the enduring power of late-life creativity.

Do you wonder what your social life will be like in the 40's? If so, tune in while Carla tells us what it is like!
Last year, Google invited me to come lead trainings for Aging Awareness Week. This was a truly enjoyable opportunity to work with some brilliant leaders. When I asked about who to expect in the audience, I expected to be told, “People over 55.” Instead, I was told, “This ERG is for folks over 40.” 40! I don't think of 40 as “aging” just yet. But, I guess it is when society and culture start to stigmatize us, isn't it?? If you are a woman over 40 who is done shrinking and ready to lead with the clarity, power, and confidence that comes from your decades of wisdom, with zero apologies, this episode is for you! In this episode, I'm speaking directly to women over 40 who are ready to start leading with the full force of their lived experience. I know what it feels like to be in rooms where youth, speed, and loud voices are mistaken for leadership - but I'm here to tell you that your depth, clarity, wisdom, perspective, and emotional intelligence are exactly what's needed right now. We're not the past. We are the future of work. And, data backs this up: 42% of labor force growth in the next decade will come from people 55 and older, mostly women. Together, we'll explore how to navigate the double bind of age and gender, where you're expected to stay relevant but not be perceived as “too much.” I identify the forces at play (such as the intersectionality of ageism and sexism) and provide tools to help you reclaim your space with power and intention. You'll hear how your ability to read a room, speak with clarity, and lead for legacy, not ego, is your greatest asset. Your ability to listen deeply, ask better questions, and build meaningful collaborative (not competitive) relationships? That's the edge younger leaders are still learning. This episode is your reminder that you don't need to fight for a seat at the table—you are the table. Your leadership is expansive, rooted, sturdy, and deeply needed. So if you've been waiting for permission to own the room, this is it. Do you ever have days where the weights that seemed do-able yesterday are suddenly challenging today? What is happening? Listener Julie had this same issue: “Hi Megan. I've been weight training for about the last five years and progressing slowly. But just lately the weights seem to be much harder to lift. Even though I've been doing the same weights for a while. I was just wondering, is it my age? I'm 63 now. Or is it to do with my nutrition? I do eat over 100 grams of protein a day and thought that was fine. Any suggestions would be grateful. Thank you.” In this shortie episode, I talk about WHY weights may be harder to lift on certain days - there's a lot more at play than you realize! - how age impacts our strength training and how to adjust our protein intake as we get older.
