Welcome back to our final partial agonist episode! Today we are discussing Cariprazine, brand name, Vraylar.
At his Monday sentencing, Emma Cooley, the mother of murdered Sydney Palmer — who was fatally gunned down by husband Michael Edgington in Kansas last year during a domestic altercation — lambasted her disgraced son-in-law, forcefully telling him “she loved you” while also detailing how he cruelly tormented Palmer's relatives closely following her death with deeply troubling actions and remarks aimed at them. “‘The first thing you asked me was for the PlayStation,' Cooley recalled of her exchange with Edgington after Palmer's death, as reported by the local news Sumner NewsCow. “‘Well, here's your PlayStation,' she calmly stated, immediately following her statement, setting one console on a wooden bench near where he was seated. Palmer, 25, had been arguing with Edgington on July 3 prior to her demise and purportedly hurled a 4.04-ounce concrete trinket at his head, investigators said. “I noticed a swelling on his forehead,” a responding officer noted in the official case document. “Edgington's counteraction involved shooting her using a 9 mm handgun.” “‘I recognize I did something wrong,' he stated at his criminal sentencing, where he was ultimately given 61 months behind bars — about five years — for second-degree murder. “‘But I don't believe I pose a threat to society,' Edgington informed Sumner County District Court Judge William Mott, who imposed the top penalty permitted, in addition to 36 months' probation. Edgington will also be prohibited from owning firearms in the future. In addition to requesting his PlayStation, Edgington further horrified Palmer's relatives by allegedly choosing to remarry in the home he had occupied with Palmer, with the ceremony reportedly taking place within those same walls. “‘This is where you killed your ex-wife and my daughter,' Cooley still said Monday. ‘And you hold a wedding ceremony there simply as though she never existed.'” Moreover, Edgington frequently informed Palmer's relatives that he allegedly acted in self-defense and that Palmer herself was ultimately fully responsible for her own demise, Cooley asserted in ongoing repeated discussions. In statements to authorities, Edgington said: “Sydney suffered from severely manic episodes. A physician had recently discontinued her Vraylar medication, and she reportedly grew furious with me for failing to remove the trash. She immediately proceeded to damage property inside our dwelling, and I asked her to stop. She then grabbed a concrete figure and threatened to throw it at me. I told her to stop. She hurled it, forcefully striking my own head.” “‘She loved you,' Cooley stated on Monday. ‘Even with her final breath for law enforcement, she simply refused to acknowledge you had killed her. She was forever attempting to defend you.'” Edgington, having spent 10 months jailed before securing bond in May 2024, is slated to spend five years one month in state prison. I am a 75 year old widow who published her first book at 73! I published another one the next year, this past March, and am now writing another. The first two books were on bipolar and the latest one is on loneliness. In the bipolar books, I teach people how to live with their disorder and make a decent life for themselves. My first book is called How to Live with Bipolar and the next one, which is more specialized, is called Bipolar 1 Rescue Plan. They are both selling well on Amazon. The first book is a question and answer book with 125 questions and answers taken from my over 800 answers on Quora. My next book is an in depth look at bipolar 1 which is very difficult to live with. The book I am writing now on loneliness is also a question and answer book taken from Quora. People seem to like that format as you can dip in at any place in the book. As for me, I have been 100% well for three years now on a medication called Vraylar. It is my wonder pill. It is wonderful to be free of the terrible highs and lows of bipolar. I have had three abusive marriages and my last husband committed suicide, so I have had a lot of trauma to contend with. The first few years after my husband's death were very lonely and I was ill most of the time, in and out of hospitals, but I am now coping well as I told you. I have traveled a great deal in my life and have lived in four countries. When my husband and I came to the States 30 years ago, we traveled around to all the States in an RV for six years. Then we bought another RV in Amsterdam and traveled around Europe for 6 months. I haven't been far lately, and have itchy feet again. I hope this will be of some help to you.
Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, stimulants.....READY SET GO!Med cheat sheetSSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)-- Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft, Luvox, Trintellix, Viibryd-- They are generally NOT antidepressantsMainly helpful for OCD, body dysmorphia, panic (if not from trauma), depression if postpartum or fueled by neuroticism or ruminative anxietySNRIs (serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors)-- Effexor/venlafaxine, Cymbalta/duloxetineMostly helpful for combined depression/anxiety, especially with insomniaWellbutrin/bupropion-- very stimulating (prison crack!), true antidepressant; can trigger/worsen anxietyMAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors-- powerful antidepressants, lots of side effects and med interactionsLamictal/lamotrigine-- definitely ALL THAT and a bag of chips (see My Desert Island Meds in Season 1)Atypical antipsychotics- Abilify/aripiprazole, Latuda/lurasidone, Seroquel/quetiapine, Saphris/asenapine, Vraylar/cariprazine, Risperdal/risperidone, Zyprexa/olanzapine, Geodon/ziprasidone, Invega/paliperidone Generally good mood stabilizers (in contrast to the putative "mood stabilizers" below); typically more helpful for severe depression and bipolar disorder than true psychosis (Zyprexa and Risperdal excepted)"Mood stabilizers"- (big misnomer, most effective for mania/agitation, not depression)-- Depakote/valproic acid, Trileptal/oxcarbazepine, Tegretol/carbamazepineLithium- it's not clozapine, but gets the silver medal as a true mood stabilizer (see My Desert Island Meds in Season 1)Clozapine- the winner of the psychiatric med decathlon in most every event; needs weekly blood monitoring and has a few very serious potential side effectsBenzodiazepines- Xanax/alprazolam; Klonopin/clonazepam, Librium/chlordiazepoxide, Ativan/lorazepam, Valium/diazepamStimulants- Adderall/amphetamine; Vyvanse; Ritalin/Concerta/Focalin/methylphenidateAmphetamines are more euphoria-inducing, thus more abused and addictive and also tend to have more side effects; both amphetamines and methylphenidate are roughly equally effective for ADD/ADHDBFTAhttps://www.craigheacockmd.com/podcast-page/

The first thing you notice at the American Psychiatric Association meeting is its size. By conservative estimates, a quarter of the psychiatrists in the United States are packed into a single giant San Francisco convention center, more than 15,000 people. Being in a crowd of 15,000 psychiatrists is a weird experience. You realize that all psychiatrists look alike in an indefinable way. The men all look balding, yet dignified. The women all look maternal, yet stylish. Sometimes you will see a knot of foreign-looking people huddled together, their nametags announcing them as the delegation from the Nigerian Psychiatric Association or the Nepalese Psychiatric Association or somewhere else very far away. But however exotic, something about them remains ineffably psychiatrist. The second thing you notice at the American Psychiatric Association meeting is that the staircase is shaming you for not knowing enough about Vraylar®. Seems kind of weird. Maybe I’ll just take the escalator …no, the escalator is advertising Latuda®, the “number one branded atypical antipsychotic”. Aaaaaah! Maybe I should just sit down for a second and figure out what to do next… AAAAH, CAN’T SIT DOWN, VRAYLAR® HAS GOTTEN TO THE BENCHES TOO! Surely there’s a non-Vraylar bench somewhere in this 15,000 person convention center!
In this week’s episode: It’s been a sucktastic weekend for me, but I’m still stable. I guess that says something good about the Vraylar!
