At his Monday sentencing, Emma Cooley, the mother of murdered Sydney Palmer — who was fatally gunned down by husband Michael Edgington in Kansas last year during a domestic altercation — lambasted her disgraced son-in-law, forcefully telling him “she loved you” while also detailing how he cruelly tormented Palmer's relatives closely following her death with deeply troubling actions and remarks aimed at them. “‘The first thing you asked me was for the PlayStation,' Cooley recalled of her exchange with Edgington after Palmer's death, as reported by the local news Sumner NewsCow. “‘Well, here's your PlayStation,' she calmly stated, immediately following her statement, setting one console on a wooden bench near where he was seated. Palmer, 25, had been arguing with Edgington on July 3 prior to her demise and purportedly hurled a 4.04-ounce concrete trinket at his head, investigators said. “I noticed a swelling on his forehead,” a responding officer noted in the official case document. “Edgington's counteraction involved shooting her using a 9 mm handgun.” “‘I recognize I did something wrong,' he stated at his criminal sentencing, where he was ultimately given 61 months behind bars — about five years — for second-degree murder. “‘But I don't believe I pose a threat to society,' Edgington informed Sumner County District Court Judge William Mott, who imposed the top penalty permitted, in addition to 36 months' probation. Edgington will also be prohibited from owning firearms in the future. In addition to requesting his PlayStation, Edgington further horrified Palmer's relatives by allegedly choosing to remarry in the home he had occupied with Palmer, with the ceremony reportedly taking place within those same walls. “‘This is where you killed your ex-wife and my daughter,' Cooley still said Monday. ‘And you hold a wedding ceremony there simply as though she never existed.'” Moreover, Edgington frequently informed Palmer's relatives that he allegedly acted in self-defense and that Palmer herself was ultimately fully responsible for her own demise, Cooley asserted in ongoing repeated discussions. In statements to authorities, Edgington said: “Sydney suffered from severely manic episodes. A physician had recently discontinued her Vraylar medication, and she reportedly grew furious with me for failing to remove the trash. She immediately proceeded to damage property inside our dwelling, and I asked her to stop. She then grabbed a concrete figure and threatened to throw it at me. I told her to stop. She hurled it, forcefully striking my own head.” “‘She loved you,' Cooley stated on Monday. ‘Even with her final breath for law enforcement, she simply refused to acknowledge you had killed her. In today's chapter, I sat down with former counter-terrorism task force commander and author of Outside the Wire, Gary Edgington. Gary is a former counter-terrorism task force commander with over thirty years in law enforcement. From 1999 to 2008 he was a member of the LA FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force. After 9/11 Gary commanded a counter-terrorism task force for the California DOJ. In 2008, Gary deployed to Iraq as an advisor with the US Army. After redeploying, Gary worked intelligence assignments with the DOD and the Long Beach Police Department. Gary is also the son of a law enforcement officer who was murdered in the line of duty while Gary was only in the third week of police academy training. Dr. David Edgington is the author of the outstanding book "The Abusive Wife." But he proposes that the term "abusive" isn't accurate. A biblical term is "reviling", which he says, “Entails using speech as a non-contact weapon against another person.” Within the Christian church, pastors have overlooked this form of abuse of men in their rush to apologize for the past, continuing a trend that began long ago, succumbing to the idea that women are eternal victims and that every knee must bow to their feelings. His law enforcement journey, both inspiring and harrowing, began at the LA Sheriff's Academy, where he suffered a personal tragedy when his father was killed in the line of duty during his third week of training.Undeterred by his father's death, Gary served in several Southern California departments before serving as a Special Agent with the California Department of Justice. In this episode, I tell the story of Nicola Edgington, Marion Edgington and Sally Hodkin.On November 4, 2005, 25-year-old Nicola Edgington stabbed her 60-year-old mum Marion to death.After pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility in October 2006, Nicola was detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.In September 2009, Nicola was discharged to a housing association self-contained flat.On October 10, 2011, Nicola repeatedly spoke with emergency services personnel in an attempt to get herself sectioned.Later that day, she purchased a knife from ASDA and unsuccessfully attempted to murder 22-year-old Kerry Clark with it.She then stole a knife from a butcher's shop and stabbed and killed 58-year-old Sally Hodkin, whom Nicola had chosen to attack randomly.Judge Brian Barker handed Nicola Edgington a life sentence with a minimum term of 37 years on March 4, 2013.Len Hodkin, Sally's son, is the chairperson of the UK charity Hundred Families. Gary Edgington is a 40-year law enforcement veteran and the son of a law enforcement officer who was murdered in the line of duty while Gary was in the third week of police academy training. For almost a decade, Gary was also a Task Force Commander with the California Dept of Justice and a Task Force Officer on the FBI joint terrorism task force. Earlier in his career, Gary worked with The Beverly Hills Police Department, Manhattan Beach Police Department, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. After 9/11, Gary became Commander of a multi-agency counter-terrorism task force in L.A. When Gary retired from the DOJ, he deployed to Iraq as an embedded anti-terrorism advisor working counter-IED with the US Army and took a position as an intelligence/terrorism analyst with the Department of Defense.
