The prosecution says the data proves it: Karen Read backed into John O'Keefe and left him to die. But the medical examiner still won't call it a homicide. This week on Crimes of the Centuries, we're breaking from tradition. Instead of a crime from decades past, we're looking at a case that's still shaping headlines — and raising questions that may take years to answer. When Boston police officer John O'Keefe was found dead in the snow outside a fellow cop's home, his girlfriend, Karen Read, was accused of running him down with her SUV in a fit of drunken rage. Prosecutors said it was an open-and-shut case. But as two trials unfolded, evidence of sloppy policing, possible cover-ups, and investigative misconduct began to surface. With insights from journalist Rebecca Lavoie, we examine the tangled relationships, explosive allegations, and courtroom battles that turned this into one of the most contentious cases Massachusetts has ever seen. Will history remember the death of John O'Keefe as a tragic accident, a conspiracy, or a crime of the century? Watch the full coverage of the live stream on The Emily D. Baker YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/live/NZXF2GjEDGA The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is in a difficult position regarding Former Trooper Proctor's federal discovery. While federal discovery was provided in the Karen Read case, a protective order limits its use. Defense attorneys in other cases argue for access to this information, as Trooper Proctor was a lead investigator. The Commonwealth has been negotiating with the US Attorney's Office to modify the protective order. The motion for modification also seeks permission for the Norfolk District Attorney's Office to review remaining confidential materials provided to the prosecution and defense teams in the Karen Read case. The Commonwealth has made headway with the feds to review additional discovery materials, including grand jury and non-grand jury materials, which they have not yet seen. These materials were not part of the discovery turned over in the Karen Read case, suggesting they might be separate investigations. For the new grand jury and non-grand jury materials, the Commonwealth will first review them to determine if they need to be disclosed. Then, the federal court will decide if these materials can be turned over, potentially with an additional protective order. A future hearing on discovery process is scheduled for August 28th, 2025, at 2 p.m. ET. The Brian Walshe case is moving forward to trial in October 2025; highlighting the urgency of receiving discovery and rulings on motions to dismiss to prepare for trial. Watch the full coverage of the live stream on The Emily D. Baker YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/live/dpvMV9XQhOs Obtaining a federal download of Former Trooper Michael Proctor's phone data is sought by attorneys for multiple defendants in Norfolk County murder cases because it may contain exculpatory evidence. However, Proctor's lawyer claims nothing exculpatory exists outside the federal materials, partly because Proctor got a new phone in February 2024, potentially wiping earlier data. The problem is that the state police and Norfolk DA cannot directly extract this data; they must get it from the feds, who rejected requests for discovery from other prosecutions but turned it over in the Karen Read case. In the Karen Read case, the federal discovery was turned over, but it came with a federal protective order prohibiting its use in other cases. This creates a "boot loop" or "procedural quagmire" because Assistant District Attorney McLaughlin, who worked on the Read case, is aware of potentially exculpatory and impeachment information regarding lead investigator Former Trooper Proctor contained within these federal materials. Under Rule 14, McLaughlin is obligated to disclose the existence of such information to the defense in other cases (like the Walshe case), but the federal protective order prevents the office from physically turning over or even reviewing this material for exculpatory content. This forces the defense to argue for potentially exculpatory evidence they cannot see or definitively prove. DLA Piper's Bob Alessi thought something was amiss when he was asked to review the forensic and scientific material in the initial mistrial of Karen Read, a Massachusetts woman accused of killing a police officer. He then used his background in STEM subjects, a semi-photographic memory and a dogged attention to social media to pick apart the state's case, resulting in an acquittal on her most serious charges.

Baker YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/live/V_gRWoUtPKY A hearing was held on August 5th, which was intended to continue the evidentiary portion of the motion to dismiss for the Myles King Murder Case, but this did not happen. Instead, the court requested the defense and prosecution to collaboratively create a comprehensive list of all evidence, when it was turned over, and which items are considered prejudicial by the defense. This is complicated by the fact that the prosecution did not consistently bate stamp documents. Another significant issue is the ongoing delay in receiving discovery related to Former Trooper Michael Proctor's text messages, which are relevant to five cases, including the Myles King case. The court is waiting for federal authorities to release this discovery. The defense is frustrated by the continuous "dripping faucet" of new discovery, making it difficult to prepare their case. The bar for dismissing a case due to discovery failures in Massachusetts is high, and typically, the remedy is to grant more time for trial. The Karen Read case has brought attention to this widespread issue of lingering discovery in Massachusetts cases. The next hearing for the Myles King case is scheduled for August 12th at 2pmET, where the judge will continue to try and clarify the specific evidence at issue for the motion to dismiss. Her legal team has filed two significant motions: a motion for the return of her seized property and a motion to release impounded sidebar transcripts. First, we delve into the motion to return property. Karen Read's attorneys are pushing for the return of her 2021 Lexus LX 570 and personal cell phone, which were taken by the Massachusetts State Police. We explore the complexities surrounding the damaged Lexus, which was disassembled as part of the investigation, and how this might impact her car insurance claims. Next, we examine the motion for relief from sidebar impoundment. Karen Read's legal team is seeking the release of transcripts from sidebar conferences held during both pretrial proceedings and the trials. The argument is that "good cause" for keeping these discussions sealed no longer exists now that a verdict has been reached. We highlight the video's commentary on the unnecessary impoundment of pretrial sidebar discussions, especially when no jury was present, distinguishing these from the justified sealing of discussions related to the federal investigation. Join us as we break down these motions and their implications for the ongoing legal saga. STAY IN THE LOOP WITH EMILY D. Welcome back! It sure feels good. In our official re-launch, we discuss the case of Karen Read through HBO Max's documentary, "A Body in the Snow, The Trial of Karen Read." In January, 2022, police officer John O'Keefe was discovered in the snow, later dying from his injuries. The questions begin to roll as we all wonder what happened? Was it Karen Read? His girlfriend who left him at the house? Was it the homeowners, one of which also was a police officer? This is a two-part episode, catch the conclusion next week.

Almost exactly a year before John O'Keefe is found in the snow outside of Boston detective Brian Albert's home, Sandra Birchmore is found dead in her apartment in the middle of a blizzard. In her phone are thousands of messages between her and a police detective that indicate he is the father of her unborn child. But of course, it's never that simple. For one, he's married and his wife is about to give birth to their third child. And two, he legally, shouldn't be in a relationship with Sandra. Nobody was supposed to find out that he had been grooming and assaulting her since she was 15 years old, a grade school cadet apart of his police explorer's program. Now that she's dead - everything's about to come out into the open right? Not exactly. When Canton PD and Massachusetts State Police investigate Sandra's suspicious death, they rule her manner of death as a self exit. It would take the FBI 4 years to get involved and make an arrest. From first glance, it appeared Sandra Birchmore's connection to Karen Read ended with the fact that both crimes took place in the same town. But when Karen Read's defense team requests unredacted files from Sandra Birchmore's investigation…netizens begin digging. Many of the same exact officers that are going after Karen Read are the same ones saying Sandra Birchmore did this to herself. What are they all hiding? Full show notes at rottenmangopodcast.com
Was Brian Walshe a criminal mastermind with a sinister endgame or just a reckless idiot who thought he could cover his tracks with Google and charm? In this explosive new update to a case Annie has covered before, shocking new details have surfaced: a connection to stolen Andy Warhol paintings, as well as Michael Proctor, the former Massachusetts State Police trooper who served as lead investigator in the Karen Read trial. From suspicious searches to bizarre behavior and chilling evidence, we're diving back into the twisted saga of Brian and Ana Walshe. And this time, Brian's defense team is coming out swinging…
Part 1:A few weeks ago, the team received about 500 new documents in the Keyes case. Josh is here to chat about them, where they're taking us, and what season 7 is starting to look like.Part 2:Hi, this is Josh. And until today, I knew essentially nothing about Karen Read, her trials, the evidence, the news. After hearing a few interesting tidbits over the weekend, I decided to peek in and see what everyone's been talking about. So, today, I watched all five parts of the (stupidly named) HBO docuseries A Body in the Snow: The Karen Read Trial. And I recorded my thoughts just for you, between each episode.Trova Trip to Bali: https://trovatrip.com/trip/asia/bali/indonesia-with-josh-hallmark-sep-2025Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-bullsh--3588169/support.
Karen Read claims she did not kill her boyfriend. She dropped him off at a friend's house for a party and he was found the next morning, deceased on the front lawn. The party goers say that he never came inside which has everyone believing Karen Read ran him over with her car. But she says that never happened. Then how do you explain the 40+ pieces of HER car tail light that were found at the scene? Well, it's simple. She says she was framed. For murder. Those tail light pieces were allegedly planted by shady cops that want her to go down. Law enforcement disagree, providing video evidence that nobody touched her car and nobody could have ever placed tail light pieces at the scene. Nobody believes Karen Read. Until it's revealed that the so called CCTV footage from inside the police station… is altered. Full show notes at rottenmangopodcast.com
Colin Albert is the son of one of the most powerful families in town. And he was supposed to be anywhere but 34 Fairview, the night John O'Keefe died. For months, not a single witness that spoke with authorities ever stated Colin Albert was at the house that night. Until, John's girlfriend, Karen Read, gets charged with his death. She knows she didn't do it and is ready to prove her innocence. She hires a private investigator who uncovers that Colin was there the night of the party. So why is everyone lying to cover for him? Why does it seem like everyone is trying to protect him?Why is it so important to hide the fact that he was at the house that night? Could it be related to the fact that, just weeks after John O'Keefe's death, Colin Albert was photographed with scraped and injured knuckles? Or perhaps it has something to do with his Snapchat videos, which reveal that this popular high school football player may have violent tendencies? Full show notes at rottenmangopodcast.com
