The World Health Organisation now officially recognises gaming disorder as a mental health condition - when someone's gaming behaviour becomes so severe that it takes precedence over other interests.Symptoms include losing control over the amount of time playing, prioritising gaming over other interests and responsibilities and continuing to game despite negative consequences.But how do you know when you're addicted to gaming? In this episode, Melanie speaks with Dr. Kim Le, a child and adolescent psychiatrist based in Adelaide, Australia. He completed his psychiatry training in New South Wales and in 2015, Dr. Le received a federal grant to collaborate with an Internet Gaming Addiction Clinic for teenagers in Singapore. He has a special interest in “Gaming Disorder," which was recognized by the World Health Organization in 2018 as a mental health disorder. Dr. Le shares his professional journey that led to his interest and passion in treating families struggling with gaming addiction, and he is committed to increasing community awareness of the negative effects of online games on a child's development. Melanie and Dr. Le discuss how the game designers capitalize on the business aspect of video games that leads to the scientific development of the immersive design that hooks the player. Dr. Le introduces the idea of "The Hero's Journey" archetype that appears to meet the psychological needs of children but disconnects them from reality. They discuss why moderation is not encouraged, but rather to change the focus on family values in changing your family's routines. Since then, particular focus has been placed on internet gaming, and in 2022 the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (11th edition) classified Gaming Disorder as a "mental disorder due to addictive behaviors." But as Dr. Veli-Matti Karhulahti and Dr. Yaewon Jin explain, there is far from universal consensus on what “gaming disorder” exactly is. They share their insights as researchers of the ORE (Ontological Reconstruction of Gaming Disorder), a five-year interdisciplinary project funded by the European Research Council, and discuss the difficulties not only in identifying “gaming disorder” but in categorizing the various kinds of games that are considered. They share their own experiences with computer gaming, from early 1990s Finnish schools to South Korea's PC bangs (internet cafés). They leave us to contemplate culturally and historically dependent perspectives not only on what constitutes a so-called disorder, but why individuals play games. This episode is supported by the Otto A. Malm Foundation. Dr. Veli-Matti Karhulahti is the ORE project's principle investigator and is an interdisciplinary senior researcher of play, games, and the philosophy of science at the University of Jyväskylä. One day a religious woman with a leaflet knocks on his door accompanied by a Mysterious young girl called Misaki Nakahara who eventually helps him from becoming a social shut-in as they do weekly therapy meetings.    Sato's neighbour is an incel and old acquaintance named Kaoru Yamazaki who happens to be a raging otaku and a computer programmer. These two people will help Sato on his journey to change himself.   Sato becomes addicted and wastes his time playing an online videogame also known as a MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online game). Misaki enters his apartment and is shocked at Sato's decaying health. Misaki tries to seduce and distract him but to no avail. Sato only snaps back to reality when a player asks if they can meet in real life making Sato run back to Misaki begging forgiveness.    Misaki decides to do a psychological torture technique by binding, blinding and imprisoning Sato in his body whilst in his apartment in the hopes of changing his way of thinking. This does not work as planned and eventually Misaki decides to live with Sato as a live-in carer. This makes Sato feel depressed and he attempts to kill himself by falling out of the window, an ankle sprain and hospital visit later Sato bumps into an old female classmate from school who eventually tricks him into a cult like pyramid scheme.   Misaki is worried and confronts the woman but in doing so gets tricked into the pyramid scheme too.     Topics:     Gaming addiction has become more prevalent since the use of the internet, players now having the ability to invest their time in virtual stock and reward systems. It is also classified as a serious disorder under the World Health Organisation, under the term “Gaming Disorder”. Some reports have gathered resources in order to help those with addiction but there are also many sensational horror stories having been reported too. ·         As an example of videogames having a positive sense of community, actor Lance Reddick, famous for his role in the ‘John Wick' movies and the videogame ‘Destiny 2' had many of his fans set up vigils within the game's virtual space of Zavala after reports of the actor's death which occurred on March 16, 2023. However Psychological torture still has its criticism and its tactics and strategies have been applied to “conversion therapy”; a torture that cares less about what is true and serves only to subjugate and deconstruct an individual's sense of identity from the mistaken belief that it can “cure” the recipient. Psychological torture and abuse are one and the same, there is no evidence that supports the practice having a healthy outcome on the recipient. ·         Con artists and pyramid schemes go hand in hand, at first, the “pyramid scheme” seems like a multi-level marketing plan but the profits of such a scheme do not come from selling a product but instead from hiring workers, who in turn get a profit from those they hire. This is an unsustainable business practice since only those who are at the top will ever get a benefit from it. For example, if six individuals were at the top of the pyramid and to make profit, they need to individually hire six more, then that makes a total number of thirty-six for the second layer. By layer twelve, workers would need to hire a total of individuals greater than the earth's estimated population. With the use of technology increasing at a rapid rate among people of all ages, we have to ask ourselves how much is too much? The answer to that is kind of complicated. It depends on the content, depends on the activity, and it definitely depends on each individual user. But today's guest shares why it is important to follow your gut if you think screen time and technology use is a deeper problem. In this episode, Dr. Joe Dilley helps us see how to identify when kids are dependent on their electronics. This type of addiction as with any addition can be detrimental so he also shares ways we can break the addiction. We have to look for reasons and the motivations behind the use of technology and determine how much is enough and what is beyond the limit. Dr. Joe Dilley is a licensed Clinical Psychologist practicing in Texas and California. He is also the author of a fantastic book called The Game is Playing Your Kid. This book was written pre-pandemic and although the Covid-19 pandemic changed the way we use technology, the book remains relevant and useful.   Show Notes: [2:07] - Dr. Dilley wrote his book and a few articles for ChildNEXUS regarding technology use in kids pre-pandemic. [3:03] - The pandemic provided an unexpected and unwelcome boost to everybody's digital time spent. [4:01] - Lockdowns and quarantines exacerbated an already high use of technology at home. [5:08] - Dr. Dilley shares some of the issues high use of technology can cause. [6:22] - Anxiety has a complex relationship with isolation. [7:55] - We are just scratching the surface of mental health effects. What will the ripple effect be with academics? [9:03] - Kids having to learn to read remotely during the pandemic, especially those who have learning differences, are likely to get looked over. [11:29] - There are unique risk factors of tech use for those with ADHD and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. [13:36] - Technology could also be used as an escape for struggling students. [15:27] - Trust your gut as a parent. If you are concerned that your child is spending too much time using technology, look into it. [16:55] - Kids are going to push back. [18:31] - “Screen time” encompasses so many types of use like television, social media, phone use, video games, and more. [19:54] - What are the physiological and psychological effects of screen time? There are differences depending on the quality of the screen time. [21:30] - There is a very complex relationship between the use of technology and the possible effects it has. [22:58] - After about 3 hours, the benefits of gaming diminish. [23:58] - Playing a video game as a team for 2 hours is much different than scrolling through Instagram for 2 hours. [26:26] - The methods in his book have been recommended to parents by their own children.  [27:27] - Going back to school could be a great time to reset the guidelines around technology use at home. [29:34] - There are ways to communicate with your child or adolescent that can place boundaries on technology use. [30:41] - This isn't a quick process and it can be difficult. [31:31] - It is much easier to just put the kids in front of the screen, especially the younger ones. Today, Melanie talks with Dr. Kim Le, a child and adolescent psychiatrist based in Adelaide, Australia. He completed his psychiatry training in New South Wales and in 2015, Dr. Le received a federal grant to collaborate with an Internet Gaming Addiction Clinic for teenagers in Singapore. He has a special interest in “Gaming Disorder," which was recognized by the World Health Organization in 2018 as a mental health disorder. Dr. Le shares his professional journey that led to his interest and passion in treating families struggling with gaming addiction, and he is committed to increasing community awareness of the negative effects of online games on a child's development. Melanie and Dr. Le discuss how the game designers capitalize on the business aspect of video games that leads to the scientific development of the immersive design that hooks the player. Dr. Le introduces the idea of "The Hero's Journey" archetype that appears to meet the psychological needs of children that disconnects them from reality. They discuss why moderation is not encouraged, but rather to change the focus on family values in changing your family's routines. Identification and prevention of screen addiction is also discussed as Dr. Le shares stories of families he has worked with struggling to address issues of gaming addiction with their children. Description Gaming disorder is characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour (‘digital gaming' or ‘video-gaming'), which may be online (i.e., over the internet) or offline, manifested by: impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences. The behaviour pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning. The pattern of gaming behaviour may be continuous or episodic and recurrent. The gaming behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe. Recently the World Health Organization added Gaming Disorder to the 11th International Classification of Diseases ICD-11 3 a tool for diagnosing diseases. Combine this with the many parents dismayed by their childrens obsession with the video game Fortnite, and it seems that the game industrys darkest demons are being exposed. More than two billion people play video games worldwide and in America there are 221 million Americans who play video games. This is where God calls believers to be salt and light. We cannot responsibly exercise this calling to reach all kinds of people including gamers with the truth of Christianity without honestly striving to understand gaming. As image bearers, what place do video games have in our lives? Hundreds of studies in recent years have attempted to ascertain a connection between aggression and violent video games. Despite all this effort, there is no real consensus among researchers on the impact of virtual violence on aggressive behavior. So should Christians play or allow their children to play violent video games? And if many video games, when played in moderation or played socially, can have a positive impact on our lives, how do Christians encourage responsible, age appropriate engagement so that we might capitalize on the best that games have to offer?
