African Wenge is an odd species and I use it to illustrate the exceptions to the rules about technical properties. Its a popular species due to its dark color and its use as an alternative to Ebony. Also covered in this episode: faux figure, burnishing, and property changes due to growing conditions.
I dive into my inbox and answer some questions on this episode. Including several questions about drying lumber, Wenge, and rift & quarter sawing.
She woke up disoriented in the dark. She didn't know where she was… oh god, what's that awful smell? Her hand was touching something sticky on the ground. When her eyes slowly adjusted to the dark she saw - bodies. Dead bodies. Stacked on top of each other. Some of their faces were frozen still as if they were still screaming. The stickiness on her hand? The bodies coming together and forming a sticky sludge filled with maggots. Now the question - how would she escape the dungeon?
Question 1: From Al: I am having some trouble laying out the pins and tales on the Wenge in the more traditional way, unlike what Mike shows. Wenge is extremely hard and not at all forgiving and the grain tends to be a problem in scribing the wood. Perhaps this is why he choose to do this with the table saw and router methods as shown on Rough Cut. Where can I get the table saw blade and the router bit to do it like Mike. He always has great ideas that are very valuable. The Whiteside router bit Mike mentions can be found here Question 2: From Madison: I was wondering how long it took Mike to build the tea box featured in magazine issue 269. Dovetailed Tea Box by Michael Pekovich #269–July/August 2018 Issue Segment: Ben: Steam bending everything! Question 3: From Matt: How would someone go about preparing kumiko strips without a tablesaw or drum sander? Every two weeks, a team of Fine Woodworking staffers answers questions from readers on Shop Talk Live, Fine Woodworking‘s biweekly podcast. Here's an awesome Roger Stallion Singlecut 5 bass. This is a quick sound demo with some backing tracks, a full review coming soon. For the recording I had the Pope preamp on and have the treble and bass boosted just a tiny bit, with both pickups on and no other EQ. I also used my A-desigs REDDI and my Universal Audio 1176 into my Apogee Duet for the Direct recording. The only effect is a slight amount of limiting during mixdown to keep everything even, other than that its just the super fat sounding bass tone. Roger Stallion SC5 Specifications: Flame Redwood top, 3 piece maple neck with light flame, Wenge fretboard and Ramp, Maple tone block, Mahogany body, Ulyate Humcancelling pickups, Pope Flex Core Preamp, and DR Pure Blue Strings.
