I have been out with my students a lot in the past month and a half and it seems that every time we go out we are looking to the trees and shrubs that are growing in disturbed areas and likening these disrupted habitats to post glacial landscapes. Some of my students are able to recognize the similarities between an urban construction/destruction site, and some are still picking it up. I always do my best to explain what I am seeing, I still don't know much and wanted to go a little bit deeper, as always. For this show I share some of what I am learning about the migration of trees and different flora through southern Ontario after the glaciers receded. On top of this, I wanted to note how these development sites also hold hope, and set examples for wild rejuvenation through random ecological assemblages and novel ecosystems in the face of uncertain futures of changing climates and infrastructure degradation. Please appreciate the fun title as well.To learn more : After the Ice Age by E. Our Building Better Managers research identified that employees care about having an empathetic manager, but only half reported having a manager who was fair and empathetic. All is not lost. Empathy is a skill, and like any other skill, it can be developed. So what might that process involve? In this episode of The Mindtools L&D Podcast, Loren Sanders joins Ross G and Gemma to discuss: the difference empathy makes developing self-awareness to develop empathy tact as the expression of empathy. Before visiting a church or following an online pastor, make sure you ask the hard questions about who Jesus is, how salvation works, and whether the church stands on biblical truth or cultural compromise. In this episode, C.L. Whiteside breaks down five red-flag beliefs that should make you run from any church that twists Scripture, promotes deception, or leads people away from the truth that sets them free.
Recording on the road at the Canadian Biblical Counseling Coalition in Oakville, Ontario, Michael interviews biblical counselor Alysia Whiteside of Deep Roots Biblical Counseling. Whiteside shares her conversion in 2018, her interrupted plans to pursue medicine amid severe ulcerative colitis, multiple surgeries, and a permanent ileostomy, and how God redirected her into biblical counseling training and certifications. Her breakout topic, “Held But Not Yet Healed: Christ in the Midst of Physical and Mental Suffering,” frames chronic illness as “embodied suffering” that integrates physical, mental, and spiritual burdens and raises the question of who God is when healing does not come. Using Psalm 13, she explains a lament framework—turn, complain, ask, trust—leading to praise, emphasizing the “already but not yet” tension of hope amid suffering and encouraging sufferers and caregivers to write their own laments to rehearse God's character and respond faithfully.00:00 Welcome and Road Update01:30 Meet Alysia Whiteside02:26 Her Health Journey and Calling04:30 Training and Narsegesis06:14 Held But Not Yet Healed06:34 Reading Psalm 1308:29 Embodied Suffering and Hope12:18 Lament Framework Explained14:57 Trust and Gods Hesed19:05 Counseling the Stuck20:57 Write Your Own Lament23:26 Singing Joy in Suffering26:12 Encouragement for Chronic Pain27:16 Final Thanks and Wrap UpEpisode MentionsDeep Roots Biblical Counseling

Leadership Beyond the Manual: Mastering the Franchise Journey with Steve WhitesideIn a recent episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur Podcast, host Josh Elledge sat down with Steve Whiteside, the President of flc.rocks, to discuss the often-ignored psychological and leadership hurdles of owning a franchise. While most people enter the world of franchising for the "business in a box" appeal, Steve—the author of The Happy Franchisee—explains that an operations manual cannot replace the strategic vision and emotional intelligence required to lead a team effectively. This conversation provides a vital roadmap for franchisees who feel stuck in the "hustle" and are looking to transition from reactive operators to purposeful leaders who enjoy both profitability and personal freedom. The Symbiotic Success Framework: Balancing Leadership, Culture, and ProfitThe franchise model is frequently marketed as a turnkey solution, but the gap between buying a system and running a successful organization is often bridged by leadership skills that franchisors rarely teach. Steve Whiteside points out that while a manual can dictate how to make a product, it fails to explain how to inspire a diverse workforce or how to navigate the isolation that many entrepreneurs feel. To move beyond mere survival, franchisees must treat their business as a leadership laboratory, supplementing the franchisor's operational guidelines with their own strategic playbook for team development and local culture. This transition requires a shift in identity; the owner must move from being the most hardworking employee in the building to becoming the architect of a system that thrives even in their absence.A thriving franchise ecosystem depends on a healthy, two-way relationship between the brand and its local owners, yet communication often breaks down into transactional frustration. Steve emphasizes that balance is a non-negotiable metric for long-term success; those who succumb to the "24/7 hustle" myth usually suffer from poor decision-making and high employee turnover. By auditing their time and delegating low-impact tasks, owners can protect their mental bandwidth and focus on high-level growth levers like community building and peer support. Engaging in peer forums or advisory councils allows franchisees to break the silo of isolation, offering a space where they can share best practices and find accountability with others who understand the unique constraints of their specific brand. To help owners diagnose where they truly stand, Steve developed the Franchise Health Indicator, a tool designed to measure the five critical pillars of leadership, communication, revenue flow, cash flow, and profits. Many business owners are "flying blind," looking only at top-line sales while ignoring the underlying structural cracks in their culture or cash management. By utilizing data-driven assessments, franchisees can move from "guessing" to "knowing," allowing them to implement specific improvements that stabilize the business and increase its valuation. Ultimately, the goal is to build a business that serves the owner's life, rather than one that consumes it, ensuring that the dream of entrepreneurship doesn't turn into a high-priced job.About Steve WhitesideSteve Whiteside is the President of the Franchise Leadership Center and a seasoned entrepreneur who has successfully owned and operated multiple franchise locations. With a doctorate in leadership and years of hands-on experience, Steve has dedicated his career to helping franchisees find happiness and high performance in their business ventures. He is a sought-after speaker, facilitator, and the author of The Happy Franchisee, a guide focused on the human side of the franchise industry.About flc.rocksflc.rocks (Franchise Leadership Center) is a dedicated resource hub designed to empower franchise owners through leadership training, peer forums, and diagnostic tools. The organization provides the "Franchise Health Indicator," a confidential assessment that helps owners identify operational and leadership gaps. By focusing on the development of the individual franchisee, flc.rocks helps brands strengthen their entire network through improved communication and personal development.Links Mentioned in This EpisodeFranchise Leadership Center Official Website: flc.rocksSteve Whiteside on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/stevewhiteside/Key Episode HighlightsThe Leadership Gap: Why following a franchise manual isn't enough and how to develop the "soft skills" necessary for team management. The Hustle Myth: Breaking the cycle of 12-hour workdays by prioritizing delegation and intentional self-care.Symbiotic Relationships: How open communication and feedback loops between franchisors and franchisees drive system-wide innovation.Peer Power: The strategic advantage of joining forums to gain accountability and emotional support from fellow entrepreneurs. The Health Indicator: Using a data-backed assessment to audit your business's leadership, cash flow, and profit margins.ConclusionThe conversation with Steve Whiteside highlights that operational manuals are only the beginning of the franchise journey. Success is ultimately determined by an owner's ability to lead a team, maintain personal balance, and leverage community support to build a resilient, profitable, and happy business environment.More from The Thoughtful Entrepreneur

Send us Fan MailAlex Rutledge and the American Roots Outdoors crew welcome back hillbilly barber, outdoor writer, and river conservationist Richard Whiteside from Donovan, Missouri for a packed episode. The guys kick off with a discussion on a controversial Illinois bill that would tax ammunition and require serial numbers on every round — and what it could mean for hunters across the Midwest. Then they dive deep into the 2026 spring turkey season: why gobblers are quiet, how the warm weather has pushed the breeding cycle weeks ahead, and what that means for hunters heading into youth season. Richard shares gripping stories of outsmarting pressured birds, including a gobbler that took three days to pattern, and the moment he realized sometimes you have to "deer hunt" a turkey. The crew also covers the River Master's Elite Series smallmouth bass tournament schedule, plus details on Richard's Current River County Line Trash Bash cleanup event. In the bonus segment: wild turkey recipes, raising heritage breed turkeys, a father-son hunting lesson, and a closing scripture to cap off a great show.Chapter Markers:1:26 — Show Open & Introductions3:38 — Illinois Hunting Tax Proposal7:02 — Sports Update: Cardinals, Royals & NCAA Tournament10:18 — Segment 2: Richard Whiteside on Turkey Hunting12:12 — Turkey Population & Breeding Season Observations21:57 — Segment 3: Hunting Tough Gobblers & Spur Length23:42 — Memorable Turkey Hunts & Hunting Strategy25:51 — Current River Cleanup Event39:49 — Bonus Segment: Patience, Wild Turkey Recipes & Final Stories42:40 — Wild Turkey Cooking Tips with RichardMissouri Hunting Heritage Federation:https://www.mhhf.us/To follow American Roots Outdoors Podcast:https://www.facebook.com/groups/448812356525413To learn more about American Roots Outdoors:https://americanrootsoutdoors.com/https://www.facebook.com/AmericanRootsOutdoors/To follow Alex Rutledge:https://www.facebook.com/americanrootsalex/To follow Wayne Lach:https://www.facebook.com/wayne.lach.5To follow Mike Crase:https://www.facebook.com/mike.crase
In this episode of The Truth In This Art, returning guest Esteban Whiteside is back!Who is Esteban Whiteside: A Durham, North Carolina-based artist, Esteban Whiteside creates bold social commentary through what he calls "concrete oppressionism"—work that confronts American cultural absurdities with childlike aesthetics, parody, and irreverent humor. Working across canvas, wood, and sculpture, his art is both therapy and truth-telling, making heavy subjects digestible through wit and visual directness inspired by artists like Jacob Lawrence.Esteban talks about his creative evolution since our last conversation, including his new clock series exploring history and revolutions, and how he balances tackling heavy subject matter with abstract work that lets him breathe. We dive into why he uses humor to shame oppression, the colors that make him happy (brilliant blue, yellow, and emerald green), and how his art reflects his personality—chill in person, but uncompromising when it comes to speaking truth. He shares stories about drawing daily lunchbox notes for his daughter that sparked the clock series, unconventional painting techniques (like writing text upside down or left-handed), and why Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series opened the door for him to become an artist. He reflects on the importance of making art accessible at every price point and staying true to his voice no matter what may come with that. For updates, follow @estebanwhiteside on Instagram and visit estebanwhiteside.com.Revisit Esteban's first interview on The Truth In This Art here. This episode breaks down the fundamental ethical principles lawyers must navigate when their duty to clients conflicts with their obligation to the justice system. We explore core rules, real-world scenarios, and the evolving challenges posed by technology and complex cases. When does a lawyer's duty of loyalty to a client give way to the pursuit of truth in court? Surprisingly often — and understanding the rules that govern this tension could be your biggest advantage on exam day. This episode reveals the hidden principles and future challenges that define legal ethics at the highest level.Imagine sitting in court, knowing your client's testimony is false, and facing an impossible choice: stay silent or expose a lie that could destroy their case—and their freedom. The core dilemma isn't just about honesty; it's about safeguarding the integrity of justice itself. We unpack the critical trilemma identified by Professor Monroe Friedman, which forces lawyers into a seemingly impossible position—are they loyal to their client, the confidentiality of information, or the court's pursuit of truth? You'll learn how the rules of candor, confidentiality, and fairness interconnect and what happens when they clash. In this episode, you'll discover:The precise boundaries of Rule 3.3 (candor to the tribunal), including how “knowing” is interpreted and what mitigating circumstances exist when facts change after submission. The step-by-step process for dealing with client lies—from private remonstration, to seeking withdrawal, to mandatory disclosure—guided by pivotal cases like Nix v. Whiteside. How ex parte proceedings demand full disclosure of adverse facts and why that transforms the lawyer's role when an emergency hearing is at stake. The intricacies of client perjury: when a lawyer must confront an outright lie on the stand, and how constitutional protections like the Sixth Amendment interact with ethical duties. Why disclosing adverse legal authority (Rule 3.3(a)) is non-negotiable, even if it weakens your case, and how to strategically use it to bolster your credibility. The prohibitions on evidence tampering, witness inducements, and false testimony, including what constitutes improper payments, contingent fees, and the ethical pitfalls surrounding expert witnesses. The profound importance of disclosure in criminal prosecutions—how prosecutors' duties under Brady, Giglio, and Rule 3.8 ensure justice isn't sacrificed for conviction wins.Looking forward, this episode also challenges you to consider how emerging AI technologies threaten to blur the lines of what constitutes “knowledge” and “knowing.” As evidence generation becomes more automated and less verifiable, the rules governing truth and deception will be tested in unprecedented ways.Perfect for exam takers and practicing lawyers alike, this deep dive arms you with a clear, practical framework—mental checklists to handle ethical dilemmas when your professional duties pull in opposite directions. At the core, it's about defending the integrity of the legal process, even when it feels like the right thing to do is the hardest.Whether you're mastering the ethics rules or preparing for your toughest questions, this episode will elevate your understanding of the role of the lawyer as both zealous advocate and officer of the court—and why that balance is crucial for justice.
Guest Bill Whiteside abandoned a 30-year career in software sales to devote his time to a story that he started researching to keep his mind engaged during his business travels. Intrigued by a little-known incident from early in Winston Churchill's first term as Britain's Prime Minister, this diversion evolved into an obsession as he dug into the story of a controversial and catastrophic clash between the British and French Navies from multiple angles. The more he learned, the more it became a book he just had to write. That book, Operation Catapult: Winston Churchill and the British Attack on the French Navy at Mers-el-Kébir, was published by the U.S. Naval Institute Press in March 2026. Summary In this episode, Jeff talks with author Bill Whiteside about his new book, Operation Catapult, which describes a little-known but dramatic episode early in World War II. Whiteside explains that after France fell to Germany in May 1940, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill feared that the powerful French fleet might fall into Nazi hands. Determined to prevent this strategic disaster, Churchill ordered the British Navy to confront the French fleet anchored at Mers-el-Kébir in Algeria. When negotiations failed, British ships opened fire on their former allies, killing nearly 1,300 French sailors. Whiteside describes how the story captivated him because it reveals the moral complexity and human drama behind major historical decisions. Rather than presenting events as simple or inevitable, his research shows how Churchill agonized over the decision, how British officers struggled with the prospect of attacking friends, and how individual personalities shaped the outcome. Whiteside emphasizes that history becomes compelling when readers see historical figures as people—leaders balancing duty, fear, loyalty, and uncertainty in moments of crisis. The conversation also explores Whiteside's research process as a non-professional historian. Drawing on archives in the U.K. and California, original letters, and memoirs, he reconstructed the perspectives of both British and French participants. Influenced by narrative historians like Laura Hillenbrand and Rick Atkinson, Whiteside has crafted a fast-moving, character-driven account. Ultimately, the book explores leadership under extreme pressure and invites readers to reconsider a controversial decision that may have helped ensure Britain's survival during one of the war's most vulnerable moments. The Essential Point Whiteside argues that history becomes truly meaningful when we move beyond headlines and dates to understand the human decisions, personalities, and moral dilemmas that shape events. Rams Week Arrives With a Thin Secondary The Detroit Lions turn from a satisfying win over Dallas to a brutal test. The Los Angeles Rams bring Matthew Stafford, Davante Adams, and Puka Nakua. That is elite NFL firepower. Detroit's secondary is shredded. Terrion Arnold is on IR. Brian Branch is out for the season after Achilles surgery. The Detroit Lions will miss his burst and instincts. Eight to twelve months is the window. Explosiveness is the concern. Kirby Joseph has not played since Cincinnati. A knee has stalled him for two months. It is extremely unlikely he plays this week. Even if he suits up, rust would be real. That leaves a patchwork back end. DJ Reed is back and looked spryer against Dallas. Amik Robertson has been targeted and tested. Some of that is opponent selection. Some of that is the lack of reliable safety help. Rakusin can fight through contact. He can body up bigger wideouts like Nakua. He has seen Adams before. There is a path to competence on the outside if leverage and help are right. Depth could matter. Names like Dorsey and Whiteside linger as emergency snaps. Thomas Harper has played decent ball and may need to stabilize the middle. Stafford, Nakua, Adams vs What's Left The Detroit Lions Podcast focused on a simple truth. Stafford punishes hesitation. The Rams offensive line is steady. Alrick Jackson is playing fantastic at tackle. That buys time for layered concepts. It also stresses communication for new safety pairings. With Branch and Joseph out, spacing must be clean. Angles must be precise. Miss a tackle and a chunk play follows. Context matters. The Rams play on Thursday night against Seattle. Short week. Division pressure. That can influence game flow. If the Detroit Lions jump early, Los Angeles might conserve for the NFC West fight ahead. No one is suggesting they look past Detroit. But the clock and next week exist. Start fast and force a choice. How Detroit Can Steer This Game The Cowboys arrived hot. They could not keep up with the Lions. That is the template. Score first. Make the Rams one dimensional. Then protect the corners with smart safety landmarks. Keep Nakua in front. Make Adams win with contested catches. Rally and tackle. Reed must stack another clean game. Robertson needs better bracket timing. Rakusin has to turn physicality into reroutes, not flags. Harper's consistency matters on third down. Communication is the currency. One bust against Stafford can flip the script. This is not pretty. It is resilient. The Detroit Lions can live with completions if they choke off yards after catch and finish red zone snaps. A couple of early stops, one takeaway, and the offense can tilt the field. December football is about surviving matchups. The path is narrow, but it is there for Detroit Lions fans to believe in this week against the Rams. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEgkNrvNoEU #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #matthewstafford #pukanakua #davanteadams #alrickjackson #ramsoffensiveline #shortweekvsseattle #brianbranchachillessurgery #terrionarnoldir #kirbyjosephknee #djreed Learn more about your ad choices.
