While Karen cooks Anne Varner stirs up trouble with the awful story of the murders of Susan (Missy) MacIvor and her husband Michael. While the sisters enjoy the kitchen yummies, Karen DeVanie bewilders us with the tale of a nefarious killer in Nebraska.  Oh and Karen renames the state because...why not?! #nebraska #floridakeys #bananasfoster #rum #flambe #icecream

It is truly a joy to be able to share the second part of my conversation with the wonderful Karen Hurd. In today’s episode I ask Karen to explain the gut-brain connection and why beans have the power to heal disease and hormonal imbalance. While Karen often dives heavily into the science, I really recommend you stick with it - it’s so fascinating and I was blown away by her knowledge.I ask the questions we all want the answers to like what would happen if we cut out sugar from our diets, the impact of caffeine and even de-caffeinated coffee on our bodies and whether we should bother taking probiotics. Karen also explains the science behind why endometriosis, PCOS and PMS are all FIXABLE situations. IN MY OWN TIME: A PORTRAIT OF KAREN DALTON explores Karen’s early days in Oklahoma where she experienced the harsh realities of growing up during the Great Depression and follows her through more than two decades at the margins of popular music. With two ex-husbands and two children by the time she was eighteen, she rejected the life of a housewife and set off for New York City. Constantly struggling to find her audience yet too close to her own music to compromise, Karen’s negotiations with fortune and fame were complex, but one thing is clear, she lived the music. While Karen projected a tough exterior, as a musician she was fragile and rife with insecurity. IN MY OWN TIME: A PORTRAIT OF KAREN DALTON focuses on Karen’s difficulties in pursuing success while trying to maintain a pure relationship with the creative process. Through stories from her closest friends, family and collaborators, combined with Karen’s rarely seen personal journals and poetry. We dive deep into the existential struggles she faced, and that ultimately led to her drug use and an untimely death due to AIDs related illness. Co-directors Richard Peete and Robert Yapkowitz join us to talk about an artist who eschewed the spotlight, admired by her peers, difficult to know and the creator of a body of work that will inspire others for as long as music is made. In this podcast we talk to housing experts and advocates about what measures should be introduced in the coming Budget 2021 to protect tenants and provide social and affordable housing. The Government allocated 2.6bn to spending on housing in last year's Budget. This is just 3% of total Government expenditure. Is it time to prioritise housing? We are joined by Dr Karen Murphy, Director of Policy, the Irish Council for Social Housing, Eoin O Broin TD, Sinn Fein Housing Spokesperson and Ann-Marie O Reilly, Policy Officer with Threshold. They outline their Budget proposals including a significant increase in investment in public housing - social, affordable and cost rental. Eoin O Broin calls for a 2.8 billion capital budget - on new social and affordable housing and makes the point that this is the time for a major transformative investment in public housing building, and explains why the proposed shared equity scheme will not provide affordable housing. The housing crisis continues during the COVID Pandemic - but the state can borrow at zero interest rates and there is capacity and developments that the state can draw on as the private sector is reducing building and investing. Threshold propose measures for rent arrears, re-introducing the evictions moratorium, ringfencing 20% of the homelessness budget for prevention and allocating the budget to hold a Referendum on the Right to Housing. While Karen outlines the ICSH pre-budget submission including sending out the clear support for long term investment in social and cost rental housing. On today's show we have Karen Bone and Morgan Hodge. Growing up in Western Canada, Karen was part of a super active family. She was a dancer and outdoors enthusiast, but when type 1 diabetes entered into her life as a young adult, she had a new challenge to deal with. While Karen was super strict with her health and making sure she was militant in keeping her health in check, she hid her type 1 diagnosis from the world. It wasn't until a trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa that Karen truly accepted her reality and felt comfortable being public with that diagnosis. We talk quite a bit about Karen's hike up Mt Kilimanjaro with a team of other type 1s, and that segment we discuss preparation, the challenges associated with a week long hike up and down the tallest mountain in Africa, and the challenges she faced with insulin dosing and fluctuating blood sugars in the changing conditions Kilimanjaro is known for. We then move on to discuss Karen's climb up the Tour de Mont Blanc, which is in the French, Italian and Swiss Alps. It was during that trek that she faced significant mental challenges including how to deal with dramatic temperature swings and difficult climbing conditions including narrow ice ridges, and her fear of being swept down the mountain by a river formed of melting snowpack.  Our conversation then shifts to Karen's husband, Morgan, who is a kinesiologist and coach. Because of Karen's day to day with type 1, Morgan has taken a keen interest in how different modes of training require varied preparation. Morgan, being a self-proclaimed 'geek' when it comes to stuff like this, shares what he has learned about Karen and type 1 when it comes to steady state training, high intensity interval training, and resistance training. This is a unique look at how one type 1 athlete and her scientist husband have started to make sense of what can be a pretty fuzzy area for many of us with type 1. We do get a bit deep in science at times, but if you're an athlete or if you're training for something, I think this offers us a great look into different types of training and a number of the variables we should all be considering to optimize our training. This is a conversation of taking on challenge and expanding the boundaries of our comfort zone. It's also a discussion on the importance of monitoring our bodies and recognizing patterns during training so we can take on those challenges.

Karen Eddington is a comedian, speaker, researcher, and the author of Understanding Self-Worth. She uses her experience in stand-up comedy and improv to teach laughter as a form of self-care.   For 15 years, Karen has researched identity to look for patterns and create original solutions that help people “Under Pressure.” Although The Under Pressure Project started as an effort to understand the biggest pressures faced by teens, it has grown into a mission to heal the most universal and dangerous experience we all share.   The one thing that we all have in common, which Karen describes as “the most universal and dangerous experience we can have,” is mental isolation: The times we feel alone in our mind because we feel diminished, flawed, or excluded   The best solution for getting through this terrible but universal experience is to develop a support network, and anyone can learn how to create supportive communities by practicing comedy.   Comedy vs Pressure   While Karen was researching The Under Pressure Project, she was also getting into comedy for the first time, and she started making some useful connections. She was able to bring in comedy to relieve that pressure and isolation.   As we’ve mentioned on the podcast before, the principles of improvisation and comedy are incredibly powerful in networking situations, professional environments, and just regular ol’ social situations. One extremely powerful tool that Karen likes to use is shared laughter: those moments where we connect as humans through vulnerability and humor.   When you combine Karen’s research with a repertoire of practiced comedic tools (like misdirection or Yes, And), you can learn how to create experiences of shared laughter in any situation, and as a result, create communities that support each other; you can heal mental isolation.   “Laughter heals and strengthens us, when sometimes nothing else can.” –Karen Eddington Resources: Learn more at KarenEddington.com Watch Karen’s TEDxTalk: “The connecting power of shared laughter” Watch Karen’s speaking & stand-up -- Production & Development for Improv Is No Joke by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices. While Karen and myself rather enjoyed it, in spite of the perceived holes, many feedbackers did not. After a thorough discussion of the events in this episode, which held strong parallels to a game of chess, we were still in agreement that this was one of the better episodes of the season.
