In this episode, Dave Nason demonstrates how to create and use text replacements, short snippets of text which are substituted with frequently used words, sentences, or emojis when typed, on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. This may be useful if you, for example, need to frequently give people directions to your home. Rather than manually type out the directions, you could configure a text replacement so that several sentences could be inserted simply by typing a few characters of your choosing. You may also wish to use it to speed up typing longer words, or even to type emojis that you use regularly.On iOS and iPadOS, text replacements can be created and managed in Settings > General > Keyboard > Text replacement. Here, you can double-tap an item to edit it, or delete it using the "Delete" rotor action. To create a text replacement, double-tap the Add button in the upper right corner, type or paste the word, sentence, or emoji you want inserted in the "Phrase" field, type the text snippet in the "Shortcut" field, and double-tap Save.On macOS, text replacements can be created and managed in System Settings > Keyboard > Text replacements. With the Gemini app on your phone, you can type, talk or add an image for all kinds of help: you can take a picture of your flat tire and ask for instructions on how to change it, or get help writing that thank you note. It's an important first step in building a true AI assistant - one that is conversational, multimodal and helpful. To access Gemini on Android, download the Gemini app or opt in through Google Assistant, and you'll be able to use Gemini by corner swiping, hitting the power button on select phones, or saying "Hey Google." This will enable a new overlay experience that offers easy access to Gemini as well as contextual help right on your screen. Many loved voice features in Google Assistant will be available through the Gemini app - including setting timers, making calls and setting reminders - and there will be more support in the future. On iOS, access is being rolled out to Gemini right from the Google app over the next couple of weeks. Dr Andrew has spent decades as a GP doctor working for the NHS in England but 15 years ago he decided to start learning about the Human Givens approach alongside his clinical practice. Human Givens approach is a therapy that takes a truly bio-psycho-social approach towards emotional and mental wellbeing. I first learnt about Human Givens from my mother who studied the approach too and I honestly think it's one of the best frameworks to understanding our emotional needs as humans. In this episode we dive into the brain and body connection and we discuss why physical factors can create emotional and mental challenges and why a lot of advice about health is contradictory and distorted by vested interests. Dr Andrew sifts the sense from the nonsense making it easier to think clearly about how our brain and body work together. By 2019 the average person checks their emails 75 times a day and the average worker sends 126 emails per day - that is one every four minutes. Acorns’ growth starts with strong product/market fit and the worthy mission of overcoming the challenges that millennials face with investing. Their solution makes it easy to get started with your first small investment in only five minutes. This includes the time it takes to download the app, create an account, connect your bank and credit card accounts and make your first investment. Once you’ve completed your first investment, Acorns also automates continuous micro-investments via an approach they call roundups. This low friction approach to investing has attracted over 5 million passionate investors to the platform. Growth is primarily driven by brand advocates which can be seen with their strong app store reviews. On iOS alone, Acorns has attracted nearly 500,000 reviews with an average rating of 4.7. Hila previously led growth lead at GrowthHackers.com. When she joined Acorns it was in a retention leadership role. She soon made the case that the activation lever was a critical driver of retention so she was tasked with managing this lever as well. From there she was promoted to VP of Growth and now has a dedicated growth team of 15 people. The growth team did not replace the marketing team. There is still a marketing team that manages brand and PR. THX tune-up to the Rescue We had a friend recently who was complaining about their HDTV experience at home. They weren't seeing the quality they were hoping to see after upgrading their TV, and were contemplating returning it. In talking through it with them, we were able to convince them that perhaps the TV settings just needed to be dialed in to look great in their viewing room. They didn't want to spend money on a professional calibration, so we went to the trusty THX tune-up app to see what we could do. Install and Setup If you don't have THX tune-up, you should get it. We ran the iOS version for this exercise, but they also have an Android version as well. Both are free, so you spend a few seconds downloading and installing it and away you go. We can talk through the specific on setting up the iOS app, because it's the one we used, but many of the setup steps are the same. The basics are: install the app, launch it, connect it to your TV or AVR. On iOS you can connect it with HDMI or AirPlay. The app tells you that: “THX tune-up uses both your mobile device screen and your HDTV screen, making this an interactive 2nd screen application.” Of course you would assume that to calibrate the screen the app would need to put images on it. You can't calibrate it just by looking at pictures on the phone. We used HDMI to connect to the TV, which for iOS requires an AV adapter. Apple sells them for the lightning adapter and the old school 30 pin connector, so no matter what iOS device you have, you're covered. We used HDMI because we had the adapter and because HDMI allows you to test audio as well.  We didn't need the audio portion for this time, but if you want to get the full experience out of the app, picking up the adapter so you can connect with HDMI is the way to go. In this case a simple AirPlay mirroring would have worked great for calibrating the screen. So in a pinch, if you just want to dial in display settings, take an AppleTV with you to your friend's house and you'll be all set. There is an app setup step that allows you to tell the app what kind of equipment: Television, Projector, Receiver, etc. you're connected to. It is optional, but supposedly it could help dial in the tests for your particular gear. Use it if you want, skip it if you don't care. It really doesn't matter all the much.  Once you get setup, you can play the THX deep note through your system for giggles. It's a pretty cool way to demo your setup, but probably a bit janky to pull out the app just for that. If you hit the ‘Get Started' button on the home screen of the app it will play a short video that describes most of the test you can run and what the app will be doing to optimize your home theater experience. It describes the various picture adjustments and what you'll be doing to get them dialed in just right. Again, this step is totally optional. If you're new to TV settings and options, it's a cool primer on what you're about to do. If you are already familiar with the concepts of brightness, contrast, etc. you can skip it. Just jump directly to the ‘Adjustments' are of the app. Calibration We know this isn't a real calibration, and we'll probably get a few emails from the community on it, but there's just not a better word for use for it. Call it ‘TV setting optimization' if you like, but for simplicity we're going to call it calibration. The app has five picture adjustment tests and two audio settings tests, each in their own menu. We didn't use the audio tests this time, but we'll talk about them in a bit for completeness. In our case we walked through the Picture Adjustment options because that was all we really cared about. Picture The Picture Adjustment setting choices are: Aspect Ratio, Brightness, Contrast, Color, and Tint with a final option called ‘Review Adjustments' that allows you to review all the setting changes you made with different images/patterns to make sure they all worked as expected. The Aspect Ratio setting shows a pattern to make sure you're seeing enough of the screen and that shapes are the correct size.This eliminates issues with stretching and overscan. There's a circle in the middle of the pattern that quickly shows you if you're dealing with and stretching or distortion issues. Moving on from Aspect Ratio, you dive into Brightness. This make sure your screen isn't too dark. You want the screen to be as dark as possible without losing shadow detail or other parts of a dark image. From there you dial in Contrast. Contrast and Brightness are similar, but also quite different. You use Brightness to make sure you can see details in dark images. Contrast makes sure you can see white detail. You want to be able to see slight variations even in white images. With these two dialed in, the subtle details in your images should be much more visible. Now that you have dark and light dialed in, next you move on to Color. The color adjustment is used to make sure the colors on your TV are light and vibrant but don't look fake or cartoonish. For this one you need to use the camera to enable the red filter and then look through the phone at the image on your TV. This is actually a really cool way to dial in the color. For many calibration options you get a thin plastic film, either a red or blue filter, to do the same thing. But those are easy to lose or damage. The tint adjustment makes sure skin tones look good. THX recommends you don't adjust tint, saying that most TVs should stay right in the middle for tint. But the app does have a test you can run to make sure the middle is the right setting for you. Again this test uses your phone camera with the red filter to get things set correctly.  We ended up not changing tint at all. The last option in the Picture Settings menu is the ‘Review Adjustments' option. It shows a lot of the same patterns you saw before, all on one screen, and a new test image with a little bit of everything. The test image has a spherical object you can use to test stretching or distortion, some dark areas for shadow detail or brightness, some white clouds to test white color variations or contrast, and a bunch of bright, vivid colors to check color and tint. If you're happy with it, you're done. Sound The sound adjustment options in the app are Speaker Assignment and Speaker Phase. Assignment helps you make sure the intended sound is played through the intended speaker. The app can test 5.1 or stereo. It doesn't test 7.1 or anything more advanced. The Speaker Phase test allows you to determine accurately where a sound is coming from. If the speakers are out of phase, the test signals are harder to localize. This is a great test to run to make sure you wired everything up correctly. Conclusion The THX tune-up app is a great addition to your arsenal as a friendly HDTV expert for friends and family. It certainly isn't a match for a professional calibration, but it's great for a quick tune up for all those secondary TVs you have around the house. The picture settings are where the app really shines, so even if you don't have surround sound with those other TVs, the app still adds great value. For our friend, the TV absolutely looked better after running it through the app, but he still wasn't satisfied...unless we were streaming 4k from Netflix. For him, it could be an issue with the quality of his 1080/720 content from his provider, or a scaling limitation in the TV. Either way, he has to live with it or decide it's just too early for him to get into the 4k game.

A few months ago, we sent out a survey on a topic that appears to be the bane of many listeners' existence: digital clutter. Over one third of respondents told us that the thing that drives them MOST crazy – the biggest, worst, most frustrating clutter quagmire in their lives – is photos. We promised you a podcast and a plan of attack, and our word was good (if a little bit, um, enthusiastic – listen above). With the help of organizational guru Alan Henry, Deputy Editor of Lifehacker, we've put together a customized step-by-step system to help you back up, sort, and organize your digital photo collection for the long haul. By then end of this process, you're going to be scrolling through your pictures and contemplating the role photos really play in our lives. But first, the time has come to get your photos in shape. Seriously. Now. It'll be more fun than you think. Mostly. The Note to Self System For Decluttering Your Photos and Coming to Terms With Your Mortality I. The Basic ToolsII. Decide How Deep You Want to Go Steps for the Casual Snapshooter Steps for the Moderate Snapshooter Steps for the Enthusiastic Snapshooter Find Your Photos: A List of Places to Look III. Tell Us What You Found (Part Two!) The Basic Tools According to Alan, these are the terms, tools, and basic tricks you'll need to get started – though how far you go with them is up to you. See: Deciding How Deep to Go. Back-up services: This is a centralized place on the cloud where you can get to the raw files of your photos if you need to. Alan recommends Dropbox, but iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive or the like could serve a similar function, so long as you're willing to pay for extra storage. One work-around: sign up for an extra account just for photo storage purposes. Auto-upload: You have two options with your back-up service. The first is turning on the auto-upload feature, which means you'll be syncing the full-sized files to your computer. If you want to get these photos printed, use another service like Apple Photos or Picasa or Aperture, or plan to edit your photos with software such as Photoshop, this is a good idea. The other, more space-friendly option: leave that setting off, and instead be really judicious about how many of your photos you sync to your computer, or commit to going in and taking the ones you don't want down. This is going to take some introspection, some cutting-of-your-losses, and also maybe some back-up hardware. Back-up hardware: An external hard drive that can hold all of the files you don't want taking up space on your devices. It's the digital version of flossing your teeth. In this case, pick whatever works for you – if you've got less than 64 gigabytes of files you care about, a solid USB could work. If you've got a lot more than that (or if you just want to keep your options open), you should spring for an external hard drive. Photo management services: This is the service you'll use to help you categorize and sort through your pictures, whether that's by date, location, or content. Alan's favorite is Google Photos, which gives you unlimited space as long as your photos fall below a certain resolution (16 megapixels or 1080p HD video). You can set it so that Google will automatically reduce anything above that size to lower quality as well – for most people this should be just fine for organizing and digital-viewing purposes. From there, Google's photo categorization technology will help you label and organize the photos into albums and galleries. You could also choose a social media platform like Facebook or Instagram, you just have to commit to making them more or less public. Facial recognition: A type of deep learning used by such services as Google Photos to categorize and organize your photos. This comes with some very real caveats. Scanner: The best way to collect all your old physical photos and store them with your digitla photos. Alan says you can go high tech and buy a picture scanner (he recommends the Doxie or the Doxie Go WiFi) to scan them at home, or send them out to get scanned. Or – if you're OK with really low fidelity– you can just take a picture of the picture. Meta! Privacy/sharing settings: Be sure to double check that you're only sharing what you want to share, no matter which services you choose. That said, Alan Henry says his rule is to only upload the images he is OK with his friends and family seeing. The only way to absolutely ensure privacy (well, as much as we can possibly absolutely ensure privacy), is to avoid using the cloud altogether. In Alan's words: "As for what to snap and what not to snap - well, I'm not of the mindset that 'if you don't want it public you shouldn't take it or store it on the Internet' – that blames *people* for problems with *technology.* However, it's important to be mindful when you snap, and maybe take it into your own hands to choose what to upload and what not to, then back up or encrypt anything you want to save but don't want out of your reach to delete at any time. :)" via GIPHY Decide How Deep You Want to Go Alan thinks we all fit into one of three photo-taking categories: casual snapshooters, moderate snapshooters, and enthusiastic snapshooters. Figuring out which category you belong to will help you decide how far you really need to go in your personal photo-decluttering process.  You've been sorted! (Kristeli Zappa M./Note to Self) BUCKET 1: THE CASUAL SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics: You have a bunch of photos all over the place, but you're not as concerned about organizing the past as you are setting up a solid system for the future. You primarily take photos with your phone. Your goal is to go from disorganized to organized, not necessarily to group all of your photos in the same place. Your steps: Pick a system for automatic back-up. Download the app if you don't have it already. Turn on auto-upload. On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." That's it! Save your password somewhere safe. Invest in an external hard drive if you're feeling really responsible. Digital hygiene, everybody. Be sure to tell us what you've found. BUCKET 2: THE MODERATE SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics:  For the most part, your photos are already digital – just in a billion different places. You may have a few old phones, some SD cards from a DSLR or other high-end digital camera, but you're not terribly concerned with really old physical photos. You probably have hundreds (or maybe a couple thousand but no more than that) of photos you care about, and want them to be organized, both past and present. Your Steps:  Turn on auto upload for your back-up system of choice (i.e., Dropbox). On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." Choose your photo management service, and transfer the photos you care about the most into it (i.e. Google Photos.). Start hunting down the rest of the digital photos you really care about and pull them into your photo management service. Be judicious: What's really worth    migrating off of, say, that Flickr account you started and never went back to? Which Facebook Photos do you want to make sure you're saving in higher quality? Did you have a SmugMug account you need to check? Once you've uploaded the photos you care about most into this central service, look through the albums it has created for you. See where the system has sorted it correctly, and where it has gotten details wrong. Take over as the human here, and start adjusting into a system that will be meaningful to you. This can be as intense of a process as you choose, just be sure to label with names that will be memorable. (I.e., not “August 2015,” but “Trip to Paris With Family.”) This system should recognize dates and location at the very least. If they're wonky – and older photos probably will be – pick and choose which ones you care about correcting. Starting to sort through your photos will also help you jog your memory about any meaningful pictures you may have forgotten. Track them down, rinse, repeat. BUCKET 3: THE ENTHUSIASTIC SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics:  You have thousands of photos — probably more than Dropbox or Google Photos' drag-and-drop interfaces can handle in one go. You use multiple devices, including cameras with SD cards and phones. You're looking for all of your memories to be organized, both past and present. You might even want to organize all of the photos from the whole family's set of gadgets, like phones or tablets everyone uses. Your Steps: Pick a back-up system. Turn on auto-upload for your current and future photos. Let the current batch upload. This could take a few minutes. On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." Once you're done uploading, drag and drop as many of your already-digital but easily-accessible photos from your back-up system to your photo management system. For now, draw the line at your primary devices—the laptops or computers you already use, the phone you already use, and the SD card currently in your favorite camera you've been meaning to back up. Aim to get the majority of your current and most recent photos centralized. Once the bulk of your current photos are on your two services, spend some time getting in touch with your memories again, building galleries and doing searches through your most recent upload. Look through the albums your photo management service has created for you, and see where the system has sorted it correctly, and where it has gotten details wrong. Start sorting into albums that will be meaningful to you. This can be as intense of a process as you choose, just be sure to label with names that will be memorable. You're also teaching the system which details actually matter to you. From here, start hunting down old photos to add to the collection. Then, batch by batch, pull in old folders. Then, as you have the time, energy, or desire to centralize those old photos, you can power up that old laptop and upload them, or dump them to an external hard drive and upload them in batches (all of your old 2003 trip photos at once, for example.) This way you're making continual progress without committing yourself to a week-long wrestling match with the tendrils of Google and Dropbox every time you want to back-up your memories.  When you're as far as you're going to get for the moment... tell us what you've found!
