Yang Song was a 38-year-old sex worker living in Queens, NY. During a targeted police raid on the night of Nov. 25, 2017, she fell to her death from the balcony of her 4th-floor apartment. A year before, an undercover police officer raped her at gunpoint. After reporting the assault, Song was harassed by an NYPD vice squad, pressured to become an undercover informant, threatened with deportation and arrested and humiliated in multiple stings in the months before her death. Diffusion models have made significant breakthroughs in image, audio, and video generation, but they depend on an iterative generation process that causes slow sampling speed and caps their potential for real-time applications. To overcome this limitation, we propose consistency models, a new family of generative models that achieve high sample quality without adversarial training. They support fast one-step generation by design, while still allowing for few-step sampling to trade compute for sample quality. They also support zero-shot data editing, like image inpainting, colorization, and super-resolution, without requiring explicit training on these tasks. Consistency models can be trained either as a way to distill pre-trained diffusion models, or as standalone generative models. 2023: Yang Song, Prafulla Dhariwal, Mark Chen, Ilya Sutskever https://arxiv.org/pdf/2303.01469v1.pdf

Note: This episode includes discussions of sexuality, with some references to BDSM and kink. Howdy, y'all! Spencer and Jamie kick things off this week with a little HOT, SPICY, and SPIRITED debate (for us) on Armature Games' new surreal narrative adventure: Where the Heart Leads! Tumble into the time sinkhole with us as we delve into this 600,000-word everyday epic about a family man who finds himself reliving the formative moments of his life, including his present and even his future- and gains the ability to change them. Then we're joined by the wonderful Ana Valens, a writer and adult game developer who, in her words, "specializes in the intersection of sexuality and video games and what the two have to say about the other." UMM, how cool is that?! We unpack the capacity for games to engage with sexuality beyond providing titillation, from education, to self-expression, to helping us gain deeper understandings of our own desires and providing safe places to explore them. We interviewed Ana during Pride Month, so we also touch a bit on the last few decades of U.S. LGBTQ+ history and the importance of honoring and understanding kink's place in queer culture! It's truly an action-packed episode so thanks for reading this far but please stop and press play! Here's a really special episode for our listeners. We were going to split this up into a free and bonus part, but after the recording session we decided the entire conversation should be made free for all. New York State Assemblyman Ron T. Kim, representing New York's 40th District (incl. Flushing) joins us in an actual professional studio to talk about a spectrum of political issues which boil down to a single question: what are people worth in this world? From student debt cancellation, rejecting tax subsidies for Amazon and other megacorps, sex worker's right, revolutionizing criminal justice, and of course Andrew Yang and UBI. We discuss at length Yang Song, a sex worker who was victimized repeatedly by police before falling to her death during a police raid on her place of work. We also talk about the new generation of politically activated Asian American youth, and why indifference and inaction are no longer viable options.
