Exploitative work conditions faced by Indians in the Middle East is not new, but the recent reports emerging from Saudi Arabia's ambitious $500 billion Neom project are shocking: a recent documentary alleges that 21,000 foreign workers have died and 1,00,000 have gone missing since 2017, while working on projects that are part of the country's Vision 2030 initiative. Earlier this week Nadhmi al-Nasr, the long-time chief executive of the Neom project departed, and while there was no reason stated, reports indicate Mr. al-Nasr had earned a chilling reputation managing workers of the project. But despite sometimes horrific work conditions, multiple deaths and the continuing use of the kafala system, around nine million Indians continue to compete for jobs in the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. India has one of the highest remittances from its citizens working abroad, in the world, with the figure estimated at $111 billion as of 2022. And yet, policies and laws to protect migrant workers are scarce. Why do young Indians continue to go abroad for semi-skilled or unskilled work – are these last-resort options or are they still seen as lucrative employment offers? Why do there continue to remain minimal protections for those who go to these countries? Has the pattern of migration from India changed? And Does the Indian Emigration Act need an overhaul? Heller's Ayn Rand and the World She Made. Among the topics covered: The standards of objectivity that the biographies fail to meet; The authors' disregard for how Rand thought of herself and her work; Examples of the books' lack of objectivity; How the authors mishandled the biographies' sources; Why ignoring Rand's philosophy makes the books less interesting and intelligible. Recommended in this podcast are Journo's articles “‘Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right' Is Worse than Incompetent” and “Postscript: ‘Ayn Rand and the World She Made' Is an Exploitative, Tabloid Biography,” and Allan Gotthelf and Gregory Salmieri's book A Companion to Ayn Rand. Chicago house pioneer Vince Lawrence and law professor Dr. Olufunmilayo Arewa unpack how record companies have undermined Black musicians—and what we can do to enact change. This past week, Resident Advisor screened and distributed a new, award-winning documentary called Taking Back the Groove. It tells the story of Bronx-born disco legend Richie Weeks, whose song "Rock Your World" with Weeks & Co. climbed to #1 on the dance charts in the '80s. Like many Black artists throughout American recording history, his talent was strip-mined to enrich corporate record labels. In the film, Weeks and Still Music label owner Jerome Derradji narrate the story of how they clawed back the rights to Weeks's tracks, as well as the ongoing battle he's had to wage to restore his legacy and ownership over his creative work. This story is, sadly, perennial, especially for artists of colour and otherwise marginalised musicians who continue to be sidelined by major players in the music industry. In this RA Exchange, Vince Lawrence—a Chicago-based house producer and the original founder of Trax Records—speaks with Washington DC-based guest Dr. Funmi Arewa, a graduate of Harvard Law School and UC Berkeley, and a current professor at George Mason University, where she teaches business law in the creative industries. The two engage in a fascinating discussion about the history of the recording industry and the exploitation of marginalised artists that runs through its fabric. How do we make it easier for artists to claim things that are rightfully theirs? What if we could create incentives to create fairness at the core of how record labels function? Listen to their thoughts on these questions in the full episode.

Blaxploitation films are known for their Black stars, gritty material, and funk music. When they caught on in the early 1970s, these movies had a ton of style and iconic characters. At the time of their release, they were celebrated for their depictions of Black empowerment but also criticized for perpetuating stereotypes and caricatures of Black culture. The Boston Globe's chief film critic, Odie Henderson, has a new book about the history of the genre called “Black Caesars and Foxy Cleopatras: A History of Blaxploitation Cinema.” He talks to Shirley about revisiting these movies as an adult and the evolving representation of Blackness on screen. Poor Things, the new Yorgos Lanthimos film starring Emma Stone, has been racking up nominations and wins on this year's award circuit. But it also sparked a bit of controversy thanks to one major feature of its plot… So what is the film actually about, and is it empowering or exploitative? Here's what you need to know about Poor Things, those scenes, and the message the film is trying to convey!
Is it ok for tech firms to exploit other people's copyrighted work in order to develop artificial intelligence? AI routinely uses smart-learning to feed off existing internet content to train and develop its algorithms, and in many cases, that's someone's intellectual property. But is there a copyright issue here? One senior UK executive thinks so. Ed Newton-Rex was head of audio at the firm, Stability, which is based in the UK and US. But he's now resigned his post, saying he thought it was "exploitative" for any AI developer to use creative work without consent. The firm IBM has suspended all advertising on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, after a report said that IBM's ads were being placed next to posts praising Adolf Hitler and Nazism. Practice sessions at the Las Vegas Grand Prix have been disrupted by a manhole cover on the track. Two cars were damaged when a manhole came loose, prompting officials to temporarily suspend practice. The session was later restarted at 4 o-clock in the morning local time. Formula One spent more than six hundred million dollars ($621m) preparing for the race, but it's faced criticism - even from the current world champion, Max Verstappen.

It's a $97 billion global industry that has made its way into mobile phones, video games and laptops. Never before has porn been more accessible, and offered more variety, than the present day. And yet, some feminists want to revisit the question of whether it should exist at all. They say pornography exploits young women and creates unrealistic expectations in the bedroom. So many of society's worst problems – from pedophilia, to sexual assault, to gender inequality – are amplified by porn use. And with the advent of the internet and video streaming, children are able to access hardcore porn with few guardrails, leading to a generation of young men who are getting their sex education from unrealistic and exploitative sexual relationships portrayed onscreen. On the other side of the debate are those who see value in porn: research shows that men who watch porn value female pleasure more, couples who watch porn together have better sexual relationships, and LGBT folk report a greater sense of community acceptance. Porn, its defenders argue, is being used as a distraction when many of the problems related to the industry are already systemic in our everyday lives. And finally, attempting to ban porn would only drive it underground and increase the risk of exploitation. In their view, it's time to put the decades long debate over porn to bed, once and for all. Making it to the NFL is the dream of countless young boys and men across the nation. Less than 2-percent of college football players will make it to the NFL. For those who do make it, before they can don the uniform of a professional team and see those dreams realized, they must be selected in the NFL draft. Draft day is like winning the lottery for those selected to play on an NFL team, but the draft isn't without its critics who find the process dehumanizing. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and football executive Troy Vincent liken the process to a modern day slave auction. With the NFL draft taking place later this month, we check in with Dave Zirin, sports editor of The Nation and author of The Kaepernick Effect, about the state of its draft and how it stacks up against other professional sports.

Part 2 of Matthew's conversation with Sarah. Sarah grew up in the Church of Scientology. But she also grew up in a small town. And, in a neurodiverse family. We come from so many places. Exploitative, hierarchical, hypocritical. Generous, tender, and odd. It is an honor to present this installment of Listeners' Stories. We're tickled to learn that Sarah's awakening from Scientology was quickened by that South Park episode. And we're humbled to learn about how her mother, despite being deeply enmeshed in a coercive cult, still managed to kindle both compassion and common sense in her children.-- -- --Support us on PatreonPre-order Conspirituality: How New Age Conspiracy Theories Became a Health Threat: America | Canada Follow us on Instagram | Twitter: Derek | Matthew | JulianOriginal music by EarthRise SoundSystem
