The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th and final study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published at the end of 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Touted as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstore ownership. C.O.W.S.'s listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. Last week, we learned about how the 2000's signaled massive challenges for black bookstores with more competition from online and large bookstore chains. Then, the financial downturn of 2008 devastated many White and non-white bookstore owners. Karibu Books and Eso Won Books both eventually closed. But, the Sankofa Video Books & Café was able to fight off their $30,000 tax debt, and remains in business today. Adams says that many black bookstore saw a boon during the Racial protests of 2010s - such the police shootings of Michael Brown Jr., Eric Garner, & Rekia Boyd as well as the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin. This book concludes with a massive emphasis on Anti-Sex/LGBTQ activities. RuPaul and George M. Johnson's 'All Boys Aren't Blue,' - which is a so-called manifesto about being a "queer" black person, are celebrated. Adams documents some of the responses to the murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, which included a rash of buying books related to Racism and new book clubs. Interestingly, all of the new reading groups mentioned were formed by and for black females. Listeners and Gus question if this book, though filled with very important information, earns an 'F' letter grade for omitting Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and Neely Fuller Jr. and then glazing readers with Anti-Sex in the conclusion. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Author and veteran columnist Amy Sohn talks with Harry Siegel about her book, The Man Who Hated Women: Sex, Censorship, and Civil Liberties in the Gilded Age, and explains why the “zombie” Comstock Law still on the federal books kept coming up during 2024's presidential election. Sohn details how the lives of two “sex radicals,” Ida Craddock and Sarah Chase, were upended as they crossed paths with Anthony Comstock, the mutton-chopped celebrity behind the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice and self-described “friend of women” who boasted about driving his enemies to suicide. It's a story about how the government's original anti-sex law — suppressing information about birth control as a form of obscenity — created mechanisms used to this day to suppress unpopular thoughts.

“Taking care of yourself after sexual assault Common feelings There is no right or wrong way to feel if you have been sexually assaulted. Everyone reacts differently, and a range of emotions are all natural responses to trauma. Some common reactions to sexual assault include: Fear or anxiety of • Who to trust • A similar event happening again • Being left alone • Breaking down or losing control • About what might have happened (especially if you can't remember everything) Anger at • What has happened • A lack of support or understanding from others Helplessness • Feeling a loss of control over life, or that the world is a dangerous place Sadness for • Being hurt, emotionally and physically Guilt or self-blame • Feeling somehow responsible • Regret for things done and not done Shame • About what has happened Detached • Everything feeling unreal or strange Physical sensations Physical sensations are often reactions to stress and can develop several months after the event. Some common feelings include: Feeling tense or irritable, uptight or panicky Heart racing, or chest feeling tight Dizzy or lightheaded Stomach churning and loss of appetite Difficulty sleeping or nightmares Poor memory and concentration Difficulty making decisions Feeling depressed or low in mood Change in sex drive. Common thoughts and reactions “I feel numb” You may just feel numb. The event may seem unreal, like a dream, something that hasn't really happened. Sometimes you might feel spaced out, or even disorientated – this can be the mind's way of trying to shut out the experience. “I have to keep busy” Being active may help you to cope. But, overactivity can be a problem if you overtire yourself or your behaviour feels out of control. “It feels like it's happening again” Sometimes people get ‘flashbacks' – vivid memories or momentswhen they feel as if the assault is happening again. This may come out of the blue or be triggered by a particular place, event, thought or feeling, or even a smell or noise. It's important to remember that these are the normal effects of an abnormal experience and the mind's attempts to process what happened. It doesn't mean you're going mad and although it can be frightening when it happens, it is not dangerous. “I feel jumpy or irritable” You may feel extra sensitive to noises, sudden movements or even feelings in your own body, or feel as if you are always ‘wound up' and can't sit still. “I don't want to see anyone” You may feel like being alone or staying away from places that remind you of the assault. You might stop going out or answering the telephone. It can help to get emotional support from others but this may be difficult if you have upsetting or complicated feelings about what has happened. However, being alone might also feel hard or frightening. “I just want to run away” You may feel like running away from it all. This may mean avoiding thinking and talking about what happened or using alcohol or drugs. Although this might make you feel better in the short-term, it might lead to more difficulties in the long-term. Everyone is different and you may experience some or all of these feelings at different times.” https://sarchelp.co.uk/support-guidance/taking-care-of-yourself-after-sexual-assault/. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Give locally. Before you send money off to a national organization that is taking in tens of millions of dollars, see if there's a ministry in your community. My experience is that there likely is. Investigate that ministry first. Big ministries can afford slick marketing. Don't be seduced. Do your research. MinistryWatch tracks the 1000 largest ministries in the nation here. Many of the largest trafficking organizations are there. But, as I said above, most of the local ministries are too small to make it onto our list. To learn about these ministries, use the ProPublica website, here. Volunteer. Local ministries usually need volunteers to work with the people they serve. Many of them offer volunteer training that will help you understand how to be more effective in your work for them, but which also educate you about the human trafficking problem in your area. Give to Christian organizations. Many of the organizations involved in sex trafficking are not Christian groups. For example, neither OUR or IJM are explicitly Christian organizations, though IJM does have many Christians (including its founder, Gary Haugen) on staff. Some of them do good work, but without bringing Scripture and a biblical worldview to this problem, we are likely not providing lasting help. I make no apologies for recommending that you give to and advocate for explicitly Christian organizations. Pray and Give. Don't let negative headlines freeze or frustrate you into inaction. View the negative headlines as a gift, steering you away from the bad actors and toward the good actors. Human trafficking is a scourge, a horrible scourge in this beautiful but broken world. But it is the job of Christians to be restorers, reconcilers, repairers of the breach. Local human trafficking ministries are a great place to start. The producers for today's program are Jeff McIntosh and Rich Roszel. We get database, technical, and editorial support from Stephen Dubarry, Christina Darnell, and Casey Sudduth. Until next time, may God bless you.
