Luis and Angelo discuss assassins that have changed the course of world events, from World War I to JFK. Learn which countries lead the world in assassinations, how North Korea ran a masterclass to assassinate a political rival in Malaysia, how Saudi Arabia botched an assassination of a journalist in Turkey so bad that it sparked worldwide outrage, how taxi operators in South Africa run networks of lethal assassins to kill whistleblowers and politicians, and the kill count of the deadliest professional snipers of all time.
Odessa Young is only 26, but she already has a truly impressive body of work behind her. “Assassination Nation,” “A Million Little Pieces,” “Shirley,” “Mothering Sunday,” “The Stand,” “The Staircase,” “Manodrome,” in each of these projects, she seems to have an effortless command over her character, each unique, never forced, always true. Now she stars as Vita, the lead character based on Zia Anger in “My First Film.” On this episode, she talks about the need to “cultivate an obsession” as character preparation, recent musings on “how much an actor should act to the camera,” why she never worries about being misinterpreted, the importance of “kindredness with creators,” and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Air Date 7/20/2024 Extremism comes in many forms and we live in an era in which way too many of them are on display simultaneously, but it's not coincidence. The far right has been working toward an extremist Supreme Court for decades. Christian Nationalists have similarly been trying to impose their rigid view of far-right Christianity on the rest of us for a very long time. The far-right Heritage Foundation now deems this to be the time to attempt to radicalize the federal bureaucracy, and far-right calls for political violence and lax gun laws resulted in an environment where no one was really all that surprised about the assassination attempt against Donald Trump.
This week the kids cover Sam, Levinson of Euphoria's Assassination Nation (2018). Josh and Drusilla have some very uncomfy discussions. Josh is very anxious to talk about this movie, which seems very divisive. We love Hari Nef. But first! All about Carmel, Indiana and Peter Bogdanovich's Targets (along with What's Up Doc?, The Last Picture Show, and Paper Moon), Danny DeVito and Roger Corman. Drusilla finally saw Barbarian and LOVED it. She loves Zach Cregger. She also saw See How They Run and loved it, too. We love Sam Rockwell! We can only relate to the youth of movies with a reference to THE SIMPSONS. That's still hip right? We finish our tour of lying about sex in high school across cinematic generations by both justifying titillation (thank you, WILD THINGS) and condemning it (go kick rocks, ASSASSINATION NATION.) Which leaves us to say mostly nice things about the charms of EASY A while acknowledging that its setup only really works if you have the movie star charm of Emma Stone. And thank god Bo Burnham's EIGHTH GRADE was not involved in this filth! Two old guys are scared of young women. So just another movie podcast! Unfortunately for us (and you, dear listener) we come to our final entry in our look at modern-ish high school life with ASSASSINATION NATION. One host maintained hope that he would like this film (both times!) before the hate settles in. For fans of this film we plead ignorance immediately by trying to apply the STAR TREK good/bad rules to the HEATHERS inspired entries to a world that has blissfully passed us by. So there's that. Enjoy? As means of apology here is a bonus episode to the high school cinematic experience that is pure joy for the hosts as they go back to talking PAPER TOWNS as they often do off-mic. Jeff & Donald check out Sam Levinson's Assassination Nation. "After a malicious data hack exposes the secrets of the perpetually American town of Salem, chaos descends and four girls must fight to survive, while coping with the hack themselves." Happy 1 year anniversary of The Lavender Menace Podcast! We are dedicating our anniversary, season 3 finale, and 2022 Easter episode to answering three listener submitted hot takes, going over all of Taylor Swift's Easter eggs pointing to her being gay, and reflecting on the media recommendations we've given each other in the past year. In discussing being a communist on the day to day, we recommend some beginner level theory: Angela Davis books (Freedom is a Constant Struggle, Women Race and Class, Women Culture and Politics, Are Prisons Obsolete,) Blackshirts and Reds by Michael Parenti, Audre Lorde's Sister Outsider, Lenin's State and Revolution, Gender Accelerationist Manifesto, base and superstructure, Dialectical and Historical Materialism by Stalin, the podcast episodes Stalin was a mensch & Stalin a Marxist Leninist perspective. We also mention The Black Jacobins, Robin DG Kelley's Hammer and Hoe, The Foundations of Lenininism by Stalin, The Castle of Truth and Other Stories by Hermynia Zur Muhlen, and Mao's Combat Liberalism. (Also not mentioned in the episode but other really good theory recommendations: Walter Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, Neocolonialism by Kwame Nkrumah, Women's Liberation and he African Freedom Struggle by Thomas Sankara). We respond to a listener facing biphobia allegations and give our thoughts on radical feminism/trans exclusionary radical feminists (aka TERFs) with leads us to talking about attraction and sexual orientation's relationship to one's politics, “monosexuals”, heterosexual women's misogyny, gay men's misogyny, centering and attraction to men, the Bechdel test, and opposing transmisogyny. For another listener submitted hot take, we discuss how “androphobia” isn't real, break down the phenomenon of fetishizing of transmisogyny, and namedrop @butchboyfriend on Tik Tok. Renaissance then leads the conversation into material conditions in response to the gender binary and patriarchy, lesbophobia vs biphobia, visibility vs material conditions, the gender trinary, and trans men/butch history. Finally, we tackle the hot takes around lesbians and ‘genital preferences' and the politics of attraction. For the shared media portion of this episode, Renaissance goes through the timeline of Taylor Swift's queer coded Easter eggs and get into Dianna Agron and RED. Sunny rants about reputation and Lover's gayness and breaks down Cruel Summer which leads to Renaissance bringing up illicit affairs, Karlie Kloss, more Swiftgron, and an emphasis on Taylor's lyricism: “the world was black and white but we were in screaming color” etc. Also, “ME! Out now” on lesbian visibility day. For the final and third section of today's episode, we go through the things we've previously recommended each other on the podcast and have since consumed and enjoyed: Fleabag, Fortune Favors The Dead, Conversations With Friends, Assassination Nation, Professor Marsten and the Wonder Woman, Stella Bomkivist, and of course, the our love lasts so long article. Welcome to episode 8 of season 2 of The Lavender Menace, where your cohosts Sunny and Renaissance are finally in the same city, house, room! Our sunnaissance in St. Louis era has been documented extensively on @thelavenderpod on Twitter, our personal Twitters (@asunnybooknook & @rxnaissance), and Renaissance's Instagram @renaissancemarie, if you want to go check that out... anyways today we discuss Lorde's highly anticipated third album, Solar Power. As usual with music (re: our SOUR review episode), Renaissance is a hater and Sunny loves it. Then, we discuss a listener submitted hot take from Jules about the discourse going on with Twitter fighting about Hasan, a "socialist' internet streamer, buying a multimillion dollar house in Los Angelos, and consider the impossible future of this podcast blowing up and becoming rich. Basically, we are Hasan haters and Alexis @lexi4prez on Twitter stans. We watched Assassination Nation (2018) directed by Sam Levinson and have thoughts about the hypersexualization of teenage girlhood, American fascist violence, and the melodrama of cinema about high schoolers. Finally, for recommendations, Sunny recommends the translated book An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good by Helene Tursten, and Renaissance recommends the movie 9 to 5 (1980) directed by Bruce Gilbert. In this episode of the Curzon Film Podcast we look at one of the most universally acclaimed films of the year, Hirokazu Kore-eda's Shoplifters, and one of the most controversial, Sam Levinson's Assassination Nation.Twenty years in to a directing career focused on quietly devastating family dramas, Kore-eda hits a high water mark with the Palme d'Or winning Shoplifters - the story of a ramshackle, puzzle piece family surviving through petty crime, who take an abandoned young girl in to their home. What if everyone's online life were exposed? As it turns out: sheer, bloody anarchy, all led by four teenage feminists. The Purge jumps into a blender with Mean Girls in Assassination Nation a this story of youth gone wild in Salem, USA.Discussing the films this week are Kelly Powell, Kambole Campbell, Steven Ryder and Jake CunninghamRead Kambole's interview with Hirokazu Kore-eda here: http://www.curzonblog.com/all-posts/hirokazu-koreeda-interview-shoplifters-palmedorFollow the team on Twitter:@ks_powell - Kelly@jakehcunningham - Jake@irma_pep - Steven@kambolecampbell - Kambole Hosted on Acast.
