In this chilling episode, we dive into the latest flashback-heavy chapter of The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix, created by horror maestro Mike Flanagan. The ghost Dani saw is revealed to be Peter Quint, Henry Wingrave's right-hand man, who once had a dangerous romance with Rebecca Jessel, the former au pair. We explore the toxic dynamics between Peter and Rebecca, the unsettling discovery of a forbidden photograph, and the eerie presence of Rebecca's ghost at the lake. Meanwhile, a disturbing story from Miles, a tragic phone call for Owen, and another terrifying panic attack for Dani all deepen the mystery. Join us as we unpack the secrets of Bly Manor and its haunted souls.
Good news! The Stormy Skies found her water bottle. I'm sure everyone has been on the edge of their seats waiting to hear that epic conclusion. In a tragic turn of events, The Stormy Skies forgot her Stanley Cup at Yoga and cannot have a sip of water until it's returned to her. Sam then recounts some tales of woes from her day job of working with children…but thank goodness none of these children are like Miles because in today's episode of Bly Manor we learn a little more as to why Mile is the way Miles is. Dani tells the children she forgives them for locking her in the closet but admits she doesn't believe their explanation. In a flashback to prep school, Miles becomes increasingly unstable—starting fights and killing small animals—leading to his expulsion. It's implied he got himself expelled on purpose after receiving a letter from Flora that reads, “Come home.” Back in the present, Dani assigns the children chores, giving Hannah and Jamie a much-needed break. When Flora puts on a broken pair of glasses from Dani's belongings, Dani has a panic attack. Miles begins to behave in an unsettlingly mature way around her, making her increasingly uneasy. During a game of hide-and-seek, Dani stumbles upon a photo of Rebecca and her lover—the same ghostly figure she saw on the parapet. The apparition appears again, and as Miles collapses unconscious, the ghost grins ominously at him.
This movie was insane. The Coffee Table (La mesita del comedor) is a darkly comedic Spanish film from 2022, directed by Caye Casas and co-written by Casas and Cristina Borobia. Starring David Pareja and Estefanía de los Santos, this black comedy delivers a sharp, unsettling exploration of domestic life gone awry.
We have officially moved out of the Hill House and are ready to move into Bly Manor. The Haunting of Bly Manor is a gothic horror drama from Mike Flanagan, inspired by the works of Henry James, particularly The Turn of the Screw. Set in the 1980s, the series follows Dani Clayton, an American au pair hired to care for two orphaned children, Flora and Miles, at the eerie Bly Manor. As she settles into the grand yet unsettling estate, Dani discovers that Bly is filled with secrets, tragic histories, and lingering ghosts—both literal and emotional. Episode 1 introduces Dani as she arrives at Bly Manor, eager to start fresh after a mysterious past haunts her. She meets housekeeper Hannah Grose, chef Owen, gardener Jamie, and the peculiar yet charming children, Flora and Miles. While the manor seems idyllic at first, strange occurrences begin—unlocked doors, unsettling reflections, and whispered warnings from Flora to stay inside at night. As the episode unfolds, it becomes clear that something sinister lurks in the shadows, watching and waiting. We also celebrate the Stormy Skies officially getting her doctorate! And Sam complains about a new indie horror movie--Looky Loo
Wow, is it just me, or was February busier than usual this year? It's been like a month since we've had a moment to sit down and talk about Smile 2. Smile 2 (2024) follows pop star Skye Riley, who begins experiencing terrifying hallucinations and a sinister smiling entity after witnessing a traumatic event. As the curse spreads, Skye must uncover the entity's origins before it consumes her. We also discuss the Oscars and what a great year it was for horror.
This week, we're wrapping up the first installment of our Flanagan rewind with the series finale of Haunting of Hill House. Steven and Hugh find Luke unconscious in the Red Room, where Steven, Theo, and Shirley become trapped and experience haunting visions as the house tries to consume them. Nell's ghost saves them, revealing that the Red Room is the house's "stomach," disguising itself to lull its victims. The siblings, regretful for failing Nell, are reassured of their love for each other. Olivia's ghost attempts to keep them inside, but Hugh persuades her to let them go, promising to stay. As Shirley and Theo rush Luke to the hospital, Hugh fulfills his promise by joining Olivia and Nell in the Red Room. Two years later, the reunited siblings celebrate Luke's sobriety, while an elderly Horace brings Clara home to pass peacefully, her spirit joining Abigail. We also talk about some super hot Scream 7 news and whether or not we're still hyped for this movie. I mean, at this point what surprises could they even have in store for us at this point? They might as well tell us the entire plot at this point if they're so desperate to get us to come see the movie. Or, you know, issue an apology to Melissa and beg her to come back. At this point everyone who has ever been in a Scream movie is coming back.
We're back this week with a horror movie review for one we've been excited to watch: Strange Darling. Strange Darling (2023) is a thriller from writer-director JT Mollner, starring Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner, Barbara Hershey, and Ed Begley Jr. Set in rural Oregon, the film follows a one-night stand that spirals into a deadly game of cat and mouse. Told in six nonlinear chapters, it unfolds as a dramatization of a serial killer's most infamous crime in the Western United States.
We are so close to the finale of Haunting of Hill House and everything is starting to ramp up. The jump scares. The family drama. The child murder. Wait…the what? In the past, Olivia Crain begins experiencing terrifying paranormal visions in Hill House. She sees haunting premonitions of her children's deaths and is visited by the ghost of Poppy Hill, who convinces her that the outside world will destroy her family. Unraveling under the house's sinister influence, Olivia plans to leave for her sister's home—but never does. On their final night in Hill House, Olivia, trapped in delusion, hosts a tea party in the Red Room for Nell, Luke, and their friend Abigail. Unbeknownst to them, the tea is laced with poison—Olivia's desperate attempt to "protect" them from the horrors of the real world. Hugh intervenes just in time to save Nell and Luke, but Abigail is lost. In the aftermath, he flees with the surviving children as Olivia, desperate to escape her nightmare, plunges from the spiral staircase. We also pick Strange Darling for our next movie review and talk about some (now dated) Scream 7 casting news.
Woot woot! This week we are reviewing the Oscar-nominated horror movie The Substance. The Substance is a 2024 body horror film from Coralie Fargeat, who serves as writer, director, co-editor, and co-producer. The story follows Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a once-iconic celebrity grappling with the realities of aging in a ruthless industry. After being dismissed by her producer (Dennis Quaid) for no longer fitting the mold, Elisabeth turns to a black-market drug that transforms her into a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley). But this newfound youth comes at a terrifying cost, unraveling in ways no one could have anticipated.
We're a little late starting this year but we are finally back after two snow storms and the winter holidays. We can't think of a better way to jump into the new year than by watching the drama unfold within the Craine family, which is exactly what we're doing this week. Steven and Hugh search for Luke, uncovering dark truths about their family's connection to Hill House. Hugh reveals the ghosts are real and the Crains are the house's prey. Shirley and Theo race to save Luke, reconciling after a ghostly encounter with Nell. Meanwhile, Luke's attempt to burn down Hill House is thwarted by the vengeful spirit of Poppy Hill. Can the family escape its deadly grip?
Merry Christmas to all you ghouls listening today! We're finally tackling Terrifier 3 for this year's Christmas special. Don't say we never do anything for ya filthy animals. No matter how hard it is to trudge through these movies sometimes, we love doing it for you guts. That was a typo. But it works. Terrifier 3 is a 2024 American supernatural slasher film with a Christmas theme, written, directed, and edited by Damien Leone. Serving as a sequel to Terrifier 2 (2022) and the third installment in the Terrifier franchise, the film stars David Howard Thornton, Lauren LaVera, Elliott Fullam, and Samantha Scaffidi. Set in the days leading up to Christmas, the story follows Sienna Shaw as she struggles to rebuild her life while being relentlessly pursued by Art the Clown and his sinister new accomplice, a possessed Victoria Heyes.
Welcome back to the Real Horrorshow Podcast. This week, we return to the Hill House for Episode 7: ‘Eulogy'. Hugh struggles to let go of Olivia, often speaking to her as if she's alive. During her funeral, he makes amends with Theo and tries to reconnect with his children. In flashbacks, Mr. Dudley warns Hugh about Hill House's dark history and urges Olivia, whose behavior grows erratic, to leave. After she threatens Hugh with a screwdriver, they agree she must go. Hugh later discovers William Hill's bricked-up corpse in the walls and finds the Red Room unlocked during the final haunting. After the funeral, Olivia's ghost attacks Luke, Hugh, and Theo. Luke vanishes, taking Shirley's wallet and Theo's car, deepening the family's turmoil. We also briefly discuss the lack of horror games announced at the video game awards.
We're back this week with another horror movie review! We're excited to finally tackle the sleeper hit of 2024: In a Violent Nature. And at least one of us means that literally. In a Violent Nature is a 2024 Canadian slasher film written and directed by Chris Nash, featuring performances by Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, and Lauren-Marie Taylor. Touted as an "ambient slasher," the film centers on a mute killer who is inadvertently resurrected from his grave in the remote Ontario wilderness by a group of teenagers. Once revived, he begins to stalk and murder them. Much of the narrative unfolds from the killer's unique perspective, offering an unsettling and immersive viewing experience.
There's a storm coming to the Crain household in Episode 6 of The Haunting of Hill House. The episode alternates between a stormy night at Hill House, where young Nell disappears and later claims she was invisible to her family, and the present, as the Crains reunite for her funeral. Tensions boil over with secrets, arguments, and eerie occurrences, including Nell's ghostly presence—the night peaks in chaos when her coffin inexplicably falls, leaving the family shaken. We also talk about the Internet's constant love/hate relationship with Jeffree Star, our Thanksgiving plans and choose In a Violent Nature as our next horror movie review!
We're back this week to finish our review of Ti West's ‘X' Trilogy, with the final installment Maxxxine. Picking up where X left off, Mia Goth returns as Maxine Minx, navigating the glitz, grit, and gore of 1980s Hollywood in her quest for fame. But with a mysterious killer on the loose, Maxine's dreams turn into a fight for survival. We'll discuss the film's star-studded cast—featuring Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon—and break down how MaXXXine blends nostalgia, slasher thrills, and biting commentary on fame. Tune in for spine-tingling horror insights, movie reviews, and some fun pop culture chatter!

Ty West hit it out of the park with X, and surprised us all with the near-immediate release of it's prequel Pearl. Set in 1918, Pearl follows the younger self of our former protagonist as she lives on a farm and dreams of a life bigger than what she has. However, nothing wants to go the way she wants it to. Her husband immediately left her to go fight in the war, her mother hates everything she does, and her father (and only friend) is in no condition to comfort her. But, everything changes when her sister-in-law visits with the news of a huge opportunity at stardom. Now, Pearl will stop at nothing to get what she wants. The movie brings back Mia Goth in the title role and features a brand new cast of characters to get axed off one by one. Things start getting weird in The Hill House as the family settles into their new routine. Shirley takes on the monumental task of caring for some abandoned kittens she finds in the bard; however, each cat dies one by one, instilling a need to care for everyone around her. That trauma manifests in the present as Shirley takes on all the responsibilities involved with preparing Ness's funeral--including the embalming. We also discuss Borderlands the movie and who we think should have played Moxxi. There's also a heated debate as to what movies we should watch next. Welcome back! As promised, we're back from our week off with the official start of our Mike Flanagan rewind series as we get ready for his take on The Exorcist. Well, it looks like we have officially reached the end of our time with John Kramer and Co. (for now). There's been some highs and a lot of very low lows, but we made it through. That's right, this week we're wrapping up our Saw retrospective with Saw X, the latest installment in the franchise. Released in October 2023, this movie picks up shortly after the events of the original Saw (2004) and follows John Kramer as he makes one final attempt to cure his cancer. This attempt leads him to Mexico for an experimental treatment that's guaranteed to cure even the most advanced forms of cancer. However, John soon finds out this was a scam used to prey upon society's most desperate people and decides to punish the scammers in a way only Jigsaw can. It's been five whole movies since John Kramer/Jigsaw died; however, the franchise continues to find a way to work him back into the franchise--even if it didn't make sense, as was the case with Jigsaw. Well, Darren Lynn Bousmann is back to explore the Saw universe outside the John Kramer circle. Finally, someone has accepted the fact that John Kramer is dead and that the Saw franchise needs to find a new direction. Spiral: From the Book of Saw is a 2021 horror movie that decides to change the formula with help from comedian and horror fan Chris Rock. Spiral follows a detective who takes on the task of finding a serial killer copying in infamous Jigsaw killings. While I gazed, this fissure rapidly widened — there came a fierce breath of the whirlwind — the entire orb of the satellite burst at once upon my sight — my brain reeled as I saw the mighty walls rushing asunder — there was a long tumultuous shouting sound like the voice of a thousand waters — and the deep and dank tarn at my feet closed sullenly and silently over the fragments of the “House of Usher.” -Edgar Allan Poe Our time with the Usher family has finally ended in this melancholic conclusion to Mike Flanagan's latest miniseries. With the death of his eldest son, Roderick finds himself confronted with the millions of lives he's taken and accepts the consequences of his actions--and accepts the sweet embrace of death. DID YOU THINK IT WAS OVER? It's been seven years since the last installment of our Saw retrospective, and we're back from the dead (just like John Kramer) to review Jigsaw. Jigsaw is a 2017 horror film released as the eighth installment of the Saw franchise. Ten years after the death of John Kramer, someone has decided to restart his games of terror. It has to be a copycat. Right? The end of our time with the Usher family is rapidly approaching as they continue to die. This week, we bid farewell to the oldest of the Usher children: Frederick. He's lost his mind trying to figure out why his wife was at that rave that night and is taking all that anger out on her, despite her chemical burns. However, Lenore is on to her father's evil ways and plans to get her mother the help she needs. Meanwhile, in the past, Roderick betrays Dupin, leaving Annabelle hurt and confused and Madeline smug and pleased. Episode 8 of Fall of the House of Usher is based on the Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name. Based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story of the same name episode 6 of Fall of the House of Usher find that tensions within the Usher family reach a boiling point following the death of Vic. Tammy, amidst preparations for the Goldbug launch, grapples with paranoia over her husband's alleged affair with Verna, who has taken on the persona of a prostitute. Desperate to redefine the family's image, Tammy sees Goldbug as their chance to showcase the Ushers beyond Roderick and Madeline. Meanwhile, Lenore grows increasingly concerned about her family's well-being, particularly her father's strange behavior since her mother's return. A meeting with her grandfather sheds light on his deteriorating condition. Juno, despite joining the family, confides in Tammy about her profound loneliness, contrary to her expectations. Insights into Arthur Pym's travels and discoveries add intrigue to the narrative, particularly regarding Verna's presence throughout history. As the tension mounts, Roderick's absence at the Goldbug press conference raises questions, while Tammy battles hallucinations of Verna sabotaging the event. The press conference takes a disastrous turn when Verna manipulates the presentation, triggering Tammy to melt down and have a violent outburst. Madeline confronts Verna, only for her to vanish mysteriously. Upon returning home, Tammy is confronted by Verna, who urges her to apologize to Bill before it's too late. Sam and Stormy also talk about the latest horror releases. Fun fact: Sam had a tummy ache while recording this episode and was being so brave about it. Unlike our dear Roderick Usher, who finds himself incapable of making the ultimate sacrifice to save his children. This week, we're breaking down the fifth episode of Mike Flanagan's Fall of the House of Usher which adapts Poe's most well-known tale, “The Tell-Tale Heart”. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” we follow an unnamed narrator describing their meticulous plan to murder an old man with a "vulture-like" eye. The narrator is obsessed with the old man's eye, which they find unsettling. They eventually carry out the murder and hide the old man's dismembered body beneath the floorboards. However, consumed by guilt and paranoia, the narrator starts to hear the old man's heartbeat emanating from the floorboards. The sound becomes increasingly unbearable, leading to the narrator confessing to the murder to silence the imagined heartbeat. Meanwhile, in the show, we find The Ushers overwhelmed with grief as they bury the first three children who've passed. However, life has to move forward for the family as the case against them still exists. Vic decides to charge ahead with her plan to enter human trials for her revolutionary new heart device. Her wife, and partner, disagrees with moving forward and decide to break off with her and the entire family, exposing their terrible ways. It's finally over. We've reached the end. Of Jeff's story. After a pretty lackluster start to a new trilogy, Saw V picks up literally seconds after the end of its predecessor, leaving Strahm trapped with the corpse of John Kramer. That doesn't last long as he escapes his first trap and begins a cat-and-mouse game with Detective Mark Hoffman--Jigsaw's chosen successor. Meanwhile, a ragtag team finds themselves trapped by Jigsaw, and it's a race against the clock to figure out how to get out of this twisted escape room. Oh yeah, they're also all connected to each other somehow…but how? And another one bites the dust. This week in our minishow, we say goodbye to Leo Usher as he has a tough run-in with a purebred shelter cat. That's because episode four is based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story The Black Cat And things also get tense for the rest of the family as Roderick's dementia comes out and he and his sister need to figure out a plan for the future of the business. Meanwhile, in the 1970s, Young Roderick finds out Fortunado has been forging his signature--so something's gotta give. We also talk about Sydney Sweeny's venture into the horror genre. And how hot she is. Sorry. We're only human and she's stunning. We are Sweeny stans though. Saw IV is the beginning of a new era in the franchise. John Kramer is Dead. Amanda is dead. Leigh Whannel is no longer writing. And Mark Hoffman is here. What do you mean who? Mark Hoffman. The cop who was in like 30 seconds of the last movie. Turns out the twist of IV is that a character that was barely established in the previous film is the true successor of Jigsaw. Kind of. Like Amanda, Mark isn't very good at his job--in my humblest of opinions. At least he's hot though. We also look deeper into John Kramer and what made him the way he was. And let's just say he had a really rough year. Listen, buddy, we all have rough years but that doesn't mean we can all just go out and start “testing” “people” on their “will” “to live”. Mike Flanagan continues to impress us with his knowledge of both the works of Edgar Allan Poe and his knowledge of the man himself. This week, we're diving into episode three of Fall of the House of Usher, loosely based on the short story “Murders in Rue Morgue”. In “Murders in the Rue Morgue”, Edgar Allan Poe introduces the character C. Auguste Dupin, a brilliant detective who uses his analytical skills to solve crimes. The story begins with the brutal murders of Madame L'Espanaye and her daughter Camille in their locked apartment in the Rue Morgue in Paris. The police are baffled by the lack of evidence and the seemingly impossible nature of the crime. Dupin becomes interested in the case and, using his powers of deduction quickly solves the mystery. He discovers that the murders were committed by an escaped orangutan, which had been trained to perform tricks and had escaped from its owner. Dupin's solution to the crime is based on his careful observation of the evidence and his understanding of human psychology. Murders in the Rue Morgue is considered one of the first modern detective stories and is widely regarded as a classic of the genre. It established the template for the modern detective story and has been adapted into numerous films and television shows. Meanwhile, in Flanagan's loose adaptation, we follow Camille as she tries to uncover the dirty secrets her sister is hiding about her medical research while the rest of the Ushers mourn the loss of their youngest brother. We're far from over and the mysteries surrounding the Usher family are beginning to stack. We won't lie. The first episode of Fall of the House of Usher didn't have us sold on the show. It was slow and super expository. However, episode 2? My God, episode 2 is so good! This week we move forward with Mike Flanagan's Fall of the House of Usher with The Masque of the Red Death. In Poe's original short story, we meet young Prince Prospero who decides to throw a party despite the devastating plague happening outside the palace walls. Well, Death has other plans for him as even the wealthy can't escape him. And how does Flanagan adapt this famous cautionary tale? By making the masquerade a rave and Prince Prospero a Gen Z with something to prove. Twenty years ago, the world was taken by storm by a reverse bear trap, a saw, and a little puppet named Billy. We're super excited to start our look back at the Saw franchise and discuss the influence it's had over the horror drama. This week, we delve into Saw, the directorial debut of horror Daddy James Wan starring Carey Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Danny Glover, and introducing Tobin Bell. We delve into the performances, the work Wan and Whannell had to put in just to get someone to care about the project, and how they caught lightning in a bottle when they premiered at Sundance. Woah! A surprise Christmas Special? What a wonderful treat. And a treat sure is better than a knife. Which happens to be the title of this week's movie review: It's a Wonderful Knife. In this intriguing spin on the classic 1946 Christmas film, "It's a Wonderful Life," the protagonist, Winnie (portrayed by Jane Widdop), embarks on a haunting journey. Contrary to the original storyline, where the lead character recognizes past good deeds, Winnie unravels a startling revelation—her pivotal role in preventing numerous deaths within her town. Explore the depths of this gripping tale as Real Horrorshow delves into the unsettling narrative, highlighting standout performances and the film's departure from conventional holiday-themed movies.
