In early May, on the morning of the kuu.éex --a nightlong ceremony in celebration of Tlingit ways of life, to honor relatives, and in this specific gathering, the herring -- we circled round a coffee table, folks on the floor, in chairs, cozied up on the couch and listened to Deloole & Rochelle talk about protecting Indigenous sovereignty in the Yukon river water shed. They share about the importance of art, fighting big gas & oil companies, feeding their families, how to be an ally in their struggle... and calls to action, including a peaceful protest & media push this coming Friday, June 20, a Day of Prayer for Salmon. We want to bring attention to this vital work as this administration escalates the targeting of public - ie: stolen - land.Deloole & Rochelle illuminate the many ways white settler colonial violence extracts from, steals, and harms indigenous people, the lands we live on, and our relatives – from herring, salmon & moose, to trees, forests and rivers – all of us across this continent.Amidst violent ICE raids on Tongva land & across Turtle Island, & escalation of the genocide in Palestine, we bring you this heartfelt conversation from Lingit Aani, Tlingit land in Sitka, Alaska, with Deloole Erickson & Rochelle Adams, who organize with many groups, including Native Movement.Stay tuned for an upcoming series in collaboration with the Herring Protectors and Movement Generation, deepening into many themes shared on this episode.Thank you to Movement Generation for inviting so many of us to come together across the Salmon nation last summer, seeding generative relationships across colonially imposed borders. There is a backlash to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. All around us, we see the dismantlement of various DEI initiatives including in academia. Institutions and corporations that once rushed to put out statements in support of Black Lives Matter, Landback, and other social movements for justice, now seem all too ready to abandon their initiatives now that DEI is no longer trendy. It seems that those who felt that they had to pay lip service to DEI and thus instituted hollow and toothless statements and programs in support of diversity, are now thrilled that they don't have to pretend anymore - they can continue, unchallenged, with their desire to amass power and wealth. In this episode, we welcome Professor Angie Beeman, Professor in the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs and Affiliate Faculty with Black and Latino Studies at Baruch College-CUNY, to address DEI head-on. We criticize DEI when it is used as a superficial tool used by institutions, namely neoliberal academic institutions, to performatively show that they care about diversity without actually making steps towards structural transformation. We address the question of why and how targeted racist harassment still takes place in universities and colleges that have DEI policies - weren't DEI policies meant to protect us? And we also talk about the importance of having an understanding of diversity that isn't superficial. Joining me in the episode to discuss her new book - The Story is in Our Bones: How Worldviews and Climate Justice Can Remake a World in Crisis - is Osprey Orielle Lake, Founder and Executive Director of Women's Earth & Climate Action Network, International, known as WECAN.  In this hopeful book, Osprey asserts that the dominant worldview—described as capitalist, colonialist, patriarchal, and extractive—is the main culprit for environmental destruction.  Osprey skillfully weaves history, mythology, anthropology, climate and earth science, sociology, and spirituality to illustrate the central message: Capitalism and colonialism have gotten us on this path of catastrophic climate change but, as she shares in her book, they can be tranformed. Osprey shows how people all over the world are rising to defend Earth. Her book includes the memory and knowledge of how we can live in balance with nature, which still lives on in Indigenous communities. HIGHLIGHTS: - Origin stories are Spiritual healing for our planet.  - What is WECAN - Explain the concept of “Mother Law” - What is the LANDBACK movement? - The dominant cultural worldview. MORE ABOUT OSPREY: http://www.ospreyoriellelake.info https://www.wecaninternational.org/who-we-are Osprey Orielle Lake is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Women's Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN). She works nationally and internationally with grassroots and business leaders, policy-makers and scientists to promote resilient communities, foster a post-carbon energy future, while also addressing societal transformation. Osprey is Co-chair of International Advocacy for the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature and the visionary behind the International Women's Earth and Climate Summit, which brought together 100 women leaders from around the world to draft and implement a Women's Climate Action Agenda. She teaches WECAN's international climate trainings and directs WECAN's advocacy work in areas such as Women for Forests program, Rights of Nature and UN Forums. Osprey is the author of the award-winning book, Uprisings for the Earth: Reconnecting Culture with Nature.

LANDBACK For The People

In this episode, Nick Tilsen visits with longtime mentor Dune Lankard, who shares stories and knowledge from his fight to protect his homelands in southcentral Alaska. From protecting millions of acres, to standing up for the bears, to fighting climate change while feeding the people with kelp, Dune shows what it means when he says, “ocean back.” As Dune says, “if it's not regenerative then just don't do it.”  Dune Lankard, Eyak Athabaskan of the Eagle Clan from Cordova, Alaska, has been fighting to protect his homelands in the Prince William Sound and the Copper River Delta his entire life. He waged successful battles in protecting over a million acres in the Copper River Delta, was lifted up by Times Magazines as one of the Heroes of the Planet, selected by Asoka as one of the world's leading social entrepreneurs, won numerous awards for this work, and has mentored many in this movement just by being a warrior fighting for mother earth. His work has influenced Nick, many we work with, and the creation of NDN Collective. "For tribal nations, Land Back means much more than the physical return of land. It means the freedom to practice our ways of life and to heal our traditions. It means self-determination. It means that people continuously search for ways to give back to Indigenous people in their daily lives. We must have a reckoning of all that has been stolen from Indigenous people. Then, we must unite and engage in the healing process which entails land return and cultural restoration. Save your land acknowledgements until after self-determination has been fully restored. #LandBack" - by QUINN SMITH JR.What is Land Back? On our last show, a couple of weeks ago, we talked about Land Back with David Cobb — specifically, we discussed moving the idea of land back from a metaphor to a reality, by focusing on a specific case in northern California where the city of Eureka actually gave 200 acres of land back to its original stewards, the Wiyot tribe.  On today's episode, we're going to continue the conversation, and, in a way, pull back from the specific policy examples of land back and look at it as an idea again, specifically, as a revolutionary ideological framework that exists as a part of Marxist thought, a continuation of Marxism-Leninism — what has been called decolonial Marxism. To do this, we've brought on Lakota activist and political educator Sungmanitu Bluebird. Sungmanitu grew up in both Detroit and on Pine Ridge reservation and is currently based in Michigan's upper peninsula.  Sungmanitu's work synthesizes Marxism with Indigenous knowledge and decolonial Marxist theory and practice. They are a former member of the Red Nation, a mutual aid movement builder, and an organizer with the Chunka Luta Network, a project meant to push decolonial Marxism-Leninism as described by the Guyanese Marxist academic, writer, and educator, Walter Rodney.
