Subscribe to Modern Selling on the App of Your Choice! Many sales professionals have been in the selling game for years but can’t honestly be called modern sellers. Why is that? Because they are stuck in old habits, old methods, and worse—old mindsets that don’t fit the digital selling era we’ve entered. There is a lot to learn, even for experienced sellers. On this episode of the #ModernSelling podcast I dig into what it takes to become a modern selling machine, with my friend Meridith ElliottPowell. If you want to hear from an old-school seller who’s truly adapted and embraced the modern selling environment successfully, Meridith is that person. She’s not only adapted, she’s excelled, and for one reason: She’s learned how to make the most of today’s rapidly changing business climate to turn it to her strategic advantage, and she helps companies and sales teams do the same. She drops so many value bombs on this episode we could have kept talking for hours. Be sure you join us! Sales Has Changed For One Primary Reason: The Buyer Is In Control Today, we can sit in our homes and buy, buy, buy until we have everything we need. Amazon and other online portals make it possible, with free shipping included. Even more to the point, we have the opportunity to check out companies, products, and salespeople independently without them even knowing about it. When and if we (the buyer) ever connect with a salesperson, WE are the one with the advantage because we know almost everything about them (the seller) and they know very little about us. Now, flip the script. YOU are the seller. You are the one who starts the conversation with a potential buyer at a disadvantage. That is the modern selling environment. Rather than bemoan the fact, we need to learn how to work within it so that we can help buyers. Meridith says that true modern sellers believe they are more important than ever because they are the piece of the sales puzzle that infuses the process with the emotional intelligence and empathy that builds trust. So don’t let the fact that the buyer is in control deter you. You STILL have something extremely valuable that they need—the human touch. Modern Sellers Make Themselves Influencers In the Marketplace When you’re trying to sell in a climate where buyers can research your products and services long before talking with you, sellers have to become intentional about what they will encounter during that search. You have to be out there where they can see you, hear about you, investigate you until they are satisfied with what you have to offer. When you've done it well, they will be willing to email or pick up the phone. How do you accomplish that? By a multichannel approach that for one, builds on your company’s reputation and success. But you also want to be intentional about how you engage with existing customers. They are the ones who know you best and have personally experienced your solutions. When they are thrilled with what you do for them and how you care for them, they will be happy to recommend you when they meet others who are searching for what you offer. On this episode, Meridith tells an amazing story about how this can happen, so be sure you listen to hear it! Many Sales Professionals Are Chasing The Wrong Targets Meridith points out that though it’s always been a problem, sellers are STILL chasing the wrong leads. With the technology and tools available, we should be better than ever at qualifying leads and discerning what opportunities are the best use of our time and energy, but sadly, it’s not the case. She points out that we can learn a valuable lesson from Amazon and Zappos. They got big by learning to do what she calls “niching to expand.” What does that mean? It means that when they began, they understood that many people were not thrilled about the idea of buying things online. So they didn't waste time chasing those people. They targeted and sold to those who they knew would be open to buying online. And they knew that if those people found them, bought from them, and were happy, then THEY would spread the word and sell everyone else. That’s exactly what happened. If you are spending time pursuing leads that will be hard to close OR are closing deals with customers who will be hard to serve, you are taking your sales cycle backwards. You need to learn how to niche to expand, and Meridith explains how to do it on this episode. Effective Sellers Follow Up Systematically Because They Understand This It’s a reasonable conclusion that when you reach out to a prospect after a sales call and they don’t respond, you should back off. You don’t want to bother them, right? Though it sounds reasonable it’s exactly the wrong thing to do. Why? Because you’re interpreting their silence to mean something it likely doesn’t mean. Most of the no-replies you get happen because you and your solutions WERE near the top of your prospect’s priorities, UNTIL they hung up the phone and encountered the urgent things of business and life. You haven’t given them enough reason (value) to push you back to the top of their priority list. So don’t stop following up, just do it differently, by personalizing, adding value, and giving a related call to action. Meridith has some great tips and insight about this, so be sure you listen to this episode! Outline of This Episode [2:30] Who is Meridith Elliot Powell - and why should you care? We've seen a bunch of comments and conversations over the last few days, surrounding the DJI Mavic Mini... And, as always, the misinformation doing the rounds is a little concerning. So, we've pulled together the top questions/comments we've seen surrounding the DJI Mavic Mini Drone / Flying Camera ( ;) ) and have answered them here, for anyone who is considering getting one or already has one on pre-order. 1) Requirements for operating the DJI Mavic Mini are the same in the UK, as they are for any other drone - you need to abide by the ANO (Air Navigation Order), which is broken down into an easily understandable format in the UK Drone Code (Link Below). 2) You CANNOT 'fly anywhere' in the UK with this drone; despite the DJI marketing... You still need to remain 150 metres away from Congested Areas, unless you're operating it commercially, in accordance with a Permission for Commercial Operations. 3) You'll need to stay a minimum of 50 metres away from Persons, Vessels, Vehicles and Structures, not under your control, despite it being under 250g. 4) You STILL need a PfCO or a Permission for Commercial Operation from the UK CAA, in order to be able to fly this drone for commercial gain, at the moment, in the United Kingdom. 5) You still need to get permission from the appropriate authority if you want to fly inside a Flight Restriction Zone ( FRZ ). 6) You will be exempt from the requirement to undertake the DMARES in the UK - BUT ONLY IF you use the DJI Mavic Mini in it's 'naked' form... Put the stickers on, prop guards etc and you'll be over 250g and thus, YOU WILL HAVE TO REGISTER AS A DRONE OPERATOR. ***Please Note - I messed up in the excitement of shooting the video, sorry! The drone weighs 249g WITH the larger battery installed and 199g with the smaller battery installed...*** 7) You will still need to register, even under 249g IF and WHEN we switch over to the EASA regulations in June 2020... As this drone has a camera. “You need to share your story.” God was speaking to McKenzie. She felt the Lord leading to share her story, but she had no idea what that would look like. No idea what He wanted. But she still said yes. “Okay Lord, I’ll do it.” That week, she started sharing on social media… She started writing a book… Unsure of where it would lead, but know that she needed to obey the Lord. A week later, she got a random message from a stranger… “Would you be interested in sharing your story for an online conference I’m hosting?” She said “yes” again. And she was the first interview I did for the Created For Strength Conference. Confirmation to her that she was moving forward in obedience to the Lord. And confirmation to me that the Lord was the one in charge of who I should interview. We scheduled the interview, and had a great hour-long conversation… But it was full of issues… Bad connections… Bad audio… Constant tech issues… The interview couldn’t be used… But that didn’t keep McKenzie from obeying. She kept sharing her story. Kept moving forward. Kept walking in obedience. Since my baby ended up being late, we were able to reschedule. And I was blown away with the second interview. Because of her continued obedience, she had WEEKS of practice sharing her story before our second interview. And it was powerful. A wonderful testimony not only of the Lord’s faithfulness in her life… But of growth. When the Lord calls you to something, You STILL need to grow into what He calls you to. There will still be a journey… A process… Of BECOMING the person who can do the thing that God calls you to. And I have loved being small part of McKenzie’s journey. As she continues to walk by faith… Taking steps of action when the Lord calls… Even when the destination is unknown. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/createdforstrength/support

Thanks to this episodes sponsor, ContentSnare, Get Website Content From Clients Without The Hassle Feel like No One Is Listening? I've been there. And I'm going to warn you, this might be a bit of a rant, but it needs to be addressed. It seems like lately, I'm having a lot of conversations about people feeling frustrated with their business, or wondering "what to do?" I don't think this is a coincidence since I feel like I've finally gotten clarity around all of this myself. The thing that boggles my mind (and this isn't a judgment because I did the exact same thing), is that when we're TOLD what will change things and make the difference, we do nothing about it. Even if the person who is guiding us or helping us is walking the walk, has actual REAL LIFE evidence that what they're telling us works. We still don't listen! We are crazy creatures. Before I dive into this any further, let's dispell the myth once and for all: Building an online business takes time and work, just like any other business. Exciting, isn't it? NO! That's the problem with us... the basic, boring response of doing the work is NOT what we want to hear. This is the internet, after all, things are supposed to be MAGICAL here, right? It's all supposed to be easy. The problem with easy is that it's subjective. First, let me tell you that I will take building an online business over working a job any day. After having spent 20+ years in retail management, where I was on my feet all day (in dress shoes mind you, dressed up since I was the manager yet I still had the pleasure of being an extra pair of hands on a daily basis), and two bunion surgeries and plantar fasciitis later, that this beats doing that all day long (and now that I've stopped doing service work it's that much better). I get it that not all jobs are physically laborious, but we're not digging ditches or sitting in traffic for 2-3 hours a day (another reason I need to move out of the Bay Area in a couple years). I get that some of you may have day jobs too, so I'm not poking at you here, I'm simply pointing out to people that don't appreciate how much easier it is to work for themselves. Yes, there are struggles, challenges, money stress... I'm not negating that. But there's like this idea that this is all smooth sailing. This rant was brought on by an email I read this morning about someone feeling unhappy about their business. They had debated even continuing (this is a successful marketer), then realized they wanted to do things their way. They were tired of launches, fancy sales copy, marketing tactics, etc. Before I tell you why I think this is hogwash, let me say that what came through loud and clear in this email to me was that this person was TIRED. More than anything, they need a break. Some time off, a little space, and probably some simplification in their business (see what 14 years of therapy with an amazing therapist can do for you?). Now let's get into why this is hogwash... No-one is making you do ANYTHING you don't want to do! Don't want to do a 'launch'? Great. Don't. Don't want to write 'fancy copy'? Cool, write whatever you want. Want to be more authentic and do things your own way? Sweet, no one is stopping you. BUT... and you knew this was coming... You STILL have to market your business! If you had a brick & mortar store, would you be whining about having to market it? You better be good at writing copy (fancy or otherwise) if you're going to do any marketing. You're going to have to SELL... that's all marketing is, selling. The methods used for marketing online are obviously different (can you imagine trying to do a 4 series video launch for a product offline?), but they work. The frustrating (and kind of exciting) thing about the internet is that things change so fast. Just when you think you've figured something out they change the game on you. Or have they?
